LD45 — Start with nothing

NoThIng by Erkberg 2019-10-07T07:56:34Z

This was an interesting game that has a mix of several different genres such as "clicker" and "FPS", and can be completed in a single sitting. Switching genres like this in-game keeps it really interesting! Don't know why this has zero ratings right now---more people should give it a try!

Cloud Boy by JCMonkey 2019-10-07T00:19:16Z

Reminds me of an old game called "Tony's Teddy". Really enjoy that cloud-creating mechanic. Nice job!

Conjury: The Convocation the RPG by unpronounceable 2019-10-06T22:33:28Z

The music and sounds were fun---definitely enjoyed that. The mechanics are very detailed, so it's clear that I'd need to play it a lot more to become good at it and that there's depth to the game play. It felt a little abstract, though; I wasn't quite clear on how some of the cards worked.

World Collector by Joe Williamson 2019-10-11T02:11:37Z

This is a superb game! The music is wonderful and the game comes across as very polished! Really like the idea of adding your own world tiles as you find them. Great job!

Pen's Elope by Frank Boivin 2019-10-07T06:12:53Z

The game has a beautiful aesthetic and the music is very soothing. Unfortunately, I can't seem to progress beyond solving initial three-gear puzzle. Would be great to see more!

Bearly Alive by bjeaurn 2019-10-06T22:01:35Z

This was fun, although I didn't immediately work out that you had to be carrying a kill (with E) to eat it first. What I really liked was that you had to balance the energy level of your cub with the desire to keep catching food. The addition of the trees made it interesting because they slowed you down.

The Legend of Sky Stones by Iluvatar 2019-10-07T07:35:15Z

Takes me back to King's Quest! This was a lot of fun, and short enough to complete in an entire sitting. Really enjoyed it! My only suggestion might be to make the walking a bit faster.

Sticky Fingers by ruthiepee 2019-10-28T19:31:47Z

This was a pretty unique game. Music was great! It seems the hand doesn't work after the first round, though.

A Platfomer by ZenriS 2019-10-11T02:15:51Z

Music is pretty good, and the interfere is responsive. Jumping and character movement could be a little quicker, but this actually helps since I'm really bad at jumping anyways! Encountered a bug where I couldn't jump and got stuck if I initiated the jump while snuggled up against a block. Other than that, very clever game!

Unfinished: The Game by jondalnas 2019-10-06T22:37:11Z

Gave it a try even though you said not to! Are there any other mechanics besides moving and jumping? Would be great to see more.

Ultra Quest by 100th_Coin 2019-10-08T05:32:19Z

This was an excellent game! Not too hard, but made you think a bit. It was very polished and the mechanics were solid. There were also several funny moments. Visuals looked awesome. The music was beautiful and I really enjoyed how it was in sync with level completion. Really nice job!

The Nothings by Stefanie Leitch 2019-10-07T05:56:25Z

I really enjoyed this game! The Nothings is very forgiving---I kept getting hit or dying but the game didn't hold me back or force me to redo my progress, which was very nice. Music was catchy and the controls were simple and sweet. Great submission.

Guns & Stuff by matharoo 2019-10-09T02:03:37Z

The mood is set really nicely with the lighting and music. I must really suck at it, though, because I kept dying! But it was a lot of fun to continually get further along as I kept playing. Well done!

Logical by Cethin 2019-10-09T01:39:22Z

This is a fun way to learn logical operators, and a fun and unique type of puzzle game. My only complaint is that the UI elements sometimes required "shaking" so that new connections could be made. Otherwise, great! Nice job!

Keep Dreaming Joshua by soyrandom 2019-10-07T23:49:58Z

Link to the Windows build works. The graphics and animations are great! That nun was super creepy. Was a little confused by the teddy-bear-xylophone challenge, though---I couldn't find and click the colours that fast! Definitely an interesting submission. Nice job!

Planet Jumpers by Adrenallen 2019-10-09T03:14:06Z

Being able to leave your spaceship and walk around is a pretty neat feature. I enjoyed the mix of game modes. Great job with the procedural design!

You Gotta Be Kitten Me by Silas Reinagel 2019-10-09T06:14:00Z

This game was a real hoot. Nice job! The Roombas were a nice addition and it was really funny! The cut scene at the beginning was great, and the Roomba-following camera after the end was a nice touch. The sound effects and graphics suit the style of the game nicely. Music was also well done. My only suggestion would be to improve the movement of the cat a little---I dropped into the abyss more than once since the cat moved very quickly.

Amor Fati by starvingindie 2019-10-07T21:18:16Z

This was a fun game. Sound effects, visuals, and music were all well done. Tells a nice story, too!

Birb Empire by Los 2019-10-08T05:19:09Z

The intentional spelling mistakes made this really funny. I particularly enjoyed the "CENSORED" description for the tool-tip for the Love Nest. I ended up making 10 birds total but it appears the game does not progress beyond this. Addictive! Also, the banner image is very funny.

Spam Space To Exist by Wheffle 2019-10-09T03:23:37Z

Took me a minute to get the hang of it, but it was fun once I realized how effective it was to ram the other ships and then absorb their abilities. I think more people should be playing this game!

Deer Game by kantieno 2019-10-29T18:35:35Z

Controls were very smooth and the jumping of the deer looked really good. Graphics were also very charming. Sound would have gone a long way, though. Boss battle at the temple was rather difficult. Overall, a fun submission; nice job!

First, you get the potatoes by Kodiqi 2019-10-08T06:10:02Z

Although the game is simple, it's satisfying to level up and gain prestige! You can play for as long as you like, it appears, which is great. My only suggestion would be to add some audio effects (although I have noted that this game has opted out of this category).

Orbiter by stuckne1 2019-10-09T06:02:45Z

Interesting mechanic! Controls are super-simple (which is a good thing) and I was able to win the game after a couple of runaway planets! Would be great to see this expanded on a bit more, as the core idea seems solid. Graphics are pretty, too. Keep it up!

DesertTamer by svyatozar 2019-10-07T06:52:08Z

The intro was really great and made me chuckle. I would love to see this developed further. Keep it up!

Planet Rebuilder by Santiago Merino 2019-10-06T22:26:41Z

I like the idea of re-building levels based on blurry photographs. Character movement is smooth and the birds chirping is a nice touch! What I wasn't clear on was how the game ranks your recreations.

Checkboxes by mandrilltiger 2019-10-07T23:34:31Z

This was very original and fun! A great take on the theme. That second-last level took me a while. Really great job!

MoneyDude by zyapimstudios 2019-10-07T21:54:07Z

This was an interesting game. The music is very catchy! I had some trouble balancing work with energy levels, so maybe those mechanics could be tweaked a bit.

March of the Gladiators by FinalForeach 2019-10-09T01:47:11Z

Controls were very responsive and easy to use. It was fun, although I died very quickly during the several times I played. Perhaps the enemies should have less health, initially. But still fun to play!

There is nothing here by konomizure 2019-10-08T06:39:36Z

This was a clever game. The music is soothing and sets a nice mood. There was also some subtle humour in the captions up top, which made it enjoyable. My only suggestion would be to add some mechanic for collecting pixels automatically over time, as opposed to have to click all the time to get the wallpaper ending.

Start With Nothing On by Lagman9000 2019-10-07T23:08:48Z

This was a really funny game. The music and visuals were spot-on! For some reason, it ran slowly on my laptop, though. Hit me up if you'd like system specs or log info or something.

Space Shooter by notgreat 2019-10-07T22:09:45Z

Took a little bit to familiarize myself with the controls, but the idea of scavenging off destroyed ships is really neat. Would be nice to see some more additions to the kind of equipment you can gather.

ARCADE GIRL by ROBOWARRIOR1982 2019-10-07T06:29:18Z

The menu was pretty hilarious. I was even able to shoot and move around from the title screen, which was entertaining. Controls were simple and I caught on easily. Enjoyed this game a lot. Well done!

Castaway Capture by WiredOverload 2019-10-07T21:23:29Z

It appears the link is broken.

Bonker Droids by NorthernDevGuy 2019-10-10T00:04:25Z

This was a nice game! The robot models looked good and the intro screen was visually appealing as well. It was fun to watch all the AI robots kill each other, and then zoom in while they were distracted. Great idea, and I would love to see this developed further. Well done!

Cube puzzle game by YorisFresh 2019-10-07T01:02:28Z

Fun little puzzle game! I had to think quite a bit to figure out what my next moves should be. Would be great to see more levels in the future. Well done!

David & Goliaths by FizzpowMike1 2019-10-07T07:03:55Z

It seems that on my browser all I get is a black background with a green character. The music is great, though! Very creepy. Let me know if you'd like error logs or system specs or something.

Uh Oh Galaxy by ZanyG 2019-10-06T23:51:00Z

The premise of this game is really neat. You truly do start with nothing! I had some trouble with positioning the planets, though---it was a little tough to figure out what relative sizes/positions are needed.

FromNothing by Copito 2019-10-09T01:56:36Z

The initial challenge of having to quickly hunt for apples was interesting---I died several times before I found enough to survive! Controls were responsive. Music was also well-suited and set the tone properly. A hard game, but fun!

What have you got there? by kirroyal 2019-10-07T22:03:02Z

This is a very charming game---the premise is cute and the graphics and audio are great. Mood is excellent. The controls seemed a little unresponsive, particularly when it came to jumping, but were otherwise good!

Nothing Ground Down Nothing by Vilja 2019-10-09T03:07:45Z

It seems the Chrome version didn't work on my computer, but on Firefox it did. Couldn't figure out how to get past the potato stage! Good aesthetics, though!

Genesis 1 (God Simulator Procedually Generated) by Ausstein 2019-10-11T07:02:13Z

Funny game! I created trees of swords. This is a fun game. I like how there's lots of different ways you can combine environmental features.Grab 20191011000023 w1920h1080 x113y36z63r65.jpg

Dead Again by Joe Bustamante 2019-10-11T06:07:47Z

This was fun! I initially started using the big sword, but it was a surprise when the smaller group of enemies came at a later level---I had to readjust my tactics! Music was catchy. Controls were responsive. Would be nice to see some variety in enemy attack behaviours in the future; currently, you just get rushed and they park it next to you and hack away. But still fun!

Attack of the Killer Yarn Balls! by Zliebowitz 2019-10-11T04:57:41Z

This was a fun one. The music was very catchy and the movement/jump mechanics were solid---it felt like I had good control of the main cat character. I particularly enjoyed how the yarn balls appeared to get more attentive as you got closer. Would be nice to see more levels in the future. Nice job!

ClockFall by lzklein 2019-10-07T23:25:29Z

Link seems to be working now. I'm unsure if some UI elements were missing or not, as there were no explanations about goals, controls, or mechanics. It appears that the goal is to shoot incoming mechanical pieces with the mouse, while moving with WASD. The music is great, and a little bit sad/haunting. The graphics were also very good. The game could probably use a little polish in terms of feedback/info for the player.

The Start to a New Beginning by Bobothegreat 2019-10-07T21:22:52Z

Another really funny entry! The spelling mistakes and the descriptive narrative made me chuckle. Didn't take long to get to the ending. Forgot how much fun text games could be!

While you're here by Dinorex 2019-10-11T02:29:51Z

This game had an excellent mood. The music was slightly suspenseful yet sad, and fit the theme of the story being told quite well. Movement mechanics were also solid and as I pieced the story elements together I became more and more curious! Well done.

NOTHING : A sentient ascendency by Rooster And Frétillant 2019-10-07T23:18:32Z

Worked fine for me! Had to do a bit of exploring to find everything, and the collision detection seemed a little glitchy at certain spots, but was otherwise fun! Wandering around looking for parts is a neat idea. Music was great, too! Fun game that can be finished in a quick sitting.

Hunt and Gather by Gaz_Ireland 2019-10-06T22:13:28Z

I found the low-poly aesthetic nice! Ran smoothly on my laptop. Would be nice to see a highlight or something around the character you have selected.

Hunt and Gather by Gaz_Ireland 2019-10-07T08:11:38Z

@gaz-ireland I hear ya!

Ludum Dare Simulator by Marcin J 2019-10-06T23:22:19Z

This was fun and it made me laugh (in a good way)! Lots of that stuff is so true. Some of the card stats were clipped on the bottom of my screen, so I couldn't read them. Otherwise, great fun!

Medieval Mayhem by itsTripp 2019-10-08T06:29:33Z

The audio and graphics were very well done! This set the mood of the game very effectively. There was a little bit of glitchiness at times (I believe I clipped through a wall and fell forever, once), but this wasn't a deal-breaker. Well done!

Star Twit: H. Nothing by ogre 2019-10-09T01:31:35Z

I really liked the take on the "start with nothing" theme. The physics-based nature of the game play was nice, too. Perhaps the single simplest thing that would make it even more fun might be to make the left-and-right controls not use inertia; aiming was hard! Otherwise, quite fun.

start with nothing by xart2012 2019-10-07T05:12:47Z

This one had me chuckling at the end. That was very funny. Quite an interesting take---nice job!

It may be your story by Keseril 2019-10-07T00:08:58Z

I feel like a story is definitely being told here! This is a very interesting interpretation, and the symbolism with the size of the words (and how they jumped in front of or around the player) was fun. Nice job!

Nothing On Frontlines by Pavel Ivanov 2019-10-07T04:26:59Z

Finally got around to trying your game after you played mine. It was a lot of fun! The particle effects and variety of enemies made it very satisfying to play. Well done!

Planet Z33 by LanaLux 2019-10-07T05:41:20Z

The atmosphere in this game was really great. I found myself panicking about getting to the base before nightfall! Audio design and graphics were very good. Will likely pick it up again some time to see how far in the game I can get.

The Inheritance by VinnieNovido 2019-10-07T08:10:03Z

This is a very entertaining game that deserves more than the zero ratings it currently has! The note left on the table made me laugh out loud. When I stepped onto the street, that was hilarious, too! Simple, and can be finished in a single sitting if you're clever and paying attention. The hand-drawn nature of the graphics just adds to the charm. Well done!

Wipe It by BarracudaDisaster 2019-10-07T21:14:52Z

This was hilarious. Audio design fit the visuals and it was fun to play. Great take on the theme, too! The "A" and "D" controls were slightly awkward since I kept falling down, but otherwise the game played very well.

Mr.Grind by iozsaygi 2019-10-06T21:52:13Z

Quite charming and fun. Sound effects suit the game well. I agree with previous comments saying that an ultimate end goal would be nice. Great job!

Flourish by Corrade 2019-10-07T06:58:08Z

This is a beautiful game! Controls are not too complex, which is nice. The game is hard, though! Those pesky insects keep eating my plant!

Hellion: The Legend of Jeff by Mad Brokli 2019-10-09T02:37:23Z

This was fantastic! It was quite polished and the death screams were hilarious. Building up a defensive fort with crossbows was really enjoyable. Mood was excellent.

Clothes On My Back, Things In The Sack by MaxyMax 2019-10-11T06:13:58Z

This is an interesting game, although I found it a bit unforgiving---you get "caught" even prior to stealing if the guards see you at all: whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? :) I really liked the pick-pocketing mechanic, and it was well done, particularly because it wasn't instantaneous. Audio was excellent as well. Nice job!

Letterout by tohubohu 2019-10-08T05:41:49Z

This takes me back to the good old Scrabble games! I like the idea that you have to fill in certain squares to get to the next level. It's unclear if there is always an optimal solution or if the tiles are just given to you randomly. The goals are well-explained and immediately understandable. Little bit of background music might help.

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T00:36:16Z

Thanks for the feedback! My interpretation in this case was that you build up your fort, because initially you don't have one ("nothing"). Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T00:39:56Z

I'll look into the crash issues right away.

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T00:49:33Z

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T01:16:05Z

Those are very helpful comments. Thanks very much!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T05:08:09Z

Hi @pavel-ivanov. Thanks very much! I played your game just recently, and really enjoyed it.

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T05:08:47Z

Thanks, @lanalux. Glad you liked playing it!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T05:58:41Z

1.3K?? Wow! You're right, I should explain the ramming and make the gold crate spawn message more clear. Thanks very much---I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T07:16:58Z

Hi @finalforeach. Thanks for letting me know. I've been unable to duplicate this issue on any of my machines, sadly. A proper OpenAL installation might fix this issue. I've provided "oalinst.exe" for this purpose, in the "bin" folder. Failing that, I've also provided a windows BAT file which will run an OpenAL diagnostic and save the results to a text file. An additional fix might be to try using a different audio device---any chance you have a special headset or speakers connected?

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T07:57:30Z

Thank you, @inventivum-games!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T08:23:13Z

@tadeas-paule: Thanks very much! A gripper mechanic has been suggested instead of a pushing one---perhaps that's something for future work. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T08:24:15Z

@blint6: Thank you! I was hoping some folks would stick with it enough to encounter the larger "spawner" tanks. Maybe I'll have them move in a bit so they're a bit more obvious. A mini-map is also a great suggestion. Thanks! Glad you found it fun!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T08:28:44Z

@tadeas-paule That's a great tip---I agree!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T08:36:42Z

@compasslg: Thank you! I'm happy to hear that you found it fun. That's an interesting fact about the anti-virus, though---will keep that in mind.

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T08:55:47Z

@lamossus: Ha---I was wondering when players would discover that trick! Glad to see someone did. Thanks for playing; I appreciate it and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T09:04:20Z

@rillep: Glad you like it! Yep, that's a feasible strategy. I'm glad players are thinking creatively. :)

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T16:54:45Z

@copito: Any chance you're using Wine? Some folks have reported issues with that. Another individual mentioned that disabling the anti-virus allows it to run.

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T16:54:58Z

@griz: Yep, that's a fun strategy!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-07T19:45:05Z

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-08T07:02:33Z

@danny-wynne Thanks very much! A few folks have mentioned that the pacing might be a little slow, yes. I'll take that under advisement.

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-08T07:02:53Z

@radgegames They sure have, haven't they? Glad you enjoyed it!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-08T07:03:40Z

Hi @matharoo. Any chance you're using Wine? That has been known to cause issues. Additionally, one user mentioned that they had to disable their antivirus to get the game to run.

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-08T18:49:15Z

@mad-brokli: Are you using Wine? Some folks have reported issues. Also, anti-virus software sometimes causes problems.

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-08T18:49:48Z

@notime4games Yep, that corner-stacking strategy is a clever way to keep the win streak going! Thanks for the feedback!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-08T18:50:04Z

@evgenimp Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed it.

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-08T18:51:20Z

@lombax Glad you enjoyed playing! I'll have to think about how to prevent that stacking strategy---for a quick compo in the short term, I was completely open to the idea that users would come up with clever ideas like this. If this game develops into something more, I'll definitely need to address this.

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-08T19:07:59Z

@mad-brokli Thanks for the info. There is also a "lastplaylog.txt" log file that may contain some useful information---unfortunately, I've not been able to duplicate this issue on any of my machines.

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-08T20:19:16Z

@winslow Thanks for the feedback! I'm sorry you found the controls frustrating. Could you elaborate? I'm a little confused what you meant by the robot "sliding all over the place"---the robot should barely slide at all (although it's supposed to, but only a little bit!). Thanks!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-08T20:41:43Z

@ogre @cethin @finalforeach @copito @matharoo @mad-brokli Hi, sorry to ping you all like this. I've discovered a bug where the game wouldn't start if there's insufficient memory on the GPU to store the texture sprite sheets. I've applied a fix to this by shrinking several of them, so the game might run now for some (or all) of you. If you have the time, please give it a try and let me know. Thank you!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-08T21:45:13Z

@copito Glad things are working now!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-08T21:46:38Z

@erkberg Thanks for playing---I'm glad you enjoyed it! My take on the theme was that you build up your fort from nothing, but there are definitely some submissions on LD45 with more "truer" interpretations in that sense. Thanks again!

Robo-Fort by geoff.nagy 2019-10-09T05:57:12Z

Thanks, @daria-toni; I'm happy that you liked it. My take on the theme was that you build your fort from nothing, but it seems that a lot of other folks took this to a whole 'nother level (and quite creatively, too!).

This came across as really polished! The feedback from the first bird ("move me!") instantly told you how the game worked. I played several times to see how far I could get. Very easy to understand, and also additive!

This game deserves more ratings! It's a lot of fun once you get the hang of the rules, and the mechanics seem pretty balanced: you need to maintain a delicate balance of moving ships, building new ships, and attacking. The start screen looked great. Dialogue was pretty funny, too. Great job!

The jam ends in 1 second by Tadeas Paule 2019-10-07T07:12:50Z

This is a clever idea. Very "meta"! I like the sandbox feel of the game. I wasn't immediately clear on how to use the left-hand toolbox, but I figured it out after a fresh start.

Controls were responsive and the combat was fun! One strategy is to park it at either the top or bottom and collect arrows as they miss you, and then shoot them back. The graphics were simple but effective.

Fear of Haunting Demo by Desenvolvedor44 2019-10-09T03:00:19Z

The music was excellent! Controls were responsive, although I kept getting caught on doorways. Mood was set very nicely and it felt creepy. Great job!

This was a lot of fun to play. I just wanted to keep playing to see how many more "gameplay elements" I could purchase. I wonder how far it goes...

Exit Nothing by Brice Mahier 2019-10-07T06:07:59Z

This was quite clever, and challenging! Perhaps I'm not good at it, but it took a while to get past the first level. Premise is straightforward and easy to understand, and the controls are simple too.

Why is it Raining Bricks by willianfreitas 2019-10-11T01:59:32Z

The sounds effects and music were excellent. Reminded me a bit of Mario Party. Graphics were also really good---low that low-poly look! The gameplay was a bit fast, and some sort of feedback for getting hit by cars would be a nice addition.

The addition of a "training mode" with no consequences is a great idea. Reminds me of the practice mode for mini-games in Mario Party. Nice job for a first game jam! My only suggestion would be to add images of cars instead of boxes. Next time!
