Loved your game! My only complaint would be how slow the blocks drop
This is a really interesting take on tetris!
Kind od difficult to manipulate the position of the falling blocks. Other than that, super fun entry!
Great job on the game! It took me a little while to realise that I wasn't the one choosing the direction of the shot, when I understood that it was all good. I also thought I was doing pretty badly and then suddenly I had cleared the entire board due to the leftover pieces falling down and making lines - which was satisfying. The music and art style are both great. My old issues are that the pieces seemed to fall quite slowly and I rarely saw pieces that weren't just L shapes. The score text is also drastically different to the rest of the art style which is a bit jarring. Overall, wonderful effort.
Game's graphics are really nice, it looks amazing! I've enjoyed the game, but i think it needs more speed, or at least to increase the rate and speed of the pieces over time. Also being able to choose which way I want the pieces to go would be nice. I've found myself shooting at the air waiting for the random to generate the direction I want.
Thanks for the feedback everyone! In response I've sped up the game and added the ability to speed it up even more with the down arrow button (all before the end of the jam haha). Thanks for your time folks, I appreciate the feedback.
I really like the concept. But I think the random moves made it hard to control the left/right would just cancel it out and did feel like you had a much control. Would be nice to find a way where you still felt like you had enough control to move pieces where you wanted them.
Cool and very hard game! The Graphics, sound effects, and gameplay are outstanding, unique and very original. One of the best games I have played so far! I honestly have nothing to complain about except that I don't always know which was the block will move. It would also be greatly appreciated if you checked out my team's game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/crumble-1
I feel like there was a way to determine where the tetrimino was going to move when I shot it but I couldn't find it so it felt completely random to me. I think it has a lot of potential but the randomness I felt made it uninteresting to me. If there WAS a way to influence then simply writing it somewhere would have alleviated that frustration for me!
The random moves didn't really feel like they added anything to the gameplay though, they were just annoying. The upcoming moves display wasn't mentioned on the title screen, and it blends in too well with the instruction panel, so it took me a while to realize what was going on.
The chaining mechanics are interesting, it kind of encourages you to clear lines about halfway up and try to chain downwards. Although it doesn't seem like chains give a score multiplier, so that kind of cancels out the incentive, unless I just didn't notice.
I absolutely love the arcade-style instruction panel, makes me wish I had put more effort into my own game's UI.
Really excellent game.
Loved it! It took me a sec to figure out the part of the ui that showed the next shot, but once I found it I had tons of fun!
I have to agree that making the left/right controls random makes this very hard to play. I also managed to soft-lock the game, and I'm not entirely sure what I did. That said, the graphics work and the sounds are well polished, and the concept is solid.
This was an interesting take on Tetris
First I didn't understand how to influence the direction of shooting and I expected that I have to avoid colliding with a block. It is a polished game, even the graphics and menu look nice, considering that you developed it alone it is very well done!
I loved the music! I was SUPER confused about how the shots are what is determining direction, it's almost a little hidden in the corner. I suggest maybe presenting what the current shot is by coloring the laser? or adding an arrow graphic to the laser or under the ship? Otherwise the graphics, gameplay, theme, and presentation is all spot on, great job!
Tetris was of course a good genre of game to think for this theme, but I think you did a great job in reinventing it. Not only is it in adequation with the theme, but also it is fun and original. Also, the music, sound effect and graphics sold it to me. It looks kinda polished.
I think that you could totaly do something with it. Maybe the controls are a bit too random so this could be fixed, also rotating the blocks could be cool. (maybe thank to a power up ? you get X time being able to rotate the blocks when rewarded for doing something ?). That's the only things that i can think of about what you can add to make it even better ^^
Very polished game. I am not very convinced of the main mechanic, not being able to determine the movement of the pieces. Sometimes I caught myself shooting repeteadly to the piece trying to get it to a corner. Other than that, good entry, fit to the theme and with very polished art, music and movements.
Well done!
Very nice, instant 5 on the visuals. The game is fun, but I find it a little too RNG-heavy.
Ahh nice I really like the new take on tetris!
First of all this is really nicely polished, but like the others say the random selection between moving things left or right is pretty awkward, I think you should try to find a more rewarding mechanic that keeps the game challenging.
Nice Tetris twist, I have cross feeling about the random moves order, in one hand it makes it a bit hard to fully control the final result, but in the other I appreciate the challenge of the unpredictability. Being able to rotate the bricks would be nice. Good job!
I looove the smooth, aesthetic animations - mainly played your game because of them. Well done!
Challenging, relaxing and very polished game, great entry!
Got pretty far (1500 points) once I understood how to move the pieces well. Good fun!
Why is the score counter in Arial*rgh!*
The WebGL build froze after a while in both Firefox and Chrome on Linux Mint. The Windows version worked as expected.
Positives (kind of) out the way first (kind of). Certainly an original take on Tetris'ish mechanics. The visuals are fine, apart from the font issue... The programming is solid, apart from the webGL issue...
Back to negatives then, in *exciting* list form:
- The randomized shots are annoying. Moving a single tile (mino?) multiple times in the same direction requires aiming and shooting, side-stepping, shooting past it multiple times to get the right shot-type again, and repeating up to 8 times!
- Inability to see the upcoming minos.
- Lack of rotations results in holes everywhere and no way to fill them, because...
- Minos cannot be moved below the lower line.
- Minos breaking into pieces when successfully matching lines is neat and nearly makes up for prior two issues. *That's not a negative!*
Ok, fine. How to fix these problems:
- ~~Just remake Tetris~~
- No random shots. Randomness isn't thematic to begin with. Arrow keys move the ship; say, F and G shoot left and right; throw in rotations with H, if the falling pieces mechanic doesn't work out.
- Show the next mino and the position where it is going to appear in.
- Alternatively, relocate the ship below the play area, shooting past the stationary minos. Less thematic of course.
- If you actually want randomness it has to be manageable. Show multiple (4-8?) random shots at the same time and allow using any of them out of order. New shots appear with a delay.
Despite the ample bulletpoints, not bad!
Overall: *Above average (3.5)* Fun: *Finicky (2.0)* Innovation: *Above average (3.5)* Theme: *Good (4.0)* Graphics: *Good (4.0)* Mood: *Too reliant on music made by somebody else (n/a)*
this was very cool and very on theme. the only trouble i had was trying to get the pieces to go in the direction i wanted them too. but the mechanics lend themselves to some really cool gameplay, like having multiple pieces drop at the same time and moving all the pieces when you're just trying to move one.
I loved his game, he was a bit difficult for me, but I found the idea very creative, congratulations for the excellent work!
Nice game entry. My game crashed, but I think it's because I was holding the down arrow down too long. The graphics in this were nice, but as mentioned above I wish the score counter was in the same font you used for the instructions. It was hard to get used to, but I actually liked the random shots and trying to manage which one I was using.
@huvaakoodia I really appreciate the detailed feedback. I'll take a look into the WebGL issue. Thanks for checking the game out!
Had high expectations for this, the graphics look incredible. It's a shame that I was left feeling disappointed by the gameplay. I felt as though I was moving far too slowly and there was delay between me pressing the button and my character moving on the screen which didn't help things. The shooting felt very random as to which direction the block would move in, and because I felt I was moving too slowly I didn't seem to have enough time to correct my mistakes. It was frustrating to not be able to have some way to rotate the pieces falling which again added to my feeling of not being in control. There are some interesting ideas on display here, I think with some more playtesting during production you could have iterated out some of the issues holding it back. Hopefully you'll keep developing and will return for the next jam.
Pretty good take on the theme and tetris, this is not really my kind of stuff and the blocks being hard to handle don't make me play for a long time, but it's overall a cool game.
Nice Tetris clone. I was playing the Web GL version and it froze when I pressed the down arrow. I also made a puzzle game called Quadrata Minima for the Dare. Maybe you could try it, too.
I thought this was an interesting take on tetris because of the limitations on where the blocks could go. I think this game has a lot of potential because I could fantasize on how this game could expand towards being either more puzzle-heavy or shooter-heavy.
Oh btw, I love how you wrote the words. I would love to drink at a bar like that XD
Very cool! It took me a bit to figure out how to properly move the pieces, but once I got it I had a great time. Art and music were good, found myself just kinda grooving along. Nice work!
Nice game, Love how everything is balanced! Good luck, Don't forget to take a look at ours if you don't mind and see what it's like when we just focused on graphics in this game jam! Game Link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/spacelab-42a
