LD34 — Two Button Controls / Growing

Sort the Court! by graebor 2015-12-15T02:07:00

The graphics and music are wonderful. The writing is hilarious (especially some of the reference characters).

With some additional interplay between the characters I could see this becoming a full game! The Witch and the Slime for example, could have a full short story on their own, and many other characters could have similar stories with branching paths depending on your decisions. I would give more examples, but I don't want to spoil too much for anyone!

Great work!

The Story of the First Ants by Category5Kawaiiju 2015-12-16T03:44:00

Not too many jam games tell a story, so it was good to see. I also like how the art had its own flavor that went beyond just the story that was being told.

Maybe a couple additional smaller games between the "chapters" of the story could have helped improve the game aspect a bit. In any case, it was a charming experience :)

URBO by hadesfury 2015-12-15T05:50:00

The art is amazing. This is one of the most impressive looking games from the jam. It looks professional and polished, and I found myself looking at the city modules trying to piece together what type of technology or company was being represented, making up neat stories for each.

It has a sort of old Maxis feel to it, similar to Sim City 2000 or 3000. Definitely dig that.

However, when I had 24 blocks left, I encountered a bug. The same city region kept asking me questions. No other city regions could ask questions, and no more blocks were appearing.

Overall, definitely a great entry! Loved it, and I'd like to see it expanded with additional mechanics. Choosing your next block and where to put it would be neat.

Nuclear Arms 2: Garbage Day by Logicon 2015-12-15T05:19:00

I had a little trouble activating the "shake" function, but everything else works great! The game looks amazing, the intro story is funny, the game over screen is hilarious.

One small bug: you can shoot the guns even after you've died. This isn't a game breaking bug at all.

Sun Station by RARoadkill 2015-12-15T01:26:00

Very good production value. The audio in the training video is great. Very funny. The graphics are impressive!

I think it would help if the instructions were a bit more obvious. Running to the panel and remembering the instructions takes quite a lot of time, necessitating multiple sessions. If there were a few icons on a HUD that showed the click order, that might be a bit more helpful.

It's somewhat poetic that there's a feature that requires 3 buttons, but since the theme was "2 button controls" you're sort of stuck! Good use of the theme!

A Subtle Dispute by TheSteveIAm 2015-12-16T05:20:00

Very creative with the theme :) I like the concept of using the lack of a button being pressed as another input method!

Breathe by Galvesmash 2015-12-31T01:19:00

Very atmospheric, which is awesome. It made me want to know more about the universe. I almost feel as if the story of this game is a cancer survivor who finished her treatment, and she's still battling during recovery. Every demon you slay is a step in recovery. Hence the hair growth mechanic.

In any case, it's beautiful. Very well done!

Arc by ChuiGum 2015-12-16T04:32:00

Amazing entry overall. Great music, great mechanics, great aesthetic (the logo is awesome, and not a lot of LD games concern themselves with branding, but I think it really paid off for you).

Great job! You should continue with it and release it on mobile!

SAAAM by Ogniok 2015-12-16T03:11:00

Excellent polish and quality. The audio is phenomenal, the voice acting is great (even the delivery of the comedic lines is spot on). I love that even the "non-interactive" components had small interactions. A lot of people would have ignored things like additional doors, but you put the care into making them clickable, and giving them a reactive sound - it goes a long way towards making the world feel less like a corridor and more like a real place! The scratches on the first door/wall really adds to the atmosphere too!

The only flaw I can think of is not giving the player the option to skip the dialogue for the second play through. Also, the game crashed on my for my first try, but on my second try it worked fine. Those are incredibly nitpicky, and what you've accomplished here is incredible.

MANE by Enchae 2015-12-17T02:10:00

This game is nostalgic as hell. From the absurd concept to the brutal difficulty, this game screams NES. The music is great, the graphics are great (side note: what's with classic style games and making me hate ducks).

Overall this game is awesome. It's a tad TOO hard in my opinion, but everything else makes up for it. The controls are tight, the graphics are awesome, it's definitely one of the funnier games I've played in all of the jams.

Great work!

Eldritch Trance by TheWzzard 2015-12-17T02:47:00

The audio is amazing! It's really remarkable what you've done with just two buttons. The theme was super eerie. Always a big fan of rhythm games and great audio!

Elevacuum by crazya 2015-12-17T02:22:00

Very clever use of type. As an instrucitonal designer my by day job, I love when a game tutorializes itself naturally, and gives you the opportunity to try a mechanic immediately after learning about it, then shows you how to use it in unexpected ways (in the example of your game, skipping the diamond to earn more points).

My only complaint is that it's a little short!

Carp'e Diem! by Archonthewizard 2015-12-16T05:42:00

Amazing music and amazing atmosphere. Gives me warm fuzzy feelings thinking back to Aquatic Ambiance from Donkey Kong Country, with a bit of Pikmin thrown in for good measure. With a bit of polish this could become a full game. The graphics and sound are amazing and it's very fun!

The fish movement is slightly shakey, and I think it might be similar to a problem I had while developing my game. When I used a combo of mouse-based movement (screenpointto) and anticipated velocity for the camera, I had to set the rigidbody "Interpolate" setting to "Extrapolate." This got rid of the issue for the most part.

Overall, this is one of the best games. I was really glad to see you play my game on your show, and I'm really happy I had the chance to play your game too :) Thanks again! Good luck in the competition!

Inferno Botanica by QuestionableQuality 2015-12-15T02:23:00

Everything from the music to the art, to the font you chose really supports the mood! The implementation of a high score mechanic made me play this entry more than most of the other entries I've tried so far! I was really gunning for the top score. I ended up getting seventh or something. Very impressive work.

Solid mechanics. My only gripe is that at some points when you run out of spirit, you might not be near any orbs to collect. Maybe it would help to add a mechanic where spirit appears after you've run out, but only one of the orbs is within the area where you can feasibly reach it. This way you have to quickly judge which one you can collect, and if you're wrong, you die.

Anyway, good game!

Blobitronica by crucknuk 2015-12-17T01:53:00

This was a lot of fun! Definitely very thrilling. I loved the aesthetic, and the "Go fast" mode; I think an even faster mode would be lots of fun! The death ray feels a little unfair, but overall the rest of the game is awesome.

Lumberjack vs. Ancient Druid's Cybertree by anv 2015-12-16T03:27:00

Right from the moment I heard "First Chop" I knew I would like this one. The graphics are great, and the sound is excellent. I realize it was probably a glitch, but after I died bombs kept hitting me, and it had a hilarious "hit you while you're down" effect. Even the title is hilarious!

When the trees first popped up I thought maybe it would be like gauntlet. If you expanded the idea, I could see it going in that direction. Excellent job!

Line/Dash by Eingya 2015-12-17T02:33:00

More than any other game I've played in the jam, this one let me feel creative. The aesthetic makes me feel like I'm creating a modern art piece, and the musical aspect really feels natural. I'd love to see you build up the musical aspect of this game, enhance the graphics just a little bit (maybe some neat explosion effects when you hit the squares, maybe some different square types, and some power ups).

Swordsman's Life by hcosta 2015-12-17T01:47:00

It's cute as a parody for sure! Also, I'm surprised to hear you say you sacrificed most of the graphics. Honestly the graphics looked pretty darn good compared to many LD games.

The game itself could have been a little stronger. The humor definitely keeps it entertaining though!

Ritual of Flowers by amorphous 2015-12-15T01:33:00

Good use of the theme. Using pre-defined paths definitely opens this up in a neat way. It adds a little bit of a tactical element to when you should switch abilities.

Is this multiplayer? I felt a bit like I was facing off against another player.

I think sound definitely would have helped this, and I experienced quite a bit of slowdown after a minute or so.

Lumber Jacques Cousteau by Spiria 2015-12-15T01:58:00

Great use of audio and great graphics! I'm very impressed. Also, the title pun is awesome, and as a Canadian I did appreciate all the maple syrup and the beaver main character.

MapleCopter by TheBreakfast 2015-12-15T02:14:00

Thanks for the feedback! I planned on implementing a growing animation to make it more related to the theme, but I was a little pressed for time :)

MapleCopter by TheBreakfast 2015-12-16T03:21:00

Thanks anyways Mr.A! Glad you stopped by to take a look :)

MapleCopter by TheBreakfast 2015-12-16T04:22:00

Thanks for the feedback! I didn't make the music, but a friend of mine made it specifically for me to use in a game jam. Admittedly the music was made before the jam though.

MapleCopter by TheBreakfast 2015-12-17T04:47:00

Great idea Allthebees! Thanks for the feedback!

fungus fungus fungus by MattWoelk 2015-12-15T02:03:00

Awesome submission! I love the controls, and it's impressive what you've accomplished with the AI. The graphics are also great!

Nature's Will by 4B 2015-12-16T04:03:00

Neat idea, and very big scope for an LD jam game. The work you did with the graphics was awesome! Having multiple rigged 3d models with unique character is a lot of work!

The balance might be a little off. Once I had made 5 plants, I was pretty much invincible, and I couldn't find a way to expand my grass after that. I couldn't build any more plants, and the enemies all died very quickly.

I like what you did with the theme, but the controls were a little unintuitive.

I think it would have been better to have mouse only controls. Mouse 1 = point where you go. Mouse 2 = open menu. Mouse 1 inside menu = choose selection. Mouse 2 in menu = close menu. With that one touch I think this game would have been awesome! I suggest you continue with the game after the jam, implement better controls, and try to release an updated version!

Also, if you die and try again, the music loops over itself. Just a small glitch, but it actually had a bit of a cool effect on the sound.

32r by Allthebees 2015-12-15T01:45:00

Very interesting! I liked it. It definitely has the mood down. The light music made the conversation seem more jovial, but when the brooding music comes in it really has some bite.

I also like the use of the theme. A and D are appropriate keys. Angel and Devil (good and evil) maybe? Very nice when a LD game can tell a story.

Not sure what happens with the flower pot in the middle. Seems a bit distracting, yet it gives some weight to the scene.

Melissa - A Game of Choice by Imagos Softworks 2015-12-18T01:33:00

The makeup and special effects were incredible (and grotesque). Is this a metaphor for self defeating? The texts and messages all seemed like someone who was struggling with low self esteem, and the way the character kept getting beaten, but tried to put on an unaffected facial expression (but ultimately looked a little sad) seemed to be about an internal struggle. At times I felt like the perspective looked like someone looking into a mirror, judging themselves. Amazing cinematography at work there!

Are there multiple endings? The early clues and messages made me pay close attention but I didn't see any other opportunities for interaction other than Z and X. Was there any significance to these letters in particular?

Great submission!

Organ-izer by The Merge Conflicts 2015-12-16T03:19:00

This game was awesome! It has a real "Lemmings" vibe to it, and the music had a strong "Tomba" or "Banjo Kazooie" vibe. All of those are incredibly good things. The art was solid, the concept was great, and the execution was solid, entertaining, and funny!

Easily one of my favourite games from the jam so far! Great job!

2108 M81 part II by benjaml 2015-12-15T02:38:00

Definitely a really neat concept. I love the music and the graphics. When you're walking, even in a straight line, it's easy to become disoriented and get lost (in a good, scary kind of way). It also felt kind of trippy, which really works well with the music. When the buildings started to appear, I started to feel like I really wanted to explore this weird world! And when the world started shrinking again, it definitely felt scary and strangling.

However, I think it needs some kind of warning or indication that the world is going to begin shrinking. I saw things start floating into the sky, and I thought it looked neat - like the world was being torn apart. But I wasn't sure what else to make of it. The shrinking happened so fast that I barely had time to notice it. In fact, it wasn't until maybe a minute in before I noticed the growing happening around me. If I had stood still I would have noticed it right away though I think.

Overall, very interesting! One of the more unique entries I've played.

Vrach's Lab by VrachLab 2015-12-15T01:29:00

I received a 403 error from the website and could not play your game. Do you have a downloadable version available?

vector escape by minism 2015-12-16T05:23:00

The graphics were super neat, and I love the various twists you made on the two button theme. Switching up the game instead of the inputs - good choice! The last level is definitely a standout high point!

LD35 — Shapeshift

Stone sacrifice by hadesfury 2016-04-27T02:49:00

Really liked the characters and animations, and the audio fit perfectly. I think the concept of herding in first person has a lot of potential

Panzerantix by CptDustmite 2016-04-28T00:06:00

This reminds me of a reverse Lightbot Hour. Really well done! It's hard to believe you did this in just 48 hours! Could use a little music, but overall it's incredible! Great job!

Polydrone by graebor 2016-04-26T02:46:00

This game looks and sounds amazing, and it's a really cool new take on the bullet hell genre. I love that there are multiple ways to strategize. For example, in one round, I played defensively, keeping my shape small and aiming to the outside. On my second round, I shot towards my inside, and surrounded enemies aggressively. I found the "death net" strategy was a lot more effective.

Amazing job as always!

You're A Mimic! by rhill 2016-04-26T02:52:00

Haha I love the concept of the endless loop of the mimic getting caught, arrested, and then found out again. Poor goblins though! Great humour. I actually think our games have a surprising amount in common.

Sound was great, art was great, concept is really funny. Could use a bit more branching options and some music, but it's a lot of fun as is.

Shapeshifting Toys by barkergames 2016-04-27T02:58:00

Mechanically solid! Enjoyed playing it, the idea was executed wonderfully

Reptilian President by deathray 2016-04-27T23:03:00

Haha this is awesome. Immediately when "shape shift" was announced as the theme, I thought of "They Live" and wanted to do something like this. Good job!

Could have used a few sound effects, but it's an awesome achievement for a compo entry!

Tremor by Troyan 2016-04-28T02:28:00

The art style is cool, really good job on that. The sprites are crisp. The music is great too. The idea that objects exist in the real world and the world of the dead is a neat take on the theme, but it would be a little cooler if it fit into the mechanic somehow too!

For example, it almost felt like the objects were changing forms in time with the music. If some objects were dangerous in the real world, but safe in the dead world, and vice versa, that could be a cool mechanic, and it would turn it into a bit of a rhythm game too which would enhance the endless running aspect.

Overall, good job!

Abducktion by JohnnySix 2016-04-28T00:13:00

The amount of polish in this game is simply incredible. The music is amazing, the graphics are gorgeous, and the concept is adorable. Great job! "Avoid the bread" heh that made me laugh, it goes against "conventional wisdom" but it's accurate!

This is the first game I've given 5 on all categories. Great job!!

Moveless Chess by Beavl 2016-04-27T02:48:00

Solid idea, interesting puzzle concept! Graphics were very clean also

SHAPE☆SHIFT by KaiClavier 2016-04-22T05:48:00

At first I thought "well this is a pretty neat platformer, it certainly looks great, especially for a jam game. Once you figure out how it fits the theme, it becomes very clever! Some of the puzzles were very well thought out. The timing-based puzzles can be challenging, but in a good way, and the art/sound is very charming. Great job!

VHS WARS by goodbadokay 2016-04-28T02:20:00

171500! YEAH! I don't know how good that is in the grand scheme of things, but I loved it. Good graphics, good music, good gameplay.

Sculpt Master by LimeniusTeam 2016-04-28T01:42:00

This is an awesome action puzzle game. Very good job, super impressive! The concept is neat, probably the best fit for the theme that I've seen so far. It's difficult, but fun. The sounds are charming.

Muscle Coach by peterjavidpour 2016-04-28T03:28:00

Unfortunately I don't have a Vive, but I do have a DK2, and some experience with making VR experiences. This is incredible and it looks like a lot of fun. It's funny how even a simple concept such as posing a character can be so much better in VR. Just from watching the gifs and videos I can tell you should definitely continue with this concept. A couple weeks more worht of work, and it would be a neat experience you could toss up on the store.

To be honest I could even see the opposite being a really good game! A ddr-style "match my pose" game!

Anyways, awesome concept, and great job!

We Made Rock Paper Scissors by GenericTeamName 2016-04-22T05:36:00

I love the sound design, it's amazing! Everything, from the squeak sound the scissors make when hitting the ground, to the voice acting, and the way the title voice over fades out when loading the level.

The graphics are incredibly charming too. This game has a lot of polish for a game jam game. Well done!

The AI is a little hard to beat, but it's rare for a multiplayer-focused jam game to also have a single player version, so you deserve huge bonus points for that!

Rock, Paper, Scissors Extreme! by hyperscope 2016-04-26T02:59:00

I like the concept. Putting the form changer onto a cooldown is a good idea for balance. Could have used a little bit of sound and music, and maybe switch up the levels and spawn locations in between matches with some random generation, but it's a good effort! Multiplayer is always super difficult to do in a jam. Good job!

Word Warrior by TheBreakfast 2016-04-27T14:35:00

@Icefallgames - we had initially planned on croudsourcing the words. We wanted to grab words and definitions from a Google Spreadsheet, and collect them from a Google Form, but we decided against it for profanity/offensive reasons. We're working on some usability upgrades but we might not have them done before the end of the jam since we both work full time.

Thanks for the feedback though! We're discussing how we can continue with the idea, and those are some helpful suggestions (especially the bit about training the player by scoping our dictionary to words the player will encounter).

@everyone else: thanks for the feedback. Sorry about the lack of dragons :P

Word Warrior by TheBreakfast 2016-04-28T04:39:00

@Gelisam, there's a dictionary available for people having trouble. http://tinyurl.com/gmdslvq

Thanks for playing. I agree regarding the dialog boxes. We've gotten a positive response so far so we've decided to go forward with the game. This is one of the key changes we're making.

A Sum Of All Parts by MattWoelk 2016-04-26T03:23:00

I really like the concept, but it's a little difficult to find where the hidden shapes are. Are there rules to the puzzle? It would have been neat if you had to look for the negative space to create a series of shapes, or maybe look through the holes in some shapes to uncover the invisible shapes.

The 3D positional sound was awesome, but it would have helped if it could be heard from just a little further away. The voice acting was great, and extremely clear. I also liked the way the music seemed to gradually introduce more elements as I discovered parts of the puzzle. It had incredible atmosphere too.

SEMILUCID by curtamyth 2016-04-27T03:41:00

Cool graphics, neat game play, and the music is awesome. It's like Pacman having a drug induced fever dream.

Vishnu Launch by PeachTreeOath 2016-04-28T02:04:00

Neat concept. Are these abilities based on the mythology of all of the characters? Neat idea, and tons of content for a jam game!

Shifter by Studiosaurus 2016-05-04T05:24:00

The first time I tried the music didn't load. Not sure if that's a glitch. Either way, once you figure out the mechanic it's a ton of fun! I got to 22.

After the 7th Day by okoto 2016-04-26T04:16:00

It's a cute idea! The noise at the end is surprisingly creepy. Neat idea, I don't really know if it fits the theme super well though. The art was awesome.

I definitely liked the joke about the sliding bath glitch lol.

Avoid the Wall Simulator 2016 by avoidwallcrew 2016-04-26T02:38:00

Hehe, I love the concept, and especially love the music! The graphics are great, and it's definitely remarkable that you've made a jam game that supports mobile. The controls do feel a little stiff, but other than that it's great. Overall, great job!

Mr. Purrgalar by KairosXIII 2016-04-27T23:10:00

I love the puzzle mechanic. Very interesting idea. The music works well, but maybe something a bit sneaky would have worked better for the mood / humor of it. The graphics are great (love the smoke effect) and the core mechanic is solid!

My only major complaint is that the "cat videos" button doesn't do anything :P

Super Groovin' by mgooch0190 2016-04-26T04:21:00

Haha really cute concept. Not enough people make rhythm games for the jam. Seems like they're really hard to pull off. Good humor, neat ideas here!
