Video Games Are My Life by Martin Vilcans 2016-12-15T21:16:00
The mood is amazing, but I find platformers very frustrating, so I didn't finish it. Still, it's one of the best games of this LD!

The mood is amazing, but I find platformers very frustrating, so I didn't finish it. Still, it's one of the best games of this LD!
The basic idea seems very cool :) If you ever finish it, I'd love to see the final result.
Very pretty game, I liked the music too and it was fun to play!
A few things could've been explained better: the fact that to go down you need to press down + jump, and the fact that all the enemies need to be killed in order to open the doors (I was blocked in a level and I thought it was a bug :P).
Also, I felt like there wasn't much of a "sacrifice" to make, since we never really had a choice not to take the power-up, and we didn't know what the effect would be beforehand.
Loved the atmosphere! I really got into it at some point, getting vibes of Alien-type movies. I was scared of running into whatever that thing was...
Loved the style and the general mood! But I suck terribly at platformers, so it was quite a frustrating experience to get to the end! (and yes, I know, I made a platformer myself :P) It was interesting to see someone else do something similar to what I did in my game :-)
Very original game, I love the idea!
The game is really cute, and I like the music. Together they work to create a very interesting mood. That said, I found the game a bit boring because of how slow it was, and how little there is to do. I was often pressing the Space key just because I _wanted_ it to do something :P
Really an amazing game, the best I've played so far! I just wish the levels were less random: I played the 3rd one multiple times until I got lucky enough to succeed.
Extra creepy game, I loved it! I think the sacrifice mechanic could have been pushed a bit further. Here it was fairly easy to make the choice, because the powerups were really numerous.
I think I found a bug: when I tried to play a second time after reaching the end, I couldn't move anymore. I had to restart the game in order to play again.
@oxrock Thanks for the feedback! I tried to make a packaged game with stuff like py2exe but I couldn't get it to work :/ Next time I should make the game in JS but I'm not familiar with it.
@dunin Yup I tried that, but I can't get cx_Freeze to work on my machine.
@thomas-lacroix Merci beaucoup ! And thanks so much for the venv bash code, I added it to the description.
@dunin Wow, thanks so much! This makes me really happy!
Yep I realized today that you could get to the part that says you lost the jump while still having it..... I didn't have a lot of time to playtest it over the week-end, and there's a lot of possible combinations :P
Also, I don't think you're spoiling any more than what I say in the description, so it's fine! :-)
@frank-gevaerts Thanks for the feedback! Yep the game can be tricky at some points, I have some ideas in mind to make it easier to explore the tree of possible sacrifice choices
@mordokay I'm glad you enjoyed the game! I tried to have a few silly sacrifices, I'm happy to hear one of them got a laugh out of you!
@rickyhan I'm thinking of making that game into something a bit bigger (and in the browser). Do you have any suggestions of how I could improve the gameplay?
@jezzamon Thanks for your feedback! Yep the game gets pretty hard at the end. If I'd had another day, I would've worked on balancing it more. I also completely agree with you on the sound and the hitbox of the player. Those are two things that I wanted to add/change, but didn't get around to doing. I actually finished the game a few minutes before the LDJam deadline, so in many ways it has rough edges!
A fun game, though I'm not sure I understand how it fits the theme. Still, it was nice to play!
Few bugs: - you can leave on the left in the first level by "climbing" on the side of the screen. - it's possible to fall in the "toxic waste" such that you get stuck there and get hurt repeatedly in a loop without dying - I think the end screen doesn't work for me (see image below)
Screenshot from 2018-12-03 17-47-01.png
I'm not sure exactly what I need to do, and how to win the game? I just click in places and wait for my ship to fire, and when I reach the 5th stage, I always die because I don't have enough health.
Great game, I loved the uneasy mood you managed to give it. The sound design helps a great deal with that! (question: is the sound of the fast-moving monsters you chewing cereals? :P)
Very pretty game, I love the general mood and the graphics. The concept is also interesting, I haven't seen anything like it. Overall I really enjoyed it. The only negative point is that there wasn't a lot to do, and it was fairly repetitive.
Like Morricore, I love the concept. The controls aren't clear at first, but I figured it out pretty fast. The intro is too long for re-playability, tho.
Pretty fun game, I loved the music, it really created a great mood. I've said that in a another game review, but I feel like the "sacrifice" concept works better if there's a choice and trade-off. Still, it does fit the theme perfectly :-)
I got to 65! This game is the most fun I've played so far. Only improvement I'm thinking of is to have a way to know which ball has been in the circle the longest.
Fun game overall! I like how gruesome it is :P A few difficult points I encountered:
- The UI is not informative enough: it's not clear how many buildings of each type you should build, what their exact effects are, what your production of various resources is, and so on. I'm not entirely sure how the houses work yet. - I got a "Health 10" sacrifice, but I never saw health shown as a number anywhere else. Is 10 a lot, or very little? - Sacrifices like "Age 10" are very hard to meet, because people age as you carry them. But maybe that's just the game being hard :P
The game is pretty, and the concept interesting, but its rough edges make it a bit difficult to enjoy. I won't repeat what others have said, but I will add that it was a bit clumsy to have one click to move and another one to collect resources (as opposed to games like Warcraft, that use right click for both).
I often find platformers frustrating, so maybe I'm not the best judge for your game :P It's pretty nice, though I found myself screaming at the shape of the hitboxes more than I like. I loved the bits of humour!
Also: it's not always clear what is part of the background and what isn't.
I think other people covered the issues in this game pretty thoroughly. I'd just like to say: congrats on this little game, it's a lot better than what _my_ first LDJam was. As @gamefive said, I'm looking forward to the next one :-)
Pretty fun game! Really original too, I have never seen the concept anywhere.
The game is fun, but like @joror I didn't even reach the end of level 1 :P I'm pretty terrible at it.
Also, I would say that the audio gets a bit repetitive and tiring after a while.
This is much better than when I tried to make a LD game in Rust! :P It looks pretty and the gameplay is fine, though as you said it could've used more time.
@thomas-lacroix I didn't post it here because it was barely a game :P It's on GitHub tho: https://github.com/xlambein/ldjam42/
I like the concept! It's a bit buggy, unfortunately: at the third level the enemies no longer spawn. Also, it would've been nice to have some visual feedback when you hit an enemy. Besides that, it's really nice!
Very meta, I loved that :D The style was pretty and the concept was interesting. It just could've been a bit more fun/challenging.
The game is pretty nice, I liked the graphics and it was fun to play! However, the main original features (the fatigue) had no impact on my decisions. I completely ignored it, and it never went beyond 60%.
Another remark: it's hard to see the difference between an empty slot and a slot with a wooden sword.
The game is overall quite fun, with an interesting concept. It's really impressive that you managed to do that in just a week-end! Are you planning to release it as a full game? I think there's potential :-)
I have a few comments:
- In my first playthrough, I jumped with the slaves down the pit on the right of the start of the first mine, and everyone died. There's no way to know that there are spikes down that pit. This is especially frustrating because you can't just "restart" the level (you can, but you lose time and resources). - At some point in the first mine, I got the slaves up a lift and realized too late that I had sent them back to the start of the level, which made me lose something like a minute or two. This is quite frustrating. - It took me a long time to manage to get the slaves through this opening, because if you are too close to the wall when you jump it doesn't let you through, and if the lift is too high you can't pass:
Screenshot from 2019-05-05 11-59-00.png
- (just being picky now) pressing E and D at the same time is a bit cumbersome :P!
Just a simple, well-made game. It's easy to learn and really enjoyable.
Nice game! I just wish there was a bit more to do while the wave is happening, once you've finished building your towers.
I loved the mood and the graphics of this game. I love minimalism done right, and this is definitely a great example of that. The main downside for me is that I found the game a bit repetitive pretty fast.
Hey! Your game seems awesome and I really wanna play it. Unfortunately, when I run `tsc`, I get the following error:
```error TS5023: Unknown compiler option 'types'.```
Nice game. Not that hard, I thought. I only had to restart once. Maybe I was just lucky?
Pretty cool game. I agree with yall, the theme really sucked, and it's cool to see that you made a nice game anyway. The concept is quite original, I could see it becoming a nice game outside of the jam if you added a bunch of levels.
One thing that frustrates me is the hitbox when sucking projectiles. I often get hit when I thought I would just absorb it.
The game looks cool, but I couldn't get it to work correctly on Linux. When I launch it, I get the main menu, but when I start the game, it fades to black, music start, and then it never fades to the actual game.
I like the idea of making a board game on the computer like that, it's not something that I've ever seen in a game jam. The graphics make the experience quite "real" too, so good job on that. Unfortunately, I felt the game was quite boring. It's mostly random, which I don't really enjoy, and when played alone, it feels weird to have the bots' turn take that long. Still, the game looks good and is really well done overall!
Nice entry, the story made me laugh :P
I found the camera a bit annoying, I often jumped just to move it up a little, so I could see what was there. I think it should just center on the character. Also the jump sometimes didn't work, I'm not sure why (or when, sorry for the completely unhelpful bug report :D)
The monster bodies just staying around are pretty fun, I feel like maybe you could do something with that, e.g. use them to activate a pressure plate or something.
Nice little game, it's quite an original idea :-) One thing I can think of to improve it visually is to plot a graph of the exchange rate. It would look pretty cool (at least to people who think graphs are cool :P)
I usually don't like turned-based strategy too much, but this game was really fun to play! Also, pretty hard :D
Pretty cool game, it matches the theme really well :-). One improvement could be to add an arrow that points to the remaining enemies, so we don't lose time walking around the map looking for the last remaining foe :P
Very cool game, the graphics are pretty and it's fun to play. A few things (that other people mostly said already):
- it's quite long and boring to kill the enemies with the first gun when they are floating above the player's height - I got hit too easily by the spikes - shooting with the mouse feels a bit cumbersome when there isn't really any aiming (I'm playing with a trackpad on a laptop). it could be nice to have the option to shoot with the space bar or something.
You said this was "only level one", so I'm looking forward to the rest!
Fun little game! I love the sound design on this one, especially the music. The gameplay is simple but fun, and the experience is made more interesting by things like placing golden nuggets right next to some lava, or shaking the screen (that was really cool too see the first time!)
My main issue with the game is that it's quite buggy. I imagine you're aware of most bugs already, but I wrote down what I observed:
- When trying to turn, if I don't release the LEFT key before pressing the RIGHT key, the character just stops and doesn't move right. Same for the opposite direction. - When starting again after dying, it seems like the music is duplicated, as if I could still hear the music from the previous game while the new one is playing. Another music is layered every time I die and start again, meaning that after 3-4 games it's just distorted noise, and I have to refresh the page. - When you die, the character just pops back above, before showing the game over screen. It's not really a problem, it's just a bit weird to see :P - The intro screen music doesn't play the first time you play the game. - Collisions seem weird at times, I clipped through a platform on a few occasions, and I think the lava hitbox is a bit too wide.
I played the game on Chrome.
Another little detail that bothered me (sorry! 😅) is that the character sprite seems to have a different resolution than the platforms? Makes the graphics look a bit strange.
Still, I had a nice time playing! Thanks for the game :-)
A bit hard to understand what to do at first, could use some instructions. The graphics are pretty, I love the designs of the fishes! Though I could see the seam of some sprites, unfortunately.
I couldn't manage to take a picture of the Eel, and so the max. money I got was 450 pounds. Because of that, I couldn't get any deeper and explore the rest.
If you have time to help with that, I'd be happy to review the game again later :-)
Thanks for the nice comments everyone! Didn't expect a game that's basically a rip-off of a classic combined with an activity that we all begrudgingly do sometimes when browsing to get this positive feedback :D
@etdofresh Thanks! :-) I worked as a data scientist for two years myself, quit recently to go back into dev. This game is a tribute to my old team :D
Thanks for the kind comments everyone! 😊 Very happy you're finding my game funny and/or enjoyable :D
@tezza48 Hey! Unfortunately, I finished pretty late and didn't have time to add different controls, I'm sorry! Thanks for checking it out tho!
Nice game, I like the general mood, and the graphics are lovely. I can't make up my mind on whether it would've been better with music, or whether having just silence works best for a marine exploration game like that.
The controls were a bit clunky at times. Rotation is very slow, as is the upwards direction/brakes, whereas the left/right movements are quite fast!
A pleasant experience overall!
screenshot.png
I've seen several games with a similar concept, but this one stands out to me because of the movement mechanics! It's really fun to throw the submarine around like it's a rock in a slingshot :D (Incidentally, I made a game with a similar mechanic two years ago for LD)
I also liked that the gameplay was slightly forgiving, e.g. you don't lose if you barely hit something, which made the experience a lot more fun.
Great job overall! Thanks for the game :-)
screenshot.png
Fun little puzzle game! I especially like the strategic aspect of having to move rocks to the front of the drill if you want to be able to go further. Because of that, I also felt like rocks were often more valuable than gemstones :P and also, it made the bombs kind-of harmful, instead of being a help.
Also, it was difficult to understand what some of the upgrades did. Still not sure what the scanners are for, or how bombs are supposed to be triggered.
The graphics are simple but they work very well and have a nice polish that most compo games lack (mine included :D)
I do have sound effects on my platform (Linux 5.10.30-1-MANJARO), and they sound nice! Would've been cool to have a drill sound effect, too. I also like the music, though it gets a bit repetitive after a while.
Great game!
I have a slight headache but it was worth it :D this is a really cool idea! Took me a while to get my eyes to relax enough to see the pebble (never been good at those things), and then a bit more time to really start seeing the slits. Once I got there though, it was really cool and impressive! Definitely one of the most surprising and interesting entry I've seen. Makes me want to experiment with this in future games myself
I'm dying of laughter here, this is insane 😂 my favourite entry so far, very original, completely bonkers and extremely fun! Not sure my physics teachers at uni would've approved tho :P
I like the concept of a kind of "Carcassonne rogue-like", and the idea of having the tiles play a double role of making a path or being used for combat is cool! It was a bit strange though, to have my hand change at random at each turn. I think it would've been more interesting to have to manage your tiles through several turns 🤔
I love the graphics and the music, by the way! The general mood is just great 😊
@solah Ohhh I didn't get that 😅 makes a lot more sense, that's a pretty interesting mechanic!
I like the concept! It took me a minute or so to understand what I needed to do 😅 but I like the minimalist, slightly cryptic description, and explaining more details would sort-of ruin that. I'm also very fond of the art and the whole general mood of the game. This is a well-crafted little experience 😊
Just a small thing that bothered me: the character doesn't move exactly on the grid, and it makes the hitbox unpredictable, which hurts the experience.
Love the game! The concept is fun and there's a good amount of content (haven't managed to see it all yet). I like the idea of expending the map horizontally the further you go down. The graphics are simple but they work well, and I looooove the sound design.
My main pain point are the controls. (On the web at least) they're not super responsive, which makes it hard to e.g. jump and then dig above. The character isn't always easy to control, I often run into enemies without meaning to, and since the hitbox is quite big, I end up taking a lot of damage because of that.
Overall one of my favourite entries so far :-)
Nice little game! I'm especially fond of the audio, both the music and the DRAMATIC PIANO :D
I was a bit frustrated at times, with the fish being either too fast (when I want to stand still) or too slow (when a Starbucks cup suddenly appears, moving at Mach 1).
Weird concept :D I dig it. I added a few words, I'm curious to see what it'll look like in a couple of weeks
Daaaamn, really impressive little game, especially done over the course of 10 hours! I've never used Pico-8, but I'm always amazed by the cool stuff people can do with it. I should try it out!
I love the graphics and the sound design, it looks very polished overall. Would love to play this against my friends :D Took me a while to get used to the controls tho, I kept pressing left/right to move. Also my main issue with games like this kind of shooting mechanic is that I find it hard to aim reliably when using anything else than the max power. I wonder what UX solution could be done about this?
Thaaanks for the nice game :P
Really cool idea, and pretty well done! I must admit that even after a few games I couldn't totally grasp the nature of the controls, why sometimes I could move and sometimes not, and when exactly the arm would indeed follow my mouse. Maybe some more work needed to perfect the controls, and then you'd have a truly awesome game 🤩
Nice job on the graphics! The game was fairly easy once I realised that I was essentially invincible when spamming the dash keys :D I felt like the mouse motions were a bit slow, could've been nice to be able to adjust mouse sensitivity.
Screenshot from 2021-10-07 11-54-26.png Did I win? :D
This is disturbing and very cool, love the mood, graphics and music. Would love to see this idea expanded upon! Also kinda reminds me of Enemy (2013) by Denis Villeneuve. Wouldn't recommend if you don't like big spiders :>
Thanks everyone, I'm glad you enjoyed playing! 😊 Yeah I wanted to add sound effects, and maybe music, but I finished Sunday twenty minutes before the deadline 😅 If I decide to keep working on it, that'll definitely be in my priorities!
I like the mood, art and sound design a lot! And the gun feels pretty nice to shoot :>
As others have said, the elevators are a bit slow. Also, I was very confused about where the enemies would come from, and what I needed to do about that. Ended up constantly shooting everywhere, hoping that I would hit something as it spawned, which was a bit weird.
I *love* this game, this is excellent and 100% my vibe :D I absolutely dig the retro aesthetics & the humour of this, and the gameplay & level design are great. This is my favourite entry so far.
If I had one remark, it's that I'm often frustrated when I have to restart a level because of one mistake. I love the "undo" feature in Baba Is You, and I feel like it would make this game slightly less frustrating at times.
Had a lot of fun playing this one. The controls feel great, the game is challenging but enjoyable, the music and sound design are great! The main thing that bothered me was that it was often hard to see how far a given platform was gonna be, but I don't know how I would address this issue.
This was a nice little game :-) Good job on the graphics and the music, they set a really nice mood!
Really funny entry, I had a good laugh while playing :D Great job on the voice acting too! I found the gameplay frustrating, which I know is the point, but I think it might have been more fun if the "hard controls" felt less random/more predictable?
It's a fun idea, though a bit frustrating, which---I know---is the point 😅
As a lot of people have said, I liked the graphics, audio and general mood a lot! But unfortunately I just really couldn't get into the game. The rules were hard to grasp, I found it difficult to understand the point of some of the gameplay mechanics, and the extremely random nature of the game made it a lot less fun for me.
Ohh I like the concept, too bad the game is pretty short. Would love to see more levels!
Loved the general mood & graphics! And great job on the level design :-)
The concept is cool, but I think it could be made more interesting. Most of the time, it's clear what you have to do: just draw a line and continue. With more puzzles, it would be great!
This was so much fun! Hard enough to be challenging, but not so much that I couldn't finish it, eventually :D It's a really interesting control scheme. Great job!
On Linux, I couldn't hear any audio, is that normal? I've had audio issues with Bevy in the past, so much so that I usually just remove the feature from the compilation.
Also, R to restart didn't do anything for me.
This is a cool proof-of-concept, would love to see it expanded with more levels! The mechanic is pretty interesting.
The controls were a bit awkward, would've been better for jump to be on up arrow, so I could play with both keyboard and mouse together.
I just love a good idea well done, and this game is exactly that. Excellent job! This was a lot of fun to play :-) wish I could've played more but the repeated clicking was risking to trigger my RSI 😅
Did you make the sound effects and music by the way? They're really good, but I don't see a rating option for them.
Cool idea :0 when I saw a `dup` command I thought this was a weird flavour of Forth, but nope.
I don't really have new things to say about it: would be great to have some docs and more explanations :D Still, there's something fun about tinkering around and trying to figure out how things work. Kinda like poking around at a library or system you don't know, trying to reverse-engineer it.
A nice entry overall :>
I like the concept, it's very original :] Unfortunately, I feel like it's not very well balanced. Typing the words takes way too much time, even though I'm a comfortable touch-typer. Beyond 300m I never have the time to type real words, I just alternate between keymashing to move right and enter to go back all the way to the left.
My favourite part is the general mood and design of the game. I think you absolutely nailed that :]
Best score was 1368m.
Overall I found the game to have interesting potential, but it's a bit complex and confusing to play. Would've been cool to maybe scope down a little, and add some extra polish :]
Here are a few notes I took while playtesting:
- Got a bug where after talking to a client, the little speech bubble stayed open and the controls got stuck. Had to restart the game. - Would've been nice if the difficulty of mini games correlated with the quantity/rarity of resources you got from them. For example, in the beehive game, you would get better stuff when the beehive is moving faster - Having to go up and down the stairs get tiring quickly :P Would be nice if we could buy an elevator or something. - The brewing interface is a bit annoying. I feel like it would be nicer there was a single click to add an ingredient. - Would be nice to see the stats of an ingredient from the brewing interface. - The rewards from the quests do not seem worth it. - Some menus can be closed by hitting the same key (e.g. C for cauldron), while others only allow ESC. Would be nice to have consistency. - In the inventory, the potion stats are very tiny and hard to read. It would be useful to have a way to see them big, like right after brewing. - I've tried a bunch to get a client to accept a potion, but I never could get its taste right. This game is hard!
Very cool game! I got 3:34 on my second attempt.
Not much to say about it, the experience is very tight, the humor works. If anything needs improving, I would add a few more monster sprites for diversity, and also a way to skip dialogs with the same keys as used for playing the game. But I'm just nitpicking!
Also I loved the extra touch of letting the player customize their legs :D
I loved the graphics, music and general mood. The game was frustrating to play, however. The biggest issue was difficulty: the enemies are almost impossible to dodge. On my first playthrough, I didn't even realize they were announced by a sound effect, until the 3rd attack. Some visual indicator would go a long way, for accessibility as well. I also found the jump unnecessary beyond the first minute or so, which is just strange. The game felt quite slow, which can be fine, but the limited controls and the difficulty makes it hard to want to replay.
Didn't manage to play it :sweat_smile: the pattern was never visible for me
Yay! Another game about herding sheep :D It looks nice, and I think you nailed the feel of the herd. The controls work well, too. My main issue was performance: I had regular massive slowdowns on Chrome.
Love the music too, and the quack at the end made me laugh.
The magnet physics were cool! Makes for an interesting challenge as you upgrade the speed. Got the treasure at day 6 :>
Just played through the whole thing, it wasn't as hard as I'd feared :D Definitely one of my fave entries so far. It's an original idea well executed. The graphics are simple but effective, and the controls are easy to pick up.
I did face a couple of bugs: twice I had some earlier connections deleted while I was busy building a constellation. And also a few times I tried to delete a connection but the button wouldn't show up, while other times the button would appear way too close to a star and I would end up deleting an existing connection I wanted to keep.
The music is nice, but it's a bit much and repetitive after a few minutes. Overall it doesn't quite fit the rest of the game IMO. I would expect something less busy and more chill for a game about stargazing.
This was a lot of fun. I played three games, but couldn't get my time below ~3600s. What's your strategy? :D
Great idea, well executed. Fun and short, funny at times. All I want from a compo game!
Finally got around to trying it out, it's fun to play a game with a similar concept to mine! I loved the graphics and general mood of the game, and the sound design made it quite fun. Definitely wish my game had this level of polish :>
I loved the style and music, but I found the game way too easy, so I'm wondering if I had a bug? The random events didn't really affect me noticeably, and I basically just captured tiles one after the other until I won. Not really sure what some of the resources were for :sweat_smile:
Kind-of love the derpy arrows, I don't even understand what they're doing :D I also like the graphics style, it's not very advanced but it does the job. Got three different endings :]
I love that explanation. I think your strategy to move on when you can't get something to work is exactly right. No time to waste, got a game to ship :D And often these weird things add a sort of game jam charm to the project, like here with your arrows.
The game looks great, and I love the music and sound design. Unfortunately, I find it a bit buggy. I just had to end a run because, after clicking on a card to attack, it swapped that card with a new one instead of using it.
Definitely worth a few bugfixes and some extra content, if you feel like spending more time on it after the weekend :]
Fun little game :D My only pain point was the collision box of the houses that are bigger than their sprites.
