LD21 — Escape

Roundman: Escape from Squareworld by lectvs 2011-08-30T00:53:00

(Co-dev speaking here)

@dogbomb Thanks for your input! I briefly considered score popups, but I dropped the idea for time constraints and some worries about the aesthetics. Since a lot of people wish the game had them, though, I'll see that we put those in.

@ExciteMike We're not really experienced in making sounds, so this is the best we could do under the circumstances. In future updates we'll see if we can get some nicer, more realistic step sounds.
Yes, the blocks and enemies give you points. Also, the speed does actually increase. The thing is, it increases every 100,000 points, so reaching it is a bit hard. Get past 300,000, though, and I guarantee it'll be zipping along nearly as fast as you are.
I've never played Action Turnip, but I'll take a look at it to see if it has any further inspiration for us. Thanks for playing!

@Rudy The song was made in GarageBand; I'm pretty sure it has no DRM. I'm sorry there seems to be a problem, hope you get it fixed. I know how you feel about DRM, I think it's pretty crap as well.
We tried a simpler install by just copying the executable and content to another computer, but it refused to run and crashed. If you've found a simpler way of installing XNA games, I'd love to know how. I think the installer is weird too.

LD22 — Alone

Luto Hominus by Ashkin 2012-01-07T20:31:00

Impressive pseudorandom generation. It would probably have been a neat game if you had finished it.

The Lonely Knight - Dark Adventure by Slapunas 2012-01-07T21:09:00

The art was great, but movement felt sluggish and combat was difficult. The spearmen continuously backed away, making it impossible to catch up to and kill them. With a bit more polish, it could probably be better. It reminded me of the flash game Bob the Barbarian.

Kaylin Norman's Generic Series: Platformer by Twisted Devotion 2012-01-07T20:44:00

The intro was a bit too long, and it's impossible to jump off moving platforms (or land on them sometimes, resulting in death). The music was good, the graphics meshed together nicely. Overall, it could use a bit more work on the gameplay working better.

One May Pass by binarycoder 2011-12-19T18:28:00

Very unique idea! I think that, with more polishing and levels, this could be a commercial-grade game. Seriously. It's really cool.

Also, I put up an alternate download link for Happy Land that should fix your problem. Look in the description.

Apoc: Apocalypse Shooter by JohnLeeroy 2012-01-07T21:22:00

Pretty fun! It might be my touchpad, but the looking-around goes a bit fast. Also, the game asks for a bunch of controls at the beginning; I can understand the graphics options, but the controls were a bit intimidating (especially since there were lots of them).

My main complaint is that the bullets collide with the crates that the zombies drop, making shooting into a crowd impossible, since the crates move towards you and block the zombies.

Jump Alone by robitstudios 2012-01-07T21:02:00

Very innovative concept, but I'm going to have to agree with KevinZuhn that the execution could use more polish.

Alone with Mines by vgrichina 2012-01-07T20:48:00

Odd, I only get the Blocks Left bar and a volume thingy (Firefox on Windows XP). What exactly is Canvas, and how can I find out if my browser supports it?

Destination Eden by _ferritt 2012-01-07T20:18:00

I was unable to run the game, being greeted with "no suitable Direct3D blah blah". The problem is that in your project properties, under XNA Game Studio, you have HiDef selected instead of Reach. If you use Reach instead, more people will be able to run it.

Please fix this problem, I've heard good things about this game and would really like to be able to play it!

The Lonely Cupcake by orangemoose 2012-01-07T21:36:00

You can get past the second can if you lead it off the box and jump over it. Also, you can stick to the ceiling and jump around the corner to avoid the third can.

The graphics were excellent, but the gameplay seems like it needed some collision bugs fixed.

LD23 — Tiny World

SpermWorld by AnimeGeek32 2012-05-06T22:12:00

Some of the particles were just too far apart to collect.

TINY LIZARD SWELL WORLD by racarate 2012-04-28T20:47:00

Yeah, I can't find the lizard.

Planet ZOOB by Pacifist Games 2012-05-06T22:07:00

Very nicely done on the audio component.

The Two of Us by scoopsy 2012-04-29T22:32:00

Interesting, but really, really unfinished.

I'm giving you 5 stars for humor because in retrospect, the game closing on me every time I died was pretty hilarious.

3rd Planet by xillix 2012-04-28T22:08:00

Even though I have XNA, I was forced to install XNA components. Can you also provide the exe/Content folder found in the project files (in Debug or x86 or bin or somewhere) next time?

Also, I could not run the game due to the graphics profile used. You can fix this by going into the project properties and changing the graphics profile from HiDef to Reach.

3rd Planet by xillix 2012-05-01T06:23:00

No install and Reach graphics profile worked very well! Thanks.

The game seems like it could use a bit more UI, like your health. I was not sure how to kill the enemies, since they seemed to go through my shield but died anyway. I'm not sure where the ball came in.

6 Degrees of Sabotage by dukope 2012-04-29T22:51:00

Even though my browser has Flash Player installed and updated, the game is missing in leiu of a "Get Flash Player" button. Guess I can't play it.

Tinysasters by Volute 2012-05-01T06:42:00

Awesome game! I don't have any specific criticism.

Space Rescue! by schnerble 2012-05-04T05:17:00

Had a few spots where the ship sped up for no reason and couldn't reset the ship. Otherwise a great game.

Ra Ra by YMM 2012-04-27T01:55:00

This is almost as out-of-the-box as the Nazis-vs-beef game. Brilliant and fun.

The borders of Tiny World by AngelDE98 2012-05-06T22:01:00

I'm pretty sure I have updated Java, and jar doesn't run.

Tiny Galaxy by devince 2012-04-26T15:36:00

Very original idea!

The Tiny Gryphalope by bytegrove 2012-04-27T03:00:00

Very nice game. My computer wasn't good enough to run it without lag so I don't think I can rate it properly.

My Little Dungeon by thegreystudios 2012-05-01T06:25:00

On Windows XP, game closed immediately after opening.

Small World by psychopsam 2012-04-27T03:12:00

Everything but the player seems to have been rendered a solid medium gray. I'm on Windows XP if that helps.

Les Petites Bombes by jgalecki 2012-04-29T23:23:00

Can you provide the simple exe/Content next time? For those of us with XNA, we can run the application without the installer.

Also, you used the HiDef graphics profile. Us with older computers can't run it unless you change it (in project properties) to the Reach profile.

Tiny World of Bees by tripleVisionGames 2012-04-26T15:28:00

Nice graphics; perhaps the gameplay would be more engaging if you added some obstacles or enemies to make it more tactical or challenging?

Tiny Worlds by Lidfrid 2012-04-29T22:41:00

The controls were a bit weird - using horizontal/vertical directions for a planet that is more angle/velocity makes it hard to get motion right. Other than that, a fantastic game.

Kumiho by Christina Antoinette Neofotistou 2012-05-08T03:18:00

It took me as much time to beat the game, except for the final boss, as it took me to beat the final boss. Nice game.

Cruel space by Stalker_23b 2012-05-03T16:55:00

Lagged too much to give you gameplay ratings. Good graphics, though!

ANtopia by pgil 2012-05-04T05:45:00

I was certainly not expecting that!

Bunny Cube by Sebby 2012-04-28T21:50:00

Wait... I facilitated domestic abuse and helped a dog commit suicide? This game is darker than I thought.

Hop sound. My ears.

MacroPong by LegacyCrono 2012-04-29T22:46:00

I'm pretty sure I can hit the ball by following the computer paddle. Other than the tiny size and superintelligent AI, a pretty nice spin on Pong.

Cows and Stuff by wademcgillis 2012-04-24T03:18:00

My ears, they burn.

Nature Wisp by Killswitch 2012-04-28T21:20:00

Some sort of checkpoint would be nice.

Superpixel by lectvs 2012-04-24T01:14:00

The meat of the game seems to resemble another platformer with saws I can think of, but no matter. The levels are well-designed, the controls are excellent, the aesthetics are nice. The song is a bit repetitive, but there's a mute button, so no harm done. The theme seems a little stretched. Overall, an excellent game.

Primordial Smackdown: Bacteria with Badditude by Vilborg 2012-04-26T15:13:00

tripleVisionGames, MinerCraftGuy, the readme is included in both downloads. Did you miss it, or was there a problem?

Primordial Smackdown: Bacteria with Badditude by Vilborg 2012-04-28T20:36:00

robcozzens: It's in XNA, so I'm afraid I don't have the tools to port it. I'd really like to, though!

racarate and others: Thanks for the feedback on the controls! I'll look into how to make combat easier to handle.

Petri-Dish Survival by Rex Peppers 2012-04-29T23:05:00

The consequences of death were too harsh. I smiled when I figured out how to win level 3, but level 4 didn't seem like it was actually a level. The player sprite looked like it was programmer art and contrasted with the rest of the game.

Subatomica by SFBTom 2012-05-08T05:12:00

I think there were some advanced techniques I didn't master, and I don't know where the antimatter was, but I got gold on one of the last levels. Pretty neat idea!

BEEFWAR by crackerblocks 2012-04-24T02:23:00

Some of the sections don't have many cuts gorthem, and I think some of them didn't have any. Nevertheless, a solid and original game.

Gods Inc. by BlackDogg 2012-04-28T21:40:00

Very nice! Could probably turn into something very cool.

Hopeless by DragonSix 2012-04-28T22:19:00

I can run it; your game is using the HiDef graphics profile instead of the Reach one, so older computers can't run it. You can change this in the project properties.

An Imperative Journey by RichMakeGame 2012-04-27T02:54:00

I was very confused as to what exactly I was doing, but I managed to fetch all the items. The bit where all of a sudden SPIDERS was strange; I was wondering of it was going to turn into some sort of shooting, but apparently not.

Super Shotgun Showdown by danlthemanl 2012-05-06T22:23:00

There were a lot of collision problems, so I would get stuck on walls a lot more than I should. That got really annoying. The low-health sound was also aggravating, such that when I finally died, I welcomed death. Maybe that's what you were going for.

Ant Slayer by Kharza 2012-04-27T03:07:00

I can't run your game. If you go into Project Properties and change the Hi-Def profile to the Reach profile, it will be more accessible to those of us with older computers. I'd love to play another game made in XNA, but the graphics option seems to prevent that.

Bottled Worlds by Patacorow 2012-04-27T02:19:00

There are a bunch of things you did right, so the only problem I have to report right now is that sometimes attacking near a wall causes me to warp into the terrain.
Nice choice of soundtrack.

Hive by ericdpitts 2012-04-29T23:20:00

On one hand, the rotation seemed amateur. On the other hand, the background graphic was very well done. I guess your graphics were pretty good, then. :)

Zombie Fish by Ethanh59 2012-05-08T02:43:00

I tried to open the Web option on the web - alas, 'twas not to be. Then the download wanted unrestricted access to my computer. Sorry, I think you can manage something a little less scary next time.

Massive Attract by Peter Cooper 2012-04-24T03:29:00

Odd, it worked in Firefox for me, but not in Chrome.
My first time was 28.

Tiny Territories by badlydrawnrod 2012-05-08T02:39:00

Neat game; definitely needs to be fleshed out more next time around.

Epic Scale Warfare by devwil 2012-04-28T21:08:00

I think you're giving an anti-war message, but the actual delivery seems to be poorly executed. There's not much for the player to do, so the player just meddles around and then the house id destroyed. I couldn't say war is good or that it isn't terribly destructive, but your game just didn't get anything across to me.

Regarding the browser debate, I understand that you don't like the variety of development modes that LD comes to expose us to. I for one really like the ease and power XNA gives me, so I develop mostly in C#/.NET/XNA so I can leave the low-level stuff to someone else. Perhaps I will learn Flash or something else later. But for now, please do not critique my choice of language; I'll make that choice myself.

Epic Scale Warfare by devwil 2012-05-06T22:30:00

I played the game again, and even tried looking at the source. I still have no idea what the point is.

All I have to say is that if you wanted people to make browser games for LD24, you probably should have set a better example.

Planetship by s0ulcrusher 2012-04-27T06:39:00

Had a BSoD, but I'm not sure of it was this. The game is really neat and original. The gameplay felt a little empty, just scanning, occasionally mining, until a green planet pops up. Perhaps with some more polish or content it could be a more robust game.

Anthill by kutuup1989 2012-05-04T05:31:00

For users that have the XNA Framework already installed, you can build the project, then copy the exe and the Content Folder from Projects\Projectname\Projectname\Projectname\bin\x86\Debug. You will have to distribute the installer for those without XNA, but those with it can run the exe/Content fine. Not to shamelessly plug my own game, but if you want to see how to distribute the installer/no installer packages, take a look at how I did my game: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-23/?action=preview&uid=4884

Core Buster by Maato 2012-04-29T23:27:00

Game crashes on launch for me. Doesn't work in Chrome or Windows.

Bacteria by tmanrules97 2012-05-08T02:48:00

Pressed Play and game just sat there. Dunno what the problem is.
