LD23 — Tiny World

Disregard All Humans by Fireblend 2012-05-01T23:06:00

53850pts

I have been wanting to play this game for a while, but only had time to play it now.

The gameplay is very fun and eating humans is satisfying. Music is very good too! I think you could improve the art a little bit. Awesome game overall!

Free Donutia by the8donut 2012-04-25T16:07:00

I love the main character design. I played it carelessly because I had plenty of HP, but by the end of the game HP is something REALLY precious. I'd suggest perhaps adding a way of recovering HP, or maybe a way of making the player learn that he should be very careful with his HP. I couldn't finish it, though I think I'd be able to in a second run.

Planet ZOOB by Pacifist Games 2012-05-07T09:10:00

Aaaw, 87. Will try for a better score later. It sucks how I usually die accidentally trying to shoot a meteor from a short distance and not because I was trapped.

This is one of the games I found the most fun so far. Congratulations!

Planet ZOOB by Pacifist Games 2012-05-13T00:09:00

189! I'm addicted to your game D=

WTF World by Misfit 2012-04-26T17:18:00

I like the pallete and the controls, very innovative!

The humor was also great!

Title screen was my favorite one so far, very retro and beautifully-designed.

WTF World by Misfit 2012-04-26T17:18:00

Oh, forgot to say but I loved the music too.

Asylum by Orni 2012-04-27T14:20:00

Wow, easy 5/5 in the mood even without sound! This game is very inspiring. I liked your take on the theme a lot. The camera made me feel paranoid like the character right in the first room of the game. Awesome game, one of my favorites so far! Please make a version with sound someday =)

The graphics are also insanely good. In the platforming part I think I think the controls broke a little bit the atmosphere (because some ledges are too high above the ground and you have to hold the jump key to climb them, which makes the character jump again right when he steps on it, made it look like a bug which broke the immersion a little bit) but that's a very small detail. Apart from that, everything was perfect for me!

Microbial by LukeRissacher 2012-04-24T11:35:00

I can't play the game, even after downloading the redist. Help?

Microbial by LukeRissacher 2012-04-25T08:16:00

Hey, I tried the new version and it worked! The game is amazing! There are some really cool level designs, though at the game's first stages it looked like the game would be very simple. I liked how new mechanics just kept adding and adding.

The level names were really funny, especially level 15 and the levels at the Arbitrary Mood Change part.

A boss fight in the end was really unexpected and fun. The second to last level was too hard in my opinion, as well as the "relay" one, but all others were well-paced.

My favorite level design of all was Lilly Pads and Piranas. reeeeeeally well crafted!

Congratulations on the game!

Pow! Pow! Pow! by Cake&Code 2012-04-24T07:59:00

I found it kind of boring to wait for the stuff to grow to the right size to use them as jump. I like the art style and the game name a lot XD

Tiny Shards by Gabriel 2012-04-26T05:55:00

This game is one of my favorite games so far. I wish I had made it, lol. It feels like a full game, and not the product of a 72-hour jam. Music is very good (even though you guys didn't make it), graphics are AMAZING, level design is great, with good enemy placement, and even though people complained about the combat system I found the mechanics and enemy behavious pretty consistent for a jam. Just found a few enemies kind of hard to defeat (like the carnivorous plant and the jumping slime). The enemy variety was incredible too.

I believe most players will find the second Hard Day too hard. A checkpoint in it could be nice, even if the rest of the game doesn't have this sort of thing...

I should also say that the story seems to be fantastic (my game crashed near the end of the second Harday, but maybe it was my computer's fault, it was running pretty well until then =/). I'll play it all over again so I can see the ending next time. I found the 4-days a week idea great, and also loved the names for each day =)

BTW, there's still a sentence in portuguese in the game when you check the bed, though you guys have probably already noticed it.

Oh, and speaking of that, loved the retro-style dialog boxes. Remind me of pokemon.

Congratulations!

Tiny Shards by Gabriel 2012-05-07T01:07:00

Haha I finally played it to the end, I must say I didn't realize what the game was actually about in my first attempt a couple of weeks ago, but not I see it was pretty obvious from the start. My only complaint is still that the game is too difficult - Enemies like the skull and the slime could have less HP, and health pickups would help a lot too.

Anyway, congrats again on the game, very nice idea and well implemented. The ending was quite simple, but well, I couldn't expect a cutscene in a 72-hour jam game, right? XD

Nineties Holywood Hacker by Casino Jack 2012-05-12T16:16:00

Yes, what happened to Tomalla happened to me too, in the second level.

Though I must say, the concept is brilliant. 5/5 innovation for sure.

This would be an incredibly awesome game if the gameplay itself was more dynamic. I had more fun in the "puzzle" part and speculating how my experience would be than actually playing the action part, which was slow and became boring very quickly.

you definitely should work more on this and make a full game out of it, it has a lot (and I mean A LOT) of potential.

Congrats!

Dangerous Baby World by leodigaum 2012-04-26T04:28:00

Funniest game name so far XD I love the concept art. But I found the game too hard, even after reading the tips D=

Don't Leave our Home! by EdiiKnorand 2012-04-28T06:45:00

Good concept, would have worked wonders in a longer, more balanced game. Maybe if the enemies didn't aim for the planet while it's abandoned it would be a little bit easier?

TINY COMPUTER PEOPLE by Tuba 2012-04-26T06:59:00

F***ING MAGNETS- I mean, computers.

I lol'd at the "playing zork" one.

Great concept! Funniest game I've played so far XD also, Settlers feelings are always welcome.

Tinysasters by Volute 2012-05-02T01:47:00

Though I loved the overall looks and polish, I found the gameplay hard to understand, since there's a lot of information and a lot of pressure to make decisions quickly.

A Bathtub Story by ehtd 2012-05-07T04:23:00

Very fun and beautiful. Could be a little easier because at some points it's prerry much impossible to avoid enemy fire.

The last level was funny, but I couldn't get there normally =/

My score: 4846

Soul Searchin' by MaximSchoemaker 2012-04-28T06:28:00

Oh wow!!! This was incredible!!!! Too bad that from the screenshots alone the game doesn't seem so beautiful and innovative. I loved the text and the story (and the hat). I wonder how the hell did you program that.

Skydef by FrederickK 2012-04-24T03:48:00

It was fun but it took me a while to understand how to make the whale stop rising... In the new version of the game, though, it was way better to understand.

When Worlds Collide by AlwaysGeeky 2012-04-28T07:24:00

Very beautiful game! I couldn't destroy the planet though, found it too hard! (or maybe I didn't know how to make good use of the powers?)

Fusion Time! by NeiloGD 2012-04-28T08:27:00

Good game! It sounded simple in the "how to play" text, but it took me a few matches to fully understand the mechanics.

The Traveler by Thotor 2012-05-14T00:09:00

Played through the game twice, didn't find the ssecret level =/

Very nice game! the concept is very creative and fitting to the theme and level design is clever. The character's movement was a little awkward, but nothing that ruined the gameplay.

A longer version of this with more levels and features would be great!

Bioclash by gammabeam 2012-04-26T02:01:00

423 on my second try. I found it quite fun, also, background graphics and animations were very good. I do wonder, though, what's the best strategy so far? The game is really hard, sometimes I get mad at the antibody-thingy for moving so slowly, and the "speed" upgrade doesn't really make much of a change =/

Too bad it doesn't have sound, with so many stuff happening in the same time it would give the game a really satisfying feeling!

Polarity by nornagon 2012-05-08T04:40:00

Really good game! Nice level designs from the start to the end of the game!

Recluse by chambers 2012-04-23T06:30:00

I'm glad you enjoyed it, I'm still a little bit worried that the game might not work well in all OSs because of how Java deals with certain things of the this game's mechanics =/

Recluse by chambers 2012-04-24T01:54:00

lanzz: I'm really sorry you couldn't play the game. Thank you for testing and posting the

error message. I'll work as hard as I can to find a solution for that, probably with the

help of friends, but I can't guarantee I will find the answer (I don't have much

experience in programming). I still have to check if it works on Linux. Meanwhile, please try playing the windows version in some other computer if you can.

porath: Wow, that never happened to anyone before. I wonder what happened? I'll look into

it, but it could be that you pressed the jump button too fast while trying to get out. Remember that the second jump is very short comparing to the first one, and it is of no use if you do it before the appex of the first jump. If that was what happened to you, I'll make the pit more shallow in the nect version.

All the others: Thanks for the compliments! I hope you guys had fun, despite how hard it was to figure out the start (It was supposed to be part of the experience). But you all managed to escape the recluse life, even when it seemed impossible. Congratulations! XD

Recluse by chambers 2012-04-28T05:37:00

Thanks everyone for the comments! Back when I was developing the game, I would never guess people would like it so much. I'll work on a revamped version taking into consideration all feeback you guys gave me (and sound). Unfortunately, the snail's speed is slow because of a bug (if the max speed was one pixel faster, the snail would go through some walls), but I'll see what I can do to fix it.

Recluse by chambers 2012-05-15T07:33:00

Guys, thanks a lot for all the feedback and comments. Every single comment in this page made me feel that making the game was more than worth it.

Also, thanks a bunch for the ratings, getting first place in innovation was a real achievement!

I've been really busy with college stuff but I will release a version with fixed bugs and better difficulty as soon as I can.

Recluse by chambers 2012-07-31T06:08:00

@tokanite

I'm sorry, I don't have a mac (those instructions are automatically generated when I create the file) but according to what I found on Google, the path to the desktop should be something like cd/users/your name/desktop ("cd" is the command that sets the directory you're at). Then you type in "chmod +x Recluse.app/Contents/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub".

After doing that, you can exit the Terminal and click on the file normally.

But I should tell you, I will release a new version of Recluse (with new features and corrected bugs) tomorrow night, so if you can wait, it will be a much better experience for you!

Nasty Bubbly - 72 Hour JAM Entry by ApiO 2012-04-27T22:45:00

Very fun!

There is a Picture by MortisGhost 2012-05-02T04:39:00

Too bad it's a jam, if it was a competition it would probably win the "mood" category. I love the earthbound style, sounds are the best I've seen in a LD game. Unfortunately I didn't get the ending. The graphics style is really innovative and dialogues are beautiful and very fitting to the mood. Congratulations!

Microscopia by azurenimbus 2012-05-07T01:17:00

"Awesome."

Too bad so many people already made this very same comment =(

Little Biyubi by edbadiux 2012-04-25T05:39:00

Excellent music, ABSURDLY AWESOME GRAPHICS, but the collision with the spikes is too harsh!

I'd definitely pay to play a game like that if you guys made something more complex out of it.

Drill It!: Demolition Co. by Julian Spillane 2012-04-24T09:26:00

At first I found the controls confusing, but once I got the hang of them, I found the game really fun. Words can't describe how funny the game and your description text are.

Also, graphics and music were great.

The only problem was, I found the bomb completely useless.

Space Dozer by desmarkie 2012-05-14T00:51:00

Wow, this game was absurdly beautiful and fun. I wish I had found it earlier!

Tinytanic by maartenwiedenhof 2012-05-12T19:56:00

What an awesome game idea... funny and well-done mood. The switch between game modes. It could have been one of the best 48-hour game I had ever seen if the gameplay wasn't so confusing =/ Is there any way to know how much HP I still have?

Also, the starting menu was a little confusing at first because I didn't see the buttons... Then, I found them, clicked on "start game" and tried to figure out what to do because I didn't see that more buttons popped up on the other side of the screen.

Tinytanic by maartenwiedenhof 2012-05-12T19:57:00

The switch between game modes is always hilarious when it happens*

Galaxy Music Quest by Folaks 2012-05-07T07:26:00

I'm glad you were quite forgiving with the amount of extra lives, unlike I was =/ I didn't find the game difficult, but in some stages there could be more holes to get outside the planet.

Fracuum by TylerGlaiel 2012-04-27T15:10:00

very well-polished! (not to mention fun and innovative!) And wow... You're he creator of Closure! awesome. Actually I liked this better than the original flash closure =P

Kudos! A strong candidate to become my favorite this LD.

Predicament by orangepascal 2012-04-26T20:52:00

I really like the game, the mood and the artstyle. Very well polished. But I've been playing it for a long time and I'm stuck. People have been praising the ending and I'd like to see it though, before I can rate it =/ any tips? I don't know what to do with the [SPOILERS] Parachute and bat glider [/SPOILERS]

Predicament by orangepascal 2012-05-01T20:59:00

Finally got to finish it, the ending was unexpected and funny!

Planet Trot by Logan 2012-04-26T06:04:00

Best graphics. In a videogame. Ever.

Tiny Worlds by Lidfrid 2012-04-26T20:21:00

One of my favorite games, but needs more balancing, I found it too hard! I like the mechanic, from the screenshots and description I was expecting something like Orbital but it's surprisingly different! Kudos!

Game With a Fantastic Title by batzerk 2012-05-07T05:00:00

Wow, this game is incredible, very fun to play and it's very satisfying to listen to the completed songs. It certainly deserves more comments and ratings. Too bad it has no challenge. Maybe if the planet grew and you had to step on the platforms before they sank into the land? Or maybe adding some other kind of time limit or hazards? I dunno.

Anyway, congrats for the game and thanks for the amazing experience.

Kumiho by Christina Antoinette Neofotistou 2012-05-04T22:22:00

Very good game! I'm a big fan of danmaku shooters and I'm impressed with the attack pattern designs, it matched the mechanics pretty well!

As for the feedback, I think there should be an indication for when enemies spawn from the bottom so the player won't be exactly at the wrong spot when they do.

Also, I disliked having to release the attack key and press it again every time I died.

May I add, the boss fight pattern was awesome too! Made good use of the teleportation abality. I loved the graphics and the music too. I'd definitely want to see more of that! Congratulations on your game!

Oh Boy, Oh Boy by Digitalis 2012-05-04T23:39:00

I like the core mechanic a lot and the graphics are amazing. I'm not sure if I did everything there is to do, though.

Planet Life by Sos 2012-05-04T23:29:00

Amazing concept, kind of difficult to find out how to play in the start. It kept me wondering what the ending meant. Did Jake get crazy because of loneliness? lol

Pocket Planet by MoltenMustafa 2012-05-02T07:11:00

I loved the concept so much I wish I had made this game! =(

Too bad it runs too slow in my computer, so I won't be able to rate it in most categories.

Different music for each area was great. The game feels like a mini-castlevania!

ANtopia by pgil 2012-04-28T06:02:00

Awesome pallete and background graphics, music and sound effects were good and very fitting to the game style!

I loved the explosion animations and also how the keyholes worked!

I'm not sure if I understood what happened at the ending, but it I did, then the ending was awesome XD

Catamari Meowacy by SethR 2012-05-07T04:34:00

Dude... I'm gonna have nightmares with that face for a long time.

Loved the game despite that =P

Catamari Meowacy by SethR 2012-05-07T04:37:00

Sorry GLaDOS, you're not the most memorable/omnipresent villain in the history of videogames anymore.

Worlds in Cards by summaky 2012-05-14T00:19:00

Even though it's very short, certainly deserves a 5/5 overall and fun. Very well-polished!

Nook by PoV 2012-04-28T07:14:00

I played the game twice so I could get the stars I missed during the start of the game.

The game is very polished and the graphics and sound are AMAZING. Of course, there already exist many games where the main character can shrink, but this was done in such a solid way in this game that I have to take off my hat to you guys.

I'll set as an objective for myself to make a tileset as beautiful as yours someday.

In my opinion, you guys should use this to make a bigger game, with more stages and sceneries, and perhaps new mechanics like enemies and hazards, and release it as an indie game. What you've got there is already very solid and I'd definitely pay to play a long version of this with many levels!

T in Y World by Tom 7 2012-05-04T08:07:00

Wow, I... I don't even have words to describe:
-how awesome this game is
-how awesome my experience was
-how the soundtrack overall is awesome
-how difficult it is to play this game and understand it.
-how amazed I am that, so far, no one complained about how difficult it is to understand how the rules work, considering not all of us are programmers.

I love the concept overall. And even more than the concept, how much content you actually included in the game and how the rules were presented. I think you could have made it easier for everyone to understand the rules through more extensive and friendly tutorials, but I guess it's part of the planned experience to make it all absurdly confusing.

Congratulations and thanks for this inspiring game.

stack::tracer() by nihilocrat 2012-05-07T05:31:00

It's a shame that the game is so short, you obviously ran out of time to implement more levels, but please make something bigger out of this, it has great potential, especially seeing how you can create more and more layers if you have enough shapes, some sweet strategies might emerge from these mechanics in more complex levels.

Other than that, really nice graphics too, although there should be a better way of visualizing the position of stuff, the player's shadow is not enough...

Congrats!

The Elves end the Shoemaker by Nora Shishi 2012-04-24T07:51:00

I loved it. It's indeed a very simple game, but I see nothing wrong with that. Needless to say, reminds me of street fighter II. The graphic style, animation and sound are very coherent!

Atom Planet by NMcCoy 2012-05-04T07:18:00

Wow, this is likely to be my favorite game of all, very nice concept and very well polished, though in order to be fun it really needed the walkthrough. My only criticism is that most transformations aren't very obvious - but I guess trial & error gameplay was what you were going for. Thanks for this amazing game and thanks for the walthrough! I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight if I hadn't finished the game.

Aether by Danik 2012-05-04T07:25:00

Very good game, right at the start of the game I died and the text in the game over screen built up the whole mood for me, and gave me motivation XD I liked the concept!

MakHappy by JosephGribbin 2012-05-02T06:01:00

Very funny game, I loved the needle guy above all, lol.

The mechanic reminds me of Mario's Time Machine, an educational Mario game. BTW, was that him in steering the worlds? lol

MakHappy by JosephGribbin 2012-05-02T06:03:00

Oh, almost forgot, I think only one action button would be enough (for picking up and dropping items, depending if your have something in your hands or not)

I Heart Ludum Dare by Kayamon 2012-05-02T03:04:00

What an incredibly well-done metaphor, congratulations!
Too bad the game is quite difficult since you can't recover your health (pretty much the same complaint people gave my game) but the ending was worth it!

I love ludum dare too!

TINY WORlDS by machinas 2012-05-12T15:54:00

I think this has huge chances of winning the "fun" category, too bad it doesn't have so many views. This is incredibly addictive, even though English is not my native language. Very creative! Congrats!

Biodome by 7Soul 2012-04-26T02:29:00

Best music ever. Not to mention the art and character design. I find it interesting how the girl is the strong one, and the man is the agile one (unlike most videogames). I wish I could get to see the 3rd character but couldn't pass the sewer stage with many metal gates (I think the second stage with sewer pipes) I'll definitely try and play it again later though >_<

Memento XII by deepnight 2012-04-25T04:24:00

Great game! The ending was very original, though the lack of information about their past was kind of unsatisfying (unless I missed something/didn't understand the story. But I really liked the idea behind what's happening!

Planet Waves by attagcatc 2012-04-25T06:28:00

An interesting approach for the theme "tiny world", lol. If there was a prize for "tiniest planet", this would win for sure XD

Tiny Maze by Fififox 2012-05-01T23:11:00

I was scared a screaming face would show up at any time, lol

Tiny Maze by Fififox 2012-05-01T23:14:00

BTW, I'd personally prefer if white represented the passable tiles and greay represented the walls instead of the opposite, this made me confused by the start of the game.

Brevity by thristhart 2012-04-28T06:04:00

I found it kind of confusing, but I'm not so much used to strategy games. The phase programming was neat though!

Hamster Damn by Valandre 2012-05-02T02:47:00

Good idea, most people made a game that takes place AROUND a tiny round planet, and not INSIDE of it. But I think the level was too random, maybe the same concept would have worked better with level-to-level gameplay taking place inside a single 360-degree planet that doesn't change when you go full-circle, instead of "infinite" gameplay with a single level.

Congrats for your game! I also didn't find out what I had to actually do the first time I tried, but then I read the instructions once again and got the hang of it!

Hamster Bowling by tfendall 2012-05-02T02:23:00

I wish I could rate 6 stars for so many categories...

I'm really impressed, congratulations!

ANT SURF HERO: THE SURFENING by JigxorAndy 2012-05-02T00:44:00

Yay, I got all the stars! Possibly the funniest game so far, the ending is creative too. Great animations and sound. I also liked the good variety in the level design, and change of mood when you got inside the enemy base.

The only problem was that the ant didn't make much difference in the game, except for setting up the theme. Also, I didn't get what was the downside of dying, since you don't even lose score, apparently.

Besides that, there's not much to say, the game was really fun and enjoyable until the very end. Congrats!

Scape by intmain 2012-04-25T04:38:00

At first I was "OK", then I got to world 6 and the fertile soil mechanic came in. And I shat bricks.

Then on world 8 and 9 I saw the fertile soil mechanics could be used together in very clever ways. The last levels with the red trees are also quite challenging.

I just found the first levels a little repetitive. Except for that, really entertaining!

My Little Planetoid by matthias_zarzecki 2012-04-25T16:25:00

That was actually pretty fun! Though I had to play it twice, in my first playthrough I died right at the start and didn't find the game that fun. I felt that the buildings at the start of the game weren't very well characterized. For example: why is the farm grey?

Luckily in my second attempt I was able to finish it. The planet gets really beautiful by the end of the game, with all those sattelites revolving around it.

Anyway, good work!

Audio Land by triplefox 2012-05-14T00:58:00

Fun to play around, but I'm not sure if I was able to use it to its full potential. Maybe adding a beginner's tutorial with examples of cool stuff you can do with it would help a lot =)

A Load of Bulls... by Frib 2012-05-06T00:55:00

I think it needs more feedback whether the bullets are hitting the enemies or not, and also when your character takes damage. Also, when you kill the enemies they just disappear with no sound feedback, so you can't tell if they ran away or if you kill them.

Anyway, you did very well with the graphics! Congrats on doing that in 48 hours! The game is hard as hell, but at least you can climb the house to feel safer =P

Obsolescence by quickfingers 2012-05-07T06:07:00

Impressive graphics, was this really made in 24 hours and not in 48? It is incredibly beautiful and polished. Awesome mood and message too, probably the most meaningful game I've seen in the competition so far.

There's a big balancing issue in my opinion though, I gave up playing after 14000 years survived, because I felt I would never die unless I wanted to. The difficulty progression should be way, way steeper.

I think the game mechanic is fun by itself. If it was a way harder game, making the play attempts short and motivating people to play it more than one time to get high scores, it could be a perfect game.

But as I said before, this is an amazingly beautiful entry with a very strong message, congratulations!

Faelanx by arkeus 2012-04-24T10:26:00

This game is amazing. Even though it has a lot of content, it's very well-balanced (though I didn't use many weapons besides the main one and the plasma, I didn't find any balance isssues in the level-up system or difficulty progression). It was very risky from the start of the competition to make such a complex game, it's really impressive that it was made by a single person.

The only thing is, how exactly doest the game match the "Tiny World" theme? I'm sorry to say this, but I wouldn't be surprised if some people suspect you made this game for another competition or something.

Stellar Nurse by Bleck 2012-04-26T06:20:00

Great game name, great mechanics, great concept.

But I played the game for a very long time and didn't see any sign of a way of losing. How does the game end?? >_<

Stellar Nurse by Bleck 2012-04-26T06:21:00

Also, I think this was my first all 5-stars rating so far, and I'm very picky, lol

THE TINY PIRATE KNOWS MAGIC by uuav 2012-04-26T17:04:00

I actually laughed out loud in the ending, and for quite a while. Very original art style!

Cloud Realm by Hempuli 2012-05-02T01:37:00

It took me a while to figure out the controls, especially since there isn't much feedback of whether you're rising or going down. But when you get the hang of it, controlling the character becomees really satisfying!

I like the pixel art a lot!

Nano Spin by bitbof 2012-05-13T01:02:00

I enjoyed the game a lot, the rules are very well explained and you learn them by yourself, with no need for tutorials. There's also some emergent gameplay; what you first learned as an action that let you transverse gaps is eventually used as a solution to aligning your character and moving in right angles. The last level was pretty hard and I probably wouldn't have found the exit if I hadn't read your comment in response to KevinZuhn and tequibo.

Anyway, congrats on the game, really original and fun!

Short Life in a Box by tequibo 2012-05-02T02:12:00

I liked the simple art style a lot. I wish the game was a little longer though, suddenly there was nothing new to explore in the game world, except for finding the 6th secret (which I tried hard but couldn't do). But that's alright for a 48-hour game, I guess =P Anyway, I had fun!

The Tiny World of Fiorella by strega 2012-04-25T05:48:00

This game is fantastic. Among my favorite entries so far. Too bad it's too similar to Zelda/BoI. I love the graphics and music... also, very well polished!

Niña Nueve by Jonathan Whiting 2012-04-29T01:42:00

Very good game, the graphics are excellent and though it took me a while to understand what was going on, it was very satisfying to learn it by myself. I found the graphics awesome and consistent. I loved the credits and the fact that that you included bosses (not only one, but 3!) More than one piece of music also helped a lot setting the mood, though both of them were kinda repetitive. Most of the game is quite linear and doesn't require going back and forth, but I wouldn't change that since it's good to make our brains rest for a while =P

HMS Imahara by SLiV 2012-05-07T05:15:00

Very hard, could only save Brandon and Anna. Very nice mood, had me desperate while I was playing, a nice atmospheric sound would have reinforced it a lot in my opinion (not necessarily a background music. Check for example the entry "There is a Picture") I found the game really fun and if your goal was to deliver a suspenseful, thrilling experience, then you did it right.

Astro Break by hulahulahest 2012-04-27T14:30:00

I wish I could vote 6 for overall and fun.

It's the exact kind of game I always wanted to make: simple but refined, and all gameplay mechanics fit very well together.

Astro Break by hulahulahest 2012-05-12T16:22:00

Dude, this is still one of my favorite games. I just came back to say I'd probably make the overheat feature less harsh (perhaps doubling the bar's capacity?) and besides that I wouldn't change a thing.

Pale Blue Dot by KevinWorkman 2012-05-14T00:43:00

It took me a while to figure out how the controls worked, but it was fun nonetheless =P

I loved the idea of using spoken narrative to set up the mood. I have a criticism about that though, parts of the game are funny (I lol'd at the title, ending and game over screens) while the main gameplay part has a dense, serious mood. I found that kind of inconsistent, the game could have easily been one of my favorites in the "mood" category due to the audio, but the fact that you chose to use a lot of jokes made the otherwise beautiful mood less intense.

Anyways, congrats on your game, I had a good time collecting other planets =)

Downsize by Jwatt 2012-05-05T21:26:00

Fun game, loved the graphics and the sound. A more moderate difficulty curve would make the game more fun, as Julian Spillane said. I die by accident too frequently though, so I think it'd be better if the game didn't let me move to an empty tile at all, instead of killing me...

I couldn't pass the second bomb stage no matter how much I tried >_<

Inside My Radio by TurboDindon 2012-05-01T22:57:00

The last stage was really hard XD

There was also a bug in which, after clearing a stage, the music stopped and didn't come back (it was the stage right before the hall with electric blue things), making it impossible to proceed, so I had to start all over again.

This game is awesome, very neat idea and great polish. Doesn't look like a game made in 48 hours at all!

I did wish for more stages when I finished it though =P

ONLY DUST by kato9 2012-04-28T05:45:00

The story was quite good and surprising, and graphics are awesome. Even though I loved the music, in some parts of the game I felt it didn't fit the mood very well (example: when the acid is rising)

Nice game! I didn't mind having to find out which parts of the stage were passable and which weren't. In my opinion that was part of the fun =P

Mayor vs Aliens by Sheepolution 2012-04-28T08:20:00

This is a very neat gameplay idea and the story was funny. I like the music a lot too! It's amazing you made more than one piece of music!

A few issues that emerged from the mechanics the way they're implemented right now were:

-Is the special attack any useful at all considering the enemies' behaviour?
-The end of the game tends to become a small piece of vertical land tiles. You can simply keep bouncing on top of the aliens that try to steal them forever; I gave up doing that after 5000pts.

Apart from that, gameplay is fun and I felt the player can always improve his abilities and try again, which is great for an endless game.

Also, I think I'd prefer if using the shotgun killed all enemies within the line of shooting, instead of only affecting a small area, but this is only my personal opinion =P

Good idea to include an online highscore chart!

Kudos!

A Super Mario Summary by johanp 2012-04-26T21:13:00

Kudos for making something that at first glance is not very original into a completely new game! I also like how much replay value you put into it, using the coins and the flags pole. I didn't like some things like the timing required to bounce off enemies and springs. Apart from that, great game!

Apocalypse Inc. by mooosh 2012-05-02T06:21:00

Score: 1602

Played both versions of it, the game is amazing, yet very difficult. It really inspires me to do something more original with the art style next time. I found the mechanics good and loved building stuff, but I didn't realize there was a score in the first playthroughs, so I wasn't much sure of what the goal of the game was. Then I realized it was infinite play (right?)

Sending townspeople into the rocket was very satisfying! Especially when I could fill the 20-person limit =)

Congrats!

Fish Simulator X by bcdefg123 2012-05-02T06:33:00

1690 pts. Good music! Sets a very thrilling mood.

Oddly enough, I couldn't help bursting some bubbles from the volcano, even though I know they do nothing =)

The game is fun but since it doesn't have much innovation in the core concept, you could enrich the gameplay by including other kinds of enemy fish behaviours, or maybe raising the frequency in which new fish appear.

Also, kudos for having Bernkastel as your avatar =P

Planet Run by minism 2012-04-24T10:33:00

How do I go through the first level with a gap between 2 planets? his jumps are too short to reach the other planet!

caveman defending his cave from aliens while monoliths drop down from the sky by bms 2012-04-25T04:47:00

This game is freaking awesome. I love the idea, and I love how the monoliths give you new weapons XD I liked the graphics a lot too.

SUPER SPACE MINER by Cosine 2012-05-02T00:25:00

Quite addictive! The game is very short, but for a longer game with more puzzles I'd considering including an easy way of understanding how many horizontal tiles the planet has, instead of moving the mouse around, because this number changes depending on the puzzle.

Besides that, very fun puzzle game! Congrats! If you're thinking of making a longer version of it, consider adding new terrain types and other kinds of tools!

Extensionism by eelfroth 2012-05-12T15:37:00

Wow... the graphics were genius. I loved the noise effect and the tilted screen. Unfortunately I couldn't pass the stage that apparently had one single glowing box instead of two...

Funny that both of us used processing and the take on the theme was very similar =)

Demon Hunter by Rocknlol 2012-04-26T04:13:00

It could be more fun if there was an easier way to know how much HP I still have!

Mage Duel by Kitch 2012-04-26T03:30:00

Really nice concept, very original, and very funny. I think you should keep on working on this project, because the current game still lacks a little bit of balance (also, my randomly generated terrain was terrible D=) I'd love to play a full game based out of this someday.

Also, too bad the "how to play" page spoiled what was going to happen! It would have been much better if you encouraged the player to play more than one match in some other way =/

Anyway, I liked it a lot!

Aedicula by emilng 2012-05-05T20:04:00

I like the character's face a lot! I like the game concept, it works wonders. It might become a great game if you expand it and think of more interesting level designs and maybe other puzzle elements that not just keys and walls.

Having to click to exit the level was bad though =/

subAtomic by MurrayL 2012-05-08T04:42:00

This is probably the most funny game in LD23. I loved the graphics, the animations were very smooth and funny. I feel like playing it again to see if there's a good ending (I played the game twice and got nuked in 2 different ways...)

Micro World by Oye Beto 2012-04-26T01:42:00

TyrusPeace's comment is exactly everything I wanted to say. My time was 44.9. I hope this wins the Sound category! XD

Planet 161 by saint11 2012-04-24T08:57:00

Congratulations on the result! It is amazing that this game was made in a 48-hour event. The level of detailment and the solidness shows you were able to manage the project very well. I hope I'll be able to make games this well-polished in the future.

As far as I know, platforming puzzles with multiple levels like this usually take a lot of time to make, but you managed not only to do all the programming and art but also made quite aa variety of clever level designs. I think there's not a single level that felt unnecessary for the pacing or stupid, which is rare nowadays even in commercial games.

It definitely looks like a game I'd pay to play, so I couldn't help but feel like there should be more levels and infinite x more weapons, as if I had forgotten it was actually made for a 48-hour competition.

In my first playthrough I found the last level too easy compared to the precious ones and felt a little disappointed. But weirdly enough, I played the game again in order to rate it and I got stuck in that level, falling for both of the traps you laid involving explosive boxes.

As a closing comment, a longer version of the game with more guns would be awesome (especially if it had a teleport gun =P) The only thing I didn't like was that the "Tiny World" theme could have been better explored. Except for that, the game is 10/10!

Planet 161 by saint11 2012-04-24T08:59:00

Also, funny thing you mentioned Goof Troop. I finished it last weekend. Good game, the very last puzzle was a pain in the ass to solve (also, quack shot FTW)

The Lair by Lilleman 2012-04-27T14:38:00

The boss fight was unexpected and funny, lol

Pixel Progression by pighead10 2012-04-27T03:30:00

835 pts.

Very good gameplay idea. works well, except that it's kinda difficult to fight enemies.

I like the idea of 10WonXero10 as well, because tapping the WASD keys all the time to move in sync with the framerate was a little bit uncomfortable.

Also, what if the key you used to attack was the same ones you use to reveal more pixels?

Making the pixels rectangular instead of square, as well as the use of cyan+red gave me a good retro feel for some reason. Though the graphics are very simple, they serve the game perfectly!

Great game!

This Precious Land by Ishisoft 2012-04-27T08:51:00

Most addictive game in the competition, by far. Spent litterally hours playing it. The balancing is great!

At first I was a little disappointed to see it played a lot like triple town. But then when I had no moves left and tried right-clicking the forests, I saw there was more to it, and that the triple-town-esque mechanic was just a base for something bigger.
Couldn't wish for a better polish in a LD game! Shouldn't there be some kind of score though? The experience was fun but kinda pointless if there's no way to evaluate my progress (or is there?)

LD24 — Evolution

Star's Requiem by davisan 2012-08-29T06:26:00

I couldn't finish stage one =/ and that was terrible because I was curious about the story... I think you should have made something much, MUCH smaller, so you'd have had time to polish the game a little bit more.

I have a few comments regarding more specific stuff:

Intro:

At the start I was really into it, but after some time it became boring because of the text speed and absence of a speed-up/skip button.

Asteroids:

Certainly the best-looking part of the game. Controls worked well, but game-wise, there was no difficulty at all. (unless the game was running slow in my computer)

Platforming:

Human character sprites and walking animation were kind of a let-down after the atmosphere you had set up, it seems that you didn't have time to work too much on it, considering how well other stuff looked. As a result, there was a lot of different art styles in the same game... I suggest going for something more simple in terms of graphics if you want to make such a big game the next time...

Gameplay-wise, the acceleration felt kind of odd. There were a few platforms that could only be reached if the character jumped while running at full speed, which was very hard to do when the character was standing on a small platform. Avoiding enemies was also too hard in some narrow passages.

One more thing (though it's just my personal opinion) is that the character's jump was too high for a game with such a serious setting and atmosphere, I think when you go for that kind of mood it's better to make this kind of thing less exaggerated.

Sorry for being too harsh, but the mood and music were so good that it was a shame that the rest of the game wasn't at the same level.

Singularity by Gabriel 2012-09-14T17:04:00

Great game, just like last LD. I really like you guys' works. Also, making randomly generated levels in a game jam sounds like a lot of work, congrats on that!

Unfortunately I didn't find the game very challenging, which is funny considering how hard you guys' last LD game was, lol. Just running and jumping was enough to finish most levels, but had fun anyway. I played the game before you added the difficulty bar so I can't tell for sure how far I went, but I do remember I only started finding the difficulty level ok much after finishing the story. If I had to change one thing about the game it would certainly be the difficulty.

Another problem I had was that I accidentally skipped every single cutscene by holding the "right" key before the next level started, and as a result, I only noticed I had a jetpack 4 or 5 levels after acquiring it ._.

But nevertheless, great game overall, and very well-polished!

ALLEL by rodrigomotta 2012-08-30T03:15:00

Great game, very well balanced and very good looking. I liked the fact that the enemies can also absorb power-ups, it adds a lot of depth to an otherwise simple game.

The only criticism I have is that pressing the mouse button repeatedly is very unconfortable (not to mention it's bad for our health, and for the mouse >_>), if you could fire continuously by keeping the mouse button pressed, this would be a 10/10 game (I'd definitely play it again if you change that!)

AGAIN Corp: Adaptive Genetic Artificially Initiated Corporation by CapGrip 2012-08-30T03:02:00

Cool graphics and camera angle. The concept is very interesting, too bad the bugs didn't let me finish it =/ I'll try the updated version later.

Unnatural Selection by saint11 2012-08-29T00:33:00

Great game, it was fun and the minion behaviour was very well done, it's impressive you made it in 48 hours. I like the idea of a tower defense-like game where you need to quickly leave your base to look for resources.

I think this could become a really popular game if you worked a little bit more on it - some things weren't properly explained, such as how the evolution and breeding works exactly, and that the red color means low HP (the first time I played, I thought that maybe it was an EXP indicator of some sort)

You could use a few "loading screen tips" during stage transitions to present this kind of information to the players, for example.

Also, sometimes I wanted minions that were low on HP to eat flowers instead of fighting, but they fought instead.

I don't even need to say I loved the graphics =)

Ninjural Selection by axcho 2012-08-29T01:06:00

Wow... That was impressive, I'm really curious to know how you made the game generate so many different creature shapes. I'd love to read about that!

Everything in the game is so small, and yet the animation is so fluid... I certainly like that. The movement was very well-polished but I found the main character's acceleration kinda hard to control... But since there's no way to die, that didn't become a big problem.

Too bad you can hardly say it's a game because there's no goal, I played it for some time trying to make my favorite-looking creatures survive, but got bored fast. This could become quite an addictive game if you worked more on its concept and gave it a goal and rewards.

LD25 — You are the Villain

Villainous! by gritfish 2012-12-22T06:55:00

Humor and presentation was awesome (especially the winning screen)

You can say the game has two parts: one in which you complete the train track and one in which you tie the victim to the rails and make the train run over him/her. In the first part, I felt there was no way to lose. It's more of a sandbox game in which you can build tracks in the way you like, using the given resources. Getting hit by a hero didn't penalize me in any way...

In the second part, it's somewhat easy to grab the victim and place them right in front of the train before he or she can be saved by the hero.

I loved the fact that you can select the gender (and well, species) of the hero, victim and villain.

Trolling by permanente1600 2012-12-29T07:20:00

Very nice art!

I felt the game was too easy (you can play it ad infinitum if you're careful enough, maybe make the unicorn plant bombs more frequently as the game goes on?)

Also, I think it would be better if there was some way of knowing how many turns it will take for the bomb to explode - or at least if it will explode in the next turn or not.

high-score: 221

Slab Judgment by Mysterarts 2012-12-19T05:34:00

Wow... very very nice game. Cool idea and the presentation is very unique.

My score was 113 in the first attempt and 513 in the second one.

In the second attempt I experienced a little bit of lag whenever I tried sending too many souls to hell at the same time.

Trina of The Depths by Christina Antoinette Neofotistou 2012-12-22T07:22:00

I love the mood, audio and graphics. I really like how you go for a different art style every LD.

The controls are very unique, but they get kind of annoying sometimes (especially when you still don't have any upgrades and want to go up) also I was wondering, did you consider using the mouse instead of keyboard?

The Cards Never Lie by saguaro 2012-12-20T18:11:00

This is the best game I've played so far, I really hope this wins in the Overall Jam category. You could make a bigger game out of this, I'd definitely pay for it.

The writing kept me very interested from the beginning to the end and the last part with the misunderstanding was genius.

Also, I really liked the font you used and the "card" theme in the visuals.

I only didn't give a 5/5 for everything because Claire isn't very villainous.

Kill the Hero by rodrigomotta 2012-12-18T03:51:00

Love the graphics and humor (character names, "you win" message, etc). Had a lot of difficulty placing the objects though =/ It took me a lot of attempts to clear stage 1, and I couldn't beat stage 2...

Kill Ville by ConflictiveLabs 2012-12-29T06:53:00

excelent gameplay idea, excelent execution, excelent mood/audio. Thumbs up! I like the title screen art.

Cutest degradation of the world ever!

Escape by voidstar69 2012-12-29T23:15:00

I was expecting some kind of plot twist that would give the story some sense - or explain why the game fits the theme "you are the villain", but nothing happened at the end.

I like the fog of war mechanic though, exploring the dark environments was fun.

SpaceGreed by lotusgame 2012-12-18T03:24:00

I really liked the concept. Right now it's very hard to rate it in the "Fun" category because there aren't many interesting bases around, but I can see a game like this becoming quite addictive when other players start taking it seriously.

Editing my stage was kind of confusing at first because I couldn't see how much money I had.

Age of Umpires by Tom 7 2012-12-28T05:31:00

I really liked the concept but I didn't fully understand what was going on in the first time I played (kept being knocked over as a player, also played randomly as a referee and eventually won the game even though I wasn't certain of what I was supposed to do)... Maybe it's because I'm not so much familiar with hockey.

I love the NES Hockey reference though :)

Burglary by TobiasW 2012-12-28T05:49:00

Wow, this is certainly one of the best games in this LD. Everything is very intuitive and gameplay is quite innovative (I love the lockpicking system). It's been a while since the last time I had so much fun with a stealth game.

If I had to change a thing in it, I'd keep the art completely abstract - there was no need to make a drawing of the characters in the title screen, the squares and circles worked just fine and gave the game a lot of personality.

I really like how intuitive the game is without the need of tutorials. Having the enemies line of sight always visible was a very cool feature that made it very easy to understand how the hiding mechanic worked.

Dungeon Mastermind by 7Soul 2012-12-22T06:32:00

Nice concept. I enjoyed playing it, though it was kind of easy after a few attempts (first I figured out the element, and then the other 2 traits) An in-game tutorial would have been nice.

I think the "attack" trait didn't make as much sense as the class and element. Why would a hero with low attack power fight a weak creature better than a hero with high attack power?

Bad Business Croc, Nobody Likes You by intmain 2012-12-20T18:52:00

I loved the presentation and theme. Unfortunately, the gameplay itself is kind of generic. Not to mention the luck factor plays too much of a big role.

Not a bad game overall though :) The graphs and the business speeches make it worth playing

Heroes are so Annoying! by Knighty 2012-12-25T03:33:00

Good game, takes a few attempts to get it right. I hate it when I place a minion and the hero doesn't cross its path. Maybe it would be more fun if minions had automatic behaviors in the map, like walking towards the hero or marching in a fixed cycle.

Universe's Next Top Villain by Floko 2012-12-22T06:38:00

Holy cow! this game is amazing!

The first time I played it I didn't realize the picture in the left was only for show and tried dragging stuff into elements in the picture. Then I figured out how to play properly and tried playing a second time, and had a lot of fun.

I found the idea of having to memorize what combinations have already been used quite interesting. Too bad it's not really necessary to win the game, especially in short matches.

Universe's Next Top Villain by Floko 2012-12-22T06:39:00

Also the credits minigame is awesome

AnteChristmas by nSun 2012-12-28T06:03:00

I loved the idea. Since you went through all the trouble of making all animation frames not intersect with each other like in a true G&W game, I think it would have been great if you always rendered all possible object positions with 5% of opacity or so, as it happens when you hold a LCD screen in a certain angle and look at it. It would certainly bring the game a very realistic, retro feeling!

Another Castle by RosyPenguin 2012-12-29T07:11:00

Fun game with nice music and graphics. I found everything too easy and the Tall Tower too hard. Had a lot of fun trying to beat that level at first, but I ended up giving up.

At first I was very confused with all doors having the exact same look. Maybe doors that connect floors and doors that spawn enemmies should look different in some way.

Just Politics by brantkings 2012-12-25T02:58:00

Very well executed. Most addictive game so far, played it until the end.

I love the sucking animation and the music.

The only thing that I would personally change is that the upgrades are always the same. It would be nice if there were some new onesin other levels - especially if they changed the gameplay a little bit.

Oh, and the mayor's face when he gets a lot of money is hilarious.

Great idea, I had a great time playing it, this is the best game I've seen so far. Please make more levels, this game deserves to have TONS of them :D
