LD22 — Alone

The Unfortunate State of Being Alone by youdonotexist 2012-01-09T16:14:00

@defiantburrito I didn't like the ending either. I had more grandeur plans in mind for the story, but (as usual) didn't have the time to fully implement them.

So is the life of an LD game. :)

Asteroids: Alone Edition by the31 2011-12-20T06:32:00

I will wait until the GOTY Edition comes out.

Last breath by deepnight 2011-12-20T06:56:00

Can't be said enough.. beautiful art, tight controls (dog putting his paw on the wall when you run into it.. just perfect), music is awesome.

The Animals are Deadly by Farfin 2011-12-20T06:41:00

I like the concept, but I felt like it was more work than play. I didn't quite understand the purpose of the van moving around.

Music was great and fit the mood.

I saw birds and wolves, but no cats. I am disappoint. ;)

Space Ghost by madmaw 2011-12-20T05:57:00

This is an awesome idea! It reminds me of the gif that shows what sin(t) looks like and how it relates to a circle (http://js.2x.io/trig-paperjs.html)

Visual stuff like that makes it much easier to grasp what's going on behind the numbers.

The only frustrating I encountered was.. I wish it was more of a text box interface and not a command line. The command line made it difficult to try different things, swap out components and keep another, copy and paste, etc.

Other than that, overall a great game!

You're Alone. by Strkl 2011-12-20T06:46:00

I really enjoyed this game. I managed to get myself stuck in some geometry, but was able to beat the 4 starter enemies.

And then the whole circle started attacking. It was pretty epic.

I could see this being the foundation of a very fun game.

None Alone by galman 2011-12-22T07:13:00

Great game! Incredibly addictive. I beat every level.

Graphics could use a little love (not the prettiest choice of colors ;) ), but with solid gameplay and some graphics love, you'll have yourself a great little puzzler.

YAE! You Against Everyone by Per 2011-12-20T06:25:00

Ahh, this game brings me back to my high school days.

I attempted to beat the game by just avoiding everyone and trying to find the exit, but I ended up getting cornered and having the snot beat out of me. So, it's super realistic!

Overall, it's an interesting concept.

Balloon by felixl 2011-12-20T06:34:00

Same as above. Pressing any key does nothing.

Spaceman Samotny by zairon 2011-12-20T05:27:00

Running OS X Lion here.. I was unable to load this in browser. It would show the LWJGL logo.. and get to about 50%, then show an blank white page. Let me know if you fix!

Spaceman Samotny by zairon 2011-12-20T05:31:00

Forgot to mention.. browser was Chrome.

Do NOT Hug Me! by ziomorti 2012-01-08T20:12:00

Great fun. Lots of button mashing, but the variety of weapons added a bit of strategy. Would benefit from having platforms or other areas where you can move to.

Alone in the Universe by KhaoTom 2012-01-09T07:57:00

I loved the style. I think exploration has trouble existing by itself as a game mechanic without immediate feedback or metrics to let the player how much exploration they've done. In this case, it would have benefitted the player to know how far they've traveled.. or how close they are before they can no longer explore.

But, still awesome for a 48 hour entry. This has lots of potential!

Expecting a Call by devwil 2011-12-20T06:02:00

I like this. It seems like a concept you could build up on, especially on a multi-touch interface (I ONLY HAVE ONE MOUSE CLICK TO GIVE!)

The game started off as addicting, but very quickly tapered off. Adding some sort of element that changes things up a bit (outside of speed) would definitely keep me playing longer.

The Cheese Stands Alone by tSwitch 2011-12-20T06:08:00

Definitely the foundation for a fun game. I played on normal mode.. but it seemed like the game would degenerate into me moving from each corner of the screen over and over again (until I got the highest score, of course).

The AI could be a bit better (instead of just grouping together after the first couple of times around).

OMFG FFS will you LEAVE me ALONE by yerahmeel 2011-12-20T06:14:00

This was just great. I really enjoyed the mechanics behind the guns (reloading = the amount of time you spent shooting) and made the decision more strategic when it came to choosing to stick with my current gun or move to another for the next batch of baddies.

I didn't quite understand what the power ups did, but that may have been because I wanted to go back to shooting people.

Great work!

I Should Go Back by ArchPenguinBot 2011-12-21T02:33:00

I like this quirky kind of humor that balances very well between believable and ridiculous.

The art and music were great, however I agree with the others that the puzzle was too much in one place. I like the concept of being in a enclosed area and using the surroundings to solve puzzles, though. (Similar to my LD entry: http://t.co/vUDVpFje)

Alone by Oxydam 2011-12-20T06:50:00

I liked the feeling of this game. The gentle blowing wind made it more relaxing to play, like the solitude of going on a hike.

Certain jumps had to be just perfect, which got a bit frustrating, but I liked the super meatboy-esque wall jumping.

Kitten's Missions by irl 2011-12-20T05:45:00

I definitely agree with the above comments.

There are tons of games to go through. Without an executable, this will probably be one of the games I go back to once I've reviewed all the others.

Leave me alone! by gz-online.org 2011-12-20T05:43:00

This was a cool concept. I do agree that the memes were a little distracting, but I think that fits with the mood (forever alone is the main character).

I could definitely see this, with some additional work, being a fun little mobile game.

LD23 — Tiny World

Le Petit by Pixelulsar 2012-04-26T20:32:00

Can we get a Mac/Unix/Web version of this? I'd like to play, but I don't have a Windows machine.

Corgi Recon Force by sirpalee 2012-04-25T18:18:00

If possible, but put an Mac/Unix/Web version of this. I don't have access to a windows machine. :(

World Saver! by Zythiku 2012-04-24T04:16:00

Had trouble getting my bearings in this game. Controls felt a bit weird (even after playing around with the sensitivity).

I like the spherical world concept and the visuals were very interesting.

Greed Wars by IgnatusZuk 2012-04-24T05:00:00

Perfectly executed. Make me an online multiplayer version of this, please!

My only criticism is that the rocket and machine gun turrets didn't seem to be shooting ammo (but they were causing damage).

Space Dozer by desmarkie 2012-04-26T20:31:00

I really enjoyed this game.

My only complaint is the height of the builds seems superflous. You CAN shoot the other floors of a building, but I spent the majority of the time down at the planet surface, shooting the first floor.

Gale Axile by free_napalm 2012-04-26T20:24:00

Could we get a Mac/Unix/Web build of this? I don't have access to a Windows machine.

Solenopsis Invicta by CoffeeOnimal 2012-04-24T04:42:00

I could see this being a really good resource management game. Though, right now there is a lack of feedback as to when I'm doing something and controlling the ants is a bit confusing.

The bird added an awesome sense of "OH SHIT GET OUT OF THE WAY" to the 'day in the life of an ant' simulator.

INSANE MEGASNAIL PENETRATION by SukiSan 2012-04-24T04:01:00

Ditto. Could we get a mac/unix/web version?

These are your Friends by Farfin 2012-04-24T04:36:00

Picking up enemies is very hard. Either the enemies need to be larger, or there needs to be a better indicator on the hand.

Also, I found major slowdowns with the arm after playing past the first death (running a pretty beefy OS X laptop).

This game definitely has lots of potential in terms of being fun. With some more structure I could see this becoming an interesting spin on the tower defense genre.

Petri-Dish Survival by Rex Peppers 2012-04-24T04:45:00

I had trouble on the third level getting past the green amoeba thing (it seemed to be moving incredibly fast).

Interesting environment.

LittlePlanetBigRocket by daredevildave 2012-04-24T04:08:00

This game reminded me a bit of Fez. The perspective made it a bit difficult to know exactly where my character was with respect to enemies.

Other than the perspective, I thought that this was a good use of the world-turning mechanic.

ResourceCollector by SaiKai 2012-04-26T20:18:00

Is it possible to get a Mac/Unix/Web version of this?

Friends and Foes by Gjarble 2012-04-24T04:25:00

I really liked this game, though I found it to be very hard.

It seems like if you manage to collect a white square, it should protect you a from red square regardless of if the two collide (this may have been part of the bug mentioned above). It's just too difficult to try to make the two squares collide while flying around (usually it would just happen when I got lucky).

Other than that, the mechanics seem pretty solid.

Friends and Foes by Gjarble 2012-04-24T21:29:00

I like the idea of being able to control when the fly protects you.

However, it seems like that would just become something that the player would abuse and just always be tapping up when they're flying around. If there were something like a.. power-down on the white fly so it could only rapid-spin for so long before it needed to rest, that would make it so the player would need to time when/if they're going to use the white fly as protection.

Submarine: This Ain't Your Momma's Bathtub, Tovarisch by kibertoad 2012-04-24T19:49:00

I'm on a Mac and tried to load the Linux version, but got a stacktrace:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: Resource not found: fonts\droid_sans_20_outline_0.png

However, I'm not sure if this is even playable on a Mac. I verified that there aren't any file permission or ownership issues. I can see the fonts/droid_sans_20_outline_0.png resource, but it's failing to load for some reason.

Any thoughts?

Submarine: This Ain't Your Momma's Bathtub, Tovarisch by kibertoad 2012-04-24T19:50:00

@oldtopman you need to modify the linux.sh file to not have a space between the = and the word lib.

Before:
java -Djava.library.path= lib -jar preui.jar

After:
java -Djava.library.path=lib -jar preui.jar

Submarine: This Ain't Your Momma's Bathtub, Tovarisch by kibertoad 2012-04-24T20:51:00

@kibertoad: Correct. With the fixed sh file, I can get the game to load up to a black screen, but the log spits out:

Loading: net.java.games.input.OSXEnvironmentPlugin

And then crashes. I'll play around with it a bit more to see if there's something screwy with the filesystem. If any other Mac folks can try this out, we can verify if it's a Mac problem or a Me problem. ;)

Submarine: This Ain't Your Momma's Bathtub, Tovarisch by kibertoad 2012-04-25T00:30:00

@kibertoad New build got past the image loading, but failed again at loading the music (with an OutOfMemoryError).

I defined the amount of memory in the linux.sh file and it's working now. I wanted to post this as quick as possible so the appropriate changes can be made and re-uploaded. (aka, I'll put my review up shortly)

A Cube Race by EddNorris 2012-04-25T17:34:00

Very interesting gameplay. I like the idea of shifting the world in to get to get around obstacles.

Only three suggestions:
1. Make the final goal more visible
2. Make moving between different cube faces quicker
3. When the player moves to a new cube face, orient the player to face the direction of the path

Great work!

Fire Around by Naouak 2012-04-26T20:21:00

I can't play, as I don't have a Windows machine. I know it's not possible to port XNA games to Mac/Unix, however, I'm still leaving a comment as an indication of a lost potential rating.

Mothership: The Sequel by youdonotexist 2012-12-22T02:28:00

@Crowbeak: Yeah, I had some issues with getting the full-screen web player to play nicely with fullscreen. If the windowed version is too small/large, you can do a ctrl+ or ctrl- to shrink/grow the screen (click on the whitespace around the game window to give focus to the browser).

There's also a later build that changes to 4:3, since that provides a more consistent resolution between the two: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5071647/games/Mothership-TS/Mothership-TS.html

@StMatn Thanks for putting up a Mac build.

What JRE version are you compiling with? I'm getting a "Unsupported major.minor version 51.0" error when trying to run it.

Doing a 'java -version' returns :

java version "1.6.0_37"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909)

The only thing I could find with regard to what's going on was on Stackoverflow:

Hope this helps. If you're on twitter, ping me (@youdonotexist) if you need any help you troubleshooting your mac build.

Who stole christmas by StMatn 2012-12-21T04:46:00

@StMatn: I was able to get it running on my Mac by installing the 1.7 JDK from Oracle's site. Not the most optimal solution, but it worked.

I had a lot of fun playing this game. Awesome Christmas-themed execution of the stealth genre. My only nitpick was that collisions were a bit unforgiving and got caught while struggling to fit between a wall and a table.

I loved the art and gameplay. I felt like there wasn't enough feedback as to how the button and the door and the light were connected, but I was able to solve that puzzle without actually fully understanding it. The puzzle in the underground area where with the moving weight made it much clearer.
