LD35 — Shapeshift

windowframe by managore 2016-04-19T19:10:00

This is fantastic! I saw the gifs on twitter beforehand and I had no idea how much was your machine, and how much was your game. Turns out that just the right amount was the game. I got stuck on one of the 2 stake levels, but I'll be coming back to this later to try and beat it.

I couldn't to think of some critical feedback to give, but I can't think of a thing. There were a couple of graphical glitches at times, but considering how the game I'm a) not sure it wasn't an intentional part of the game, and b) completely willing to forgive it for the crazy coding that got something like this working in the first place. Best game of the jam for me.

Vogue Ninja by TijmenTio 2016-04-18T16:26:00

Really amazing looking game, the graphics and animations flow so nicely. I love how the squid creatures bounce around and dodge attacks forcing you to aim and time your attacks carefully rather than just spamming them (which I was doing at first). The audio was nice too, I liked how the music changed tone and tempo when a squid spotted you and the sound effects of pretty much everything fit well too.

I didn't get to experience the boss fight unfortunately, I got lost behind the tress and in dead ends in the forest, and didn't have a clue how to progress. Really liked what I experienced though.

Captain Shape by tiffi 2016-04-18T21:24:00

Fun game, it's been a while since I've done anything for the Android but I imagine it's still quite the achievement to make a game for that in 2 days, especially with the leaderboards (which I reached 3rd place on when I played it earlier. Woo!).

Can't really think of any issues. I was going to complain that I couldn't figure out how I was shooting squares instead of circles, and couldn't make triangles appear at all, but then I noticed that you explained all that here. An in-game help screen to explain this too would be nice.

Therianthropy by technocf 2016-04-18T12:06:00

I ended up ragequitting because of the spikes, but that's often the case with me and platformers. Only criticism I could come up with is that the jumping doesn't quite feel right, it starts and stops too quickly.

Galaxy Shift by KamikaziUk 2016-04-18T11:47:00

Really nice game. Only frustration I had was I kept on picking items up in a way that made me more stick-like than ball-like, which made moving around a little tricky. Other than I really enjoyed it.

Generations by Rother Games 2016-04-18T15:55:00

I wasn't able to finish this (got stuck on the puzzle near the 3rd block of water), but so far it feels like a very nice game, although deceptively tricky. I really enjoyed the graphics and asthetics, I didn't expect the papercraft art style to work as well as it does.

Only criticisms I have is that the music is a bit sounds a bit too repetitive, which would be fine, except the violin (or chello?) are frequent enough that it gets much after a while. It also doesn't seem to quite loop right, there's this weird jump in the pitch when it does. Other than that, I really enjoyed it. I'll probably come back to it post-voting to try and get past that puzzle and try to finish it.

Fast Dungeon by Andreas Brandt 2016-04-19T19:32:00

I would've liked to play this more, but the controls were far to sensitive for my liking. Because you continue to jump while holding down the space bar I kept jumping immediately after landing on a platform and falling into the insta-death spikes.

I liked that your stats continued to grow through each life, made later tries a lot easier, but was still frustrating to play through the early levels again to get to where I stopped.

Turbo Transform by Robber 2016-04-18T16:07:00

Massively enjoyed this game, the graphics, animations, and audio fit together so well. You've made a damn good game for such a short amount of time.

The only thing I could find missing is no way to return or retry a level I've failed at. I got to level 4/5 on my 2nd attempt, and I didn't want to have to redo the early slower levels again.

Shape Rave by MintArcade 2016-04-18T16:53:00

Tricky to learn how to play at first, but I think that's a given for me with this style of game. Enjoyed it once I got past the initial learning curve though, although I couldn't seem to pick up the power-ups for some reason? Not sure if that's a bug or if I'm just missing something.

Listen and Shift by Goutye 2016-04-18T15:32:00

Fun game, kept stumbling over the rules towards the end (as expected). The music and graphics are quite nice too, they seem to fit the focus of the game well. Took me a while to figure out what you meant by "the dog is chasing the cat". I assumed that meant there would be a cat before any dogs, or maybe a dog after each cat. But instead it means that a cat appears after any dog?

Transformers by ito123456789 2016-04-18T15:04:00

Nice little game. The start was pretty sudden though, took me a while to realise my tanks were in the corner and I wasn't just on a long fancy intro screen. Definitely like the mechanic of focusing on moving your tanks to dodge the bullets, and letting them handle the shooting. It felt a little like a less punishing version of cannon fodder.

I really enjoyed this game, although I did get a little annoyed at times when my tanks tried to shoot through the walls rather than at the tanks that they could actually hit.

There seems to be a hitbox issue with the boss tank though, most of bullets seemed to pass through it unless they hit it dead centre?

Goons by gogo199432 2016-04-24T11:29:00

First time I played this game I was surprised at how generic the gameplay was, especially considering the work that went into the graphics and audio. Then I realised that I could change enemies into the objects I was picking up. The game became pretty damn awesome after that.

HEXCORP- The Shape People by Nebulaic Toaster 2016-04-18T18:58:00

Weird game, but strangely enjoyable. Was very thrown by a couple of crazy requests that came in alongside the 3 and 5 sided shapes. Wasn't expecting the ending either. Music seemed simple at first, but I think it's going to stick in my head for a while.

One thing that bothered me was the disparity between the size of the speech bubbles and the size of the text inside it. Unless this was intentional to add the weird feeling, in which case, nice work!

The Government Job by WizzardMaker 2016-04-18T18:46:00

I enjoyed this, but haven't managed to kill all 6 targets yet (shot while hiding behind a building both times...). I'm not sure what the benefit of certain disguises are over others, other than some of theme being unsuitable for certain areas. It seems that it takes a lot less time to transform into trash, than it does into either a car or a tree though. Is there any reason to not just disguise yourself as trash all the time?

Starship Janitor by studdert249 2016-04-18T11:29:00

A bit of a tough one, couldn't come close to finishing it.

Thoughts on the design. I ended up running away from enemies a lot while I tried to circle around and pick them off, and noticed that they kept bunching together. At one point I had maybe 4 of them taking up the same spot. Also, something to indicate when a small alien is about to change back would be helpful. I often tried to collect one just before it grew back into full size and took a chunk of health off.

The Professional Shapeshifter by DivineOmega 2016-04-18T12:15:00

A perfect simulation of what my typical interview experiences have been like (minus the shapeshifting). A harrowing look in my future as I'm confronted by obscure question after question, never able to come up with the perfect answer to satisfy them. They never even asked about my past experience, or to demonstrate my shapeshifting ability.

On a serious note, I really liked this game. Only issue I found was the textbox at the bottom kept flickering on then off briefly when there wasn't a question for me to answer.

Exhuman by Arvydas 2016-04-19T20:06:00

This game looks and sounds brilliant, but I really struggled with the controls. I tried a few times, but I was swarmed by everyone every time before I could kill even one of the boars.

Combunation by Petya 2016-04-19T20:11:00

Really enjoyed this game, although I struggled at first as the game just started and I didn't know the controls. Once I figured them out it got pretty good, I enjoyed the different way each of the creatures played, and how the game's difficulty ramped up as you played. I did keep getting stuck on/in walls though, which made me a sitting duck for the robots.

ShapeShift by Doombox 2016-04-19T20:25:00

The graphics are really well done, and it looks like you spent some time getting the timing of the puzzles just right. It gets quite difficult to control after the first few levels though, as you can't move the cube in a very straight line.

This Dungeon Is Alive by sndr 2016-04-19T19:20:00

Very atmospheric, games like this always end up creeping me out. The red messages and sound effects kept me tense, waiting for some jump scare that didn't come, making it even more tense. Completely surprised by the book at the end, and the exit I ended up taking. Not sure if all my lipstick marks helped at all, if I just got really lucky.

Block Shift by Templar3lf 2016-04-18T10:53:00

Enjoyed the game, although it felt a little too slow paced for to me start with. Maybe have a selectable difficulty at the start with sets how quickly the pace increases?

Portalshift by Rakowu 2016-04-18T21:18:00

I'm terrible at precision jumping and couldn't finish stage 4, but I really enjoyed the rest of the game. I like how distinct the different creatures look, not just the colours, and the animations looked really nice too.

Can't really think of much to fault. The only thing I can maybe come up with is on stage 3 when you're in the pit full of blocks, I hadn't touched the pile on the far right, and I had to wait while they were destroyed one by one before I could progress instead of just ploughing through them. That's pretty nit-picky though and hardly a major issue. Nice work :)

LD46 — Keep it alive

HEAL ME PLZ by Pietro Ferrantelli 2020-04-21T15:33:52Z

This is dang impressive work, I can't believe you managed to make this all in 3 days! The premise is excellent, I tend to play the healer class and it often feels like running after children like a scared parent to stop them from getting themselves killed. I love the artwork and animations, it looks very professional and flows extremely nicely! The music is nice too, really helps set the move, and the sound effect feel nice and chunky when you kick off the special moves. I'm not sure if there's much progression in terms of monsters, or if the game can actually be beaten? I managed to get the blonde fighter stuck in the top wall in both my playthroughs, and that made it a bit hard to progress any further. Damn good game, I really enjoyed it :)

CYBER-SHIELD by Megalink 2020-04-21T12:22:36Z

Nice and frantic, controls felt really nice too. The instructions weren't super clear to me at first, I didn't realise that I had to hold down Space, then Left-click to thrust the shield, but I figured it out on my second playthrough. Really liked the graphics too, nice pixel art that that suited the game well. The music and sound effects were good and felt very appropriate to the theme and aesthetics you have going on. Not a lot to criticise with this game really, I quite enjoyed it and would happily play it again.

Lost Goblins by pndaa 2020-04-21T13:11:03Z

Some really interesting puzzles here, took me a while to figure out how to get past the last bit on Collaboration. The music was nice and ambient, the ideal sort of thing you want when trying to figure out the puzzle, and I liked all the little sound effects accompanying each action (the spikes one especially). The graphics were good, it was always clear what was going throughout the games, never any deaths caused by my confusion there, only from not thinking ahead or knowing what a lever would do. I would've liked to see something done with the ending screen, it felt a little bland after I saved all those goblins (and accidentally killed the rest).

With a little refinement and more levels this is the sort of game I'd happily have paid money for.

Guardian of the Seas by UberPuPy 2020-04-21T12:35:58Z

The graphics were nice, but a little hard to make out with all the ships so small. Audio was good too, I liked the beeps letting me know that something had happened and I needed to pay attention. I didn't really understand what I was doing for the first half of the game, even when arresting criminals or rescuing crashes I couldn't keep track of which ones I had or what exactly I was supposed to do with them afterwards.

Guardian of the Seas by UberPuPy 2020-04-21T20:38:35Z

@uberpupy Ah, I was thinking that number meant the number I'd dropped off already, or the number that I needed to return to get an upgrade. Didn't realise that was how many I had on board.

FIRE-MUST-BURN by TheCze 2020-04-21T15:55:10Z

Really interesting idea having a raging fire as your health meter, its a very novel concept. Graphics were good and clear, I could always understand what was going on, although I would've enjoyed seeing more variety between the different trees. Sound design was good, the axe swinging had a good meaty *thunk* to it when you hit the tree, and the music felt appropriate for a runaway fire. I had some trouble figuring out how close I had to place the logs to extend the fire, and I think I ended up dropping them far closer than I should have done. Overall, a very nice game and glad I got to play it :)

Plant Fren by toad 2020-04-25T14:19:54Z

Way too difficult for me to understand what I'm doing unfortunately. I know this game is a supposed to be a mystery and you don't want to give everything away, but I could do with a little more information on things you can do, even if I don't know what I *must* do.

Uptime? Nope. by ygrichman 2020-04-21T12:10:16Z

The graphics are cute, but the game progressed very slowly for me. I liked the idea of juggling the different data centre requirements, but none of them reached levels where I really needed to push myself. If things were a little faster I would've felt more pressure and been a bit more engaged with the game. The hitboxes felt a little bit clunky too, I needed to back up and approach areas again so I could pick up or use the items. Also I'm not quite sure what the smoke signified? Did it mean that something needed replacing in one of the servers, or just that it was undergoing a lot of load and needed upgrades?

FIREGUARD by Puszkee 2020-04-25T13:26:51Z

A bit tough for me, I couldn't survive past a minute, even on easy :(. I liked the graphics and animation, the player movement one especially is quite cute and the camera movement was nice too. The balance of using the twigs as weapons vs fuel was interesting, and I like it when you have to consider things like that, especially when you're having to do it while dodging around enemies. I would have liked it if I could still feed a stick to the fire after setting it aflame, as I kept accidentally doing that when I needed to get the fire up and burning again. The music and sound effects were great, fit the game well and you had them for everything :). I did notice a weird bug on the main screen, where I only click the lower half of the Play button? Not quite sure what's caused that.

Both or Nothing by victor_reiner 2020-04-21T12:47:23Z

Very nice feel to this game, the shrinking flame and the slowly slumping figure were excellent indicators of how well you were doing on each front. I liked that almost all elements that would normally shown in the HUD were done in this way to make the game feel more natural. The graphics were nice, and the crackling of the fire and dry cough really added to the feel. My only complaint would be that the game mechanics themselves felt very random, as most items were only suitable for either burning or eating, with just a few exceptions. Despite that, the look and feel of the game kept me playing a few times until I was finally rescued.

Now That's A Cool Sun by Raxe612 2020-04-21T14:53:27Z

A very cool sun there indeed, doesn't even feel the need to tell me their backstory ;). Took me a while to figure out the orbit mechanics (namely that you speed up when close and really slow down when far away). I feel a bit bad for making my planet's population freeze to death. but they seemed to get over it quickly enough. Mechanics wise I liked the idea of the second meter once your planet sprouts up life, but it felt a little too generous to have much effect and I never came close to hitting zero, even when perched at -300 degrees while I waited for a nasty set of asteroids to move by. A bit more variance in the last stage would have been nice too. Graphics were simple and effective, but I would've liked a few more ambient background things such as other planets. I did really like the end screen though, it seems that's the bit that's often forgotten about. Nice work!

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

ULTRA BAE by Jezzamon 2018-05-10T06:29:01Z

I thought the Baedar bit was irrelevant until I read the comments here, I did wonder why my weapons seemed to change occasionally. The gameplay is fun, but I die way too often with only 2 health. Maybe that's just my lack of skill though?

I did like the graphical effects with the lights and shadows, but the game ran super jittery on my machine. It ran much smoother when I reduced the resolution, but then I couldn't read all the text :(.

Captain Bauldy's Fun House by jharler 2018-05-06T22:24:33Z

Well, you managed to find a way to make a horror game featuring children feel even creepier, by adding in children's educational games. I swear I got chills when the kid's puzzle asked me what the colour of my blood was. I want to play the game through to the end, but a) I'm terrified at playing games like this, and b) The game crashes instantly when I click on a door to try and open it (even on the fixed version).

Nice game, but I'll watch @Jupiter_Hadley finish playing it instead of venturing into that house again.

Captain Bauldy's Fun House by jharler 2018-05-09T05:57:16Z

@jharler Copied the log file for you. Couldn't see anything noteworthy myself, but hopefully you can spot something :)

Captain Bauldy's Fun House by jharler 2018-05-17T07:24:41Z

@jharler Played through the game twice more, but didn't encounter any more crashes. I did get to finish it this time, and to answer the question at the very end: Yes, you did. Very much.

Jeff From Accounting by Almax 2018-04-28T08:56:09Z

Really enjoyed this, I didn't think someone would be able to find a new way to approach the concept of Typing of the Dead. The only thing I felt it was missing was something at the end to show you've won other than restarting.

Crash Crops by lonewookie 2018-04-30T05:55:49Z

Not too shabby, I really liked the concept of melding farming with breakout. I would've liked a little more ball control with the paddle though, but other than that and a few physics issues which you've already mentioned I thought it worked pretty well.

Someone Is Wrong On The Internet by huminaboz 2018-04-27T05:49:01Z

I liked this. It started off so steady that I thought I'd just breeze through it, but I was twitching by the time I reached the final website. I beat it, but it would probably take someone a little younger to get any further. I couldn't tell if the levelling up changed anything, or if it were more thematic? I would've liked a few extra moments to look at the character art of my new opponents, things moved so fast that I didn't have a lot of time to look at them before frantically trying to match up words.

SneakBeat by Carraka 2018-05-09T06:13:37Z

I liked this, and I usually hate DDR-style games because I'm so terrible at them. This was much more sedate though, and I really liked the slower pace making you choose which colours to react to rather than just desperately mashing all the buttons.

Didn't realise there were multiple endings at first, wondering if there's supposed to be a way to ask the question about the bracelet that I see pop up, but nothing seems to be working. I definitely appreciate the secret behind the red arrows though.

Check, Please! by swav_gav 2018-04-30T06:17:17Z

I enjoyed the concept, but I found the mouse sensitivity too low to enjoy playing it for long. As with others I kept failing on the wine-pouring stage, not sure why it's not letting me progress?

Black Hole Zoo by Weekend Panda 2018-05-09T05:52:33Z

I really enjoyed this. The concept was total bananas, and that just made the whole situation funnier. The dialogue was great, you even managed to spin some humour in throughout the credits.

Couldn't find much to criticise. Having audio would make a huge difference though, not only background music but some sort of sound effect when clicking on the machine so I'm hearing something other than my mouse clicking. I also had trouble clicking on the cookie sometimes. Not sure if this was due to issues with the collider, or me just being a bit too frantic when trying to stop those black holes from devouring the world.

Super Velociraptor Party by Colthor 2018-04-28T08:43:18Z

Love the concept of a single-player party! Felt pretty bad for the poor, lonely velociraptor. Took me a few tries to get a feel for for the hang-gliding mini-game, but then I just kept on going. Is there an end to that area?

Super Velociraptor Party by Colthor 2018-04-30T06:02:55Z

@Colthor I thought of it as a single-player "last man standing" kind of game anyway, so that works :)
