LD24 — Evolution

Living Tales by tinyworlds 2012-08-28T04:24:00

Interesting - I wish I were better able to understand the dynamics and relationships between the objects I added. It didn't help that a lot of the time they appeared overlapped with each other and I couldn't see everything...

Soul Jar by farmergnome 2012-09-13T06:22:00

Awesome art and mood. It's some of the most inspiring pixel art for a game I've ever seen, 48 hours or not! I liked the beginning few minutes but I couldn't seem to get very far...

CritterLab by berkano 2012-08-28T07:41:00

@mappum that sounds just like the game I made, Ninjural Selection. :P

Deal with It by midgard 2012-08-28T06:44:00

I fell through the floor in the first level and couldn't respawn. :(

'Volver by Wyatt White 2012-08-28T05:15:00

I tried to play but couldn't figure out what was going on.

Evolution Strategy (Web) by Kickerua 2012-08-28T07:45:00

I wasn't even sure what color I was supposed to be controlling... I went for the fried eggs. :)

Evolution Defense by franklyn 2012-08-28T07:40:00

Yay, I beat it! It would have been really nice if on the upgrade screen, it actually showed you how many points you had and how much things cost. Even further, bring up the upgrade screen at natural points so the player doesn't have to think of doing it - I died the first time because I had no idea I had any money to spend in the first place...

Darwin Defenders by hi-scor.es 2012-08-28T06:02:00

Nice! I'm really glad to see a game with evolving enemies like this. :) The fixed-direction shooting is a great way to make the ship design significant.

I couldn't tell what the orange spikes are for - at first I was hoping I could use them to ram other ships... Repeatedly clicking to shoot was tiring and unpleasant, though. It was a lot more fun once I got a second gun - maybe you could make those more likely to appear. I would have liked to see the enemies speed up once I got more powerful. It gets boring otherwise.

Cubevo by NostraDamon 2012-09-13T06:11:00

Awesome mood. This could be like a weird game-like dream. It feels so cool. The gameplay was confusing at first, but I kind of enjoyed figuring it out. And the tedious completionistic filling-in of every box actually appeals to me, because I get to see the world transform as I do it (and the EvoGem rewards help too). I really enjoyed seeing that first 6 box hidden across the water, and trying to figure out how to get across.

One of my favorites in the competition so far! :D

LimiT by Sakuyan 2012-09-13T05:12:00

I liked the art, and I was disappointed that I could not get past the second stage, the jumping creature.

Oculus Battalion by Maxium 2012-09-13T04:44:00

I like the art style (the overall mood is cool) but I am terrible at FPS controls, especially with the mouse as twitchy as this. I kept dying right away. I would have appreciated if the vertical axis were ignored, like in Doom, where you just have to aim side-to-side.

Ivan the Infection by AuxiliumGames 2012-08-28T03:25:00

Darn, I was hoping that I'd be able to gain immunity by getting hit by an enemy of a certain color! If your health slowly regenerated, you could play it that way, where you can only build up immunity to one color, so you have to choose - kind of like Ikaruga except way slower...

Cellception by DiG 2012-09-13T05:34:00

I couldn't find any red cells smaller than me. :(

Unstable Planet by HunLyxxod 2012-08-28T06:17:00

I couldn't run either executable, even after running the OpenAL installer. :( I was hoping to try this game, because I'm really curious about the procedural level generation...

Survival of the Fittest by codesavage 2012-08-28T05:39:00

I liked the art a lot. The movement felt slow relative to the spaciousness of the environments - though maybe that was just my computer being slow, I'm not sure.

Treevolution by djacobs7 2012-08-28T06:34:00

Art and music were great, personality and humor were great too. I wish the game moved faster so I spent more time making choices and less waiting for the animation to hurry up already. Maybe my computer just chugs when the tree gets too leafy. :P But still.

It would be great to see this on an iPhone or something. Something faster.

Evolution Is A Boring Theme by iamwhosiam 2012-08-28T05:10:00

Yay, I got to the credits song! :)

Really funny. But I have to say, there's no such thing as a "boring" theme, only uncreative game designers. ;)

Darwinphony by philosophistry 2012-08-28T08:36:00

Once I watched the video, then I had fun with this! Very nice. :)

Defend The Galaxy by lbrande 2012-08-28T06:30:00

The turning speed is so slow and the bullets are so tiny that it is really hard to aim to hit even one circle. Some tuning would help a lot. I don't see the evolution theme though.

Pixelomoeba by PickledBrain 2012-08-28T07:15:00

Nice concept. I found it hard to manage six keys at once - the turning was a bit much, but I'd probably get used to it with practice. More fluid mouse controls with ragdolling attachments and a fast pace could be awesome...

UN-Natural Selection by Haddy22 2012-08-28T05:49:00

Works great for me. :) Really glad to see a game that actually involves evolution as the basic mechanic.

Threevolution by dredlockz 2012-08-28T08:11:00

Really nice mechanics - reminded me of Triple Town (in a good way). I think it could have worked better with a different theme - the "grass, bush, tree, hut" progression of Triple Town worked better then the "one circle, two circle, three circle" of this game. Could be worth expanding on.

Tokemon! VI : Struggle for eternity by codl 2012-08-28T06:23:00

I see only a source link... Something playable would be helpful if you want to get more ratings.

The life of Cat by Amoaeba Junior 2012-09-13T05:20:00

I really liked the music. I liked the concept too, but I was disappointed at how un-cat-like the experience was. I tried to pretend that it was an imaginary non-cat creature so I could enjoy it better. ;)

Evo by nseward 2012-08-28T05:55:00

I would have liked it a lot better if the player movement speed were much faster. Why put an artificial barrier between my understanding and my implementation of that understanding?

GONADS by madlee 2012-08-28T06:49:00

Just got a blank gray page. Couldn't play. Sorry, looked really cool from the screen shots.

BATTLE ARENA PARTY 7! by QualityAssurance 2012-08-28T06:27:00

I liked the concept, and the music is awesome. But there is no feedback during the battle to see how the stats and abilities are put into play. I think there could be a lot of potential here, it's just too invisible...

CellAnt by Bzaraticus 2012-08-28T06:21:00

It seems promising, and I like the pixel ants, but nothing I did seemed to affect the game... :(

Firefly by timtipgames 2012-08-28T08:15:00

Sounds really cool - glad to see actual evolution mechanics - but wouldn't run on my computer. :(

Mesh by SimianLogic 2012-08-28T05:32:00

I really like the concept. I've thought along these lines too before, and I think there is a lot of potential to explore here.

I think I'd prefer to play this as an action game rather than a puzzle game. I like the feel of swiping off pixels, but I think it would flow a bit better if the broken-off pixels moved around less, so there's not this big break in the action just to collect them again. And I would have liked to be able to collect the pixels and have them add to my structure, not just repair my structure.

Hard Life 3X by echa 2012-09-13T04:50:00

Really intriguing mechanics, but maybe tuned a bit too hard at first. Would be nice to ease into it more. Worth exploring further! :)

Triple Threat by rylgh 2012-08-28T06:38:00

Cool concept - would have been nice to try playing against someone. Also, I had a hard time seeing the whole screen on my 1024x758 laptop...

Kitty Breeder 2012 by turnip 2012-08-28T07:11:00

Great music. I like the concept and the personality of the game. I found the colors hard to tell apart - maybe they could be more saturated. I also found it hard to know how to affect things in a useful way - there was no way to remove kitties that I didn't want...

Existence : Evolving with Videogames by Richard Matey 2012-08-28T09:14:00

I really liked the style of the first world, but I got stuck trying to jump up the building on the second. How is it possible?

Guppies by Lord_Fluffy 2012-08-28T09:10:00

I had my eyes closed the first time I got eaten. That was really scary! (in a good way) :D

Crab by Mayto 2012-08-28T04:48:00

I really like the way you create a mood with the art and sound, and I like the pixel art. I like how the avatar is more abstract, a red bubble rather than a person walking around - I think the game is actually better because of it. It would have been nice to have the experience a little more fleshed out, but overall it was great.

I just don't see the connection to the theme at all...

GiRL2501 by braingale 2012-08-28T06:09:00

Sadly all I got was audio and a bunch of vertical lines of various colors. I'm guessing it's my computer's fault.

Modula by The Jahn 2012-08-28T03:44:00

I like the idea of it, and the way turning is tied to left and right movement was cool, but there was one big frustration with it - I would quickly get my guns shot off and then have nothing to do but kill myself to get a new life. Because of that I never got into the flow of it.

Next Generation by r3d5 2012-08-28T05:44:00

I could not figure out how to choose to attack or mate. I could only move around and starve to death. :(

Future Rabbit by airdeck 2012-08-28T05:25:00

Awesome graphics! :D I like the simplicity of the gameplay, the nice way it fits together. And the cute humor of the story and setting is nice too.

Dig, Jesus! Dig! by monkeymad2 2012-08-28T07:48:00

Heh, almost like Tetris... in reverse, somehow. I like the way digging feels. :P

Hotdoggin by Goodlookinguy 2012-08-28T05:35:00

Heh, that was quick. :P I beat up one guy and then I win? Not sure if that's a bug or not...

I like the dancing palm trees.

Species by mappum 2012-08-28T05:03:00

I liked the mood, but found the awkward movement distracting. Later on, the pacing felt broken by how long it took to walk around, while my hand started to hurt. I also found it removed a lot of fear once it seemed that I couldn't actually get hurt.

Ninjural Selection by axcho 2012-08-29T15:41:00

Thanks for all the great feedback, everyone! :D I just updated the post-competition version with faster acceleration, to address the concerns about the controls. I'm still working on adding goals - I wish I could spend all day working on this but I'm supposed to go to my real job now...

Oh, here's the algorithm for creating the creature sprites:

Make a blank white bitmap.
For each pixel on the left half:
If a coin flip is heads:
Turn the pixel black.
Turn the opposite pixel black on the right half.
Flood fill the outside with transparent pixels.

:)

I'll be back!

Ninjural Selection by axcho 2012-08-29T15:42:00

Hmm, the formatting didn't turn out so well on that algorithm. Let me try again...

- Make a blank white bitmap.
- For each pixel on the left half:
- - If a coin flip is heads:
- - - Turn the pixel black.
- - - Turn the opposite pixel black on the right half.
Flood fill the outside with transparent pixels.

Ninjural Selection by axcho 2012-08-29T15:44:00

Urgh, okay, one more try...

- Make a blank white bitmap.
- For each pixel on the left half:
- - If a coin flip is heads:
- - - Turn the pixel black.
- - - Turn the opposite pixel black on the right half.
- Flood fill the outside with transparent pixels.

Ninjural Selection by axcho 2012-09-04T00:29:00

Okay, I added a goal! :D Check out the updated version, and let me know what you think! You have to evolve the invaders to look like a certain one...

Ninjural Selection by axcho 2012-09-11T19:44:00

Thanks for all the great feedback! :D

The speedy performance is thanks to the Flixel engine, which is made for this kind of thing (low-res platformers).

I'm definitely going to do something with the nice platformer controls and the character. Mixed with evolution gameplay it's pretty broken, so I might just rip that out if I can't get it to work with some radical changes, but I'm definitely going to do something with the ninja guy...

One Last Chance by recursive frog 2012-08-28T04:02:00

Great concept, I enjoyed the change of perspective - didn't quite see the connection to "evolution" though... Navigating the rooms was a bit clumsy, especially without the ability to back up.

Cool to see a more storytelling-focused approach pay off. Nice. :)

LD26 — Minimalism

Undercolor Agents by farmergnome 2013-05-03T05:22:00

How do I start the game? I'm guessing there's a button that doesn't show up on my 1024x768 display... :(

Undercolor Agents by farmergnome 2013-05-04T04:35:00

Unfortunately going fullscreen with alt-enter didn't help. The screen is still cut off at the sides. :(

Love Connection by Jon Reid 2013-05-03T04:22:00

Nice polish, but I have to say the confetti and box that pops up after each level was less of a reward and more of an annoyance - I'd feel more rewarded by getting to play the next level sooner!

The Lamp by Catman 2013-05-03T04:13:00

The alternating light and dark is a very clever way to structure the experience. I like it. The sounds are great too - they really make it scary, not just frustrating.

Distradiction by shines 2013-05-03T05:06:00

Reminds me a bit of IvoryDrive's game Orange... Did you ever play that?

Double Edged by pereubu 2013-05-03T04:08:00

Love that graphic, contrasty style. And the robots with swords. ;)

Swimming Fool by blackmagic 2013-05-05T21:39:00

Looks great, but runs at about 2 fps for me. :/ There's no reason that a Flash game should have to depend on GPU-acceleration for this kind of art style...

Priorities by hissssssssss 2013-05-03T07:11:00

I had two spouses, a boyfriend and a girlfriend. :p

I didn't realize there were multiple screens until re-read the instructions. I did find it odd that I was giving my attention to the things I didn't want instead of focusing on the things I did want, despite the fiction of the game. Seems kinda backward.

My Mini Castle by TijmenTio 2013-05-03T05:58:00

Nice polish. I like the solid chunkiness of the art and the mechanics.

Coder by RealyUniqueName 2013-04-29T03:30:00

Ha, I'm delighted to see someone actually make a game about refactoring. I have to say, though, the blocks being different colors really threw me off - I was trying to match colors the entire time my first try until I realized it was probably more like Tetris. As far as being minimal, keeping all the blocks the same color would make a lot of sense and also make the game more understandable. Another thing that would help is to make sure the player gets a successful line-clear early on, so they know what they're going for. I wasn't really sure what "success" would like look at first, and I ended up guessing wrong. If you have time, it might be worth prototyping a version of this where blocks disappear when four or more of the same color are touching.

I Know Nothing by MathiO 2013-05-03T05:58:00

Wow! Very reminiscent of the minimal exploration of Small Worlds but you've also managed to distill the essence of Metroidvania progression in a really elegant way! Almost like a reverse-Katamari... :)

I Know Nothing by MathiO 2013-05-03T06:01:00

Terrible ending, though. ;)

Bladeless by kidevil 2013-04-30T05:49:00

Very cool to see something (perhaps?) inspired by Iaido. I found it difficult to learn the cues for which block would counter the coming attack, so I wonder if it might be a more enjoyable experience if it started with only one height level, then two different height levels, then three. Still very cool though.

Double Hydra by CosmicAdventureSquad 2013-04-30T05:35:00

Wow, I love the art style! It's so cool to styles that have formal constraints along the lines of pixel art but aren't actually pixel art - maybe I should try it sometime. :) I also really appreciate the simplicity of the gameplay system - it feels like something I could have programming on my graphing calculator back when I was in middle school (nostalgia!).

CLRS by acatcalledfrank 2013-05-03T07:14:00

Cool idea. I couldn't figure out how to do the mixing. It would be nice to make the drawing itself a bit more strategic, somehow...

fightfightfight by bleatingheart 2013-05-03T05:25:00

Hahaha, the music totally makes this game. It was great when I first went into a town... then stole stuff, and fought chickens... Heh.

Unfurl by TeamEagle 2013-05-03T04:07:00

If I were into these kinds of puzzle games, I would really like this. As it is, I played a few levels, appreciated the elegance of the design, and moved on. :)

Seed by whitetigle 2013-05-03T05:58:00

I love the art style, but I did not understand what I was doing. I could make the towers grow, but there didn't seem to be much challenge or expressiveness to explore.

Drimonna by Colapsydo 2013-05-03T04:02:00

Ha, I won! :D I'm delighted to see such an original take on a minimal strategy game, nice work!

LOOP by vandriver 2013-05-03T05:36:00

I couldn't figure out how to get the heart and gave up. :/ The guy's voice sound was funny though.

First, You Take A Potato by KevinZuhn 2013-05-03T07:07:00

Very nice. I should mention that for a long time I saw the text as coming from the other robot in the middle of the screen. But it didn't really detract from the experience.

Were you intentionally going for a "notgame" approach? :)
