LD48 — Deeper and deeper

drillerROBOT by Yamzho 2021-05-01T02:56:42Z

So polished, nice job =) and the card mechanic is cool! It would be nice to have a little more variety in the cards, maybe? Many, especially the lava-related ones, weren't useful to me. I guess that's the idea, though.

I noticed a few green uranium "cloud" effects lingering after the uranium was gone.

Watery Crave by Zathnic 2021-05-04T06:43:11Z

Excellent game! I love the graphics and the music. Gameplay is super engaging, and a really creative take on a platformer. It's also really hard, a few sections took me 20+ tries and I eventually gave up. But, well, it was engaging enough that I tried 20 times =) The atmosphere is great, with the audio and different mechanics making it clear that you're not supposed to be outside the water.

There's a bug with the inputs, sometimes an arrow key doesn't work. Maybe if you hit e.g. up and right at the same time? I'm not quite sure, but sometimes the inputs are funky. Also, occasionally the bouncy flowers don't bounce me any higher.

Deep Space Journey by aaranos 2021-04-29T03:32:53Z

Pretty easy (for the first 10 planets or so), feels RNG-based. Maybe it would get more interesting as I play and learn what's important? Feels kinda like FTL, but with only the dialog boxes =P

(Also: runs in Firefox, but not in Chromium, for me. But it runs great in Firefox, so hey!)

Bad Night by vknauss 2021-05-02T21:50:16Z

Atmospheric!

The game really slows down if I look up to the horizon, though. (i7 6560u, integrated graphics, 1920x1080 or 3200x1800) So I have to stare at the ground while I drag the body, lol.

Escaping the dogs is _hard_! I keep dying there, and don't want to keep staring at the ground for a few minutes while I try again...

Oumuamua - From Outer Space to Deeper and Deepr Down the Well by Nikolaj 2021-04-29T05:31:45Z

Really fun! The "80% sandbox, 20% game with a goal" feel is interesting. Makes it feel lighthearted, almost joyful, despite having nothing resembling a storyline, lol. I'm super curious how you predict trajectory, wtf kinda math is behind that; first game I've wanted to go look at the source code. Figuring out the physics by trial an error is really fun!

One gripe: if the spacecraft flies off into insterstellar space, I have to reload the page, there's no (obvious) way to selfdestruct and start over.

It runs pretty slowly in Firefox, faster in Chromium.

tetronimo! by gregfagan 2021-05-01T01:08:00Z

Works great in Firefox on Linux here! =)

The shaft by smiley 2021-04-28T06:25:41Z

Lovely visuals and music. Gameplay went from "kinda fun" to "total chaos" when there started to be like six balls at once =) Sound effects make things satisfying. Only gripe is that it's too easy, I made it to level six before I got bored.

Fade by Jeremy Ryan 2021-04-27T03:27:39Z

Pretty music, pretty graphics! Gameplay is fun but _hard_, I couldn't get past the first two-hand bit.

Also, runs in Wine on Linux! But audio doesn't work there.

Graverobber by Daniel Alhadeff 2021-04-29T02:45:07Z

Graphics are lovely! It's dark and hard to see, I assume that's on purpose =P Gameplay definitely punishes you for mistakes, takes some practice. I like the sort of rhythm part of it. Audio, especially the death sound effects, is nasty, in a good way.

(Plus, the Linux build works! =D)

Touchdown by Paul Nadan 2021-04-27T03:45:14Z

Groaning before I even started the game. Well played =)

Gameplay is fun, and a good difficulty lvl. Graphics are satisfying. Whole premise is hilarious.

And it runs in Wine! Nice!

Under Pressure by OadT 2021-05-01T03:16:02Z

This is hilarious! The physics definitely has some bugs, lots of torques coming from nowhere... still super impressive. I love the damage system, and the general chaos.

The Botanist by Tezza48 2021-04-27T03:33:04Z

Satisfying! The gameplay feels nice and fresh, took roughly 1.5 lives to figure out how it works. Graphics and audio are "enough"; minimal and satisfying if not beautiful.

Conspiracy Dive by wizard sino 2021-04-29T06:49:25Z

This was hilarious. I loved the people running out the door, and the "This may not have been a good idea." Puzzles and graphics were OK, but I literally lol'd at "trying hard to be surprised" =)

Pipe Dream by aa4z2 2021-05-01T20:28:41Z

Ooh man, _so close_ to being an awesome game! I love the concept and the core mechanics. There are two things that make it not worth playing, though: * Mis-click once, and your whole pipeline is wasted. Yes, this encourages being careful, but it's still frustrating. Same goes, a little less strongly, for forgetting to put a T-junction in the pipe for later. * Sometimes, the water doesn't seem to flow in the pipes? I'm not sure if this is a bug or just a poorly-explained mechanic, but I'm pretty sure I've lost because a pipe randomly chose not to work. The fast pace makes this a killer. The intro text is great, and I like the music, it sounds nice and bubbly =)

Drill Away by Milan8890 2021-05-01T02:46:31Z

It's hard to see the UI, hangs over the edges of the screen... Cool concept!

Peak Oil by syg 2021-04-28T06:13:09Z

Hi! Is there a working Linux download link? This one 404's...

Peak Oil by syg 2021-04-29T06:16:23Z

Linux build works great! Thank you!

There's an impressive amount here. I feel like, given time, I could really get to _understand_ this game, and milk the oil field for all it's worth.

Like @bmacintosh said, I ended up with no money / no pumps a few times, waiting for prices to spike. It would be nice to e.g. set a threshold above which to auto-sell, because a few times I missed spikes because I didn't move my mouse fast enough. Likewise, would be nice to auto-destroy pumps that fall below some efficiency threshold, like $3 per barrel. Spent a lot of time panning around and checking on my rigs.

More in-game info might be nice, but IMO the annotated screenshots are plenty of info, if I can be bothered to alt-tab over.

On a HiDPI screen (3200x1800), the GUI is really small, and even on a normal screen, the cursor is hard to see. It would be nice to have a big black-and-white cross or something, instead of red on green.

I don't 100% understand pressure and so on? It would be nice to have like a one-paragraph description of the relationship between pressure, depth, pump type, cost per second, and oil per second.

The radar and probe system is really cool. It would be nice for the info to linger, e.g. be displayed on the ground, rather than just have to remember it. It's neat, though, really illustrates the value of information.

In all, this feels like 1/3 game and 2/3 teacher of hard business lessons: opportunity cost, risks, timing, paying attention. Definitely worth playing, thank you.

Where's my dynoMITE? [LD48] by miej 2021-04-29T06:23:59Z

Unfortunately, this barely runs for me... I get like 10fps in Firefox, and it doesn't run at all in Chromium. I'm on Debian Linux. I'd love a Linux build, if that's easy!

EDIT: The Windows executable runs great under Wine! This game is hilarious, it reminds me of phone games circa 2012, like Jelly Car. Physics are spazzy, but never got stuck, partly because I think the heli's hitbox changes when you change direction.

Where's my dynoMITE? [LD48] by miej 2021-04-29T06:55:53Z

@miej It works perfectly, thank you!

Also: "STAHP", lol. Also that the guy dies but it doesn't really do much. To be fair, he was just dangling there already =P

Ponzimulator by AlexisMartineau 2021-05-01T20:39:51Z

Love the concept! Gameplay is a little limited? Am I supposed to ignore the people in the small circle after everything starts expanding?

The intro music is on point, lol.

Lift Your Spirits by mtrc 2021-05-02T22:01:19Z

I love the mechanics! The game is short and not too hard, I'd love these barrels worked into a proper roguelike =P

Deem by AdamPhoebe 2021-04-27T03:56:20Z

Very pretty! Not sure it was working for me, though: the signs don't seem to say anything, and the cave system is really small. Is there something to do other than build? Also, the violin takes a long time; it doesn't say anything, so I kept pressing z to try to stop, which made it last longer.

Music is lovely, graphics are really nice.

WINCH by Gorialis 2021-04-27T03:41:18Z

Very cute! Gameplay felt a bit vanilla, and puzzles (up to the level where you move the barrel-shaped thing to the sensor) felt more like mouse-dexterity challenges =P Some nice graphical touches, like the camera-head following your mouse and being able to see the next levels behind the current one.

The Rabbit Hole Herald by Sam_ONella 2021-04-29T05:19:27Z

Hilarious. Mad libs as a Ludum Dare game. Gameplay is a little repetitive, but it's a short game so hey. This is the only game I've played so far that I wanted to take a screenshot of, because it was so funny.

Game is 104% inspired =)

Roots game by BoClow 2021-04-29T06:39:34Z

Really cute and satisfying! It's super fun to see the branches go off and do their own thing. That and the zoom out at the end are the details that really make this work, for me.

Plus, it runs great in Wine on Linux!

CUBE VS BALL by MrJesse 2021-05-01T01:16:18Z

I like how each round has a distinct trick or pattern to it. It's not just getting better at the game in general, you have to figure out every level.

Graphics are tons of fun, the pulsing is a little much on a big screen. Music is hype!

Also, runs in Wine on Linux, which is nice!

Deeper Bros. Digital Computer by Adam Selker 2021-04-28T06:05:47Z

@greg-the-egg: Sorry about the stuttering! I'll add a warning about that. I wonder if it would run smoother in PowerShell?

@sirfist19: First, add Python to your PATH. After you do that, in a command prompt or PowerShell, the command `python` should do something, rather than saying "command not found". Then, in the cmd prompt, go to wherever you downloaded the game code, and run `python3 game.py`. As Greg the Egg said, you might get some stuttering.

Deeper Bros. Digital Computer by Adam Selker 2021-04-29T05:37:45Z

@temulgeh : Yeah, the editor has a lot of edge cases and almost-bugs... at least I have the excuse that I'm pretending to be a really simple computer! =P Unfortunately, I don't think I can fix this one, that would be adding a feature after the fact.

There's a brief mention of "big-endian" in the documentation, I figured folks would mostly figure it out by trial an error. This game already has a four-page manual _instead of_ a tutorial, lol.

Thanks for playing!

Deeper Bros. Digital Computer by Adam Selker 2021-05-01T01:21:21Z

@vknauss : Right you are! Fixed, thank you!

Deeper Bros. Digital Computer by Adam Selker 2021-05-06T05:52:24Z

@gnevesdev : That's not supposed to happen! Mind sending a screenshot of the code that causes it? Can you tell if it's a graphical artifact or if the stack is actually gone?

@Homlet : Haha, I've left so many accidental ":w"'s in the code =) Really, your code should be autosaved, but I didn't have time during the jam, so now it's on the Post-Jam Improvement List. Hope you didn't lose too much time!

Deeper Bros. Digital Computer by Adam Selker 2021-05-08T21:31:46Z

@gnevesdev : I can't seem to reproduce the problem. Here's a clip of your code running in the "Powers of Two" puzzle:

https://imgur.com/a/1tqGbDv

It looks like the code consumes three stack elements each loop, which makes sense since there are three POP instructions.

Do you see something different?

Thanks!

@blubberquark : If you want less-restricted coding puzzles, check out Project Euler! They're a bunch of mathy code challenges / logic puzzles, and a great way to learn a new language. For extra mathiness, try them in Haskell!
