nice top down shooter i kept dying.

theviraldragon 2019-04-29 12:55

Nice game. The music is a bit loud.

hutchings90 2019-05-03 19:07

Fun game! It's like laser tag. Interesting interpretation of life as currency. Oxygen is required to live, but it isn't HP or blood, which are more typical interpretations.

black-flag 2019-05-03 19:12

I really like the AI of the enemies, the shop where you buy items from also has variety! The pixel art characters also look well made! The system with oxygen is also a cool take on the theme! The damage enemies do could maybe do with some balancing, however it is a jam so I totally get not being able to focus time on balancing! Another thing you could maybe add is making the cover and obstacles around the levels pixel-art-objects to do with the planet/environment where you are!

Overall, this is a well made and fun jam entry!

1samuel411 2019-05-03 19:20

Pretty fun and challenging. The items cost was too much and I wasn't able to unlock anything till level 7 after buying armor in level 1. I liked how the legs rotated based on input, it was a nice touch and felt smooth. Great font too! You should be proud of this submission :) Hope you enjoyed your first Ludum Dare

datagreed 2019-05-03 19:26

@1samuel411 thanks! I really appreciate that you noticed the legs rotation :) When I put the floors in, I realized it's very hard to notice the legs of the character as they lack contrast with the background but did not really have time to fix that :))

borys 2019-05-03 19:27

Concept is simple, but you made a game really well. Game feel is good, but I think some elements are killing this feeling. I mean e.g. the bullet lifetime (imo it's too short) and the movement speed (it's kinda low). Although, very nice entry!

balance686 2019-05-03 19:42

I dig the title! Nice mechanic with the oxygen (only game I've played so far this jam like that). It works well with the theme. I appreciate that the legs are animated as also - makes the graphics seem less static. I bought armor for the first round and couldn't afford anything after that. Maybe the value of the oxygen you pick up could be higher? Also I'd like it if the movement speed was faster. Good compo game!

eelstork 2019-05-03 19:44

A wholesome game with an intro, story, upgrades... Pretty good given time allocated to this. i'd prefer difficulty to ramp up a little slower; also just tweaking the colors could make this a lot more eye-able.

j0ye 2019-05-03 20:39

The sounds are a bit boring. But besides i really like your game. You did very well for 48 hours. Good job and great game

cogcomp 2019-05-03 20:40

Addictive game. A bit tricky to get the hang of, but quite fun when you do. Well done!

dusho 2019-05-03 21:42

fun to play, some gun sounds would give this game some immersion, but that music was good as well. nice work

pcmaster 2019-05-04 08:28

Plays well, the music is more than OK. Shame you didn't manage to squeeze in the sounds, I know how that feels, I had that with music last LD :( Next time, add a bit of screenshake and it'll boost the experience a bit :) What I didn't like/understand is that when I killed the last enemy, it wouldn't allow me grab the remaining tanks (or does take them automatically)?

candlesan 2019-05-04 08:28

Good music and audio. I liked the concept of using my oxygen to buy the ugprades.

iarwain 2019-05-04 09:32

Very nice compo entry! Really enjoyed the variety of enemies and the music, albeit a bit loud. Wish there were some sound effects though.

138 2019-05-04 13:20

Had to play it until I managed to finish it! Good game mechanics and difficulty.

My main question is... Why don't the enemies run out of oxygen? :astonished:

fashionbatman 2019-05-04 21:11

Pretty simple and well designed. All around good job!

datagreed 2019-05-05 11:16

@pcmaster thanks! Yeah, it feels horrible when you don't have time to squeeze something in :) After completing each level you get an oxygen bonus (amount depends on level, I tried to use it for balancing, but did not get much time to do that right), the bonus covers the remaining tank and adds some seconds on top ;)

datagreed 2019-05-05 11:19

@138 Thanks! Good question about enemies running out of oxygen.

At first I was going to add this mechanic, but that would mean that I will have to develop a better AI that actually explores the level trying to find the player in order to survive and picks up oxygen tanks (which I did not really have time to), otherwise you could have outlived the enemies by hiding from them and I wanted the game to feel fast (well, I guess increasing the movement speed would also help this).

al-bueche 2019-05-05 15:36

Fun game

I ended up completing the game with the starter pistol because oxygen seemed more valuable to me than a gun with limited ammo. Once I got the strafing down, enemies were easy enough.

turtwiggy 2019-05-05 15:44

Nice game, liked the theme and it all worked really well :)

Small feedback - the maps felt pretty large for a small amount of enemies, and I often couldn't find the last one. A minimap or some indicator could really help!

datagreed 2019-05-05 15:47

@al-bueche thanks! Originally I wanted to add strafing for enemies, so they'll try to dodge shots fired at them, but did not have time to implement it :)

datagreed 2019-05-05 15:48

@turtwiggy that's a good idea, thanks. I'll probably add a minimap or arrows pointing at enemies in post-compo update :)

weine 2019-05-05 16:07

Good take on the theme, and a top-down shooter always works! The movement was a bit imprecise and slow for the fast pace of the rest of the game. Also more sounds could have improved the mood.

philipprapp95 2019-05-05 16:53

Interesting game, and a pretty hard one, too. You need a few restarts to manage the game. Especially the MG guys. As @turtwiggy said, a minimap would've been really great. Good job!

coatline 2019-05-05 18:10

Cool game, but I wish you ran a little faster. When I reached stage 3, I lost all of the things I bought and I found that the spread shot guys were pretty hard. The AI was interesting and was probably fun to program. :) I wish that there were sound affects when you shot so that it added some more life to the game. The upgrades was done cleverly. Also, the music isn't that bad :D ! I did like this a lot!

solah 2019-05-05 18:21

I love the main idea idea of the game and it is well done, just would have liked to be faster. Good job!

wildcard 2019-05-05 19:24

Great, solid game here! Nice idea to make oxygen into currency for bying weapons. I would like to move a little bit faster though to make exploration a little bit quicker. It would also be interresting to utilize the top down perspective to implement simple stealth. You could have a collider of varying size(depending on the enemy type) in front of the AI, and they start shooting only if the player collides with it(or if they take damage from a player bullet). I like the beat in the music, nice variation between stages too by the way!

Well done!

datagreed 2019-05-06 01:05

@wildcard thank you for the review! I wish I had more time to playtest the game. I would definitely speed up the movement. Originally I thought about detection cones in front of enemies and wanted to add a mechanic that lets you kill enemies instantly by blowing up their oxygen tank (making it impossible to pick up, though), so the player could choose between going face-to-face and earning more oxygen, or blowing the enemy up from behind without oxygen reward.

nick-rafalski 2019-05-06 03:04

Lots of good things going on here. The shop is good, the enemy AI gets tougher as the game goes, the shooting isn't sexy but feels good. I wish there was a better indicator of how much time was left other than just a count down. I frequently ran out of time without noticing. Still, a fun game :)

xlambein 2019-05-06 11:11

Pretty cool game, it matches the theme really well :-). One improvement could be to add an arrow that points to the remaining enemies, so we don't lose time walking around the map looking for the last remaining foe :P

paul59 2019-05-06 15:57

Decent game but the controls feel a bit sluggish. Is it just me or is it quite difficult?

edevjogos 2019-05-06 16:16

Cool game. The movement speed could be a bit faster.

flying-dog-fish 2019-05-06 16:41

A nice but hard game. Some sort of a radar would be nice to have.

blacklambert 2019-05-06 17:18

Fun and intensive gameplay! A little to hard for my taste but I managed to beat the game anyway. Loved the concept of air beeing life beeing currency. But I needed the oxygen so badly to complete the levels I only bought some armor. Nothing else.

lubaka 2019-05-06 20:49

A difficult game but an entertaining one nonetheless. The movement speed is a bit slow imo and the music is rather repetitive but apart from that it is a solid top down shooter!

dick-claus 2019-05-07 08:09

Cool top down shooter. I like the idea and it matches the theme very good.

furtive-pygmy 2019-05-08 07:10

Nice game! I like the use of the theme and top-down shooters are one of my favourites. Graphics were great, music was nice but a volume slider would have been good. I think the bullets and movement were a little bit slow, but not terrible. The oxygen shop was a bit unbalanced, but that's understandable in a jam.

With a bit of polish this would be a great little game.

tddawson 2019-05-09 18:47

Good job of using the theme to influence the mechanics! I agree with a lot of feedback that has been given and that you've already taken to heart: increased player movement speed, smaller maps or a way to locate enemies when they're off-screen, and a little bit of balancing could go a long way. I wanted to be able to experience more of the upgrades, but it was hard when I was barely staying alive from the get-go. At the end of the day, I had fun playing, so great work!

vinay-rao 2019-05-14 19:40

Pretty cool top-down shooter. Graphics and audio are both good. I too found the player movement just a bit slow. It's a bit difficult to gain extra oxygen to spend when the player movement is so slow. Perhaps crediting the last oxygen tank to the player when the final enemy is defeated will help with this? I had to play the game multiple times to afford and experiment with the different weapons, as I tended to break even on oxygen otherwise.

With just a couple tweaks up up the game pace I think this one is in a pretty good spot.

Good job!
