while falling, the camera didn't keep up with me. as a result, I died before I could see the enemy that killed me.

Entar: Why are you so much better at the games I make than I am?
@eli - the enemy projectiles aren't affected by the singularity because WHOA LOOK OVER THERE WHAT WAS THAT!? You didn't see it? No? Oh. Must've been my imagination.
Every tick a random disaster is chosen and its conditions are checked. If the conditions aren't right, it doesn't happen.
ps I am reading every comment and I hope to eventually release a far more polished version of this game.
Regarding war / peace: I originally planned for many more "self destruction" endings, that would happen if your peace was too low. As it stands, you only destroy yourself once you have nukes. The rest of the time, you're a peaceful city state and someone comes in and wipes you out.
This is hilarious the first run through, I came very near to the par time once I figured out the controls - they are Snake style, with no sharp turns. If I had remembered about using the space bar, that probably would have made the difference.
My suggestion would be to generally avoid naked old men in your primary screenshot, however.
This is a good bit of time wasting fun. The only change I would make would be for the ship to have an extra couple hitpoints, which get repaired in cities for 1 gold a piece.

If you get connection problems, you may have to tweak your router or your firewall. The game communicates with the master server via UDP.
Blast, you figured out my secret surprise! Yes, the game is a two player cooperative game. The worst part is I solved the last networking glitch in my head while I was showering this morning.
I'm thinking maybe I should try to arrange some time for everyone to play at once. Maybe try for 8pm EST each night?
Quite necessary to make sure everyone's had a chance to take their turn.
Also I don't think I could handle responding to everyone's actions more than once a day.
I am not a savant AI programmer, no. There's an army of GMs behind the curtain.

site's back.
yeah, we've been talking about ways to ease new players in, and also ways to make it easier for GMs to know what to do. I'll send a quick email inviting everyone who played to contribute ideas (or get removed from that list if they want) after judging is over.
We're also planning to do some pretty significant overhauls on the code post-judging, including OpenID for registration and better user interface.
by "we" I mean me (the programmer) and also the people I recruited to be GMs, and some of the players.
Everything about this game is wonderful. It is simple in its rules yet challenging, and the sound and art complement each other perfectly. It's got an innovative mechanic that is engaging and also sourced in mythology. I love it.
