Things are going swimmingly! And by that, I mean I suspect my crew are swimming. 💦💦💦 2021-04-25_184729_834107371.png

It could really use some guidance regarding how to make a halfway-passable or basic submarine, like an example build. On my second try I managed to get something that could kind of wiggle its way down to 134m. The physics are pretty funny though. It has a "oh god, look at it fall apart" charm kind of like one of my favorite board games, Galaxy Trucker.

oadt 2021-04-26 07:27

@mduo13 These are the kind of vehicles I built the game for  Thanks for your advice, I added some suggestions in the description  Just have to figure out if there is a better way to embed the screenshots them

mduo13 2021-04-26 07:46

@OadT The updated post is really helpful!

steve-johnstone 2021-04-26 10:29

Ahhh, I love it but I have no idea what I'm doing! Is there a way to rotate the pieces? Also the initial resolution is a bit too small, and I'm on an ultrawide so full-screen isn't really great either o.O

Great job, I love the chaos.

sayuri 2021-04-26 15:27

Watching your submarine fall apart while you are trying to save it was really fun. But there were some rules that only explained after pressing "into the sea" and they forced me to design a new sub.

sinusquell 2021-04-26 19:52

What a neat idea! I couldn't really come up with a properly functioning sub the first few times, though.

axeltherabbit 2021-04-28 12:10

Wow, I really enjoyed making my frankenstein-submarine, it must have been quite hard to code :p

deadmanjw 2021-04-28 12:16

I really dont know how you created this physics sim in the time you got. I am really going to have to look at the source code to see how this works. Great work.

I also agree with previous points i did find the window a little small.

oadt 2021-04-28 18:33

@steve-johnstone unfortunately you can't rotate the pieces, there was not enough time left to implement that. Yeah, I will try to better handle scaling next time

@deadmanjw I am really sorry for the code you have to go through

adam-selker 2021-05-01 03:16

This is hilarious! The physics definitely has some bugs, lots of torques coming from nowhere... still super impressive. I love the damage system, and the general chaos.

fargred 2021-05-01 14:35

Very innovative entry! It was fun making a submarine (in the very broadest sense of the word) and seeing my horrible miscreation tumble downwards into the depths, slowly falling apart. Very cool building system. This would also be awesome to see in an expanded project with more parts and a lively sea!

tanis 2021-05-01 14:57

hahahaha! I had lots of laughs! It took me a while to figure out how to build something that is even half decent to move around. Super good idea, it's a lot of fun!

xlambein 2021-05-01 15:49

I'm dying of laughter here, this is insane 😂 my favourite entry so far, very original, completely bonkers and extremely fun! Not sure my physics teachers at uni would've approved tho :P

cheesepencil 2021-05-01 20:44

I suspect you're going to sweep the innovation category with this one. Fantastic compo entry.

mololo 2021-05-02 05:51

Great idea, fun little game with interesting physics.

Good job.

rolle 2021-05-02 10:42

This was different...in a good way. Also like the loading :duck:!

It took some time with testing to understand how to build something and what (kind of) works. But I guess that was the whole point?

Really liked this game, would love to see more of it. :potable_water:

nuclearredeye 2021-05-02 11:01

Brilliant, great idea and really fun to play around and experiment with various designs. My first sub I built using just the red coil springs and oh my that was an immediate comical failure. After that, with some trial and error I got myself something that worked OK. Overall, great fun and great take on the theme!

thijs-tak 2021-05-02 14:33

This was a very fun entry. I had fun experimenting with the construction. Most subs I made did get very far.

nick-rafalski 2021-05-02 14:51

This is awesome! Once I figured out the purpose of all the parts (and struts/springs) I thought there would be 1 obvious 'best' design, but then I tried your example with the chariot pulling the cockpit and it really works! Got past 200M with it but kinda got stuck on the level geometry. Could probably have gone deeper with better maneuvering. This was so cool!

papaver 2021-05-02 19:35

Interesting concept! I build something and moved it for a bit, but it moved rather slow. It would have been nice to see some visual feedback when I am using a turbine. I tried one of your examples where the cockpit and the turbine are only connected by red coil springs, and that was quite funny! Great entry, well done. :)

nikolay-zapolnov 2021-05-02 20:10

Hey! Thanks for submitting the game for us to play on the stream!

I really enjoyed playing this one, it was extremely fun! It's cool that you can try different configurations of the submarine and have fun with each other!

I missed having bubbles (or any other particle effect) from the engines that were active when I press the button. Sometimes its difficult to remember which buttons are assigned to which side, especially when your submarine is rotating :) Also it would be great to be able to shift submarine in the editor (e.g. having a button to shift left, shift right, etc.) so that it would be easier to edit your submarine.

Great submission! Definitely 5/5 for fun and for theme, at least!

Here is a timed link to the stream: https://youtu.be/vC17EaL3CcI?t=3382

evgeniya-zapolnova 2021-05-02 21:17

It was just pure fun! Cool game, where lose gives pleasure :)

ludrol 2021-05-03 21:45

Cool game, Current was quite annoying but fair challenge. maybe addition of some sonar to tell the player the current would make it less annoying. I liked the style that add more things and it works better. maybe some balancing changes would be helpful so you don't need too mess with force values in the parts.

johnnyjw 2021-05-03 21:59

Fun game. Really innovative with the building your own submarine idea.

mon 2021-05-03 22:05

I think it is a really good idea but unfortunatly I could not get to bild my submarine as it always told me it that the parts had to be in another position

oadt 2021-05-04 15:18

@ludrol Thanks for your feedback! There actually isn't any intended current, what you see is the result of some errors in the way I apply pressure to the walls  Maybe I can fix them in a post-jam version  And yes, I didn't managed to balance the power of the turbines. The problem was that the force is depending on the mass, but I would probably also choose a higher default value by now

@mon Oh, too bad :slight_frown: have you tried one of the suggested builds?

ancooper 2021-05-10 12:49

up.PNG

It was funny

kpded 2021-05-11 17:17

Interesting idea and theme implementation!

Though that was a bit tough to understand controls, the goal of the game and what every equipment does, I had a super fun time playing this game!

It seems like something outside the jam could be made with this mechanics, but it still needs to be polished

hadi-jiwani 2021-05-11 21:54

great game where your logic comes to save you it is pretty interesting how i sat down to check out a few games and i think around 15 mins gone just thinking how to balance the weight it really provides a moment of joy when after tweaking many numbers something what you want happened

ratrat44 2021-05-13 05:34

I love building games such as besiege, so this was quite fun! It's cool how they kinda get dented when hitting things. Here are some things I made https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/628432847723560981/842271988114128916/Ship1.gif https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/628432847723560981/842271997009854464/Ship2.gif The physics are mildly broken.

oadt 2021-05-13 10:21

@ancooper @ratrat44 Thank you both for sharing screenshots/gifs. Very interesting to see for me. Pretty cool ships!

lisichka 2021-05-13 15:19

when I played it I felt like Dr. Frankenstein with a mechanic's education. I like this game!

mhanapole 2021-05-14 05:39

Super interesting and cool concept! I found myself a bit frustrated in trying to figure out how to best construct my sub and subsequently control it effectively, but I can definitely see a player sinking a ton of time into this to figure out the best configuration.

candlesan 2021-05-14 08:11

This is cool - I like the idea of being able to build and then swim around my own little ship. The different physics componnets were cool. I had some trouble figuring out the difference between the black and red strut attachers but I think I got it in the end.

suchista 2021-05-15 11:54

Once I understood what's going on, I had fun :) I like the concept and the clean aestherics. Exploring different builds feels nice.

mysub.png

Btw, I got an error once:

Zrzut1.png

I think it occured when I removed a wall block before removing grey struts attached to it and tried to swim.

ava-skoog 2021-05-15 14:14

So much fun but also so very difficult 😅 Played around for a long time, trying all sorts of stuff, even your suggestions, but I never did manage to reach the bottom. Tricky to control, easy to break, maybe could've been a bit more lenient, but you probably got pretty good at playing while making it so that's always tough to gauge haha. The freedom was great, and remapping was super useful to make all sorts of designs make sense control-wise, good call on that. Just wish it had some goofy music and sounds to really sell it. But I enjoyed it a lot! 😍

ali-azeem 2021-05-16 14:29

Pretty fun game. It was quite confusing to build a submarine but once I made it, it was quite fun to control. It was also pretty funny too like the time when I forgot to connect 2 propellers and they just flew away as soon as I started to control them.

roka-josh 2021-05-16 15:14

This was really fun and ambitious for a ludum dare game, congrats and I would love to see this be developed further!

oddballdave 2021-05-16 19:45

I spent longer than I care to admit building a sub capable of reaching the bottom. It was lots of fun too. My only suggestion is to put a label on each engine with the key that controls it. That would help when the sub tumbles. Great entry overall though.

Good stuff :8ball:

laurari 2021-05-16 20:01

186m on my first try, but OMG this is difficult, it first took me a while to understand that I had to put all parts and my whole way down was rotating xD

I have to say that this font was super hard to read for me, it look like I was drunk or something :beers:

the result is a fun and really different game, so congrats!!

richardk 2021-05-17 09:55

This game was really fun, and it is remarkable how you managed to make this game in a few days. It also reminded me of Kerbal Space Program, since in both games you build a vessel and control it. Overall, this was a really solid game that I want to play again!

kotzi 2021-05-17 12:12

Really cool submission and nice idea. Congrats!

blubberquark 2021-05-18 16:27

I wish there was visual feedback when the propellers spin or something like that...

asdehielo 2021-05-18 18:54

Funny game, it was cool trying different combinations and failing every time x) Feels like it would improve a lot just by having music.

Small suggestion, add a button to clear your ship in the hangar (I may have missed it if it exists)

Good job!

preda 2021-05-18 19:25

It was quite confusing at first but then I had fun building my sub!
