LD20 — It's Dangerous to Go Alone! Take This!

Forever Alone by Fizzik 2011-05-02T09:58:00

The game glitched and I couldn't stop taking a dump, lmao. Pretty fun, though! :D

Just go easier with the particles next time, i run a mobile i5 and it still lagged quite a bit when they were being emitted.

The graphics were also a bit odd. The backgrounds, characters, and objects had varying degrees of detail, which looked a bit off.

mainFrank by Andrei Barsan 2011-05-02T09:43:00

thanks dude! :D
I promise that for the next ludum dare, I'll learn to use some sort of music making software! :D

mainFrank by Andrei Barsan 2011-05-03T12:51:00

@randomnine: Thanks! :D And yeah, I had a feeling it would be a bit confusing. At least it added an extra 3 minutes to tha gameplay time, haha :P

@athanazio: sorry to hear that. :( There *is* a version of game maker for mac, so I'll look for somebody who has it.

So if any GM Mac user is out there, I'll be very grateful if you just downloaded the source and created a Mac executable game! :)

@Fenmar: I thought of that, but I didn't have the time to implement anything... :( Thanks for the feedback anyways! :D
I'm thinking of adding an arena mode to the game, which would consist of a simple, small arena map, where monsters would get spawned constantly, and the player would go for a high score. How does that sound? ^_^

mainFrank by Andrei Barsan 2011-05-05T11:31:00

@Endurion: Thanks dude! :D Maybe next time I'll just add some tiles with a warning sign or something next to the pits, or just make them shallower.

@brainiac256: I'm really glad that my game works on Linux :D
This was my first platformer ever, and it didn't cross my mind that I could make collision masks any size I wanted, so I just 16x16 ones for every levels. Filling everything up would have taken forever my way, haha. Thanks for the input! :D

mainFrank by Andrei Barsan 2011-05-06T12:18:00

Fixed download links. Sorry for the issues.

mainFrank by Andrei Barsan 2011-05-06T16:31:00

Host was attacked recently. There might be some 404s for a while. I'll post again when everything will be ok. Sorry for the inconvenience...

mainFrank by Andrei Barsan 2011-05-06T16:36:00

Haha, awesome friends are awesome. My friend who was kind enough to host the game on his domain fixed everything mindbogglingly fast!

Everything should work perfectly now! ^_^

LD24 — Evolution

Microraptor by robcozzens 2012-08-27T08:45:00

I've always seen this happen to 3d games... IMHO 3d assets take way too much time for such a short competition. I'd love to see you work on this game after LD. It could turn into something really solid!

Battle Arena Evolution! by Markavian 2012-08-29T10:25:00

The game was fun, but felt a bit too easy. Adding some auxiliary attacks based on what your (for instance) head looks like could increase the variety, maybe.

Adversity by philomory 2012-08-27T11:50:00

You should at least provide a built version or something for people that don't have ruby installed, or can't/don't know how to use the command line.

Also, I get the same error as Bemmu - windows, cygwin ruby 1.8.7

Besugo by fanatiko 2012-08-27T08:37:00

Hey, I played it for a little, and it took me a while to figure out I had to click the other fish to attack them and I didn't eat them automatically (like in other similar games).

It would also be nice to have a little intro screen or something. Also, at the end, I reached max level and got a message, but couldn't read it because I was near the surface and the text was white on a really-light-blue background. :(

It would be nice to see more variation in edible fish - perhaps procedurally-generated ones! :D

Darwin's Odyssey by Edd Morgan 2012-08-27T08:55:00

Pretty nice, but as I said in the blog post comments, it felt a tad disappointing when I got "demoted" back to a mele sword when I evolved to the 3rd stage. :(

Super Robocade by VoEC 2012-08-27T10:07:00

Nice and polished, I really enjoyed it!
I got 6430! :D
It feels really nice and cozy!

Cellception by DiG 2012-08-27T08:42:00

I liked the feel! Could go with a menu or something at the beginning. It showed me as dead when the game was finished loading.

Also, at the very beginning it can be somewhat laggy, maybe some optimizations could be done? Dunno. Core i5 4gb ram windows 7 x64 user with Chrome here.

Eggplant farm by mokujin 2012-08-29T10:48:00

The game is interesting, but you shouldn't have to go through the intro every time you lose and want to restart... :(

Pimp my Rat ! by 90sml 2012-08-29T12:03:00

First off, why 87 Mb? Could the assets really not be compressed further?

The platforming was pretty bad and sluggish, the graphics were glitchy, the game kept jittering in an odd fashion and the level graphics weren't too polished, and kind of clashed with the rest of the style.

EvoProbe by dekart 2012-08-31T15:56:00

I really liked this puzzle game! The only thing I disliked, was randomly getting bonus stuff to place - I wanted to place a spore and ended up placing something evolved. I can't tell if it's a bug or a bonus, it ended up being annoying rather than helping. All in all, a really nice game , one of the best I've played so far! :D

The Darwinci Code - Adaption FTW! by wlad 2012-09-01T09:03:00

A really nice and rather intuitive minigame! I liked it! There is a small bug, however - whenever a new level starts, the game doesn't rate your hidden rating at the starting position, apparently. It's not a big thing, but I thought I'd mention it! :D

Cat Evolution! by Mamick 2012-08-27T08:29:00

Hey, it's pretty nice, and fun to play, once you get the hang of it! I beat it pretty easily.

A thing that I believe would improve the game, requiring more thought on the player's side would be allowing the re-positioning of player owned monoliths between rounds.

I really liked the small touches to the interface, like mapping the monoliths to asdf...; also, is it intentional that once you place a monolith you can't move it? (I mean even before actually starting the round) I tend to misclick a lot :P

I liked the ending story, it was pretty nice.

Also, you might want to fix the typos in the game (you're cats and they're cats). :P

Move the Cheese by aschearer 2012-08-27T11:46:00

Haha, pretty awesome, I liked the variation in items! You could also post a raw-exe + assets zip for those of us who already have XNA redist! ;)

Though I don't really see how this is related to the theme...

Lab Experiment Demo by Threef 2012-08-31T16:29:00

I liked the initial puzzle really, really much! Brilliant! :D But the buggy platforming made me sad :(

Good Morning World! by Viridi04 2012-08-27T00:04:00

Hm, there doesn't seem to be a download link here.

Hot Damn that's a Lot of Blobs! by Geti 2012-08-27T09:06:00

I liked this, and I felt drawn into the world.
I beat the game. Like a coward. Hm, well, I guess old Minecraft instincts die hard. :D

You should maybe add a way to, for instance, make or get weapons, so that you can actually fight the blobs, instead of digging under, building a bridge above, or herding them in some fashion.

A Matter of L and D by phren 2012-08-27T11:54:00

Yeah, it was a bit overwhelming, and I couldn't really follow what affected what. The game felt a bit confusing to me.

Beetlefield : The Forecast by Benjamin 2012-08-29T11:57:00

Really, really fun! :D I enjoy this type of game so much! Well done - incredibly polished, even for a regular game developed in a month or so! I liked the AI a lot! I would really enjoy reading a post-mortem or something describing some of the game's technical details!

Strike of Rage ! by deepnight 2012-08-31T22:16:00

Really awesome! It's a bit annoying since there aren't no checkpoints, but you shouldn't make it too easy either. I liked it!

Species Hunt by Frib 2012-08-29T10:19:00

I liked it, although it felt a bit boring. Adding something like popup text after taking a photo telling you how many points you got and how many birds you caught could make things more interesting.

Also, whenever I looked straight up, the camera view glitched a bit and a bit of the skybox got clipped and replaced with a plain green color.

Also, I appreciated the fact that you could actually see your body when looking down! :D

minogear by Andrei Barsan 2012-08-27T09:47:00

Do you have JRE 1.7? Did you extract it from the zip? The thing is that if it's still in the zip when being run, it won't be able to load its data and won't start.

Also, I'll try to repack the game with a different algorithm. Apparently 7zip does some funky stuff.

minogear by Andrei Barsan 2012-08-27T09:59:00

Whoa, thanks for the input!
1. I uploaded a new-rezipped version. Turns out using 7zip and tweaking the settings to save a few kb and feel like a zip hax0r is a no-no
2. Added notice: it requires Java 1.7!!!

Thanks for the feedback people!
@adventureloop: try it now, if not, I'll just rar it or something
@faijdherbe: see above

@phren: it needs 1.7, sorry
@Frib: thanks! :D The originality bit was the one that was supposed to be added next! xD
@Markavian: it needs Java 1.7 and it needs to be unzipped, so all assets can be loaded properly; do tell me if it still doesn't work!
@Thurig: thanks! Heh, sounds are definitely a priority if I ever get back to this (and I sure hope I do!)
@Arkazon: see the advice I gave Markavian
@mokujin: thanks! :D I'm afraid time got the better of me... Still better than the other LDs, though!
@madpew: I'm happy you enjoyed it! It's good to hear, especially since I've coded it in libgdx, which should make a potential port to Android a piece of cake; I actually think this game would be nice to play on a smartphone or a tablet!
@PeripheralGames: thanks! :D I was hoping to add some powerups to make it more strategic, but oh well...
@ollie: Thanks, I was aiming for something that's also familiar but also a bit different!

minogear by Andrei Barsan 2012-08-27T10:11:00

@Lucas Tiridath hmm, are you sure you are on java 1.7? Does a window briefly appear then close? Because this might mean trouble loading the assets.

I updated the source - it's way bigger now, but includes all the dependencies and most of the raw assets and .PSDs.

It should be just "download, build and run" now.

minogear by Andrei Barsan 2012-08-27T10:53:00

Updated again, should work with java 1.6 too.

minogear by Andrei Barsan 2012-08-31T15:21:00

@Lucas Tiridath: Thanks! :D Yeah, I was hoping to solve the luck aspect by adding more tools at the player's disposal, as well as other, more interesting block types and bonuses.

@Frozen Fractal: Nice, thanks for the feedback! :D And the red things spawn more easily due to the fact that they get spawned both as regular bricks, and as placeholders for what should have been bonus items... :P

@phren: Yay, I'm glad that you got it running in the end! It's great to get feedback - I'm really considering allocating some time to take this game further! :D

I knew Java a year ago, but I felt that Game Maker would be a better tool for developing a game in a short timespan, what with having a built-in level editor (and a rather nice one, even) as well as stuff like asset managers and the like. But I managed to do the same thing with libgdx, and it's easily portable to android, which is a plus.

@dekart: thanks! :)

Manual Population Control by Jwatt 2012-08-31T15:14:00

A game with such non-intuitive mechanics should really have some sort of built in explanations, even in the shape of tooltips!

The game looks solid and polished, though. Nice work on that!

The Adventures of Box Man by Arkazon 2012-08-29T10:43:00

Okay, I really enjoyed playing this! :D
I especially liked the ground that spawned enemies when you walked across it, as well as the plants that you needed to "taunt" in order to make them grow.

I also liked the music, and the controls were nice.

What I didn't like was the fact that all enemies suddenly evolved, without warning. I got killed like this *a lot* of times, when an enemy spontaneously grew when I was jumping over it. Some flashing or shaking would really work to warn the player that the enemy is about to evolve, IMHO.

Also, the enemies were a tad odd, in that they behaved kind of randomly, smoothly bouncing along. Some more variation in that, as well as tighter movement could be nice.

Literally; Earth Shaping by adventureloop 2012-08-27T10:34:00

You can't expect a .sh to be double-clickable on Windows, now do you? :P Try making playWindows.sh -> playWindows.bat, and have it have this code iniside:

java -Djava.library.path=lib/windows -jar LD24Game.jar

(The old version couldn't run on win, and wrongly pointed to the osx libraries anyway)

Now, time for the actual game - I couldn't really figure out what to do. I messed around for a while, but couldn't really figure out what all the buttons did, even in the tutorial. I finally figured out that they toggle between views after viewing the debug log. :P

StarwingZ by diki 2012-08-31T21:31:00

Pretty nice! I feel like this could use a post-LD version with some sort of scoring system, as well as maybe some upgrades.

Genetics-Pop by zapaman 2012-08-27T08:52:00

I couldn't really beat it... :(
The thing is, even with the info, I couldn't really figure out the best way to play the game. How do you switch between the two awkward cell colors? You should allow something like rightclick or scrolling to do it.

Also it would be nice if you could click on the game over screen to restart, instead of having to press a key.

Alivolv by Pixelbear 2012-08-31T15:16:00

:( A bit too confusing trying to do several things at once - getting used to the controls and dodging the shots, shooting back, *and* stomping buildings... I liked the graphical style, though!

Cytosine by Frozen Fractal 2012-08-31T15:04:00

I think stuff like abilities and new enemy weapons/ sizes could really show off the evolution better, but I liked the way the enemies "learned" things nevertheless!

Forward by zaratustra 2012-08-29T13:29:00

I liked the first part the most, by far!

Evu for life by dector 2012-08-31T16:01:00

Pretty basic, straightforward platformer. The backgrounds were a tad distracting, though...

LD26 — Minimalism

8-Bit? 4-Bit! by Polar 2013-05-02T18:52:00

I found it hilarious how you just spazz out of control and get thrown off-screen when you try to go through a closed door, haha. http://gamedev.tutsplus.com/tutorials/implementation/create-custom-2d-physics-engine-aabb-circle-impulse-resolution/ This is a really useful article for coding physics stuff; I highly recommend it! :D

Defense of the corrupted Pixels by YSelf Tool 2013-04-29T11:27:00

I liked it, but the pixel controls themselves are a bit confusing at first. Perhaps the first levels could also be smaller, to allow the player to get used to the system a bit better.

Mini Pirates! by josefnpat 2013-04-29T15:07:00

Woo, I beat it with 55 treasure! Not too shabby. And considering it only took 4 hours, it's pretty darn impressive! Lots of fun! :D

The Vale by Tyro 2013-04-29T11:10:00

It has a pretty nice mood, though I found the second level to be way too hard, until I figured out you have a shield. Some in-game pop-ups explaining the charge mechanic would be helpful - that's the only thing that's not straightforward. I liked the style - it perfectly fits the theme!

Ad Astra Per Aspera by getRandomName() 2013-04-30T14:49:00

A Dropbox or even Mediafire link could also work.

DeaN by Sakuyan 2013-05-02T18:31:00

The animations were great. Sadly, I also encountered the bug that lowered the enemy spawn count dramatically.

(Follow the) Line by Chman 2013-04-29T15:19:00

Gaah, *almost* there. :P Great game, really polished. The difficulty increases slowly, and the game, overall, has a really nice feel.

Permanent Destination by NegativeZero 2013-04-30T15:06:00

The creator probably needs to also export the lwjgl dependencies when creating the JAR.

Echidna by Aerlynn 2013-04-29T11:18:00

Okay, the atmosphere was nice, but there isn't much to be done or to see, though...

Block Breaker by Tahooey 2013-04-29T10:09:00

The physics are a bit glitchy, and I found that the timer saying seconds actually went down faster than it was supposed to.

True treasure of Kartoffelschloss by mortus 2013-04-29T11:35:00

I like the idea of heading TOWARDS minimalism. The platforming controls could be a tad tighter though. And the camera feels a bit laggy. But I liked the graphics and the sound effects. Dein Spiel gefällt mir. :D

One Space Away by Kiwiboi 2013-05-02T18:24:00

I felt that the controls were a bit stiff. I couldn't get past the plane event, despite trying quite a bunch of times. :( I liked the graphics, though! :D

Shape Catcher by zinfandel 2013-04-29T12:00:00

The graphics are lovely but the rest doesn't make that much sense... I like how it's inspired by Pokemon. :D

The Call by fullmontis 2013-05-01T19:44:00

Oh my god, that was great. I loved it.

It's funny - As I was playing, I kept thinking - "Gah, I have these RPGs where I have to ask about stuff *I* don't know but my character is supposed to know, and the people I'm talking to keep thinking I'm a moron". But then I got to the ending - priceless.

ppet -- a random tamagotchi permadeath sim by ede 2013-04-29T10:16:00

Okay, pretty fun actually :D
I got to level 8 and then my pet stopped evolving. :( I would like to play a post-compo version of this, with stuff like more interactions and activities. :D

Ballisto by nemec 2013-04-30T14:38:00

No matter how much I tried, I couldn't jump, haha. Great game, nevertheless. A bit too slow for my taste, but still really polished and enjoyable. I would also enjoy being able to press any key to restart a level, without having to reach for the mouse. :D

Escape from the Tower by Luxorix 2013-04-29T10:26:00

I liked it. I wanted to say that I found it weird that you automatically opened doors next to you thus possibly wasting keys, but I find that it actually makes the game more fun and challenging.

The graphics fit together really nicely and there's quite a bit of content.

I found that in level 4, it's impossible to get all the coins (please do correct me if I'm wrong).

BLoX by ThirteenWB 2013-04-29T18:55:00

Nice little game, with an addicting feeling. The thing I would have liked to see is a HUD with your current stats such as lazer upgrade level and armor. I liked it! :D Nice and minimal.

My Hair Is On Fire by Ofursnati 2013-04-29T11:03:00

Pretty nice, though being slowed down the more damage you take is not very fun. :( Also, I don't really see what it has to do with the theme.

BASHLAND - Breakout Mario Mashup by McFunkypants 2013-04-29T11:53:00

Really cute! It felt crisp and breaking the blocks was satisfying! I liked the visuals and the sounds - the ambient music was minimal and complemented the the game nicely. Well done, mr. McFunkypants!

[My little game][+ or -] by Toinane 2013-04-29T19:01:00

Adorable little console game. And by far the smallest file size EVER at about 3kb. :D

Four Scepters by Benjamin 2013-04-29T19:31:00

Pff, I wouldn't have expected less from the creator of Super Strict Farmer and Beetlefield: The Forecast. Brilliant game, capable of keeping me hooked for a very long time!

Also, I somehow managed to get stuck in the top-right room of the third, level. I'm not sure if it's a bug or not, though.

Great job. Don't EVER skip a Ludum Dare. :D

Four Scepters by Benjamin 2013-04-30T14:23:00

Potions don't seem to be able to remove the poison effect (I'm playing custom mode now, the last level).

Budget Squad by deepnight 2013-04-30T15:17:00

Ye gads, this is a great game. Dang! It was so fun to play and polished. I'm looking forward to more LD entries from you! :D Great art, great EVERYTHING! The only thing missing was a cool music track for your timelapse haha.

Moiety by aDFP 2013-04-29T14:59:00

Really lovely feeling! #1 atmosphere so far. Fits the theme perfectly. The only thing maybe missing is some chill background music.

Where is Pixel by ananasblau 2013-04-29T11:45:00

Pretty straightforward gameplay, I just wish there were more levels. :(

1951 by Andrei Barsan 2013-04-29T20:44:00

@errorage: 1951 was the year the first nuclear reactor was used to successfully produce electricity :D You're in that very reactor. It's an experimental one, which explains why you need to work to stabilize it. (Hey, it's better than calling the game "Math is fun: merge the circles and learn subtractions!" ^_^)

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Here are my responses to the common issues:
- lack of levels = LD48 :(, not that much time on my hands; I'm aiming to launch a post-compo version with more stuff in it, though
- controls: I will increase the size of the bounding boxes around the particles, and also improve the flick detection in the next version
- visual feedback showing that +/- particles cannot be merged when the player tries to merge them
- sfx (shouldn't be too hard)
- music (should be very hard, but maybe I'll manage to whip up something decent in pxtone, who knows?)

Moondar by leafo 2013-05-02T17:49:00

I managed to get to the third stage, only to insta-spawn in a wall and die (2776 points). :( Other than that, It's a *really* nice game! It feels polished and the gameplay is exciting, if a bit chaotic.

Honestly, the only tip I could think of is the omnipresent UPGRADEZ!1 It would be nice to upgrade you dude and the buggy (better steering, earlier wall warnings, etc.)

The only large issue I can think of is the fact that the gameplay is far from minimal, hehe.

The Red Circle by dissonance 2013-04-29T10:05:00

Quite depressing actually, but still enjoyable. It would be nice to have more choices, as well as maybe the ability to skip certain audio parts you've heard before - it could make the choices easier to explore.

Robo-Sheriff: Minimalising Crime by spiral 2013-04-29T11:39:00

I like the graphics and the style, but I still don't find the whole experience... minimal. The physics were a tad buggy, but still usable. :D

Long Live the King by Dax 2013-05-02T18:19:00

I liked the game - it showed a lot of work for a LD game! :D It had a tad too much grinding, though. I liked the I am error reference. :D The combat system was pretty nicely implemented!

Line Game by elektron 2013-04-29T14:55:00

This was really fun, and it had a very nice difficulty curve. If also fits the theme very well! The music was a tad annoying, though.

Skyrim Simplified by Zer0XoL 2013-04-29T11:29:00

It's complaining about not being able to find MSVCP110.dll. I've extracted the game to its own folder. I have Windows 7 x64.

Skyrim Simplified by Zer0XoL 2013-04-29T11:42:00

Zer0XoL: I *do* have the 64-bit runtime installed. I even re-downloaded it and performed an integrity check and still nothing... :(

Knightly Knight by dsoft20 2013-04-29T12:04:00

Cute little game. Though the small window hurt my eyes a bit. :( I liked the gameplay and how I could send the enemies flying as I hit them! :D

L'Hypnose by Wan 2013-04-30T14:58:00

Interesting game. I enjoyed playing through it. I like the simple but powerful art style.

ASTEROIDS! (the side-scroller) by locknic 2013-04-30T14:33:00

It's quite fun, but a tad difficult, even after getting used to it. It would be more fun to progress through (shorter) levels, with each being a tad harder than the next.
