LD18 — Enemies as Weapons

Kanbran by DrPetter 2010-08-23T07:41:00

Great classic console feel, like a super contra-type game on the boss stage. I noticed what wasn't there because the game was so clean: text. Most games have some kinda other text on the screen identifying which is score, health, level, etc. It made sense once I started playing, but that's the one thing I noticed right away. Other than that, just adding 'intro' and 'game over' screens and this starts to really become a console game.

Dr. Destruction and the Weapon that Turns Enemies into More Weapons by jplur 2010-08-23T08:03:00

Great use of "Play game.exe". Great intro, no question about that. Unfortunately, I didn't have the patience to get past the card flipping animations, it was just too slow. I'd like to be able to just pick the mini-games i want to play.

Loputon by pekuja 2010-08-23T06:20:00

The waves of enemies are interesting. The nunchucks are cool. I wish I could jump to the top platform... I think with a few more platforms on the screen, this game would have some serious legs to it.

Bac-Attack by Catmoo 2010-08-23T07:58:00

Great graphics, gameplay seemed a tiny bit slow, the spray is ruthless! No real defense against it. I'm not really sure I understood why turning the blue things green was doing something other than gaining points, it didn't seem to fight off the spray.

The South and the North suck yorkshire puddings! I'm from the Midlands me! by cptalbertwesker 2010-08-23T07:52:00

It's a funny concept, but it makes me think that it would be even better if you could just insert a pic of yourself in there and play as "you".

D3SCENT by moltanem2000 2010-08-23T07:47:00

Wouldn't download.

Sporg by voxel 2010-08-23T07:44:00

Looks an awful lot like the game Oxyd, only way slow to mov the ball around.

Fromulus by brandoncash 2010-08-23T06:22:00

The only reason this isn't 5 stars is that I can't tell what spells I'm using. the gameplay has a whymsical humor to it, similar to the fun cute-ness of the mario franchise's specialty levels. Great work.

Unarmed and Dangerous by bluescrn 2010-08-23T07:46:00

Couldn't get it to run, unfortunately.

Zombies as Weapons by Surrealix 2010-08-23T07:55:00

The graphics are fine for what it is. The idea is great, and it is really fun to thrash a zombie around by the leg. The only issue is actually a feature: the physics are a bit too good. I wanted to really be able to grab a zombie and wail on the other zombies with it, but it was too rag-dollish to do what I wanted it to do.

iceFIREice by Jhelle 2010-08-23T06:03:00

Great concept, well implemented with one exception: I couldn't tell how many hits I had left. I agree with the other sentiments that passing over walls was not that intuitive, but it didn't bother me because it made sense in order to make for interesting puzzles.

Singularity Smash by quin 2010-08-23T07:50:00

Crashes on execute, aw. Looks interesting though.

AVOIDAL by HybridMind 2010-08-23T06:18:00

Strong concept, well implemented. Smooth graphics and great batman-style word effects. I felt like I didn't have enough room to fairly avoid stuff sometimes, but it's not a huge deal. This game seems to me to have commercial potential as-is.

EnemiesOfTheLetterB by milsom 2010-08-23T06:16:00

The graphics are good, a few technical notes: throwing enemies didn't seem to work often, and I really wished I could move diagonally. I had a hard time escaping the feeling that I was playing a compiled game engine demo, but I do like the player and enemy designs, the eggplant with eye people are strong characters.

'Rover', Swarm and Gun Turrets by pauloseamano 2010-08-23T05:48:00

Cool concept. A few technical notes: I wish double-arrow keys would move the square diagonally. The circles jump around a bit during movement, if that were really fluid collisions it would look really sick. If you have to explain the gameplay, it should also be explained right there with the keys, etc. just so I don't have to stop playing to go read it.

Rainbow Hero by chaotikZA 2010-08-23T07:49:00

This warms my heart with how much it reminded me of Wolfenstein. And usage of zombie rainbows is a nice touch, but it just doesn't seem to be that close to the theme from what I saw.

Spacenoid by Manuel Magalhães 2010-08-23T06:06:00

Max humor score... this is a great joke game/mashup of arkanoid and space invaders. Just one technical point: to be fair, the weapon is just shaped like an enemy, it doesn't actually hurt you back like the other enemies.

Smores Attack by devinmoore 2010-08-22T09:08:00

Didn't have time to animate the enemies walking, or the score, but those are the next things I would do for sure.

Smores Attack by devinmoore 2010-08-22T15:36:00

Update: did get the score and a ton of bug fixes in well within the window... yay.

Smores Attack by devinmoore 2010-08-23T05:43:00

It's fine, i'm not making any excuses, it should have a loading screen and the restart game was a bit of an afterthought. However, it does only load things once, that's not why it's "slow". It actually isn't slow, it's just got really chunky animation. If you look at the code, you'll see that the "chunkiness" of the animation is deliberate, it uses a delayed timer to refresh all the movements. I appreciate all the feedback, I will use it for my next entry attempt. Thanks!

Dr. Stein's Super Weapons VS Giant Robots by benjaminum 2010-08-23T05:54:00

Really innovative game concept, and well-executed in that the innovative part of the concept works really well. Technical notes: the general mechanics, i.e. jump and move, are a bit touchy for my taste. The dialogue and heart containers are a nice touch, although the sounds seem like an afterthought.

Wherein Obstacles [...] IN SPACE by Sam Driver 2010-08-23T05:59:00

Great graphics, but the jerky scrolling kinda belied the space-theme. Really slick missile tracking, it was fun to "drag" them around gravitationally with the ship. Wished I could fire back!

Tactics Lasso! by Kayamon 2010-08-23T05:49:00

Sick lighting on that screenshot. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to play.

Super Collide-Em-Up by Draknek 2010-08-23T06:12:00

Awesome concept, great graphics for the concept, movement with a trackball is killer, the only complaint is that I wanted more, but that's a good thing. I feel that this is scaled appropriately for the spirit of the contest.

An Unfinished Game by Redbone 2010-08-23T08:00:00

Too short! Way fun. The background is so nauseating... maybe slow it down a bit? Great particle motion and very strong concept. I think this could be a commercially successful game if it had more of the same.

Psychic Prison Break by superflat 2010-08-23T06:10:00

Brilliant design on the walk-off splash screen. Great graphics for the concept. Technical notes: games that make me choose what to say and have big nebulous plots that evolve based on what I say are confusing. I just wanted to find a key and get out of there and explore some more, which is both good and bad... good because it means the game environment is very inviting, but bad because I didn't have the patience to deal with the talking-to in order to get there.

LD19 — Discovery

Zoobedoo by Hamumu 2010-12-20T21:40:00

Great graphics, especially considering the time constraints. The game leaves a little bit to be desired uniqueness-wise, but man, those graphics! Incredibly fast.

Cold Fusion by Grieve 2010-12-22T16:15:00

Very interesting that I ended up with several "snow" based entries. Maybe because its winter people thought of snow? Anyhow, the concept here is pretty good but the lack of zero turning radius is annoying. Also, I miss having a score and being able to drive with arrow keys.

The Day I Died by Cooshinator 2010-12-20T21:35:00

The controls are way hard, but the game concept is awesome. Fix the controls to be a little easier at least at first and it will be a web classic.

You must discover yourself. by Tyranus 2010-12-22T16:17:00

This has brilliant game mechanics, and it really made me rethink how to play a platformer which is not an easy thing to do. The extra questions in the game affecting the other "you" movement is a really slick touch.

Maze of Towers by kurtwaldowski 2010-12-20T11:41:00

Perfect look for a handheld-style game.

Alphabet Trader by devinmoore 2010-12-22T19:43:00

Thanks, i didn't mean to make the controls so vague, I will be extra aware of that next time.

Alphabet Trader by devinmoore 2010-12-22T23:35:00

Dang... i messed up the controls documentation! Actual controls: j left. l right. i jump. t trade. I should have double-checked that before submitting the game.

Juxtapose by Daniel X. Moore 2010-12-20T21:36:00

Pressing space just locked it up for me... not sure what I'm doing wrong but it definitely wasn't working the way I thought it would.

Discover the elements: Quest for Air by jrrt 2010-12-20T11:43:00

didn't work for me, windows 7 firefox latest non-beta.

Fog of War by jcurrie33 2010-12-22T19:41:00

It's not bad, but it is confusing how you are supposed to actually defend other than clicking the squares to force the mosters to re-hide them. I do really like the game mechanic of the monsters being able to re-hide squares, that's definitely unexpected.

Reflective Discovery by Fififox 2010-12-20T11:44:00

Can't demo w/o linux but looks interesting.

1492Island by Valandre 2010-12-20T21:32:00

For some reason I couldn't see the status stuff, so it made the game really confusing. Still, the concept is strong.

Control by RandomM00 2010-12-22T16:10:00

This reminds me of the Apollo VGC(sp)... very cool. Only thing is... Now I want a window to see space! Other than that, a really cool idea and well-executed for what it's supposed to be.

Cauldron of Doom! by Artix 2010-12-22T12:31:00

This would make a great kids game and is re-themable to educational items, which is great (i.e. actual elements combining to make compounds, to teach chemistry concepts).

Terra Nova by BadgerPriest 2010-12-22T16:13:00

The concept is great. The graphics help the concept. However, the controls are confusing and hidden... I'd rather just see them listed out so I don't have to keep looking. using the arrows to turn or move is novel but confusing as hell with no landmarks.

It's A Frickin' CAVE by Hempuli 2010-12-22T16:07:00

The movement seems smooth until the light source adjusts, and then the stuttering effect is out of sync. If it either moved a space at a time or smoothly, I'm sure it would look fine.

Quarters by Terry 2010-12-20T21:39:00

This is a really strong casual game. The rules aren't super clear but the concept is strong, if I had funding I would buy the rights to this one.

LD20 — It's Dangerous to Go Alone! Take This!

brotherhood by localcoder 2011-05-02T14:18:00

Nice engine concept... could be useful as an interface for others looking to make battle engines in their game.

Tornado by devinmoore 2011-05-02T11:06:00

I see that in firefox on ubuntu 11.04 the keys don't work, on windows it works, I'm not sure what the issue is.

Tornado by devinmoore 2011-05-02T11:10:00

I also hear it works OK on mac OS, so it must just be something goofy with the new linux version... ill look at fixing it for the post-ld version.

Tornado by devinmoore 2011-05-02T11:14:00

You might be too young to remember the old Mac DA mini games, but this is modeled after what I remember from those. Hopefully if you saw me in the keynote booting the mac, you got the idea that my game might be like this.

Tornado by devinmoore 2011-05-02T11:21:00

Found a bug where in a certain scenario the tornado doesn't hit you when it should, but I can fix it in post-ld version.

Myrktorch by gugugu 2011-05-02T14:20:00

The light mechanic makes the game.

c by Karethoth 2011-05-02T14:21:00

Strong ascii usage.

Gemini by Knighty 2011-05-02T14:22:00
