The temple turned into a robot or something. :C

Overall lots of fun. Very satisfying shooting though it'd have been nice to have drop indicators on the reticle to help make use of it at distance.

This game is incredible, makes me envious that I wasn't the one to make it. I had a blast just shooting around and the ambience adds a ton to it. The fighting itself is quite a bit one-dimensional but it makes up for it with the strategy aspect of looking around and spotting the enemy before it spots you. The only gripe is that indeed the theme was not used, which is a shame because it doesn't seem like it would've been too hard to integrate. Nonetheless, amazing addition!

Incredible graphics and gameplay! I thought the style was amazing and there was a ton of nice polish.

cameronpenner 2023-05-03 03:16

Really cool art style! Also, I love it when other devs add voice overs to games, it's just a great way to add character! I noticed sometimes when turning that it would snap and turn me to random angles, it might have been that I was playing in browser, or something was up with my computer, but I thought I should mention it in case you have a fix.

The gameplay was neat though, I like that I could zoom in to check stuff out. The boss fight was really cool at the end too! I kept forgeting that I could sprint though :P so for a lot lf the boss fight I was just tanking damage before I remembered XD. Great game, I had a blast playing it :)

bauke-regnerus 2023-05-03 11:47

Loved the cool visuals, the gameplay is very pleasing! Voice overs are nice too. The final boss finishes it off. Great entry, thanks.

@ruruie @rradu @quinnster @cameronpenner @bauke-regnerus Thanks so much for the feedback everyone! :D

@ruruie I thought of doing that, but not sure how much it would help, and I think it kinda adds to the challenge having that trial and error (you get pretty good at it after a while)

@rradu I tried making the theme fit, but ended up focusing on making the game itself play well and look good and ran out of time for it xD

@cameronpenner The pause/unpause mechanic is broken in general. This was the first time I tried anything like this using the requestPointerLock function in javascript, and it's a mess to work with because it has issues with the player focusing and unfocusing the page, so yea don't really know how to fix those issues at the moment, sorry...

As an obscure pseudo-3d engine aficionado myself, I absolutely love the warped billboard look you went with. The subtle fog effect works really well, too. The sound design is a highlight as well, especially the shot and impact sounds(man, those are *meaty*!). The voice acting was an unexpected touch, definitely added to the atmosphere. There was an issue with some sounds simply not playing at times of high intensity, which I'm guessing is caused by the audio manager not having enough tracks allocated to keep up with the amount being requested(been there many times, lol). Great job overall!

daivyishere 2023-05-04 08:43

Shooting is extremly satisfying. Love the 2D perspective and billboard rendering, well done

chrissx2 2023-05-04 11:58

We need a full blown game with this art style!

erlioniel 2023-05-04 13:38

Hy Mateus, nice to see a game in quite unusual style from you. Not 100% sure why you came with your own WebGL game engine (not sure that any existing one won't fit), but probably it was worth to try & have fun with, right? The only technical issue I spotted is a problem when there is a lot of audio to play. Aside of that it's not a problem.

Retarding the game I must say that it's pretty charming (it a naturalistic-mecha way) with all those audio-logs (gosh did you find time to voice act for real? ) and scrap metal to collect. Really there is nothing to say bad about the gaming experience I've got, it's rock solid one.

Good job and it was nice to see you from such unusual side :v:

lone-wolf 2023-05-04 17:24

The voice acting was great, and I always love playing LD games with graphics like this. Nice job, and good luck with your game engine!

mateusboga 2023-05-04 17:32

@lone-wolf @erlioniel @chrissx2 @daivyishere @arbe Thank you all for playing and for the feedback!

My main goal this jam was to try out this new engine I made and see how it performed, so that's why I didn't use a normal engine :) If I have enough time, I'm planning on doing more games with it, and keep improving its performance. This jam was already super helpful by seeing other people test it out and pointing out the bugs. The biggest one I see is really the audio system, which was made haphazardly at the last minute and probably needs to be completely overhauled so it doesn't destroy the CPU. I'm probably going to need some help with that, because a lot of these concepts are new to me and I never ventured this far into programming before. This is one more side project to the list...

Thanks so much again ^^

Wow great visuals! It looks really sharp. The shooting sfx with the bullet zooming by feels great. Very cool setup, I could imagine just wandering around in the world for a while looking for things. Feedback wise perhaps just more of a confirmation of when you've hit an enemy. Great job!

tricky-fat-cat 2023-05-05 18:35

A really solid submission. I adore old-school look and really sleek movement with great music and gameplay loop. Well done.

wetburritosupreme 2023-05-05 19:44

Great entry, the art style is such a good match for the apocalyptic feel, and the fight music was a great addition. Ran great on my ancient mac using Firefox:)

saltysa 2023-05-05 20:33

I can't believe this wasn't 3d! this is so impressive

I loved the atmosphere, and the music that swells up during battles as well as the voice over.

The only thing I'd like to change would be to automatically pick up scraps from enemy tank, so I wouldn't have to mash E

simon-rahnasto 2023-05-07 13:00

The first thing I though when I started the game was "OH WOW". I literally tabbed out of the game to type that, now I will continue and actually play the game

Ok now I have played it and I am really happy I found this gem. One of the most unique and awesome entries I have played this jam, top marks all around. The style of the game is really nice, the voice acting is incredible and the rest of the audio is great as well.

Every jam there are a few games that you will remember when it is all over, this is one of them.

:trophy:

bartalomew 2023-05-08 16:06

looks and plays amazing, very well done! you set yourself a challenge and won it by miles! so many details I love about this, the art, the fact it's completly 2D, the voices, the feel of the controls. great, great job!

wendel-scardua 2023-05-09 20:03

The pseudo-3d thing is really well done :) I'm only a bit saddened that the audio logs don't have subtitles, though (but that's most a "me" problem I guess 😅)

mateusboga 2023-05-09 20:48

@wendel-scardua Thanks! The lack of subtitles isn't a you problem. I planned on making them but ran out of time. I plan on putting them in the post-jam version. This is probably why I never do voiceacting because I'm thinking about the acessibility and translation work. Putting crucial info in a poor-quality voiceover was also not the best idea I admit xD

However, I did transcribe all of the Logs and put the text at the bottom of the Itch.io page, in case someone really wanted it, so that's gonna have to do for now.

@aeveis @saltysa @bartalomew @simon-rahnasto @wetburritosupreme @tricky-fat-cat Thank you all so much! :D

jezzamon 2023-05-13 17:03

A bit too happy for my tastes...

jezzamon 2023-05-13 17:08

Just kidding! This is amazing, well done! Congrats on making this!

Don't really have any suggestions, other than agreeing that subtitles would be nice for the dialog, but totally fair to not get that implemented for a jam.

Oh also yay for HTML5 game engines!
