You absolutely nailed the theme lmao

Is the music supposed to be sync'ed with the arrows?

vcasadei 2020-10-06 21:33

The game is nice, but there is no correlation between the music and the arrows. Also I expected the music to be more "uptop". The concept is nice, but I believe there is some polishing and upgrades to be done. Nevertheless, it's fun to play and I liked the stick persons.

Nice concept, I appreciated the little stickman dancing. I think a big part of rhythm games is making it feel satisfying when you get a beat correct, so I think a bit of visual and audio feedback would make a great addition to this game, also let the player know when they miss or are out of time. Keep it up!

I love the music, but I wish the BPM matched the arrow presses, it's a bit awkward trying to move to the beat when the arrows desync. The little stick man was good fun though, I love his dance moves. Nice work!

Nice game. I like how the ceiling getting lower makes it more difficult, kinda weird it goes back up after some time. I think there should be a loose condition, like a game over once you miss X ammount of arrows. The game also needs feedback for hitting or missing arrows. And also the arrows aren“t on thempo.

egan-henderson 2020-10-14 03:48

I'm aware the arrows don't line up with the music quite right. The arrows are random and drop on a time interval, but I didn't get the music in until late so couldn't get it to be perfect. It annoys me too!

@weirdybeardyman Adding visual feedback to let the player know they hit it is a good idea that I definitely should have implemented!

@el-pepi I didn't want to put in a specific lose of win condition, so the player was actually stuck in a loop until they quit. And the box covering the arrows goes down and back up and down and up, looping forever. It just takes a long time and I don't expect anyone to play for that long, unless they really want to!

Almost danced mr. Stickman to corns %) Music is nice! Feels like the game became too hardcor too early (you are staying with ~ 1\5 of the screen after track played once). Good job making the game!

jezzamon 2020-10-14 04:15

Lol, I was really expecting the ceiling to just keep going down forever haha.

I think I agree that it is weird when the music desyncs. I don't have much experience with rhythm games but perhaps it's be possible to position the arrows based on how far into the song the game is. Something like [AudioSource.time](https://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/AudioSource-time.html)?

This game definitely needs something more if you were trying to make it a more engaging game -- perhaps something that you unlock as you play more?

Loved the stick man! ``` \o o \o/ o/ /| /|\ | |\ / \ / \ / \ / \

```
@jezzamon Using AudioSource.time might work, I'd have to look into that and see about figuring it out. This is the first time I've worked on a rhythm game so wasn't sure the best way to sync the arrows with the track. The game could definitely use some more content you're right and I appreciate the feedback!
Not much game, but what's here is fun!
matootsy 2020-10-14 08:32
Nothing new, it's a simple rythm game. And very easy ^^ But it works. For me the fact that the game never end is not enough for the theme, but There's no bugs, and for a first entry on the LD it's clearly honorable! It's already good to finish a game! Congrat to you guys!
flying-dog-fish 2020-10-14 21:52
The game has a nice polished look to it, but the visually lacking stick-figure dancer doesn't fit well with the rest of the game graphics. Gameplay is solid, but arrows not syncing with music takes a lot of fun out of it. I guess you'd have to either do some on-the-fly soundwave analysis or prerecord the sequence of moves either by hand or with some kind of tool.
rubixnoob13 2020-10-16 03:18
Pretty good entry, but I agree that the stick figure doesn't really fit with the rest of the graphics. Still, good entry :D
Very interesting choice of background for the arrows to go on. As it was pretty noisy and colorful it was kinda hard to see the arrows (btw. google and then try the "squint test"). Also I couldn't tell how well am I doing as the only way to tell was the score counter and there was no time to look at it. Usually the rhythm games have lots of flashing, particles, text bubbles and so on to let the player know. Also the timing wasn't very in sync with the music, but wasn't terribly out of sync either, which is kinda strange, but worked somehow :)
Also I think when the loop is endless, there should've been some losing condition, so you could actually beat your own records, if not highscore table of other users. This way it is just about how patient you are.
Solid entry though, you can definitely build upon this! Best of luck in future development! :)
i love DDR
Rhythm games typically beat map the arrows to the music, that would've added a lot to the experience.
rhoka 2020-10-18 07:48
Good work. Not much to add that others haven't said. It'd be nice to have the arrows be in time with the music. Also with it being endless, after a certain point people will just lose interest if nothing changes. Simply speeding up the song slowly over time or after each time it loops could add a bit of challenge to make it more interesting.
zachz 2020-10-19 06:05
Great use of the theme! I didn't want to stop, but the timing of the noted kind of faded in and out of the music and was tough to get right. Score got so high I wasn't sure how I'd lose. Maybe my dancing skills are too much for this world haha!
pickens-inc 2020-10-21 17:31
Good attempt! I am a sucker for rhythm games and so I'll always give them a try where I can find them. There are a number of constructive criticisms I have however that I think the others have already mentioned. The music is nice, and I love the little stickman and how his emotive state depends on getting the notes right.
However, a rhythm game pretty fundamentally lies on being able to accurately measure the player's ability to act to the beat of the music playing, and the arrows appearing are rarely synchronised. It took me a while to realise that, despite pressing the keys on the beat, I was losing points. I think this is the first flaw that should be addressed. There's also no development of the song, an almost harmonic intertia, which in a rhythm game means the game never gets any more difficult, and if it synchronised already then I think it'd be reallly easy.
Finalyl, as stressed by another commenter, the enjoyment comes from good satisfying feedback from getting the button correct. There being no feedback besides the incrementing of the score (which was rather hard to see but then I have poor eyes) meant that I didn't play for a super duper long time.
I think, however, that these are all really easy problems to fix, and that you should consider making a post-jam version with tweaks and QoL changes that could speedily improve it. Well done!
