LD20 — It's Dangerous to Go Alone! Take This!

Against the Wall by Acheron 2011-05-03T04:45:00

It's crazy how original this idea is! Major props! The idea of a world that is an infinite vertical wall is incredible, and already spurs my imagination (and probably the vertigo of people with a fear of heights).

I want to play a full fledged title set in a similar world. Also read some fiction set there! And... and... and...

Against the Wall by Acheron 2011-05-03T04:54:00

Holy wow that is a neat concept.

Take One of These by Kynrael 2011-05-02T05:58:00

Impressive work with the map generation, though I did end up reaching a level where you couldn't reach the exit http://i.imgur.com/zqQdm.png

This is obviously a just-getting-started kind of prototype, but this is a real solid core, and fleshed out with balancing and polish I could see this being an entertaining time sink. Great work for LD, obviously!

I wish there was an option to rate the description/notes so that I could give it 20 stars.

Diamond Hollow by arkeus 2011-05-03T05:51:00

Absurdly impressive work for Ludum Dare.

I was going for "take this" as in you were _taking_ the wanderlings to use as fuel for the Furnace. But maybe that was stretching a little. :P

Thanks for the nice comments! Yeah, there's a huge difficulty spike in there somewhere ... I was hoping to build a bunch of levels to go between the tutorial and the endgame, but I think I accidentally skipped right to the "okay now try THIS bwa-ha-ha" part. Glad to hear it's all working wel, though! Thanks again.

Ah, that's because I was an idiot and attempted to upload an .app file. Oops!

I fixed the link, now you can get a zip with a hopefully functioning app inside.

Blodyavenger: are you sure? I haven't heard of anyone else having troubles with the windows version.

eld: Thanks! I was very tempted to put together an improved version over the next couple of days, but I really should be working on my main project instead.

Ryantouk: Thanks! Yeah, some kind of saving would be nice. I could have whipped something crude up in not too long, but it frankly didn't occur to me! It probably would have if I'd ended up making more levels.

Cosr: In a hypothetical revamp, one of the top priorities would definitely be more than four directions of sprites. There's a definite element of arbitrariness here because of that limitation. Glad you liked it!

Dark Acre Jack: Drawing the main character sprite was actually the first thing I did, as I was figuring out the gameplay details. I think the frog monster with a funky walk ended up informing the rest of the execution. :P

SonnyBone, tzachs, Endurion:
Thanks! :)

tzachs: Yeah, it definitely should be more difficult to just grab someone while hiding.

Endurion: The "this" was meant to be the... fuel? ... that you was filling the furnace meter. But yeah, I was definitely stretching the concept of "take this" pretty thin.

Don't be so hard on yourself, and ignore the trolls: The random generation is clever, and the pixels are stylish! Yes, it's obviously unfinished, but what you have so far shows a good eye for game design.

Embers by NMcCoy 2011-12-19T07:19:00

That was... astoundingly distressing. Frightening in that cerebral and very personal way. Good job.

Clever mechanic for "listening", too, that first "aha" moment is perfect.

Phares by Felipe Budinich 2011-12-20T10:09:00

Holy cow, the art here is astounding. Loading this page, I thought, "There's no way that's a screenshot," and then it WAS. It's an incredibly entertaining feel, very well executed.

Unfortunately, the gameplay doesn't hold up. The lighthouse moves around, and I can make it go left or right, but nothing it does looks at all like "falling" or "bouncing."
It only seems to move up or down arbitrarily and jerkily, hitting the ghosts yields no discernible correlation. At one point, I just stopped clicking altogether, and it didn't seem to result in me losing. Not that I could tell, anyway. The lighthouse kept moving around randomly.

I gotta give you high marks anyway, because I'm so impressed with the general feel of the thing.

Comfort Zone by Phen 2011-12-23T00:30:00

Oh wow, thank you so much for the comments everyone! When I finished this (sleep deprived, at the last minute,) I wasn't sure if this would be at all comprehensible. I'm so glad to know it worked out, at least for some!

Multiple smaller stages was the original plan, and you're right, it probably would have been more manageable for the player. While building Level One (which was designed to let players figure things out), it grew long enough that I decided to just add challenges to the end of it instead of making more levels. I figured this way I'd be better at keeping the overall game short (for a quick LD playthrough). In hindsight, I actually think the setup for the ending (odd as it is) is improved by capping off one continuous experience.

Thanks for the feedback!

December is a Good Month for Dying by sstrandberg 2011-12-20T10:51:00

Haha, "Waiting for players. 1/3"

Very fitting, yet unfortunate, that this will be the experience most people have with your game. :P

I'll keep trying back occasionally, maybe I'll get lucky.

The Word Alone by Matt Rix 2011-12-19T22:09:00

I always think there can't be any more original find-a-word-from-these-letters game ideas, and then someone clever like you surprises me.

Trapped Alone by andrew845 2011-12-19T05:06:00

The .exe isn't running!

"This application has failed to start because MSVCR100.dll was not found." I've tried re-downloading but the same error pops up when I try to start the .exe.

Dying Alone by matt 2011-12-20T01:54:00

The random meteors are a problem when one slip-up forces you to redo the entire (slow) thing from the beginning.

It's not even really a problem with "difficulty," as it is with frustration: the otherwise interesting atmosphere is ruined when you're redoing the first 5 minutes of gameplay for the twentieth time.

It actually seems like a pretty good game: I want to see the rest of the game. I really just don't think it's worth it to redo everything up to the point where I last died.

I hope checkpoints were planned, but you didn't have time for them? With the addition of a checkpoint system, I think this would be a fun and interesting platformer.

Alone On Planet 54672 by kj654321 2011-12-20T09:54:00

Fun!

Unfortunately, "always hold the right arrow" seemed to be the answer 90% of the time -- you don't really coast fast enough downhill for it to be worth "saving fuel" that way -- since it takes a looong time to coast anywhere, you're still burning a lot of gas, AND you're making it less likely that you'll make it over the next hill.

I liked the mechanic, though, and it's some nice, clean and stylish art!
