It's a matter of taste. I really liked the smooth acceleration. Thanks to it the game was more demanding :).

It's a matter of taste. I really liked the smooth acceleration. Thanks to it the game was more demanding :).
This game is so fun! Not to mention that it has an awesome music. Atm my personal favorite from the jam entries :).
That's true. I could've made the health regeneration and speed of gathering life essence a lot quicker :). Can't touch it now.
Make sure to use the menu sun cheat for testing. Should make upgrading less painful :).
This game is an really unique experience. Loved the fps part :).
Sadly can't play it. Missing MSVCP71.dll :(. Please fix this.
This game is really fun. The gameplay progression is constant, sounds and graphics are really cute, enemies are quite demanding. Well done :).
Very well polished and enjoyable :)
Every level besides level A seems so hard! Especially when there's much happening on the screen, as bullets are hardly visible then. One hit death feels like too much. On the other hand the game is pretty fun, and the music... It's music to my ears :)
Oh no! It's Unplayable for me. The game Runs too fast.
It's nice that you've fixed those pesky problems with the windows version. Now the game is much more enjoyable. I like how high gameplay potential it has, and that we had pretty similiar ideas for the game :).
Can't play it here, as it runs too quickly.
Good guys in your game sure enjoyed desintegrating me into pieces, as multiple laser rays from their spaceships have crossed each other on the way to my destroyed vessel, to create a symphony of explosions!
Love it. Customisation is always a thing that I like to see in games. Good job!
Simple gameplay-wise, addicting thanks to smartly put-together references. Just wish it was a little longer.
"Yarr har, fiddle dee dee, being a pirate is all right with me".
Thanks everybody for all the comments and suggestions!
@Caranha
Have you tried running the game with debug.bat?
If still nothing happens, try typing "java - version in the windows command window. Do you get any output then?
@Yezu
http://slick.javaunlimited.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4812
This might be related to your problem. Please answer if you'll try this solution and if it works for you.
@agmcleod
You could try editing the bat file to:
cd directory
export JAVA_HOME=/System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home
java -jar Convulx.jar
Just make sure to input the correct java directory, as it might be different for you. This method might make a copy of the game in your jdk folder so don't forget to clean it up later on.
Again thanks for all the comments and suggestions!
Simple and addicting. Played couple of times to try to beat the previous scores, but last levels always got me.
Reminds me of the "Stratosphere conquest of the skies" pc game from the 1998. Big dose of randomness made it hard to win just this one round, but the gameplay quality made up for it. Well done.
Really enjoyed this one. You can't go wrong with non-linear levels.
"graphics is one of the weakest parts of the game I think."
haha, can't really agree with you on this one.
Every part feels solid and the game has much to offer.
Quite enjoyed it.
A remarkable gamemeplay that is keeping the player addicted until the very last level. Hats off to you sir.
Interesting concept. I enjoy trying out coop LD games with such player interaction mechanics, while most of the other games are just about controlling a square to move it to other square triggering a win. *Blames the theme*.
Very refreshing. I'm Glad that I could play it and experience the story where you are put in the body of a district attorney, who might have to deal with such cases many times in the job.
Wonderful music and demanding gameplay requiring the player to get hang of the aiming system. After couple of tries I finally got the annoying flying square boss thing.
I've always been a fan of games such as dungeon keeper or populous, and that's what your game is reminding me of. Durning the playthrough I've thought that most of the dungeons in the games follow the pattern of beeing dangerous, but still inviting for the adventures who are seeking experience and loot, probably to level up just like it happens here! There's a small bug in opening the room actions window when the room is close to the border. It makes it difficult to see the window options then. Deserved top mark for the innovation.
The models are just wonderful. They must've taken ages to make and to get their meshes, textures and animation right. I've enjoyed killing every single one of those fluffy things on my way out.
Now that's some nice high-quality sprites that you've got there. You are a skilled pixel artist my friend. The only thing that the game could use is maybe some music, but it still feels polished without it.
heh, level 4 was quite tricky. No wonder that you are impressed by anyone finishing it.
In the first playthrough for some reason I got randomly teleported outside of the map bounds. Luckily that hasn't stopped me from trying the game for the second time. The mood and the gameplay is nice, while I don't like the small contrast in the background tiles, as it makes them look blunt.
Finished it in 348 actions total, what makes me wonder how many moves one would get in a perfect run. Maybe someone is up for a challege?
Truly a masterpiece. Wouldn't be surprised to see it win the mood category.
Haha, the first death explosion has scared me way more than it should. Also nice idea about placing those spikes on the credits screen. I like the style that you've got there.
Was looking forward to playing this game after seeing a post about it and now after doing so I am not disappointed. Sweet interpretation of the theme, what in return gave a highly enjoyable game.
Pretty funny if you play it with a mouse macro on. Great job for your first entry!
I find the reload mechanic pretty sweet. For me it's the main hook-element in the game that makes the simple aim and shoot gameplay more rewarding. It involves developing an actual skill that improves durning the game. That's very nice.
Got it fixed by disabling the texture mipmapping on assets.
@MrNyarlathotep
Ran out of time. It was supposed to be shown on the level completed animation. Now it's just an easter egg.
Just fixed the input lag in the web version. Looks like the black sprites bug in the webgl build can be avoided by just disabling mipmaps. Thanks to that i could re-enable Occlusion culling and lower quality settings, what removed the wonky input.
sweet, a flappy wizard!
Doesn't want to start. The screen appears for a short moment, then closes without showing any messages. My specs are: Windows 8.1, JRE 8 update 91, G3258 CPU, GTX 750 GFX.
Great entry with sweet gameplay. Are you planning on updating it in the future?
Runs too quickly on my machine. Can't pass the first part of the level which requires pressing up while also going forwards.
Hard to tell what is happening, especially on the later levels which contain enemies. A guide or an explaination in-game would be handy.
Love the concept.
*SPOILERS*
That blue screen sure was scary! :)
*SPOILERS*
I like how the hero can be invulnerable while using the shield in exchange for missing the points for killing, which is a neat game mechanic.
Enjoyed the side dodging mechanic, which when quickly used allows us to swim forwards a lot quicker, although makes the speed shapeshift obsolete.
A lot of content made in such a little time. For me the game is 5 out of 5 fun, counting the controls, where the default player facing controls are nicely adding some difficulty to the game if the player is up for a challenge. Still the aiming was a little wonky in either control mode, where the hero is simply not looking directly at where the mouse is.
Windows link is broken.
The release doesn't require .pdb files included. They weight a ton and are just for the development phase.
Interesting twist on the theme, with more elements introduced besies kill zones would be even more fun to play. Graphics feel simple, with over-the-top effects, where enjoyable audio got its positive kick. Wish that there were more levels!
Got to late day 2! Almost whole screen was in enemies then. Would spam grenades, but they got more expensive the more I purchased. Aiming on screen edges, shopping safety and enemies spawning on player could get some love, but still I had a good amount of fun.
Although it's hard to keep up after a short while, it well suits the theme. New mail could appear on houses only, instead of grass, as right now it looks like there was a very clumsy mailmain working before you trying to get the mail between the residents, and lost all of it in the plants.
What a lad this customer is, not accepting a wrapped bread that barely touched the floor and just leaving. Next run I smashed the bread so hard into the customer's face that the wrapping came right off, and flew off screen. I liked the player vs physics mechanic, but i wish that there were more to it.
There is no download link for your game!
@triplefox @stateoff @mike-inprinciple Thank you for your comments!
@stateoff I'm thinking about doing a post-compo version. With looting, equipment management and progression finished, playability would be an order of magnitude better.
Solid. Attention to detail, like special sound when you jump straight on the worm, and your design approach, thanks to which whole game feels finished, shine here.
Everyday is the same deal. People rushing in the train, busy pushing each other so much, that they forget to sit when they do get in. I've travelled by trains a lot and this hits the spot. Could extend the game by adding another station, where the player has to get out of the train, where people outside just pour in, the moment the train doors open.
- Pico-8? lovely! - Solid game? Check. - Becoming a celebrity? Check. - AAAAAAAAAAA? Check. You've got it all. Congratulations!
Game doesn't want to start, because OpenAL32.dll is missing. Is it possible for you to include this file in the download, or give a link where I can download this library?
Doesn't want to start here. Res folder is in the same folder as the jar. My specs: - Windows 10 - java version "12.0.2" 2019-07-16 - Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 12.0.2+10)
@flying-cat-of-the-pepes Thanks for the reply. I've tried debugging it in the console and this error appeared: Snap 2019-10-07 at 22.00.37.png Please let me know if you fix it. Your game looks interesting and I would love to play it.
I played through a couple of levels and I've got some questions: - What are those items with the H letter that we collect? - Found an item that looks like a pick. I guess it was supposed to unlock attacking? - Does the level with the pick has an exit?
You've got an interesting movement mechanic. You can do double jump by standing up from crouching, while holding the jump button, or walljump if you touch the wall when falling. Had lots of fun with those two!
Besides that there's not much happening. The music in the background is nice, but very quiet. Since jam games tend to have loud sounds, requiring you to start them with system volume set to something between 10-20%, some players might not even know that it's there.
Is that your first game jam game? If so congratultions on your first game and welcome to the Ludum Dare community. You guys have got a pretty solid entry for a first one :).
@floscha62 That makes it clear. Thanks!
@ryu Thanks for uploading the WebGL version!
Nice variation of a tower defense game, where money for turrets is not a problem, but their placement.
I've found out a trick that you can do by placing the turret on the spawn tile, then moving one tile at a time towards the end, until you have the whole level in turrets: Oops.png
Played in a normal way too, and both playthroughs were fun. Well done!
Ah yes, you've used the sacred music instrument. The best type of an instrument for the game jams. Nice entry for just 12 hours, props to you!
Congratulations on your first Ludum Dare entry and welcome to the community! You had fun recording those sounds, haven't you? Especially the "oh no" one. It gets me every time.
Short and nice. What blindness feels to blind people in a nutshell. You don't know that something is there unless you touch it.
Got to say that it was an unique experience. Walking mechanics work like in the oldschool DOS RPGs, where one press is moving your character one tile. The game name surely checks out.
@hcursino Nice one, I've chuckled at the Minecraft in hell.
Solid mechanics and idea. Like others mentioned, it has some of a walking simulator here and there, but the music compesates for it. Well done!
Now that's a gem right there! Feels like a game which you could release if you feel like spending couple extra days for additional content. I've enjoyed it so much, that I've decided to play again to see how far I can push it past the level 15: Gem.png Then my finger refused to continue cooperating. Couple of loose ideas, which have appeared durning playing: - There could be a building, which autoclicks from time to time - Could use a sell/destroy tower functionality - Make it possible to also collect resources with the keyboard, spacebar for an example - Since build menu takes whole screen, it could pause the game while it is open
Well done on making a fun and good looking game!
@frogman Thanks! Inventory, which in the end was used for collecting the quest item, was also supposed to allow you to do simple crafting and select a weapon. Those rocks that you collected were planned to be a throwing weapon, where branches would be used for creating a shelter or a fireplace.
Thank you all for the comments! @mikeliosus Doom sprite-ish vibes, right? @marcin-j Oh yes, a compas or a map would help. Thought about adding a small direction mark in the corner, but decided that it's not true to the theme. After all, the scout leader takes all of your equipment, compass included, so you have to depend on your gut feelings. I've played with various camera settings, and I've stuck to this design, as it feels more like you are the character, having to look around to scout the environment. In the beggining I also thought that a perspective camera would be cool, but tests have shown that pixels got nasty at higher distances, and 2D shaders would need to be updated to support the perspective camera. Basicly typical stuff for game jams. So many ideas, so little time to do it :).
Thanks for valuable comments! @corrade Camera has a life of its own. It tries to stay in-bounds of the level a little too much, even though there are physical bounds that you can't pass there. Because of that you might actually loose your character from sight in certain angles and places. @ender7 That was the main aim, if not for the pesky time constraint! The game was supposed to be about surviving a night on your own, by crafting your own fireplace, shelter and some basic tools from the collected items.
@notime4games Haha, AZPHINCTA! It was probably this bird: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/$163316/aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa @derek-volker bees are head to head with the birds in regards to the most annoying sound caused. Hopefully no one started the game with headphones set to 100% volume. @mutuware By the brown dog, which starts with you in the camp? You shouldn't have attacked it with the stick. :)
Late recipes be like: Snap 2019-10-07 at 17.31.56.png You guys have got so much content in. Funny how such a simple mechanic of just attaching nodes with correct types together can be this addicting. It would be cool to not be able to place one node on another and start with a limited space, which we can only upgrade by buying it for enough money.
It gets better the more you practise. I myself had a habit to overdesign Ludum Dare games, which I've finished with maybe half of the total planned features. The key is to aim for a simpliest playable version of the game. If you don't see yourself making it in just one day, then it's a good idea to rethink the design. This way on the second day you have a playable game, and you can work on nice to haves. Still, it's a solid robot designer :).
It's a great game for your first entry. Camera could be moved a little further away to make the player know where he is and where to go around the level, but there are lots of weapons, battle animations and you've even added leveling. Well done, and welcome to the Ludum Dare community :).
For some reason it is running at about 1 frame per 2 seconds here, what makes it unplayable. (Windows 10)
Well done, was fun to play. Like others mentioned, corner fort is the meta :). Snap 2019-10-07 at 14.13.28.png
Slimy Situation.png
Congratulations on your first Ludum Dare game! The font could be more easy to read, but it's short and fun. Well done. :)
Congratulations on your first Ludum Dare entry and welcome to the community! You've made an interesting engine selection. Windows forms make it feel like it is a good old windows 95 game.
Is it your first Ludum Dare entry? If so congratulations on finishing it and welcome to the community!
Unpopular opinion: I liked the fact that the puzzle is not known on the start, and that you have to go around the level to think what you have to do to pass it. It's overall a solid puzzle game.
You could make a multiplayer .io game out of this :).
