LD22 — Alone

Sat-E by treeman 2011-12-27T15:36:00

Excellent little game. I've been thinking of making my own little pixel-sized game recently (like Knytt Stories), as well as those finnicky keyboard controls. Seems you scratched that itch.

Excellent balance of risk and exploration, as well as the two trade items -- you need "junk" (was it junk?) to make the friend, but you need cash (was it cash?) to get the teleporter (which is increasingly useful in the endgame).

Now I have to go back to buy myself a beer helmet and see what that's all about. Also: the purple pods? What were those?

Very good job. One of the top games of this LD48 for me.

Oases by newton64 2011-12-20T20:47:00

Oh wow, sorry folks, didn't see the comments at first.

As for the not working: yeah, I'm getting that a lot. I have a feeling the version of MSVCR100.dll I included isn't really all that general-purpose; nor is the WiFi code I stole (I included the URL!) to list the wireless SSIDs.

I can only assure you that I'm working on a fix. Networking is not my strong point, so I hope you'll be patient.

iFred_QC: The sounds were mostly taken from freesound.org. If you check in the credits.txt file, I list the attributions for most. The news[1-4].ogg files are mixes of two sound files each, with news4.ogg including my own sexy, sexy radio voice.

Per: Thanks for the info about the .dll, I'll see if I can find the proper one to distribute with the game! Or I can just link to the distributable. Also: You're seeing the game exactly as it should be. There's no input via the mouse and keyboard, per se...

Oases by newton64 2011-12-30T23:11:00

@Mjiig As a matter of fact, the intent was to actually make people take their laptops outdoors and sort of...wander the city in search of an oasis (ha!) of zero-wifi availability. Not entirely practical, of course...I felt a bit odd wandering around Montreal at night with my laptop out looking for spots...

Anyway, that's why there's actual code to check if someone has turned off their wireless adapter (although the code unfortunately gives false positives on some systems): it forces people to actually go outside.

Cat Match by Mitchell 2011-12-19T04:57:00

Would be cool if -- for instance -- you could just drag across two adjacent cats to have them disappear, instead of clicking each one individually. Nice concept; are there any algorithms to guarantee that each level is "solve-able," or is it completely random? (Also: kittens!)

Really excellent work. I was pleasantly surprised at how...futuristic the computers seem to work. Cool HUD bro.

Super Smash Lander Suicide Party, Bro? by Black Ships Fill the Sky 2011-12-19T05:58:00

It's what I'm seeing too.

Super Smash Lander Suicide Party, Bro? by Black Ships Fill the Sky 2011-12-19T05:58:00

Which is a shame because it sounds brilliant.

Bomb Defuse by Kaphonaits 2011-12-25T16:34:00

SOUNDTRACK OF THE YEAR. NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR TE TE TE TE TE TE.

Station 7 by quadtree 2011-12-19T14:25:00

Found a small glitch right after blowing up all the barrels -- if you walk off to the left of the subsequent platform, you can sort of...wander off into the Minus World ;)

Not a dealbreaker by any means though. ++for building and controlling a robot!

Leave me alone by ghostonline 2011-12-19T15:06:00

Just a quick suggestion: perhaps have the links between Singing Smileys fade away instead of turning blue when they've been blocked off? They can be fairly distracting, even when they're no longer "active" but still bright blue.

Still, challenging and enjoyable game!

A Rift in Space by Erik McClure 2011-12-19T15:25:00

Okay, some genuinely terrifying moments in there. Well played.

Were there plans to have more in the way of breakables/enemies or some such? I basically didn't shoot at all in the end.

Incomitat by Hempuli 2011-12-19T22:49:00

Controls very nicely, sprites are consistent and stick to a cool style. Very impressive for a 48-hour game!

Alone in the Ark by PaulWagener 2011-12-19T14:44:00

"Without your space helmet, Dave, you're going to find that rather difficult." I have serious scientific issues with certain events in Act III of the story! ;)

Top marks. Really great use of Unity and some excellent humour thrown in.

I Need Someone by Tony Coculuzzi 2011-12-29T00:51:00

Nice game with (obviously) a beautiful art style. Note that after collecting the heart, I could still go back and "collect" the other components again.

Polished content all around. Very much enjoyed seeing that red glow around the corner while heading out for the heart. Very nice use of colour.

LD25 — You are the Villain

Office Mischief by ThemsAllTook 2012-12-20T14:32:00

Love love love the art style, though at first I couldn't figure out where the garbage was. I kept trying to feed the sandwich to plants. Plants love sandwiches, right?

That coffee sound is going to haunt my nightmares though. I also liked walking up to a full pot and scorching my innards by downing the whole thing in one go.

You should totally have an Employee Washroom DLC where you take all the toilet paper rolls and flip them in a direction everyone hates.

Asteroids Backwards by CurtisOfTheDark 2012-12-18T05:02:00

Sounds like a pretty cool concept. Would it have run on a tablet, or is it mouse-driven? Anyway, keep at the LD's -- they're an insanely good learning experience.

Firepower! by cwilloughby 2012-12-17T05:50:00

Really like the look of this one, and the growing unease as things spiral out of your control.

Notoriety by TheMelon 2012-12-18T05:24:00

Really nifty little game; with some UI polish it could really get going.
* Health usually counts down; you could make that bar a Damage bar, which would naturally make you blow up when full.
* I like how New York and Paris are cities, as well as California ;) (maybe San Francisco could work).
* I wasn't fully clear what money was used for at first; I know the info's right there, but it didn't grab my attention at first; again, some UI tweaks there.
* Also, feedback on how cities will/won't react to your threats could be cool (a la Civ), but that's just a bonus.

Greedy Aardvark by newton64 2012-12-17T03:28:00

OBVIOUSLY

Greedy Aardvark by newton64 2012-12-17T04:01:00

Yeah, it's just based on the like... 1.5 seconds of footage I could make out in the video I linked. It seems to arbitrarily jump from wherever on the Y-axis to the top of the next line over, which is super weird and I may have to write a confused letter to Kevin Gillis, creator of the show.

And the blue shift-by-one blocks are only there for laughs and giggles.

Greedy Aardvark by newton64 2012-12-18T03:31:00

Thanks for playing anyhow! And doubly so for noticing the audio. It's more of a personal project, I now realise, but I figured it fit the theme nicely enough.
