LD21 — Escape

Prelude of the Chambered by Notch 2011-08-22T18:07:00

Best parts:
- Coding a raycaster from scratch in 2 days is impressive.
- The engine seems stable.
- The level design is compact, having no dead areas or underused items.

Average parts:
- Controls were sluggish at times, and the game flickered occasionally. but I'm thinking my computer is to blame for that.

Weaker parts:
- The chip sounds are fine. However, the richer the visual content is, the richer the sound content should be as well, to create an aesthetic balance. So here I felt there was too little sound. If the monsters made noises, or a simple tune was playing to enhance to mood, that would be better.

Overall: A nice piece of work. Well done. :-)

Prelude of the Chambered by Notch 2011-08-23T11:01:00

@ greasemonkey :

The floor/ceiling mapping appears to be calculated on a per pixel basis, filling in whatever holes remain in the zbuffer. This is the most intensive part I imagine.

Prelude of the Chambered by Notch 2011-08-23T17:15:00

@ Felipe Budinich. I pretty much agree with all you said above. :)

Escape route by JaJ 2011-08-24T22:54:00

A promising game, reminiscent of Sabre Wulf as mentioned above, but the forest here doesn't make sense: I can turn back and end up somewhere I didn't come from. This makes the forest tiresome, because whenever I walked across the screen I felt like it was a wasted effort. Sadly, that made the game unenjoyable. :(

If the forest made sense, this could have been a very enjoyable game.

The game music is quite nice, and I applaud you on that :)

Thruster by sorceress 2011-08-22T09:39:00

Use cursor keys to control the craft:

up=thrust
left/right=spin

Thruster by sorceress 2011-08-22T20:25:00

@ratking.

Thankyou for your comment. I understand what you mean about it not being much fun, but I do feel it is relatively easy to experience flow with the game.

ie, If the player is patient and relaxed, they can pilot the craft slowly and with care, and easily not crash it.

As they gain confidence, they can find pleasure in skillfully piloting their craft at higher speed, and that's when they can get into a 'flow' state. :)

Thruster by sorceress 2011-08-26T19:31:00

I've had that happen to me from time to time... but I like 2shared. I'll upload to mediafire for you in just a mo. :)

LD22 — Alone

Ydunn by Randomasta 2012-01-10T01:03:00

Really nice!

It's Creative to the point of almost feeling like a dream. And in my opinion, that's like the holy grail of entertainment. :)

I especially like how each screen has different gameplay. That makes it feel progressive and transient in the way that dreams are.

I'd love to see a longer game made in this style. Top marks.

Beat the Dragon by Gear 2012-01-09T18:46:00

impossible!

The Knock by Jorjon 2012-01-09T18:16:00

Not my favourite genre, but I feel this is one of the better games in LD22. :)

Many games here feel like they end sooner than they should. But after playing your game for 10 minutes and finishing it, my experience as a player feels complete and satisfying.

The story does feel kind of vague and abstract. I wasn't sure where the story was heading, nor did I really understand the meaning of the things I was triggering, but I think that actually fit well with the atmosphere.

Criticisms: With these kind of escape games, there really needs to be a greater range of things to do. The four tasks at present is really a bare minimum. The missing clue would have been better placed in game. eg, a poster on the left wall by the stairs, which when clicked on shows the periodic table.

A Tale of Seven Kittens by sorceress 2011-12-19T02:42:00

Yes, Well picked up on! :D

Gauntlet did inspire my choice of monsters. The ghosts have a suicide attack that does 250% damage. Note the red dragons that spit fire too.

A Tale of Seven Kittens by sorceress 2011-12-20T11:44:00

Thankyou all for your feedback.

matthias: I was aware of A/Z issue when I wrote it, and being able to redefine keys was a low priority for me. I never thought of using S/X.

caranha: I chose 7 slots because that's how many fit across the bottom, but it seemed like a nice number too. :)

7 kittens were chosen because there is one for each slot. You can carry them with you as you play, or remember where they are and gather them up after you've killed everything.

In the spirit of games like Dungeon Master, there is no map, but you are free to make your own map. I considered adding a compass item, but there was no time.

The knock back idea is good. I'll definitely add that to an improved version over the coming weeks, thanks!

You can't pick up higher level items, no. It was easier to do it like that than write logic to see if an inventory item can be used.

Jacic: Yes, it just closes. In my final playtest I realised that I had -260HP because I totally forgot about the death condition! I didn't have time to add a proper one.

A Tale of Seven Kittens by sorceress 2011-12-20T15:17:00

To clarify: You can't pick up higher level items than your current player level.

A Tale of Seven Kittens by sorceress 2011-12-21T13:27:00

It's normal for games to be quite long and have some depth of gameplay. It takes upto one hour to play through this, which I think is sensible for a dungeon crawler.

I detest games with shallow/mindless gameplay or those which are over in five minutes. Those are more like distractions than games.

A Tale of Seven Kittens by sorceress 2011-12-21T19:36:00

Notch didn't invent Raycasters. Do you honestly think he did?!! They were all the rage 20 years ago. Go look them up, then come back here and apologize.

A Tale of Seven Kittens by sorceress 2011-12-22T11:07:00

Setech: Yes they're procedurally generated, using the name you type in during the intro as a seed.

A Tale of Seven Kittens by sorceress 2011-12-23T12:15:00

The dungeon size is set at 64 rooms. I originally chose 16 rooms, but I felt that was too small when I played it through, so it got a quadrupling. ;)

None Alone by galman 2011-12-20T16:27:00

nice game :)

LD23 — Tiny World

Killer the Ant by Ben 2012-04-26T22:22:00

It's simplistic, but it made me laugh, like hearing a good joke. Make more games that feel like this :)

SAVE YOUR FOLKS! by ilikescifi 2012-04-24T15:00:00

I bet Fred Dibnah would have liked this.

Planet Life by Sos 2012-04-23T15:45:00

Quite fun, but a bit too linear maybe. And is that the 'World of Chip' music I hear on the youtube video? :D

Atom Planet by NMcCoy 2012-04-24T21:19:00

Fun once you get the hang of it, but it's not very intuitive to pick up. There is also potential for a lot of waste from trial and error... But I did manage to finish it. :)

Real War by nuprahtor 2012-05-03T12:42:00

Sako by Xam 2012-05-13T22:32:00

Lovely sound and graphics, but the gameplay kind of lets it down.

The Tiny World of Fiorella by strega 2012-05-03T10:47:00

Graphics/sound are good. However, I feel that movement is a little too slow, and combat is not as satisfying as it could be.

Curse Of Grimwood by sorceress 2012-04-25T10:21:00

dr_soda: I'd forgotten to write in the description that the CTRL key is attack. Thank-you all for your comments. ^_^

LD24 — Evolution

Badass by Sos 2012-08-27T22:38:00

Pleasant art style and good humour.

Fantasy Map Tactics by McFunkypants 2012-09-12T20:19:00

A good concept with a interesting graphics style, but this game is far too easy!

Thrust by bmfs 2012-09-05T12:20:00

All I get is the player ship. I can control it but nothing approaches. There is not much here to rate unfortunately.

Prometheus by sorceress 2012-08-31T10:59:00

Priest > Demons ;)

Prometheus by sorceress 2012-08-31T22:59:00

Yeah sorry. I'm aware of that bug. The function that computes XP bounds returns short integers, which overflows once you hit level 25. :(

Prometheus by sorceress 2012-09-05T19:53:00

You right-click the point you want to attack. If that point is out of your attack range, then you do a "push" = a combination of attacking and stepping forward.

LD26 — Minimalism

Space Captant by Norgg 2013-05-11T00:10:00

I enjoyed the feel of this game greatly: It is gentle yet mesmeric, with a surrealist layer from this being an ant inhabited potato galaxy. All in all it reminds me of the Clangers, which is awesome. :D

And if only these ants made discoveries and had adventures like the Clangers... you would have something very special.

The graphics do feel over simplistic however - I think the game could retain it's feeling and benefit from more detailed art. Sound effects too - although the music you have made is perfect for the game,

LD27 — 10 Seconds

10 by Benn 2013-09-01T13:43:00

Quite challenging... Then I realised my keyboard doesn't like two cursor keys pressed with spacebar. After adapting to that I was able to complete the game quite easily. Innovative in design, and elegant in presentation. Well done :)

Bragmor the Barbarian by Codexus 2013-08-29T22:05:00

Quite fun. I like the animations and sounds, and the game has good mood and humour too. It's all quality stuff. But on the negative side, the gameplay feels a little weak to me when considered alongside the art and sound.

Melee combat becomes most interesting when it feels more tactical, like being able to jump in/out of combat, or perform aoe attacks that stun all in range so you can crowd control. I can easily imagine this game being fleshed out into something more substantial should you want to develop the idea further... perhaps with a quest system to give a purpose and goal to each mission that Bragmor undertakes?

Good work overall!

At the cafe by Pierrec 2013-08-29T22:36:00

très bon. simple, mais amusant. :)

The Lost Robos by almightyzentaco 2013-08-31T16:30:00

This game has a lot of potential I think. There are lots of possibilities with these mechanics. I like the graphics and the gameplay, and overall I found it enjoyable.

I played the game upto the Elevation level. But the timings on that level felt too tight imo. After failing it by half a second several times over, I'm afraid I lost interest in trying again.

This kind of game would benefit from the player being able to select the level they want to play, so they aren't forced to try and fail the same level over and over. eg, if there were 64 levels organised into 8 tiers, and you have to complete half of the levels in tier N before tier N+1 is unlocked.

LD28 — You Only Get One

faif by Beavl 2013-12-24T00:33:00

Interesting idea, but it becomes quite mindless once we figure out the optimal strategy: 5 hearts (whenever that appears, which is rare), else 3 daggers+2 skulls (which is always available).

failure by sorceress 2013-12-23T13:10:00

I decided to pull it the next day after submitting, because this game isn't up to my usual standard. Sorry for the inconvenience.

LD29 — Beneath the Surface

ScubaBear by _Rilem 2014-05-12T16:58:00

I got all the treasures! Perfect game. I had a wonderful time playing this! It would be great if you could find a way to generate maps procedurally, for replay value.

A Glorious Escape for A Lich King by Benjamin 2014-05-08T13:03:00

It's a good design, but the game freezes part way through as I'm building a spiral maze of towers. Suspect it's a pathfinding error if orcs block the path in?

Hare's Harvest by mtrc 2014-05-08T11:20:00

completed, and it was enjoyable. Movement felt a little sluggish though. I'd like to be able to move quicker.

Diamond Diggers by chocobyte 2014-04-30T14:50:00

not bad :) But as others have said above, the collision detection is not quite right. And I take it I'm not supposed to be able to break the grey bedrock around the perimeter? (which can be broken by jumping at it)

An Ode to Violence by Benn 2014-04-30T10:43:00

nice. I would have liked to see greater retaliation from the paratroopers. And where is my hiscore? :P Nice to see you use more colours in your games too :)

Winter Is Coming . . . by PixelFeet 2014-04-30T14:42:00

score 254. Nice once it gets going, but it's very slow paced for the first 5 minutes. I ran out of nutrients at the end as you did. The amount of nutrients randomly generated at the beginning seems to determine the ending.

Subocula by DrMelon 2014-04-30T22:24:00

Lovely feeling to this game. Very memorable. :) I achieved both endings.

Warpigs by sorceress 2014-04-30T01:47:00

Fixed. Dropbox does normally give me a dl.dropboxusercontent.com url. Don't know how I ended up with that other. :/

Warpigs by sorceress 2014-04-30T11:55:00

Thanks for the feedback :)
Tititesouris: I disagree that the game is so imbalanced. It is fast paced though, so you can't hang about!
cageinabird: Unfortunately not all of the hotkeys were added.

Warpigs by sorceress 2014-05-22T21:29:00

Harvest as close to the market hall as possible. Get about 13 pigs asap. Then buy 5 archers. Then send them to fight! Don't let units die. Always remove injured to safety and let them heal. Buy replacements. Mix it up with other units to see how they work in combination.

LD31 — Entire Game on One Screen

Snakkke by ratking 2014-12-09T21:25:00

LD35 — Shapeshift

Elemental Shift by TimBeaudet 2016-05-04T18:03:00

I used a similar idea for LD24. You have a nice design, and the music you've made is lovely. The gameplay felt a little sluggish to me however. I feel adding knockback would help with that.

Chocolate box factory by BoltKey 2016-04-23T12:21:00

beautiful story :~)

STONECONF 12,016 BC by Tijn 2016-08-31T22:14:00

Interesting idea. The game is enjoyable, the writing is good, and the game is beautifully made.

I think the range of encounters is sufficient. Experiencing an encounter for the first time, we have to play trial-and-error to learn how to pass it safely. A larger array of encouters would only increase the chance of dying. five plays and I haven't yet managed to get to the conference.

After playing the game these five times, the text scroll speed is starting to feel a little slow. I would have liked a show-all-text button.

There is no indicator for how far the conference is away, which makes it hard to know how best to ration provisions. I'm left wondering, is it two more steps away? ten more? fifty more? Just how close did I get to winning? I don't know if I did well or not.

There is a heavy focus on the need for food and water and rest. This area of the game demands a lot of care and management, so that we don't run out of some provision. And it's almost constantly there in the text. I feel this detracted a little from the enjoyment of the encounters.

For future expansion, I suggest having multiple levels: after each conference, have a new invention like "fire" or "pants", and a new voyage to stoneconf, which adds new types of encounters so that the game doesn't become stale once players have learned how to solve it.

Leonardo's Painting Machine by Frozen Fractal 2016-08-29T16:35:00

Nicely made. I completed the first 5 levels, but I felt it became a bit tedious once the counters appeared.
