LD45 — Start with nothing

BlockBeat by voxelv 2019-10-07T13:40:33Z

Good idea and fun to play at first. But 2 out of 3 tries the game doesn't recognize the shape is correct and I had to skip it even if it was completed. Not sure why, if there are some tricks (some cube hard to see so I thought it was completed but it was not) or if the validation is broken. Still the result is unfortunately that it feels a bit frustrating.

Nothing Box by guckstift 2019-10-10T19:21:30Z

Same as @shrapx I cannot get past that oversized axe. 😫

Nothing Box by guckstift 2019-10-10T19:52:05Z

Right, with Edge it works. Pretty good game past that bug. Clever use of the theme; I had a similar idea, with a very different result, but I love to see that I am not alone :v: Pretty good graphics and music for a 48h compo. Congrats!

Amor Fati by starvingindie 2019-10-07T20:43:20Z

Very good mood and polish, attention to details (that itch.io theme matching the game's is rad). Good introduction and storytelling, but the game was too short once you realized you can spam LMB to get through it.

Kudos on the non-violent theme. 👍

PS: I thought we cannot use external audio in Compo and have to make it from scratch?

Amor Fati by starvingindie 2019-10-07T21:03:55Z

@starvingindie Oh sorry! I looked at the website too quickly, I though it said "Royalty free music for creators" as in this was a database of free music. I didn't realize it was an app! Sorry about that, and thanks for correcting me, I will have a look at it that looks useful :)

Trashwars by pestodesign 2019-10-08T22:48:26Z

Very solid overall entry, with decent everything, including title screen. I missed the instructions in the separate image instead of inside the game, and with not-so-intuitive key mapping couldn't figure out how to do anything during almost the entire first game. Otherwise I liked it quite a lot, except for some phases where CPU has a slight time advantage and both sides spam some Sexy, resulting in the CPU accumulating points since they collide always on my side and have same power. That results in a possible situation where the game gets rigged unless the attacker stops spamming.

Bartered by Aycan 2019-10-07T21:00:02Z

@mathstr0fficial summarized it pretty well, it feels like a waste to have such a good polish on a compo entry with graphics and gameplay depth, and fall short on move speed and a somewhat confusing UI. The universal "trade UI" is one trader on the left and the other trader on the right; I still don't understand the UI so pressed all possible buttons and got stuck immediately. I am not inclined to visit all shops and design a strategy when the character is slow and I have only 60 seconds :(

The Card Crafter by Grhyll 2019-10-10T20:21:02Z

This is a very good game! Seriously one of the best entries I rated so far. The game is a bit easy, so would need rebalancing, and of course audio, but otherwise it's a solid game with good mechanics, that really shows some potential to be developed into something really amazing. Congratulations, really! You're much too hard on yourself, this is an awesome entry!

The Card Crafter by Grhyll 2019-10-10T21:41:35Z

Am I doing this right? 😁 (too bad there's no save button, I'll stop here...)

The Card Crafter by Grhyll 2019-10-11T21:13:06Z

@grhyll that proves the game has good balance since there are different strategies to progress!

The only think I'd change to make it a bit less easy is to remove **one** of: - Mana regenerate per turn - Can use each minion once per turn (change to once per fight instead) - Minions death is not permanent (change to permadeath, but that makes the game much more difficult probably) - Player and minions do not attack at full attack level all adjacent cases, but instead for example lose in attack for the turn the defense of the enemy they kill, so that a 30 attack can kill 3 enemies with 10 def, but not 4 enemies with 8 (after the third enemy, the player only has (30-3*8)=6 attack left for the turn).

Each has advantages and drawbacks, makes the game a little or a lot harder. :grinning:

The Card Crafter by Grhyll 2019-10-12T08:21:46Z

@grhyll yes minion permadeath can be for a special game mode, not the default one.

Untitled Goop Game by unept 2019-10-08T22:06:34Z

I loved the in-game tutorial (buttons inside the level) and the very cool and unusual sticky effect! Great game and great levels, gets hard pretty fast but very interesting. Some simple background music would have make this even better, although the sound effects are pretty good.

Cemetery Sweep by Locomule 2019-10-10T19:35:16Z

I liked the game mechanics, although it's tough from the start (didn't finish a single level). Audio and graphics were ok. Cool entry!

Paws of Gold by Swen 2019-10-08T22:36:11Z

As already mentioned, skipping dialogs would have been nice. Some background music too. Overall good entry with some interesting concept, but the prices feel too random, like the cat saying that an item's average price is X when the previous day it said 3*X. So the mechanics feel random and it's unclear how to make some good profit, which makes the game drag too much (I stopped at 200, after several days of trade, that was becoming too monotonic).

Acorn Rush by MrPiedPiper 2019-10-08T22:19:16Z

Nice music but the audio effect on moving get annoying fast. I couldn't understand what to do once I collected some acorn, so ended up with a score of 0, which is quite frustrating.

The Runner by Attala 2019-10-07T20:09:46Z

Very cool audio! :) Interesting concept, but in the end it seems this is only based on shear luck, no? So past the wow effect it gets boring quite fast.

The Scout by Griz 2019-10-07T20:37:00Z

That camera motion is... interesting  Cool idea, but I ended up wandering around without really knowing where I was going, until I found the medallion by chance, and gave up on coming back because the character was a bit too slow, and I quickly lost track of directions.

PlainMan by Dvlv 2019-10-07T19:26:50Z

Win10 firefox gets me "abort(114). Build with -s ASSERTIONS=1 for more info"

PlainMan by Dvlv 2019-10-07T19:43:18Z

Pretty fun dialogs and mood, no bugs, top notch developer art. Great entry, congrats! You should maybe have tried different colors for Albert vs. the Narrator dialogs (and others) to make it a bit easier to understand.

Sneeter by bubblewandgames 2019-10-08T21:59:41Z

Very inventive and unexpected entry! Graphics are funny but make the UI a bit confusing with the all-pink color palette and thick borders. Quite fun game at first, although I am not sure if I need to remember the names of all sneeters over rounds or not? Otherwise how can I guess at each round? I mostly played randomly without really understanding what I was doing, which kills the fun after a few rounds of reading the hilarious variations.

Colour Shot by HumphreysMedia 2019-10-10T19:56:33Z

Very good entry which really lack only by the absence of music! Otherwise pretty well polished for a compo entry, I'm quite impressed, congrats!

Life to Live by tab1bit0 2019-10-08T21:19:22Z

Interesting idea, pretty good game if not for the missing audio. Quite hard and somewhat creepy though.

Witch's Cauldron by Kazatan 2019-10-07T20:25:30Z

I got the frogs, but couldn't understand anything else. Got killed by dragons (?) but I am supposed to collect their scales, how? Good overall idea, descent music and graphics, but couldn't understand the game so not much fun unfortunately.

Global Warming Is Coming by Odeyalko 2019-10-10T20:02:49Z

Interesting and ambitious idea! I liked the idle (?) animation on the axe while I was trying to figure out how to build that raft. A tiny bit confusing to find the axe and build. Would have been even better with audio, even a very simple background sound. Congrats on the entry!

14 billion years by Vhalenn 2019-10-07T19:25:08Z

Quite interesting but becomes very laggy around 3rd level. The audio SFX is good, but the background audio a bit too "intense", although I guess it gives to the atmosphere. Couldn't really get past level 3 unfortunately so a bit frustrating I had to stop before the browser crashed :(

14 billion years by Vhalenn 2019-10-07T20:45:04Z

Ok yeah that's understandable. I only try web games though ;)

Blank Page Syndrome by okkolobr 2019-10-07T20:13:17Z

I have no idea what is going on. Am I controlling that pale yellow thing over a white background? I can't see anything unfortunately. Things are happening and I can't make sense of them :(

Click-N-Move by TwinTurboDouche 2019-10-07T20:03:18Z

That is a pretty fun game, congrats! A bit difficult at start, and a bit too easy in the middle, but getting a good balance eventually around 100k! Damn robots are tough... Audio is a bit repetitive and sfx is basic (except the damage one, high quality!), although it gets the job done.

Escape Room by superunknown 2019-10-10T19:52:20Z

Pretty good idea, and very clever use of the light-as-blocker to balance the reward it gives. Nice touch with the background music and sfx, missing on a lot of entries unfortunately.

There is more by jakiteli 2019-10-07T20:20:44Z

There were very good ideas, it's a shame this was so short. Maybe missing some very simple background audio. Overall pretty consistent, nice platformer. Did you realize the LMB platform can be moved at will between jumps, so basically ruins the level since you can access anywhere with it? :grinning:

Polterheist by Cral 2019-10-08T21:38:37Z

Very good entry, loved the dialogs and the humour. Movements are a bit slow, as you tend to go back and forth to find the right trigger. Music and graphics are quite good quality. Overall quite enjoyed playing! Congrats

The Desert of Nothingness by Douwe_Ravers 2019-10-10T19:31:16Z

This is a very good idea, but hard to grasp at first, and pretty hard to play from the start.

Pros: - Good game mechanics - Decently usable UI

Cons: - Lack of music/sfx - A bit hard at the beginning, could have slowed down the timer to start - Lack of explanation of the selling system

Congrats on the first entry! 👍

In the beginning by djee 2019-10-07T13:37:51Z

Thanks @voxelv!

The glitchy lines your are talking about are I assume when the resolution is not 1024x768. I tried all I could on the PC build to set the Unity player settings + force in code, but sometimes it still starts in fullscreen and ruins the pixel-perfect camera. Better play on itch.io, there should be no issue there.

For the rest, all valid points, mostly from lack of experience and resulting waste of time, and so lack of time to polish. Some levels can be failed, but overall it's quite simple. Turns out  designing puzzle problems is hard!

In the beginning by djee 2019-10-07T20:48:55Z

Thanks everyone!

I did chose the zoom level semi-consciously to compensate for the lack of complexity in the puzzle, so you have to remember what you saw to solve. If you see the entire puzzle at once, I think it becomes overly easy, especially the level with the exit at the beginning whose path on purpose wanders away from the camera so you have to remember. If you see that one, there's no more challenge.

In the beginning by djee 2019-10-08T19:39:51Z

Thanks @griz, yes this is my first entry! Glad I am not the only one to like my zoom choice

In the beginning by djee 2019-10-10T18:51:50Z

Thanks everyone! 😊

I really enjoyed this first jam :v:

In the beginning by djee 2019-10-11T21:06:00Z

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

@humphreysmedia you can restart via the menu, it's mapped to the START button on an Xbox 360 controller or the PAUSE key on a keyboard. Sorry that this was not clear.

@grhyll yes I know that error, not sure why it happens, this only occurs on the HTML5 build. I'm not too familiar about the WebGL support in Unity, maybe I am doing something that doesn't work for it (but otherwise work on PC and inside the Editor).

In the beginning by djee 2019-10-15T19:13:07Z

Thanks @humphreysmedia but I'm afraid you forgot to paste the link 😉

Caravan Wars by LeGoLaZ 2019-10-08T21:48:57Z

Interesting concept. Took a few tries to understand how to play. It's lacking some audio, which would have helped understand the gameplay I think. Otherwise pretty solid mechanics, not that easy. Nice :v:

Cascade by Goldenglade 2019-10-08T22:15:17Z

Doesn't work with Firefox nor Edge. Chrome was ok. Pretty interesting concept and nice graphics, but the single-sound effect makes the gameplay a bit confusing, as the dodge animation is fast (as expected) so it's not always clear if you hit or got hit. Would also have benefited from some form of background music. Game is hard without being unforgiving, good balance.

Chevalchemy: A Hoof of Concept by xlambein 2021-10-07T22:22:59Z

Very good idea, and very neat execution, congrats! I particularly like the fine physics controls allowing very precise movements... or just to kick ingredients you don't need in orbit.

1THRUSTR.EXE by verysoftwares 2021-10-06T19:54:36Z

I don't understand how to play, sorry. I'm just getting close to the nuke, some line appear, and nothing else happens.

Sir BaLancelot by FabDynamic 2021-10-06T20:06:20Z

171.79, this game is VERY good!

Libra City by djee 2021-10-04T11:10:46Z

0.1.2 release on GitHub is the final one released for Compo. Somehow the ZIP file was not showing up anymore today in Assets, and the GitHub upload page was showing an error. Re-uploaded just now (no change), and this should be fixed.

Libra City by djee 2021-10-04T16:57:31Z

Thanks for playing! The UI in Bevy gave me a headache, so I had planned to put those instructions on screen but had to fallback to the LD page instead. Well, next time I'll know. :)

Libra City by djee 2021-10-07T22:09:47Z

Thanks everyone! Yes this is pretty short, for lack of me following my own advice never to learn a new engine during a Jam... But hey at least I've got plenty out of it for next time! I had more ideas of game mechanics to make things more complex, which adds potential for a lot more levels. Maybe I'll find some motivation and add them post-Jam.

Libra City by djee 2021-10-07T22:21:57Z

Ooohh @fabdynamic you made Sir BaLancelot?! That's so far my best game for this LD49!!!! ❤❤❤ And I just tried Chevalchemy, it's also excellent, one of my top 3 direct @xlambein :)
