Wow, this is really great! The size of the game is staggering. I was looking through your source as well, it's really well organized. Impressive work!
Great work, nice idea for the theme. This is basically my life.
Also, what's up with those assholes who start vigorously following you around once they see you? :P
Nice job, thoroughly depressing. Good job with the theme.
Great job! The controls were super smooth and I loved your sprites and backgrounds. Sound design was superb as well.
Great work! I love this kind of game. Excellent graphics as well. I really liked the screen effect when you use a bomb, very cool.
A pretty enjoyable entry! I wish it were longer. Loved the music!
Very nice, the game would definitely have benefited from sound. Atmospheric music and sound, and sounds to indicate that the zombie is breaking through the door. But, a fine start!
@rawbits
Hmm, that's strange. Most any graphics card should be capable of running this, it's just simple 2D sprites. What graphics card do you have, and what is displayed when you try to run it?
Well, as others have said there is the problem of the "flying joe," not to mention the creepy premise (chasing down a girl that has refused your advances, and is now running from you...........), but, not bad for such a short amount of time.
Also, I agree with caranha, going with the "automatic" running, a la Canabalt, may have been a better option.
Nice work! I liked the game a lot, up until the ending. I feel it would have been much better without the text at the end. Instead of joking about your ending, just leave it and allow the player to decide what happened.
Same as above, missing dll. :(
Yeah, cool graphics effect in the latter half of the game. Agreed with the above, the controls when walking on the ground were laggy, but fine when in the air. It probably had something to do with your collision detection with the ground, maybe try without precise collision detection.
Great work! The graphics and music were outstanding, and this is probably the best use of the theme "alone" I've seen yet!
Agreed, very good job on the lighting. I would have liked mouse aiming so you could fire while running away, otherwise it's pretty hard to avoid getting hit by the monsters. But, good job!
Very nice graphics! The cat was cute, and the backgrounds were well detailed. A few bugs, like sometimes falling through platforms that you should be able to jump on, but other than that, good job!
Agreed with the above, the jump mechanics could use some work. You can "stick" to walls if you move into them when you're jumping.
Also, the game just kind of stopped after I finished the first level, I'm not sure if that's how it was supposed to be? I jumped down and then nothing else would happen.
As for file hosting, use dropbox (http://www.dropbox.com/), free 2gb file hosting (just put your .exe in the public folder)
Very cool game. The only criticism that comes to mind is I'd like some better indication of when I've been hit. A sound, a change in sprite, some red on the screen, something. But, great job you lot!
Interesting mechanic, and some pretty good scenery and graphics. The only problem I had was with the text going outside of the screen (so some parts were unreadable).
The game could use a bit more explanation, it was confusing at first to figure out what I could do as a player. But, the music and sound effects were quite good!
Couldn't play it. :( I'm on windows 7 64 bit. I just got an orange dot that let me draw on the black background and "fetching images" in the bottom left corner.
Not bad, a pretty fun little game! I would have liked some different sound effects though, the mario ones didn't really fit, in my opinion.
The game would freeze up for short periods of time without warning, getting hit once would occasionally remove all 3 lives.
I really liked the concept behind this game. The water physics were wonderful, but the gameplay itself (movement, shooting) was a bit too unresponsive. Other than that, it was a very cute game, it made me smile.
Great job! This game was a lot of fun! I would have liked some smarter AI, but I know that's asking a lot from a LD game (especially one made in half the time!) But, good work!
Nice job! A good idea, and a fun little game! I liked your music as well.
I really liked the style of this game, but the gameplay itself did get a bit boring. Some more mechanics (levelling up, more threatening enemies) or places to go would have made it more compelling I think.
I really liked the mood of this game, the graphics and music helped this a great deal. The fighting was a bit tedious, and the zombie + boss took too long to kill. But overall, good job! I would have liked to see more.
This made me smile. :P WASD doesn't seem to work.
I really liked this one! The style of it was great, and it was pretty fun. Great job!
Really great graphics here. Fun gameplay, I just wish there was more stuff to shoot while you're exploring the level. Awesome intro as well! Great job!
Fun little racing game! The controls did feel a bit off, but I have to admit I had fun bouncing around the screen off of the sides when I lost control. :P W/S to accelerate and A/D to turn would have been a bit more intuitive, I think.
Pretty cool graphics and sounds, but the platforming kind of killed it for me. Having the camera flip on the double jump was very disorienting, and not something I really wanted to experience. :P Some mouse sensitivity options would have been nice too, since it was way too sensitive for my mouse. But, nice job given the time frame, I love these sorts of 1st person explore-em-ups.
For those getting the error double clicking the jar file, you just have to run it from command line as such (as others have said): "java -jar CellCollection.jar". Having a batch file included with your game to do this would help those having trouble running the game.
A bit farmville-esque, I feel, (without the whole "exploit your friends" bit) in that you just start it up with the two peach colored cells you can buy at the start, leave it running and check back later. It would be nice if it didn't take so long for everything to happen, or if there could be more player interaction. Pretty cool concept though, and I like the use of puns in your description. :P
Really great graphics! I would have liked some sounds and music. It was pretty addicting too. With a few more features and a bit more challenge, this could be a really great game!
Oh, I just read through the comments and saw you released a post-compo version on android, that's great news! (You should post a link to that in your description (; )
The difficulty curve could use some adjustment. If you take too long to destroy all of the bacilli, their spawn time increases exponentially and then you basically are screwed. They spawn to the max, and regain whatever you kill right after you kill it. Also, hard difficulty should just be renamed to "impossible." :P
But overall, it was a pretty fun, charming game.
I loved this entry! Very Osmos like gameplay, and your visual style, while simple, looked really nice. The second level was a bit hard, the huge monsters move so fast, but I'll definitely come back to this one. Great job!
I get the same thing as Beanalby, an empty 1st level. :( It's a shame, this one looks and sounds extremely promising.
Wow, very nice job! Great aesthetic, solid controls, good sound effects and music. A very polished, complete-feeling game for coming out of just 48 hours, great work!
This was a really great idea for a game. I'm terrible at these types of puzzles anyway without the added hassle of platforming. I couldn't solved your post-compo version either. :P The controls need a bit of work, it was a bit fiddly. I'd sometimes move a block when I was just trying to jump off of it. Maybe make a change like you hold Z/X if you want to move a block or something like that? I don't know how well that would work/how feasable that would be with the way you have it now. But, I really like this idea and I feel like you should continue to develop it. I liked the background music as well.
Really cute game! I loved the style, and the small window size fitting in with the "tiny world" theme, love it. Great job!
Great job! I had fun with this one. One problem I had was that I would get a "get ready" message that would freeze me for a few seconds (as if it were the end of a level or something), but the enemies would keep coming. I don't know if this is because I got hit too many times, or if it is just the end of a level? I would have liked to hear some sound and music, but it was pretty fun regardless!
Good design, and I liked the idea of an RPG-ish Bejeweled type game, and battling buildings. :P Also, I liked the music, personally.
Great job, I loved this entry! My favorite part was definitely the music, and it was fun floating through space looking for parts. My only complaint is that the sound effect for using the jetpack was a little bit annoying. I think it would have been better if it was a little quieter, it clashed with the music.
Really amazing job! This is the first really good puzzle game I've come across this Ludum Dare, and it's really well done. Well thought out mechanics and puzzles. Really nice graphics, and I liked the music (even if it was pretty simple, it fit nicely)
Great job on this! I loved it. Graphics were great, your character and her animations were really nice. A nice, succinct little story.
Ha! Awesome. I loved the graphics and the premise behind the game. Some sound and music would have been nice, and it could have used a bit more depth. But, I enjoyed it, nice job!
Agreed, cool cursor effect, but that's really all there is here now.
Lots of fun! A really simple premise, easy to pick up and play, and I think that's a great thing. The graphics, while simple as well, worked for the game. Nice job!
Awww so cute! Nice music too! I liked that you used the number of eyes on the character to indicate the lives left, a nice little touch. Great job!
This game was amazing, it's a shame more people haven't played it yet. Great graphics (especially that awesome title screen), great music, and really fun, addicting gameplay. I only came here thanks to kylerhoades' blog post about it, more people need to play this.
I loved the idea of this game, but I couldn't get it to do anything meaningful. When exciting it with to first energy level, it just flies off the screen. Cool cursor effects though, and a great idea!
Really awesome graphics! And a really fun game too! I feel like it would have been more fair for only arrows that miss to come back down at you (while hitting an enemy would simply make it disappear), but I liked this mechanic, very cool!
I liked your music, and using guitar sounds for sound effects was a nice touch as well. Did you live record the music, or are they from a sound program?
I didn't play through to the end, the controls felt a bit too "loose" and the collision detection feels a bit off. I couldn't get past that last fireball in that twisty vertical section. But, it was an enjoyable entry, good job!
Yikes, the audio made me flinch every time it spiked up. Good ideas here, and pretty nice animations and things, just seems like you needed some more time to put it all together.
It's a shame you only worked 5 hours on this, there are some interesting concepts at work here! I agree with you, spending some time at the beginning of the compo planning out the design can be extraordinarily helpful.
Sorry to hear that you got so sick during the compo. :( Would have been fun with more stuff to do.
Wow, amazing job. Great idea for a game, very fitting of the theme. It became much, much, much more challenging than I expected it to be at first glance.
Fun, interesting mechanics here! Nice work!
I like the design of this, I'd like to see more added to it. The jump needs work, you can't really use it to avoid the enemy's attacks at all. And approaching the enemy is basically instant death. But, it's an interesting idea!
I loved this game! It's so simple, but it's really fun and the presentation is lovely. I liked the "Frogs that got yelled at" counter. :P Nice music too, pretty catchy. Great job!
I loved the music in this one!
I was promised love and peace when I clicked, not explosions!! :P Nice graphics, and I liked the sounds (even though they were a bit quiet). The pretzel health gauge made me giggle.
Fun, simple little game. Strange music as well. :P I would have liked some victory conditions or challenges, but still a bit fun regardless.
I liked the graphics and your music as well! I would have liked to be able to get to the sun though. :(
A pretty fun little entry! You should change the name of your link from "Windows" to "Web" or something similar, since making it seem as if it is just a Windows executable will turn off many potential players.
Not bad! (Why am I running from pigs and why do they want to kill me? D: ) You should consider starting the initial pig and the player in different locations, since if you're not ready when you start, you lose the game instantly.
As for the graphics, you should consider familiarizing yourself with a tool such as Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/). Gimp is a free image manipulation program that has similar functionality to Photoshop. It's not that hard to learn to use, but it helps you to make much better graphics (even if you're not an artist). The simple ability to have the background of your sprites filled with transparency will improve your graphics almost instantly.
Hope to see you in the next Ludum Dare!
Really amazing artwork and graphical design, but the gameplay is a bit frustrating. Maybe allow for more precise movements, lower jumps, etc. In the second level, I could not get up on the leaves at all, I just kept jumping all the way across the level. But, if you polish up the gameplay a bit more, this would be a great game to have on my phone!
You might take a look at this:
http://www.pygame.org/wiki/Pygame2exe
And see if you can make it work for your game in order to get some more plays, as the majority of people are not going to want to install python/pygame.
Not bad, this was pretty fun! The audio levels on the sound effects and music were a little out of whack, the main menu music was really loud, and then the in game music was low, but the sound for destroying a building was really high. Just a minor issue.
Yikes, my hand is tired now. Pretty fun little button-mashing roguelike. :P I agree though, some explanation of the controls would have been nice (did mana do anything?)
A pretty interesting game, the player character was a bit too easy to lose track of, and it would have been nice for the movement to be a bit more responsive. But, certainly an interesting one. Good job!
Loved it, great job! The only reason I kept playing through that frustrating last level was to hear more from Zorlax. :P
Pretty fun game, very much like Desktop Dungeons. I liked the lighting effects, and the random elements. Good job!
Great job! The auto-magic mechanic was a really interesting idea, I loved the graphical style as well. The difficulty was a bit too high for me, maybe a bit of balancing? It felt like enemies took too long to die, and the rewards for killing them were a bit too low. But, very nice job!
Your whole graphical style was really nice, I liked it. The hit detection was a bit buggy, as you said, and I was not really sure about the whole door-combination puzzle thing. I just went in random doors until I finally got to the next room. But, pretty fun overall!
I couldn't get past the title screen, despite my mashing of right alt, right ctrt, and right shift. :P I will bookmark this one though and come back in a week or so to see if there are more instructions or a web version, because I love the idea of this entry! And it's awesome that you developed this using 1987 tech, love it.
Wow awesome job, loved the Space Harrier vibe. The character movement felt a bit wonky, it would have been nice if it was a bit more precise (pressing left and then right makes the character teleport), maybe not always make him default to the center when there's no input?
But, great job folks! The intro, the music, the sounds, the graphics, it was all awesome.
I was completely blown away by your visual style, right off the bat. Great job there. And I loved the concept of combining an exploration based adventure game with a text-based adventure game. It worked really well. I was sad when I chopped down both trees and was told I only needed one tree's worth of lumber. :P Also, the first time I walked into the trees that were "just drapes." Outstanding job.
Really ambitious entry! I loved it. The presentation was outstanding, especially given the time frame. The sound effects and mood were spot on, pretty creepy atmosphere. Great job!
Pretty challenging game! Controlling the ship was a bit awkward, it would be more intuitive in this sort of game to have a "thrust" that propels you forward the longer you hold it, rather than just a constant speed that you can increase or decrease. But, the way you had it works too, it's just a bit more frustrating. ;) I liked the use of the tiny window, definitely made the game more difficult.
Wow, great job. Amazing graphics, really great mechanic ideas, and they fit the theme quite nicely too! My favorite entry thus far. :)
Pretty fun entry! A nice idea, but as others have said, the difficulty grew to a point where you really couldn't win, regardless of skill. Just needs some balancing.
Awesome game! The mechanics are really fun, and I think the combination of block placement and dimension shifts works really well and makes for some fun and smart puzzles. Great job! I'd like to see you continue to work on this, polish it up, add some music, and make it longer! It made me sad when all I got for finishing the game was a deep hole to walk around in. :(
This game was strangely emotionally effective for me. Even with the few French to English errors, just the idea of viewing someone's life in such a short and simple way felt so sad. The end made me laugh though. :P Very good job, a great idea for the theme.
Really great visual style. I liked your sound effects as well. The game was a bit easy, but also a bit addicting. All it needs is a bit more variety (in weapon types, enemies types, etc), but I think you've got something really great here!
Very awesome game, great job! I loved the art style and the music, and I liked the implementation of the theme. Loved it, awesome work!
When the first explosions happened, I had no idea what was going on and I was scared. :P I absolutely loved your game. The music was so fitting, and wandering around the little planet collecting stars and making explosions (once I knew what was going on) is really relaxing. Wonderful job!
Great job! Once I figured out how to play this (by paying attention during the tutorial the second time :P ) it was a lot of fun! Simple but well thought out mechanics, I loved it. The little characters on the cards were cute too, it would have been nice to have art on the building and resource cards, but I'm guessing you ran out of time for that.
The exe file you provided didn't work from the directory it was in. Moving the contents of the dist folder into the root folder (/Dreamworld) allowed me to run the exe.
I liked your graphics and the music (I played it in the background while running your game :P ), but everything else was just incomplete. The controls were strange, collision detection with the walls was definitely off (you could cling to them by holding A/D) and I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. Once I had gotten into the dream world (and was standing in a place that didn't immediately make me fall), holding 'E' did nothing against the slimes, it just ended the game. It's an interesting idea though!
I enjoyed this one! Really impressive animations on the bunny and skeleton characters. Also, walking too fast around heaven allows you to orbit around at insane speeds, which I enjoyed. :P Heaven is much smaller than they want you to believe!
Pretty fun game, I liked the pixel art on the characters and the title screen. The music was nice too! I wasn't always sure that I had hit an enemy though, at first I just thought the gun wasn't working. A different sound cue for a "hit" would probably help there. But, nice job overall!
Amazing job! Loved the graphics and the music. The gameplay was pretty fun, but it wasn't enough to make me want to hunt down all 100 enemies, so I don't know what happens at the end of the game. The pathfinding of the team mates was pretty good too, but they would often get stuck on corners and things like that. But, you did a really great job, especially for only 48 hours!
Very nice, simple little game! I liked the idea of the shots propelling the earth around, very interesting.
This game was a lot of fun! Great job, really addicting!
Pretty fun little game! I liked the "jumping around on asteroids" mechanic, and the cool weapons you could collect. Good job!
I loved your graphical style, and the music was very nice too. The backgrounds were nice, but I didn't have much idea of what I was doing. :P Also, in the area with all the brown baggies, the game just kind of stopped when I tried to go back out through the door.
And as a side note, it's so cute that you and your husband worked on this together. :)
Awesome job! An pretty large game for just 72 hours! Really difficult too, I loved it. Great graphics and level design, the music was really good too. I liked the attack mechanic as well. The only problem was that the collision detection was a bit off when jumping. You'd hit your head on something that seems like you should be able to just go past. But, I really enjoyed your game, great job!
Yeah, Chrome told me the file was malicious when I tried downloading it from the LD site. I'll try to find out why this is and get it fixed asap. I guess it could be because of the file name?
Hmm, I'm not sure what else to try to get it to stop flagging the exe as malicious. I tried compiling it on a different computer, changing some settings, changing the filename. I wish chrome would say why it looks malicious... I've scanned it with Avast! and Ad-Aware and they don't detect anything on the exe.
Hosting the file somewhere other than dropbox appears to have made the file seem less malicious to chrome, for whatever reason. Download speed is way slower though, unfortunately.
Thanks for the feedback folks. If I stop being lazy and take the time to learn Unity or Flash over the next 4 months, my next LD game will be a web game.
Great graphics! The whole visual style of this game is just perfect. Nice mechanics as well, awesome job! I just want to know why gigantic space acorns are trying to destroy earth. D:
Fun little tower defense game! Pretty challenging and felt well balanced. Nice variety in the enemy types.
The player movement was too crazy, would have liked it to be tighter. Combat suffered because of this as well. It's a good idea though!
Pretty fun game, nice work!
Bosses are always so angry. D: I was a little bit unsure about what eating certain things would do, and was pretty much always unable to make my boss happy (I'm wondering if this was the point of the game, or if I was just really bad at it?) Pretty fun entry, though!
Really awesome graphics and physics, and just good overall design. The visual style is really appealing.
Really really difficult game, maybe a bit too difficult. :P I liked the animations on the player, they looked really nice!
I couldn't hear any music either. D: But, I liked the game! I would have liked some more things to do in the game though. But you're right, it is somewhat relaxing. :P
I really liked your graphical style, it looks nice! It's too bad you ran out of time, the graphics combined with some nice action-RPG mechanics would have been awesome.
Really cool concept, the animation for transitioning sides was nice and smooth. I agree with others' comments, it's a bit too easy. Adding some urgency or making the maze harder to navigate would be nice. But, good job! I had fun with this one! I liked being WIN. :P
I loved this entry, great job. The music was wonderful, although I would have liked it to be a bit louder (I had to turn my speakers up a bit too much to hear it better :P ), and there were some pretty devious parts of your level designs. :) I liked the ending too!
Very cool graphics, but I agree, the game needed a bit more instruction. I didn't realize I was fighting the other robot at first. Also, nothing was effective except "ostrich leg" I lol'd. :P Nice graphics though!
Good idea for a game! Some pretty good mechanics here.
I have to echo what others have said, the game is pretty inaccessible. I opened up the howto file, and then just decided "meh, I can probably figure out how to play it just by playing it a bit." I was wrong. So, I went back, read the howto, and then I got it. It's a pretty interesting concept, and the style of the game is very nice. Pretty nice music too. I liked the effect of the cursor above the peoples' heads too. But, most people are not going to want to read a manual to play a game. If you can, try to convey the goals, player abilities, things like that within the game. The initial inaccessibility will definitely turn a lot of people off.
I found a couple of bugs as well.
- The 7 bug that others have stated (no 'wheel_exists' variable)
- If you try to train a youth in front of the brothel, some sound plays over and over making a very loud noise. Then the brothel goes transparent.
- If you die and start a new game with a character selected, the cursor that was over their head will linger throughout your next game. Probably just a matter of cleaning up all of the objects after a game over.
But overall, pretty nice job! One of the more interesting entries I've played.
I absolutely loved this one! Point and click adventures are probably my favorite genre that doesn't get enough love. :P I really enjoyed your story too, depressing stuff.
Interesting! Very much choose-your-own-adventure, I liked it!
Very well written, sir. Nicely done.
I loved this! Excellent art, fun, simple gameplay, good music. Great job you all! The art design of the boss was awesome.
Wow great job, definitely the most fun LD game I've played so far! Loved all of the references as well
Neat little mechanic, nice, simple graphics too. I liked your music track, as well!
Awesome color scheme and graphics, loved the sfx too, good job!
Awesome! Cool idea, herding the humans was good fun. I would suggest some kind of visual/audio cue to indicate that you are successfully hitting a human, since I never was sure I was doing it right until they either turned into a zombie or just walked away. :P
Interesting mechanic, nicely done! It was stressful. :P Nice sprite work as well, great job!
Good job on the art! I couldn't make it past the second jump though, so that's as far as I've seen. :P
Nicely done! I agree with those above, the "gun over the door" puzzle was awesome. Nice job on level design as well.
Really awesome idea, I liked it a lot. The shifting mechanic was cool, really well done!
It was a bit confusing, some explanation of the controls and indication on the UI that I have selected a certain tower before placing it would have helped. And, displaying the cost of the towers is necessary in a game like this so that you can plan for how many resources you need to efficiently build your defences.
Awesome style, but it felt a bit random as to whether or not I was going to do well. It wasn't clear how many clicks I'd need to do to get to the line that I wanted. Maybe just a bit slower ramp up on the speed to give some learning curve? But overall, great job! Really interesting and different idea.
Good idea, but maybe a bit too ambitious an idea for 48 hours. The little guy was cute though! :P
Fun little rogue-like game, I liked the music! The camera movement was a bit jarring, and the ranged enemies felt a little unfair.
Excellent! Really liked this, great music and sprites, really liked the windows HUD too. :P
Weird to try and control both sides, but neat idea! Good job on the AI too, the computer was way better at this than me.
This was excellent, really great job! I loved the main character's quirky walk animation and the unique sound effects. Good use of the theme as well.
Great job, neat idea. I liked the music too! I got stuck on the pacman level though, could never sneak around those damn ghosts. I wouldn't have a chance on the "hard" mode :P
