Great game, everything works well, except that the music gets annoying pretty quickly. (java crashed when installing, but the game still managed to start...)

john_conder9 2012-04-24 20:07

Wow this is the best entry I've played so far! If anyone is wondering if this is worth using the installer: it certainly is. It's a really fun throw-back to the SNES/Gameboy days, and, really well put together.

My ONLY gripe about it was having to use space bar so much, it would have been really nice if that was a different key (it made my thumb hurt a bit.) Other than that this was an awesome entry, great job guys!

Thanks for playing guys!

We were hoping to package it up as an applet for web, but for some reason the game was streaming files off the site as-needed rather than caching the entire thing, and we couldn't get it fixed in time (tried looking into MIME types on the server, alas, no success).

You can actually use F, Space, Enter, or Control for anywhere where Space is usually used (menus/shooting).

netmute 2012-04-24 20:51

Couldn't rate because I'm using a Mac. Sorry :(

jeroenimooo 2012-04-24 21:00

One of the best overall games so far. The graphics are sooo clean. the gameplay is not to easy not to hard. was a quite long game. Well done!

danvil 2012-04-24 21:18

Good game with well done graphics.

kungphoo 2012-04-24 22:03

A winner. Some graphical glitches in the temple and I could shoot through walls, but overall a great experience.

jiddo 2012-04-24 22:08

Really nice little game. I really like the charming old-school graphics and the fog of war effect when indoors. I also must congratulate you for making a complete game with a story and an ending and everything. Nice work.

Only disappointment is that there weren't any treasure in any of the ~1 million pots I destroyed. Isn't that an unwritten law of game design - that pots must contain treasures?

I don't get why you say "Windows (JNLP Installer)" tho. It ran just fine for me on Linux for example.

davedobson 2012-04-24 22:08

Very fun, and quite elaborate for the time involved. The art style is very retro and fun, and I enjoyed all the different terrain types and interactions between the various kinds of beings and objects. Nice work!

bubuiic 2012-04-24 22:19

Nice game, great looking graphics. Feels really polished, too.

ace 2012-04-24 22:19

Awesome game, the music was well made if a bit short.
And that's also pretty much the only compaint I really have of the game; It's well made but short.

I know people probably won't read replies to their posts, but I think I should address things anyway, for the benefit of anybody else reading this.

The lasers-through-walls was actually a conscious game design choice on our part. The aliens would have been useless otherwise (the levels would have had to be much more open). Ideally (given more time to work on it) a compromise would have been to make half-height walls in some places.

I also should have added (again, didn't due to lack of time) a piece of code to order entities in order from top of the map to bottom of the map, to get them to draw in the correct order (thus avoiding say, walking very slightly under the door).

I listed it as Windows because I wasn't able to test it on any other operating systems. Updated now though (downloaded a Linux VM to test). I actually changed it before reading that comment. :)

Thanks all for playing the game! The comments are appreciated.

vaelzan 2012-04-24 22:31

Our programmer already commented but I also wanted to thank you all for the feedback we have been getting. Still a lot more we wanted to add to the game but really happy to see people enjoying something we worked so hard on.

It's truly great to see something that we worked on get so many positive reviews.

In response to several of the points about the music, yes, it is a bit short. I find writing music within a time limit difficult, it's a creative process that doesn't really take kindly to being rushed, and I rarely manage to get anything completed that I'm happy with. I would definately have liked to make it longer, perhaps in the realm of a minute or so before it looped, but time constraints prohibited me from doing so. Unfortunately, I also wrote several pieces that weren't included in the final product (Again, due to time constraints) that were significantly longer than the music for the Grasslands/Title Screen....but that's the way these events work.

Learnt quite a bit about composing on a deadline and working through the block, and alot more about writing in varying keys of music with more than just block chords. You should see some significantly more developed music should we participate again.

geekygenius 2012-04-25 03:55

Was I the only one breaking all the pots looking for rupees?

30dogs 2012-04-26 02:13

^Oh I broke alll of the pots. Even as I was doing it I just knew it was pointless as the game gives no promises of rewards. And yet I left no pot intact.
This game was awesome! Felt like a Zelda meets Commander Keen. Best 48-hr adventure game I've played. I have too many compliments so I'll just leave it at KUDOS!

skullsoft 2012-04-26 02:13

LOL! "Publisher: The Evil Cult. Name: Stranded. Downloaded from: http//evilcult/net. Allow?" :D

LOL I can't beleive u though to of letting the player smoosh goos with pushable rocks!

:$ I was a dumbass and blocked the way back with a rock.

jwolf 2012-04-26 02:24

Pretty fun! I liked the fact that you could do recon-by-laser in the temple level.

radthordax 2012-04-26 02:39

A fantastic game! It made me feel so nostalgic! I know 72 hours isn't long enough to make a full-length game, but I could have played this for WEEKS! I didn't want to turn the music off, because it wasnt too repetitive, it was just loud enough that you noticed more tan you should. Once I turned it down (I had to use windows volume as there was no game setting for it) it was perfectly fine! You lot did a fine job!

xpoint 2012-04-26 08:49

That felt like a real game, though a bit short, which is to be expected. Other than that, it felt complete. Good job!

blob 2012-04-26 19:15

Nice, but I didnt see the dog. Nice its bug free, decent AI and fog of war.

blob 2012-04-26 19:19

Also I felt bad for killing fellow blobs >:(

triplevisiongames 2012-04-26 19:19

Fantastic 5*! Really enjoyed that! Got almost bullet helly towards the end and liked the shadow bits. Have you made anything else I can play?

moop 2012-04-26 19:25

Great fun and a well polished game.

vaelzan 2012-04-26 20:53

This is the only game that we've released. We're working on a post-jam version of this game though.

desmarkie 2012-04-26 21:24

Enjoyed playing this despite it's shortness. Great job.

derrickdool 2012-04-26 21:26

Liked the "dungeon crawler-y" switch up in the temple.

pabloam 2012-04-26 22:19

Good game and polished!

I Like it!

heugamer 2012-04-26 23:23

Wow very fun and cute i really liked the music too!

kunonooni 2012-04-26 23:25

5 Star Glory!

derosa 2012-04-27 00:46

You made an excellent work! Made me feel like playing with my old NES...

r3ason 2012-04-27 05:52

Ah, this is so great! Awesome job guys! First thought that came to mind: Commander Keen :D Hope y'all make a sequel to it! Thanks for sharing!

pixel_3 2012-04-27 06:35

Best entry I've played thus far. Very well polished very fun and complete game. The most disappointing part was finishing it. Until you realize you can play it again. :D
I will say one thing though, I wished the hitbox for the player was a bit tighter. There were times when I accidentally moved a stone in the way but should have had just barely enough room for the player to move through but couldn't. Still I'll keep up with it and play future versions.

alwaysgeeky 2012-04-27 18:37

Reminded me of such cool old school console games! sweet sweet graphics :)

alexlarioza 2012-04-27 22:11

Cute little game you have here! =]

moth 2012-04-28 11:15

Great effort in the graphics and sound! Really nice little Zelda-style framework. I think an extended version with at least a couple more levels would be superb- an outside segment on the mountain and another dungeon inside the volcano itself? :) I do think there are makings of a really fun larger game here in any case.

Loved the fog of war in the dungeon, I thought that was super cool. Zelda reflexes forced me to break every single jar for reasons I am not entirely sure of.

Great effort and I think it all comes together in a nice and complete-feeling package.

netmute 2012-04-28 11:31

Works well on OSX. The sounds lack a bit behind the actions, but thats fine :)

Impressive graphics, nice sound. The story reminded me a bit of Commander Keen :)
Clever level design as well. Every time there was a bigger battle, the tiny red healing tube wasn't far away.

And I found a kitty ;)

Good job!

mikesoylu 2012-04-28 12:19

I really enjoyed this one. Graphics, music, level design.. really well polished. I also love the "KEY GET!" style messages xD I just had a problem where you got the flux capacitor: I kept teleporting to the end of the level while trying to get it.. maybe you could make it appear after you got the capacitor. Other then that I loved it! good job.

olkeencole 2012-04-29 01:50

Awesome retro game. Looking forward to the post Jam version.

gritfish 2012-04-29 03:28

Great little old-school game. Reminded me of the commander keen overworlds. Fantastic graphics, but the music got a bit repetitive. I noticed the easter egg but I couldn't get to it.

angelk 2012-04-30 03:37

The graphics and sound were really well executed, and there's a nice polished feel to the game. The overworld map is great! It gives a really nice feeling of progress to the game. Good job!

birchmountain 2012-04-30 09:07

A very fun game even though it's quite easy. Not that much content but it looks like you've concentrated on making the game look good, which i can say it does. I would really like to see a post jam version with some epic boss fights! At one point in the game i had a problem shooting while facing down, but it immediately fixed it self!

Great game!

gregdevice 2012-04-30 15:44

Nice solid entry! One of the more complete and well thought out games posted.

vigrid 2012-04-30 20:11

A very nice, well-paced and polished game. I had fun from the moment I started it till I completed it. At first when I pushed a rock I expected Sokoban-like puzzles, and were happy there weren't any.

Oh... And destroying the vases was very unsatisfying. These should drop coins, just for the sake of the pick-up sound effect! :)

A thought occurs... The first person to design a ship without a flux capacitor, will design a ship that is indestructible. There are so many ships that break because of that one part :).

matthias_zarzecki 2012-04-30 22:35

This is lovely! I much prefer the menu-music over the ingame-music, so I kinda hung out there :)

unicornpooping 2012-05-01 03:34

Awesome to the max! Well done :-)

rybar 2012-05-01 03:38

Great game! I loved the temple, with the enemies being invisible, and the laser shots being lit up, very cool. Was hoping to find some loot in some of those pots though. Very polished, even for a jam entry. I'm impressed!

nickc 2012-05-01 05:18

I enjoyed this little game. Great art and no bugs! Complete with sound and credits. Well done!

kane 2012-05-01 18:18

A little very nice game with an excellent musics and a nice design, I have enjoy play it :)

robcozzens 2012-05-02 08:55

Really cool! Very impressive game for such a short time.
The only problem was the lighting effects in the temple didn't work quite right.

evilsandwichstudios 2012-05-03 10:37

Very nice implementation, I was surprised that the shots got through the obstacles (like trees). I spent a lot of time hiding behind stuff and that was unnecessary. I'm not saying that they shouldn't though, it actually became part of the mechanics. There are also some tweaks missing (like when you lose, you should either be born on the same spot, or you should have to do it all again, not go back to the beginning but with all the enemies killed). Anyway, this are all minor things for a 72 our competition :-)

kddekadenz 2012-05-03 16:09

A entertaining game but it is not innovative.

paveldlouhy 2012-05-03 18:45

It is nice! it is fun! It is polished! Music was not playing properly but it was (I guess) because I was using slow PC. Playing on Windows (Currently I am not brave enough to try to find out how to run JNLP on Mac). Good job!

havchr 2012-05-03 20:09

Huuuge top-down commander keen vibes!! :)
Nicely polished and fun to play, but some times the too pixel perfect collision map was annoying. but very good.

tcstyle 2012-05-03 20:36

Great zelda-like game. The enemies are challenging visuals and sound are good and the level design is solid.
I liked the pixel art of the world map more than the sprites and tiles.

terrified-virus 2012-05-03 23:13

Love the game! The story was pretty good, and it was addicting! Loved the theme also, it fits in good.

azurenimbus 2012-05-10 17:05

Nice, enjoyable game. The music is soothing. If you could work on the collision boxes, it would make the gameplay more fun.

kevinworkman 2012-05-13 03:32

This is awesome. I really liked the Zelda-with-a-blaster-gun feel, and everything was really well-polished and fun. You've addressed some of the other complaints, so my only complaint is that the game lacks its own webpage. The webstart worked great for me (and should for anybody, including the guy who said he couldn't play it on a mac), but now I want to post a link to it on facebook! I guess I'll use this page, but it would be cool to see it have its own page, along with an applet and whatnot.

I see you guys have your own site, but I do offer free Java game hosting at http://StaticVoidGames.com, might be worth checking out.

Anyway, great job! Good to see a fellow Java developer make something that the language can be proud of!

machinas 2012-05-13 04:51

nice job. pretty standard gameplay, though I did like the light effects in the temple level. I accidentally hit the purple warp in the last room without getting the flux capacitor, so I had to walk through the whole temple again. Challenge level felt fine. Would be neat to have had some different upgrades / more enemy variety. You know... feature creep! Nice job

thegreystudios 2012-05-13 06:59

Love most of it, the only thing I really had to fight with were the controls. Don't know what made it so hard for me. :)
Anyway overall really great game. Thanks! :) Simon

rvmook 2012-05-13 08:54

Cool game, was a bit too easy for my taste. It also felt a bit weird that you could shoot through the walls. Music and sound were on point and I enjoyed playing it.

dalsgames 2012-05-13 10:56

I really liked this game! Keep up the good work :)

valeour 2012-05-13 14:26

Other than being stuck inside a boulder, it was fun and very pretty. Very cool entry.

sonnybone 2012-05-13 21:09

Lots of content here... the different worlds and tiles... the world map... the rock pushing/lazer shooting/fog of war/etc. Good job!

benw 2012-05-13 22:13

Reminds me of LLTP. The only problems I had were that you could get caught between the teleporters occasionally and that the final teleporter is too close to the flux capacitor.

ehtd 2012-05-13 23:59

I liked it a lot. Awesome entry.
