LD22 — Alone

Angry Kitten Gods Of War by deps 2011-12-19T11:40:00

Whilst this game certainly doesn't scream the theme to me, it is pretty fun :-). When I started playing it I didn't realise that it would be a good game for working out a good strategy to win reliably - it looked to require a lot of mechanical skill - but whilst playing it became apparent that with proper positioning and correct tactics prior to entering a room you can kill most enemies before they even get a shot off, which is what makes this kind of game good imo :-).

It literally take 12 seconds of holding down a key to do part of your puzzle. And whilst doing this the graphic in the background is just of me pushing a crate. The fact I had to have probably around ten attempts to complete this game means that I spent ~2 minutes of my gameplay holding down a button and waiting. That is very poor game design, in my opinion.

You should probably put a note on this saying we need to install Python :-P.

Alone by Frimkron 2011-12-19T10:28:00

This is the first game I've played in the rating process which I've really genuinely enjoyed. When it's completed I shall have to play it :-). In terms of the competition, however, it didn't seem to fit the theme at all; isn't innovative; and despite the mood being great, was not the mood suggested by the theme (if the theme had been, say, outsider, then I would have *definitely* given you five stars).

Blue Moon by Cirrial 2011-12-19T07:35:00

This is a fantastic job! I really enjoyed playing it! The primary mechanic of the game is really innovative - I think it's a downside when you turn the generator on the rest of the game is trivialised. To have come up with the artwork, mechanic and smooth implementation within the 48 hours is really impressive :-)!

Ravenwood by Danik 2011-12-19T07:47:00

This was a very nice job - the mood was the best thing about this game, really. Despite having no mechanics in particular about being alone the atmosphere is very... Lonely, I suppose the word is.

Last breath by deepnight 2011-12-20T08:53:00

This is simply fantastic. The artwork is brilliant, music is excellently suited to the game, the fundamental game mechanic is good and the level design is well thought out.

This Sentence is False by wademcgillis 2011-12-20T09:04:00

The main character was decently drawn, and the game fit the theme very well: I felt pretty alone whilst playing it :-/.

frank by volando 2011-12-19T10:54:00

The major redeeming feature of this was the graphics - the backgrounds are really nice. Apart from that, the controls... Err... Control was more annoying than interesting to learn to use :-P.

Volcanox by leafo 2011-12-19T13:42:00

I think your fundamental mechanic has two flaws: the rate at which the slimes respawn renders the gun redundant (otherwise it could be a timing challenge), and the random movement of the slimes then makes the game a game of chance. Apart from that, however, this is a very well executed game!

The Pit by aaronsnoswell 2011-12-20T08:35:00

I feel somewhat bad giving such low ratings - but it reflects the fact what you have is incomplete. Your idea sounds fine, but sounds more of an artistic thing than a game imo.

Alone by poohshoes 2011-12-19T06:06:00

I don't think there's much to say about this - it's clearly far from a full game and that is the reasoning behind my ratings. The sprites are reasonable, but the lack of animation lets it down a lot.

Alone in the Dark by JayCFraser 2011-12-20T10:43:00

@epiak:
I imagine the problem you had with picking up flares was that the flare was not in the tile in front of you. The "use" command only operates on the tile in front of you (e.g. as with the doors).

The invalid move sound seemed necessary to serve the purpose of telling the user they are not moving any further when they can't see - though I take your point that they sound annoying >.<!

I also don't understand why the config app didn't work for you... That's very strange... Anyway, if you change the first line in "settings" (a text file with four numbers in it XD) to a 1 that should make it windowed =).

Sadly, as far as being a game is concerned, there are a couple of bugs and minor issues I'd really have liked to set straight but I only found them when I had time to test the game after the competition had ended. Hence, this doesn't come across particularly well as a game, which is a shame.

The LD Lament by TiMMyyMMiT 2011-12-19T12:31:00

This is by far and away the most in theme game I have played thusfar - kudos :-).

Run Away by Dax 2011-12-19T09:09:00

That was a really fun little game :-). It really demonstrates well how good it can be to stick with simple mechanics and focus your time on level design (which is what I assume you did!).

L'Joe Locked in his Basement...Alone with his imagination by Alexander The 1st 2011-12-19T07:50:00

I don't really know what to put for this - the problem is that this is just nowhere near finished.

Varon Sector by kotrenn 2011-12-19T08:32:00

One simple suggestion to make this game a little more user friendly would be to draw the enemy fire in a different colour to your own - personally I find it difficult to assess what I am meant to be avoiding.
Also, the regeneration of health happens so slowly as to have no effect on gameplay whatsoever - unless I were happy to sit somewhere safe for ten or so minutes...
Another thing that would really make the game more playable would be checkpoints! I realise this is a more complex suggestion, but as it is I had many attempts at level 2 with no success (which I only managed to get by renaming "level1.txt" to "level2.txt") to persevere with the game.

Cave Runner by Whitenickel 2011-12-19T08:05:00

Like many entries, this is far from complete. In terms of what is there, having to start the game from the first level every time I die makes the game unenjoyable. If I hadn't been persevering in order to try and see as much as what you had done as possible, I would not have known on level 14 I would control three blocks as opposed to one - which could be made interesting with good level design.

The Secluded Cave by Stargoat 2011-12-19T09:19:00

I really like the graphical style, I must say :-). Something about overhead line of sight is very aesthetically pleasing.

Drift by Eliot 2011-12-19T11:02:00

I think that the amount of time the player has to wait between issuing commands in this game detracts seriously from the fun. As soon as my commands weren't resulting in my, erm, dude landing again immediately, I was spamming the suicide button to try again.
