LD25 — You are the Villain

Subterranean Farm Maniac by jmaasing 2012-12-20T20:13:00

My highscore was 128 starved people, and this game gave a new meaning to "You reap what you sow".

It was really fun to figure out, I wish it wasn't so completely luck-based after you've got the strategy nailed down, but I understand that it needed to be simple to fit in 48 hours. It's nice to see what happens when you try different things, like not intervening at all or trying to stabilize the population to make it go forever (it appears to be impossible).

Besides that, the game could use a bit of polish, like a restart button, in-game instructions, music, etc. I think the graphics were fine, though. The sound effects were nice too, but they seemed to become bugged after the game restarted (the burn sound always played, no matter where you clicked).

Like I said, it was really fun! Great job!

The Furry Fours vs. Goatie the EVIL Goat by sirGustav 2013-01-05T21:49:00

It's kind of lacking in gameplay. All I did was dash continuously in the same direction until the super-dog appeared, and then I had a hard time understanding when it was safe to attack him. I wish there was more to the actual bunny killing, which takes up most of the player's time.

The graphics and sounds were really nice, though. And I like the round world idea.

My Little Terrorist by tomc 2012-12-23T13:53:00

It's cool, but it gets kind of boring because you have to stand around for a lot of time waiting for new jobs to appear. And you have to open and close the job window all the time, since new ones don't show up while it's open and there's often at least one job that you can't take for some reason, so the shadow on the monitor becomes useless. I guess you need an "Ignore" button for the jobs.

Sometimes I was clicking my terrorists but couldn't select them, which is a bit frustrating. I think it only happens when they're moving somewhere automatically, but still.

The rules are a unclear sometimes, like whether of not opening a window will pause the rest of the game or not. It would also be nice to know how much notoriety a job will give you.

It has these little problems, but it's a nice game, I wish there wasn't so much waiting time. The graphics weren't amazing, but they did their job. Good work!

StickThief by Zaxuhe 2012-12-21T21:42:00

It's original, but there's something that doesn't feel right about it. I think it's that I could get used to control an isometric character with the arrows in such short time, plus the delay between each move in a game in which you have to be fast. There's a couple of things I'd like to point out:

- I can't stress this enough: if you game uses a keyboard, SO SHOULD BE MENU. Don't mix them up, it's unprofessional, annoying and a barrier to the player's learning. If the game requires you to click "Start" with the cursor, the first thing the player will try is to move the character with cursor.
- The game should have some instructions.
- Don't make the player return to the menu screen between each level. This is especially bothersome because of the inconsistent input methods I mentioned above.
- The music was sort of annoying, but good job on adding a "mute" option. IMO, sound effects should be prioritized over music, because they have a smaller chance of being irritating, are easier to make and provide feedback rather than being static background.
- You misspelled "Thief" in the title screen :P Remember that you're allowed to fix typos after the deadline.

Good job over all, though I wish the controls didn't feel so sticky. Again, I can't put my finger on how you'd go about fixing this, because the game's design seems fine.

Lumberjack by BrothersT 2012-12-20T20:35:00

Wow, that was awesome I just wish there was some sound, besides that it's pretty, solid and really well designed! And I wish there was more of it, of course =P

Great work!

A Villain Project by tmt_01 2012-12-20T21:47:00

Sounds would've been nice of course, but I liked the graphics, for the most part (the whole thing seemed to move way too fast, but it wasn't ugly).

The big flaw here is really the gameplay. You ALWAYS win by simply not doing anything, and all the humans & goat will walk in to the trap by themselves in a matter of seconds. And everything moves kind of fast... It didn't feel like there was much gameplay at all, even before I discovered the exploit.

A trip along the railroad tracks by Catmoo 2012-12-20T22:42:00

It's really nice, good graphics, good sounds and it's very solid.

The gameplay is kind of repetitive, I wish there was more to it, as there's too much waiting time and what you do move ends up being really automated. But good job, over all!

Planets? Yummy! by Grouflon 2012-12-19T16:15:00

It's a fun concept, but the game is obviously a bit broken, with no clear clear objective (I ended up floating around eating ships while the planet near me seemed to magically lose health). Besides that, you shouldn't use an Arrow-keys + Mouse combination, because they're too close together. WASD would've been a better choice.

Besides that, I found a couple of bugs. The alien sometimes starts on top of a planet, which prevents it from moving, and the game just kind of freezes when you die.

Sound effects would be nice, but I really like the graphics, especially the alien. Instructions would really help as well. Even after reading you submission notes, I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do, or how to fling the enemies away. And from the comments, I'm betting some people didn't understand that you can help yourself pretty easily.

Finally, the game is sort of unbalanced. You start out with 50 shuttles shooting at you and you end with 50 shuttles shooting at you. I wish there was some progression in the difficulty.

It's a good attempt, over all, and there's some good fun to be had with it, it's a shame there's these problems.

Super realistic meteor simulator by rolfeth 2012-12-19T15:41:00

It's fun, but I found it frustrating how the ball blocks most of your view, making it harder to see, especially since it was hard to see even without the ball in front of you. I think I found a bug, where my ball just disappeared after I got hit by something.

The graphics and sound effects were nice, but the music was just annoying. Good job, over all!

Conquer all the castles!! by Ithildin 2012-12-26T20:46:00

I get the idea, but it could be better. The controls aren't very good, because it's awkward to use WASD, J and the mouse all at once, there's no reason not to bind Spawning to a closer key. I don't get why you decided to use the mouse, either. I'm afraid there isn't much gameplay at all, and it's simply not fun. On top of that, there's the issues like the character getting stuck and clicking enemies at a distance.

Not a bad idea, but keep those things in mind next time =)

Escape of the Blob Monster by pl0xz0rz 2012-12-20T19:11:00

I'm not going to lie, this is awfully boring. The only "challenge" is wandering around blindly hoping to run in to more fairies before the clock runs out. Even the blob's motion seems unfun, since it sluggishly floats around. The music was kind of repetitive, but it's better than silence and you did add a mute button, so good job on that, and the grapics were pretty okay.

By the way, I'll remind you that you're allowed to fix typos even after the deadline, so I recommend you change that half-hour clock.

Villingen by monobo 2012-12-21T21:08:00

It's pretty nice, the gameplay is very straightforward, the graphics look good and the sounds are fitting. Unfortunately, it ran kind of slow on my computer for some reason, but it was fun nonetheless. I felt it getting repetitive after the second round, though. It's a shame we can't play it on a touch screen, I feel like it would be more fun. I'd also have opted for a shorter time limit to make the game more addictive.

Good job, over all.

Tetris God by LeCherLich 2012-12-26T20:35:00

It's pretty nice. The graphics and audio were fitting, and it was fun. I just wish the AI wasn't so dumb, but it's amazing how smart it was considering the time constraint.

Villain from Nooblord band by gwozdziu 2012-12-20T21:11:00

It's not a bad idea, but there should have been some actual gameplay to it rather than mostly clicking around at random, like EatenAlive mentioned.

And of course, it's also unpolished and pretty bugged up, but this can be excused for a first timer. I've never used Java, so I can only imagine what problems you ran in to. I guess, be more careful about the design, next time.

Greedy Aardvark by newton64 2012-12-21T20:27:00

It's a cool idea, but this game has some serious issues that made it really really frustrating. When the whole point of the game is to perfect your execution of a level, you have to give the player a way to retry the level. I found myself wanting to restart each level to get a better score, but it automatically went on to the next, and the only way to retry it was to restart the whole damn game. Not only that, but if you get stuck in a level you have to start from Level 1. On top of that, there's the weird and unpredictable movement.

This could have been a decent game, but the not being able to restart made me REALLY frustrated, and I had absolutely no fun playing this. It may seem like a tiny flaw, but the impact it makes is enormous.

Like I said, it was a cool idea, the graphics and sounds were nicely fitting and the execution was mostly good; but that single flaw of the level selection completely ruined it, at least for me.

Remember: if there's a best score to be beaten, make sure the player can quickly and easily retry a level.

A Villain is YOU! by tSwitch 2012-12-18T13:04:00

It was fun and solid. What it's really lacking is in-game instructions. I also thought it was a bit easy, even on the Hard difficulty, but I noticed the towers didn't always fire, so maybe there's was some sort of bug?

Plebs vs. Mobs by Kurt 2012-12-20T23:07:00

This was way too confusing, I could barely play it. There's a whole lot of reasons for this; there's a whole lot of dudes running around and you can't figure out who's what, there's more than one house, there's little indication of whether you're attacking or not, you're not told what the items are for and there are empty slots, there's a gold counter but no shop... At one point the health bar of the house disappeared and I was even more confused (was it a bug?).

It's not necessarily terrible for a game to be confusing, but in this case I simply didn't have fun with it. The graphics and the sounds were nice, though.

The Thief by delpes 2012-12-20T23:28:00

I really like it! It's a lot of fun, pretty to look at and generally solid. There's a couple of specific things I'd like to point how, though:

- The woman's screaming sound is way too loud and becomes annoying.
- In the last level, I robbed every single person I came across and still didn't have enough money at the end. On my third try I won, but you should be careful not to have the level be impossible.
- If your game uses the keyboard, then so should the menu.
- I saw people walking around outside of the level, which looked a tad weird, but I'm just nitpicking at this point.

I had a lot of fun with it! The game could definitely be expanded with more mechanics post-comp, but I'm glad you didn't add any more levels, as it would become pretty boring soon enough. Great job!

Earthmination by Dreauw 2012-12-18T13:31:00

It was fun, but it got repetitive. After a short while I had all the upgrades maxed out and more gold than I could spend, and the bosses are really easy to break once you have the vertical shots, by standing in one of the right-side corners of the screen where they can't hit you.

The regular segments were a bit more challenging, but I wish there were some more mechanics to it. The sounds and art were pretty good!
