Beautiful cover art and overall a pretty good idea.

I would definitely work more on the art within the game and maybe make "Present-Time" mask around the character round instead of rectangle.

And because it's Game Maker it can't be easy to make a good platformer there, built-in physics of the engine are just not good. If you like making this genre of games I would recommend Construct 3. It's perfectly equipped for the job.

Good Luck!

Forest Survivors by donvermo 2023-10-06T14:24:18Z

Sweet little game. Bear is such a cutie! :bear:

Too easy for me though, I died on 30k because I just wanted to see what happens when you lose. I would add some simple animation for the character there.

Thorn-shrubs should definitely have some way of damaging you, especially considering there's two types of them. Difficulty scaling could be more steep. It gets repetitive once you understand that you only have to look out for falling things that target your last location so adding more dangerous obstacles and improving scaling is the key.

Loved the temporary upgrade into lawnmower :)

Well done!

Tables 95 by Steven Garberg 2023-10-12T17:52:07Z

A fellow vintage PC game. Nice little game :)

Homework was more depressing than Unity and so I got rid of it :sunglasses:

Greatest Sandwich by Fis 2023-10-02T23:20:16Z

Perfect cooking game and nice UI :) I would make collision easier though, if you miss the plate it just falls down and you have to start over.

Face the Dice by Bastienre4 2023-10-03T23:58:38Z

I thought It wasn't my type, but boi was I wrong! Very addictive once you understand the rules. Well done!

I second request for online mode :)

Candy Catcher by HagamosVideojuegos 2023-10-12T17:41:56Z

Love the idea and neat stylish art :) How painful it was when finger kept getting stuck at the exit :joy:

Work Until You're Undead by Diego Escalante 2023-10-05T10:38:29Z

It froze the first time I tried to load it, but worked on second attempt.

Sweet little game and I like what you did with the atmosphere. It felt like I was stuck in a mall store or something. Escaped in 1:20

Well done!)

SpaceTime by Thenerdster 2023-10-03T09:16:14Z

19:025 score. I love platformers, I think controls could use more responsiveness, because it felt like I could do better, but jump sometimes didn't work if I tried to do it as soon as I landed on the platform. P.S. I know they're called orbs, but I called them pearls :)

Shot in the Dark by GhastlyMicrowave 2023-10-04T20:55:18Z

Minimalistic idea perfectly executed. I scored 2800 once I figured out how to play. Love it!

Mechanizyn by Lincolnsalles 2023-10-18T01:34:26Z

Very cool game. Wish there was more levels, I was just buzzzing up for more :)

I was secretly hoping someone would make a fly or mosquito type of game.

Hope you add more content in the future :)

Good Luck!

NanoSpace by Hermetix 2023-10-04T00:16:52Z

I love the idea. Something I didn't see much of. Art is really nice, but a bit too much bloom.

Barely, but I was able to score 21 :) I would just spawn projectiles on button click or remove the delay to start firing. Nanoworms in the middle of intense firing can be very difficult to distinguish. They also sometimes spawn near the end of the tube so you can't kill them.

Furniture Frontier by PixelTaku 2023-10-04T00:50:50Z

Neat (or is it?) retro cowboy game aesthetics which I like a lot and well played on the theme!

Had to connect gamepad 'cause keyboard controls are too tough for me.

At first I got confused by furniture that it isn't about it standing on the red area, but about image overlapping it 'cause of tilemap which is even more fitting considering the selected style. Great job!)

Pack Your Ship by SpaceyLake 2023-10-17T19:00:58Z

Really liked the game.

After a first few quick deaths, I quickly realized what's what and felt comfortable playing it. Unfortunately I couldn't get further than 16. I had fully loaded guns, but enemies approached from inconvenient angle and destroyed my right engine after which my ship flew painfully slow and couldn't make it to the station.

I wish there was a way to buff rotation speed of the turrets. They're too slow))

Escape The Phantom Seascape! by Tao Yuanyue 2023-10-17T19:47:20Z

Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure (HOPA) in a hand-drawn style, creepy scenes with nightmarish vibes! That sells it even to someone like me who's not much for the genre.

I did found some mechanics to be unintuitive. Crossword puzzle for one, I assembled some random stuff just to see what happens and couldn't return it back to what it was to try again so effectively got stuck there.

I think also UI/UX needs more love, icons look rough around the edges with white outline.

All in all, I hope you update it and make it even better! Good luck to you

Bathtub Buccaneers by Cloverfall 2023-10-03T10:18:49Z

Loved aesthetics and I am a sucker for naval combat!

Unlimited Space Shawarma by SID37 2023-10-06T15:07:18Z

Probably the best game I played here so far! Very immersive! Even has somewhat of dream-like feel to it. I got everything, thought it was just endless survivor after that, but finally a member of the rescue team saved me :rocket:

Great job!

STELLAR LIMITS by obittner 2023-10-03T15:56:14Z

Sweet little game. Pleasant space ambient :rocket: There was once a problem taking off the planet, I got stuck with my ship and inventory grids wouldn't close. Not sure how to reproduce.

It's even surprising to see a game in Unreal here, kinda overkill of an engine in this case, but hey, whatever gets the job done. :sunglasses:

P.S. Like all your names under the title. It sounded in my head like one cool exotic name, maybe one pronounced with Spanish-esque accent :)

Submarine Escape by brick2face 2023-10-04T19:17:44Z

I would make screen scroll more apparent, because currently it scrolls only when mouse is off screen. Didn't expect Point & Click here so that was a pleasant surprise. Well done!)

Crime Critters (Rob the British Museum) by Pen Island Games 2023-10-17T18:00:17Z

Amazing artstyle and nice play with the theme.

It would seem I am too clumsy for this line of work, I would probably break the whole thing instead

And my sorry partner in crime was absolutely unable to handle IJKL controls

I'm rating by post-jam version though. I'm not sure how it works here nor care, I think it's fair to judge by game's current state rather than it's original release state as I rather judge by design as intended, not design as managed due to time constraints. It's not a contest  Anyways, I digress :) Well done!

And do I hope you're planning to evolve this idea, I definitely see myself playing it on consoles with plus 2 partners! ;)

SINISTER ELEVATOR by ScaryTreeGames 2023-10-17T18:29:42Z

Loved the creepy atmosphere. I wish spiders crawled from different angles as right now you can pretty much repeatedly shoot to the left and right side to clear every floor.

Made it to the 25th Floor :)

Installing Engine by Kinami 2023-10-03T10:31:29Z

"pledge my first born child to your company" sounds about right xD

Nice game and legit OS simulator. Installation steps may have triggered my PTSD :)

Payment Comes on Friday by Tetracold 2023-10-17T21:35:20Z

Amazing game with a stunning artwork and simple, but perfectly done design. I love how interactive it is. Incredibly polished!

A bit sad that truck pushes you out. It would be hilarious to drive away and receive "Gave Up" game over :) Also noticed that water doesn't get refilled sometimes, maybe that's deliberate.

I would suggest adding a score (In time or better even Total Cargo Weight delivered) and show it when you lose.

Also I realized you may do nothing, but walk left and right, and you won't lose water, but gain it instead which is odd. So I did exactly that delivering absolutely nothing. Then I decided to deliver one truck and got stuck in a black screen (lost HP only 'cause cargo got damaged). I recorded and published as unlisted to maybe help you reproduce it somehow and figure out what's wrong.

https://youtu.be/a-HQpQ2uXPA

And that's another one showing slacker play style.

https://youtu.be/X8bbGZyM84A

Do looking forward for updates!

P.S. The Guy becoming Uncanny meme lmao

Work Space by Tunicata 2023-10-06T14:02:05Z

Loved it! I like how you played with the theme and put aesthetic-first decisions in your game-design which I adore. Timing is a bit hard at the start, but once you get used to game mechanics it's very fun to play. For bug reports. For some reason phone didn't always respond to taps.

Spidy by 0xrainbow 2023-10-03T08:58:06Z

Junkie spider lol. This type of game makes me nostalgic about games my friends and I made 10 years ago. Cool game :)

appendage bedlam by moldovanul 2023-10-18T10:59:33Z

Nice game, but I couldn't finish the second labyrinth as I got stuck and none of the ruptures (black holes) allowed me to leave.

Sword could use some animation when you're using it. It was unclear to me at first that I had to hold button to actually deal any good damage.

Well done! Hope you update it later.

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-03T08:17:20Z

@0xrainbow @thenerdster Apologies, for some reason LDJam seems to fail to upload any files from me. I added a link to the game now :)

*Uploaded Windows version. It doesn't like my VPN apparently

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-03T10:23:56Z

@kinami Thanks ^_^ When it will work correctly - you should always be able to delete Corrupted files. Sticky Notes are sorta quests. If you Delete what user likes - he'll hit the PC, or if you Keep what he doesn't want anymore. However it doesn't work due to a bug which I promise to fix later and make game actually fun to play.

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-03T23:09:16Z

@hermetix @pixeltaku Thanks a lot :) Yes, these problems are known and I'll be working on a fix. There will be an overhaul gameplay and UX wise, cause I pretty much rushed the last hours trying to make the original idea work, but there just wasn't enough time so it fell flat.

I am incredibly glad that time invested into aesthetics paid off

Sticky Notes are just filler-jokes and quests. I'll be sure to make the split between the two more apparent.

P.S. AI Art was a sad necessity, I spent last two hours assembling it all together along with SFX. PC banging noise is actually me hitting the table and I have more fun stuff coming in that department :smirk:

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-04T11:13:55Z

@zach-rouhana @nullcode Thanks much for playing! Just yesterday I made a plan for update focused entirely on making it work and make improvements all around (mainly UX). Hopefully I'll have time to get it done by the end of the week. I'll be sure to notify everyone who played when update is out :)

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-05T09:45:02Z

@diego-escalante @utopia @donvermo @he-li Thanks for feedback. About stuck keys and no image thing - I reckon that was due to the same bug that breaks the game. Workin' on it :sunglasses:

Changelog for our major v2 update. Hopefully this Sunday :muscle: :coffee:

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-12T16:58:18Z

Update V2 is here!

It's now a proper game of attention and memory!

MENU + There is now MENU before the actual game. There you can browse user-favourite files - OuttaSpace (Start Game), Instructions (How to's), Credits (We who made the thing), Wallpapers (Switch Background Image), Loginswtch (Randomize username), Music (Toggle Music On/Off), X, Discord & Telegram (our links)

FILES + Filename now doesn't stand out from the rest of the text, because gameplay-wise it only really serves as additional visual cue. + SYSTEM files (you shouldn't delete any files that belong to it) + User Name and File Type texts have merged. It goes like "Image (Username)" now for better UX. + Files now show their date of creation (e.g. 05 June 1981). Year is quest related (see Sticky Notes). + Corrupted files have their image and contents distorted. That's the only way of knowing a file is corrupt. + Improved name randomizer

DRIVE + Drive max capacity upped to 40000 KB (think of all the doggo.pngs it can store?!!) + Drive can never be empty, because SYSTEM files also weight something and if you try to delete them - you'll crash the PC. So it should be impossible to get it under 4800 KB (exactly 12% of the total space) + Files are now actually saved on the drive. Files user downloads get in the queue and can be reviewed later. + When you lose, game doesn't just start over. You keep some downloaded files. About 37.5% of files you downloaded would be lost, about 12.5% of files you downloaded would become Corrupted. + If User can't download a file, would try searching for a file that would fit into the remaining space which saves from unnecessary loss of Health.

DIFFICULTY + Before gameplay begins it has a little loading time now + User will download files faster over time, so you have less and less time to make a decision, but it has a fair max limit. + Corrupted files appear often at first, but become more of a rarity over time. + Chance of Quest Note being replaced with Filler-Notes drops + With time more Quest Notes unlocked. Green & Blue Note Quests get more complicated. + Notes fall down faster and get replaced quicker + PC receives more damage from hits + If you don't play for a while - PC enters Sleep Mode (so basically Game Over)

CONTROLS + Game supports Mouse & Touch controls + You can now also use ENTER (to keep) and DEL (to delete) if you want to be more authentic. + Use Arrows for navigation in the MENU. + Use Enter to confirm your choice in the MENU. + Backspace to leave in Menu. + Mouse: Minimize button - "closes windows", but in OuttaSpace.exe applies a minor glitch FX unless your PC is already glitching. + Mouse: Restore Down button - applies a minor glitch FX unless your PC is already glitching. + Mouse: Close button - it closes any other window, but using it in OuttaSpace.exe would crash the PC.

STICKY NOTES (Quests) + Sticky Notes. Are put randomly only with filler-notes at first, but as time goes Quest Notes begin to appear. 1) Yellow Note - preserve files of specific type (Text / Image / Video / Music / Archive / Program). 2) Green Note - preserve files of specific format (e.g. "jpeg","txt" and so so on). Over time it would add even more formats (up to 3) 3) Blue Note - preserve files that begin with a specific letter (A-Z). Over time it would add even more letters to preserve (up to 3) 4) Red Note - preserve files of specific year (1975-1984) + User now actually puts new sticky notes instead of simply unrealistically rewriting them + Sticky Notes fall off after a random period of time.

ART & AUDIO ! AI Generated Images have been completely removed from the game ! + Game now uses pixel art icons for files. It makes PC look more aethentic and even improves performance - mainly game's loading time. + User panel now shows current Day & Month, but year stays fixed at 85. + Reworked UI for the Game which should make playing the game easier + Improvements to GlitchFX - now it's even more epic. + Darkness on edges of background image so it feels more immersive in Fullscreen + Added Music & more SFX

Letting you all know that I have finally updated the game ^_^

It's a big step from what it was. Please check it out

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-12T22:27:36Z

Hotfix V2.1

I know I just released V2, but I noticed a few things I could quickly improve.

CHANGELOG + Downloading now also depends on file size (starts with only 0.01% and gets up to 0.1%). There is also fixed downloading rate (8 KB - 96 KB). So it gets quite fast in the late game. + Green & Blue Quests in their final difficulty get up to 4 files now instead of 3 before. + Tweaked Difficulty Scaling - Quests get more difficult slower + When first opening the game user would boot PC automatically after 8 seconds. Just to avoid confusion some players might have facing a black empty screen. + Fullscreen support for Desktop + Fixed a bug where user would/wouldn't hit file when meeting requirements of a Sticky Note Quest + Fixed random BSOD bug from deleting default files (at least I think I did, couldn't reproduce it any more)

*UPD. BSOD still might happen, I don't know why exactly. Will look into it again once rested. And seems like user still might not hit PC even when deleting Quest-related file.

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-17T14:00:23Z

Update v2.2

This is our last update for Ludum Dare 54, but we might update the game one last time in the future to add online highscores.

NEW

+ BIOS. You can now enter hidden settings when OS loads by clicking [B] button. There you can Toggle On/Off Music, SFX (only sounds PC makes) and Fullscreen. + Gamepad Support + Secret File!?? Has a very low one time chance of being downloaded. These cannot get deleted or corrupted. They will give a buff and change what OS writes when you lose. You have to collect 8 of those to "Win" the game, but you can continue playing as long as you like.

FIXES / TWEAKS + Improved support for Touch controls + Script Files now properly spawn + Little tweaks of difficulty scaling + Fixed. User now always properly responds to deleted quest-related files and Random BSOD on deletion of default files doesn't happen anymore.

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-17T18:06:05Z

@tao-yuanyue Thanks for feedback! I don't think it's a bug, you probably kept entering BIOS, because you pressed something. Maybe I should have limited it to a specific button :)

There are instructions you can read in the menu, that should clear out some confusion.

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-17T19:50:36Z

@tetracold Thank you. This makes my day

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-17T21:42:58Z

@patbgames Thank you for feedback! I didn't notice this option before somehow, but fixed it now! Thanks :)

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-18T01:48:31Z

@lincolnsalles Glad you liked it! I seem to have the same problem which is kinda funny, because I'm a full time game designer and supposed to put game-design first  But when I am making my own games I just go with the creative flow and it's actually better this way 'cause otherwise I wouldn't probably even consider making something like this. Actually the whole idea of this game was born out of Glitch FX template I made a few years ago, I just felt the need to use it somehow and making PC game seemed like one of the good ways of going about it.

I may have plans to expand this game for the market in the future. So making some downloaded files functional would be one of the things on to-do list which could include mini-games within the computer as long as it makes some sense with the gameloop. We'll see!

Outta Space by Empyreans 2023-10-18T10:03:53Z

@abcdef65g Thanks for feedback! Actually Sticky Notes tell which files should be kept similar to what you described like - File Type, File Format, First Letter in a Name and Creation Year.

LD55 — Summoning

I am a wizard and my shoulder hurts by monika 2024-05-05T18:43:50Z

Thanks for making this beautiful game with interesting story and multiple endings!

You definitely got my curiosity with Playdate as I've never heard of it before. I'd definitely buy one if those weren't so expensive where I am ($400 so double of original price), but maybe one day. I don't feel like browser emulator does it justice.

Great job! And thank you for bringing this treasure to the stream!

Rex by MateusBoga 2024-04-29T20:52:10Z

I really liked the concept of the game. Stayed on the throne for 3 years) Atmospheric medieval experience, reminded me of one old game I was playing on 3DO though they're nothing alike mechanically.

It does have a certain learning curve which probably could be better explained in the game, but once you get it - it becomes more clear as to what kind of decisions you should be making.

This babe gets a fief...and this babe gets a fief. All babes get a fief!

LD 55 - The Great "Sum"-moner! by Nwoknu 2024-05-02T09:22:06Z

LD 55 - The Great "Sum"-moner! by Nwoknu 2024-05-02T11:31:48Z

@nwoknu Ohhh I apologize, I downloaded too many games xD that one is called the Old Summoner lol.

Making amends, I did play your game and completed it ^_^ though I do suck at quick math xD

Art was nice. I don't think there was a sound? At least in browser version I didn't hear any.

Sometimes numbers that flew into you I could not click on because of the numbers you select, maybe your opponent should have been the one you click on to avoid overlap.

Great job on the game!

UI/UX was confusing at first, but okay after a while.

Well done :)

Zombie Shock by Skvader_418 2024-04-30T14:29:52Z

Very nice game with plenty levels to zombify

It was easy to get the main game mechanics and work on sometimes puzzling human placement with nothing holding you back.

I wish you could drag & drop zombies you've made though, because sometimes it takes them a while to find a human :)

Great work!

Color Jumble by Tommes 2024-04-30T17:08:00Z

Really nice game.

It's fine if you didn't make everything you wanted in time, but you should definitely continue developing if you want to!

Great Job!

Totem Breakout by denilseven 2024-05-02T17:51:20Z

I really liked the art and animations. Throwing big moai around was cool :sunglasses:

Melee combat is tough so I mostly relied on the rock fall)

Also there was a moment when two archers spawned, but didn't cross the barricade. So nothing changed in the game for some reason until you kill them. Not sure if that's the intended behavior

Great job!

Nice concept, really fun especially because it runs without background lmao. The most hilarious game I played :)

In the end it was a bit of a mess as the difficulty spikes too fast, but kinda adds to the Virus-vibe this game seems to be going for.

Nice little game with two endings. I liked different abilities, it was fun get stuck sometimes in the objects with the teleport

Music was fine from what I could hear, but there was some issue on my device as it made unpleasant cracking noise all the time. Honestly don't know what could have caused it.

Guess we need a sequel now to see mentor's comeback )

Death Beckons by Empyreans 2024-04-18T09:23:32Z

@monika That's some good feedback, thank you!

You're right about the climbing window. As I seriously rework the game right now, I have improvement in mind which will make it easier.

Platforming feels indeed off at some places as I assembled most level design in the last hours having working for 2 days in a row without sleep. That's actually one of the main focuses of the current update including adding some SFX & VO.

Inability to get out of the King's Room is intentional though and will not be fixed. By reaching the King's Room you pretty much complete the game, just with the default boring ending :) I'll make it a more clear point of no return though, because right now without having completed the game once you'd have no idea what you're getting into.

Door in the battlefield does open, but I will not tell more as that could be spoilers for other players. It is however very unclear in the current version and looks out of place too.

This game is all about exploring and finding those new decisions that you can make, I will alter a few lines in dialogue to make it a tad bit more clear, but not much as there still has to be an element of mystery.

Thank you very much for playing! I hope that you'll give the game another go when I update it, because this basic version is not at all what I intended. I'll be sure to tag you when it's out, I would really like to know what you think about it.

Death Beckons by Empyreans 2024-04-28T20:17:24Z

Apologies to everyone! I will start playing your games now, before I wouldn't be able to give it the required time and attention.

@just-a-cat It might not. I have no way of testing mac builds unfortunately. I only know that you must 100% unzip it first. Could be also that you need Intel version? I just assumed ARM would do for everyone, but maybe not.

Death Beckons by Empyreans 2024-04-30T09:17:37Z

@just-a-cat I've uploaded Mac Webview version instead. Let me know if it works! Otherwise I might have to do a Browser version.

Death Beckons by Empyreans 2024-04-30T11:44:52Z

@just-a-cat Thanks a lot for playing! I'm very happy it worked :)

You found them all :) Though there's sort of a rare 5th ending that requires you to Die along with the Boss. It has the same funeral picture, but you restore honor and avenge your father. It was added just in case that ever happens, chances are extremely small, but nevertheless it's there :)

Death Beckons by Empyreans 2024-05-02T09:05:15Z

@arman If you mean "Death Beckons" screen, game is kinda built in an endless loop of reliving the past. You still see the ending picture, right? Otherwise it could be a bug.

Death Beckons by Empyreans 2024-05-02T18:02:23Z

@dekisenpaitm Thank you!

I agree that visuals could be improved, updated version was mostly Level Design / Polish focused, then I did all VO & SFX in the last 2 days. I probably won't go much further with the improvements here, can only think of a few things that I want to do.

But I'm working on a commercial TBA game with similar vibes, focus on non-linear choices and pretty cool combat system. Art will be much better there as I'm hiring artists for this one :)

Death Beckons by Empyreans 2024-05-02T21:40:33Z

@denilseven Thank you so much for your kind words :)

Movement and combat have indeed fell out of focus. I have an urge to do something about it, but we'll see. Some improvements for definitive v1.1 release. Also to feature a brand new "grey" ending there and who knows what else xD

I kinda feel like post-updating this forever though hahah

After the jam I was a total cabbage, but all good now

Thanks for playing! It makes my day to know that you enjoyed it so much!

Death Beckons by Empyreans 2024-05-03T21:49:52Z

@denilseven Inventory is a very good suggestion. There is a problem with the code though.

Because I was on a time rush the code naturally turned into a mess, I didn't even bothered to reuse anything from my previous projects which would probably not only boost speed of development, but significantly improve quality and make it friendly for post-launch updates. I was kinda surprised I managed to pull it off in 2 days tbh.

As a result every new feature now comes at a price of making this mess even bigger. I will try to do inventory, but will probably keep it very simple, not even a grid, but more like similar pop-up as to when you get the item. It will show how many items you have and allow you to switch between them. Not perfect, but will have to do for such a short game.

Thank you as always

Hope you're doing great!

Great short horror game with great atmosphere in a liminal setting.

I quickly caught up on the monster being just a shy little guy so by the second level I was trying to get as close as I could to the poor fella

Wish there was a third level with a more direct confrontation as the game did end rather abruptly. I'm going to assume we finally met the guy and became pals :sunglasses:

Loved the realistic garbage texture you used. I don't why it grabbed my attention as much as it did

The walkthrough as I promised :smile_cat:

Apologies for not noticing the freeze on stream, it seems the game can only be recorded with Display capture as it loses focus in the Fullscreen.

Tried to get a No Hint, but the hook mechanic is a bit inconsistent as Matteo doesn't always pulls the anchor back unfortunately and it seems to be tied to either movement or animation or both so eventually I had to give up on the idea, but why I even decided to do it in the first place is because Boss Fights are extremely well done and the game is well balanced.

Beautiful & cute pixel art, great voice over and music! Game also has easily the most sweet, memorable and overall enjoyable story.

Excellent work!

P.S. If you find the time, I'd like you to pop in for "The Best of Ludum Dare" stream I'll be doing about the time when official ranking will be announced :)

Nice mining game with an intriguing story and somewhat creepy atmosphere.

It's not clear where to dig though and I couldn't differentiate when I was doing something right or wrong. I tried multiple times, but each time I died at level 3, because Areem apparently destined to die at this point so I bought another miner at level 2 and then another later and we made it to level 5, but as I finished the level something went wrong, maybe because of the upgrades and as I smashed "continue" button game simply resumed the same level with refilled characters, but I tried clicking and they were moving but nothing happened so effectively I got stuck.

Beautiful graphics, nice music and some fine story.

I do hope the girl leaves the guy though, because he's a douche. I feel like the game was originally about her realizing his nature and that he was using her, but in the end it suddenly shifted towards "oh he understands me so we're cool" and I think while it's good to end the game on the good note the ending didn't really sell itself to me.

Turtles All The Way Down by VerttiXPertti 2025-04-16T22:38:18Z

Pretty fun little game. However I found the controls (clicking behind the character) counter-intuitive and couldn't bring myself to enjoy the gameplay as much I wanted to. I feel like jump recharge should happen on collision with objects and not by standing on them as that would make this challenging game more fair on the player. But as the goal clearly was to induce rage you definitely did a fine job there

Had fun chill time drilling around! I like that it wasn't overly punishing and is well balanced. Though at one point high pressure almost got me

I found the graphics nice especially the fact that they reflected upgrades.

There was a minor bug where tile showed animation as if it was still being drilled and flashlight cone could look smoother as it's very distracting so I generally avoided using it unless I really had hard time seeing anything (so basically at the lowest depth)

Scares on Schedule by python-b5 2025-04-16T14:58:49Z

That's a really well done game and I love the aesthetics!

I do think the difficulty should have been raised more carefully as having 3 puzzle per villager from the start is a bit too much, you want player to get into the rhythm first without putting too much pressure on them, and I think it would also make sense story wise as villagers that pass through first don't expect much to happen while those that come in later are challenging their nerves as to see how far they can make it.

Some puzzles could use some work as they are way too unforgiving. I also never figured out how to do the "Boo" thing right which didn't allow me to progress anywhere on the score. I tried timing it multiple times and it just didn't work out. I think maybe adding some sort of hint the first time player tries to do that would be a nice thing.

I'm glad that you're going to update the game and not just move on which is a sign that you're a good developer. This is how you get better and jams are all about that.

This is the scariest jam game I've seen ever, not kidding.

Horrors rarely get me, but you totally did everything right here.

I wonder why generators are even there in the first place? But then does it even matter? Fear is in the unknown.

Voice Over was extremely pleasant, soothing and for a game like this it's a reward for bringing generators back online!

Sometimes monster camped the same spot. I realized he wouldn't move and started flashing light in his face & butt and then hiding in the narrow space, but well apparently the bastard had enough and somehow got me through textures (?). Whether it was intentional or not, I don't know, but what I do know is that it was scary AF and gave me Alien: Isolation vibe as if the monster is actually smarter than I give it credit for.

In the first level there was also a moment where he sat on the generator. I managed to start it behind his back and leave though. Maybe it just likes to play with it's food :skull:

Flatline v1.1 is out!

Flatline1_1.png

**Changes**

+ Updated Level 9

+ Reworked Level 10

+ Added smooth background color change between levels

+ Fix: Ricochets are now more reliable with updated collision mask

+ Fix: Voice lines at the start of the level repeat only after a couple retries

Also featuring Windows & Mac v1.1 version. Mac version hasn't been tested so any feedback is welcome.

Current browser version includes all changes.

Jam version with ricochet / voice over fix is available separately as a Windows executable, but doesn't features anything new as that would be cheating.

**Changes**

+ Features "Last Run Score" and it will save in cache. However you must beat the game once for it to be saved.

+ Fix: No more clipping through blocks

+ Fix: Final update to collision mask to make ricochets more reliable

Original jam version itself receives none of these updates.

**Changes**

+ Added Autocomplete. Use this if you just cannot complete the game yourself. Click on Rhombus in the top-right corner of the menu to enable it. It supports override as well! Note, your run score would mention you used it so you cannot cheat your way into top score. Fellow Ludum Dare people who just want to see the game can either use this or see Youtube video.

+ Made uncharged ~~protagonist~~ ~~ball~~ balltagonist more easily distinguishable from the charged version

Also now featuring Linux version of the game 🐧

Enjoy!

@kartoffel-licht I really appreciate this feedback!

Difficulty is like that on purpose. I wasn't planning to make too many levels with this specific project and I didn't wanted it to be a simple game. While you're correct that level design could be more polished, it is partially chaotic on purpose (as protagonist is dying and gets worse) and then it makes sense that the only really cleanly built levels are first and the last one (in non-jam version). Though again if I really wanted I would probably have rebuilt most of them.

Each level did had specific goal in mind. This is straight from the notepad where I planned it out: + Level 1 (Tutorial) + Level 2 (Tutorial Exam) + Level 3 (Introduces Breakables) + Level 4 (Breakable Exam) + Level 5 (Introduces Warp) + Level 6 (Warp Exam) + Level 7 (Introduces Moving Reds) + Level 8 (Introduces Rotating Reds) + Level 9 (Core Exam) + Level 10 (All Mechanics Exam)

Moving elements while may seem like luck. They do reset each level and if you know the timing you can complete each level consistently. This can be proven by "Autocomplete" feature in the game (rhombus you can click in the top-right corner of the menu) that uses a movement state of those objects to make ball move at the right time.

I definitely agree with everything you've wrote and I am very glad that you see here some potential, because so do I! I'm planning to make a successor as a Mobile & Browser game and it would feature much much softer learning curve and some endless fun!

I never heard of "Just shapes and beats", but this would be a nice first reference for a commercial product.

Thank you!

brave_iI5ATtndBh.png

This is the final update now. For real!

Changes

+ Live Highscore Table! Time to begin the score chase! Don't try to cheat with autocomplete feature as it would not be registered as a highscore.

+ Change your name in the game. Note, if you want your highscore to use your current name you must change it before starting the run. Changing the name later would only change it locally for you. + Few minor fixes here and there

Now we're going to move on to the successor project! Have fun everyone ;)

One can't get better at anything if they only look for confirmation bias and I will apply this knowledge to the successor project. Criticism doesn't take away, it gives me fuel to evolve.

You're right that action and puzzle don't mix too well together. Recalling it now, I was going towards action game originally and switched towards puzzle half way through and this inconsistency naturally reflected itself in the level design.

In the future project, I'm thinking there could be normal levels that are more puzzle-driven and then perhaps alternative version of the same levels (like Hell in Super Meat Boy) that are action-driven or perhaps a different mode entirely for that. This is something that I'm going to consider very carefully! The jam served it's purpose perfectly as I dug up my unfinished 2013 project, redesigned it and now in the process of harvesting knowledge to apply this in the future work. This in my belief is exactly what jams are all about!

And I am glad that more and more people see potential in this! Thank you

@ditam Thank you for the feedback!

Web build should perform nearly same as the Desktop ones, but I assume you played on Mobile and then the performance definitely demands a high-end device as the game wasn't specifically optimized for the platform. I found it to be way more challenging there as well, both due to performance issues and because finger was getting in the way sometimes.

Flatline by Empyreans 2025-04-17T17:02:47Z

@ditam I'll look into that. Thanks!

@yanato Wow congrats! You are a person of focus, commitment and sheer will :sunglasses:

Flatline by Empyreans 2025-04-17T23:01:17Z

@hexstart In level 5 I suppose you went down instead of going up to use Warp, there corner bounce is actually speedrunning strat for the level and not the normal way. Generally the corner bounce doesn't require that much accuracy once you get the hang of it. However I agree that those can be tricky, the biggest problem comes with using built-in behavior for the bounce which would work just fine otherwise, but in the game where direction of your movement matters so much it doesn't help at all.

Flatline by Empyreans 2025-04-18T11:59:47Z

@vary @alphish Thank you for the quality feedback and congrats on beating the game :sunglasses:

@vary Background is something I've been working on before the jam for the other project, I worked quite a bit on that to get the feeling just right thought had to nerf a notch for this project. It's mostly just moving / rotating tiled backgrounds with a few blending effects and spawning particles. I'm glad you liked it! :relieved:

@alphish Initially the game wasn't supposed to have a story and when I had an idea for VO I couldn't spend too much time on the structure as the project itself was barebones. Doing a more nuanced monologues / soundtrack would also require more directing on my part and there wasn't enough time for all that. The project largely suffered because I did work less than 48 hours on it as I only began on the second day of the jam after dropping the previous idea, but time constraints aside we definitely could give it a better swirl so I concur.

Flatline v1.4 - Adrenaline & Green Blocks

New Features

+ **Green Blocks** - turn into Blue Blocks on hit recharging Movement Shift & Adrenaline + **Adrenaline Ability** - temporarily slows down time to make precise movement shifts. This will help many people who are struggling with the game's high difficulty. Adrenaline is spent on use so you have to think ahead. On Mobile devices Adrenaline is activated automatically on Touch, but placement of Green Blocks generally will help. Each use of Adrenaline is going to take a good chunk of your run's score so it's a huge NO if you want to climb to the top score (so Mobile is at disadvantage by default)

Minor changes

+ Start-up timer is twice as fast now due to popular demand + Tutorial now at the first level includes controls for Adrenaline ability + Green blocks now replacing some Blue blocks + Movable objects are now moving identically on each retry. Previously your first attempt would have a different timing to the consecutive ones.

@oadt Thanks for the quality feedback and kind words!

This helps me with the next project currently dubbed "Flatline 2" (though it's not a sequel). There I am going to put a lot of focus on visual clarity and better control over character as timing sections in original just don't work well without any additional movement abilities.

I did originally went on to make Adrenaline here slowing down character only which would give some wiggle room in tough spots, but that would move the game away from the original design too much so I made a different call.

@deadroach Thank you so much for playing :) I'm very glad you liked it!

Flatline by Empyreans 2025-04-23T11:03:06Z

Thank you for feedback! I'll take that into consideration.

One thing I however can't agree with is disconnect with visuals and difficulty. The hardest games out there look casual at a first glance: "Geometry Dash", "The World's Hardest Game", "Super Meat Boy: Forever", "Super Meat Boy", "Cuphead" to mention a few.

Flatline by Empyreans 2025-04-24T11:21:31Z

@nbumgardner Thanks for playing the game on the stream! You're 1 of 2 people who I saw complete it live and your approach was very methodical which was entertaining to spectate.

Trail is an interesting suggestion. I will definitely try to work something out in the successor project. It will be quite different to this game and far less depressive in mood, but you would recognize the original mechanics.

With levels I was outlining the things I wanted each level to have. It was short as "Introducing Yellow Blocks" / "Yellow Blocks Exam" etc. there's an exact plan I used just in one of my comments above.

The rest was done in the engine without any sketches or concepts, I would surely do those in normal circumstances if I had time, but I had to rush thing as only 7 hours were left on the clock. So I have built as I went, but the first questions that popped up on each were "Where do I want it to start?" and "Where do I want it to end?" and knowing the level's design objective all other things pieced themselves together naturally. Though the learning curve could definitely be smoother and block out cleaner, but the rushing of things played it's role.

A Few Easy Questions by Jonathan Vogt 2025-04-16T23:19:14Z

Went on irritating the guy and he didn't turn out to be such a nice dude after all so I think I probably did the right thing. He seemed to be looking for some PR cheerleading to further boost his ego and the world could do less with such people.

I couldn't restart the game from the beginning as it saves progress in the browser and I didn't want to clear site data on the entire site for this. There should've been a retry button.

Interactive fiction is always great and I wish I could do a few more tries to dig up more information.

Great job!

I liked the creepiness of the atmosphere. Reminded me of some 3DO / PS1 era games. It evoke nostalgia as if about something I never actually played before which doesn't happen all that often to me.

One thing I'd note is that UI is pretty confusing, but that's totally alright.

Wish I had someone on the stream to play it with me. That'd be fun!

Waiting on LD58 for Spicy Hot Chocolate 4.

Hello Darkness by Emsea 2025-04-22T13:10:31Z

I played on Windows build, because browser one just kept on freezing (Brave browser)

Entertaining one-man crew game with easy to understand mechanics, pleasant & unique visuals and great atmosphere. It's fairly polished. I did found balance to be a bit rough though. Sometimes the same thing breaks twice in a row as you try to repair it, I think there should've been a cooldown timer.

How you made cruising feel so naturally took my breath away(figuratively, at first). It feels great despite being minimalistic. And the low-pitched sound of the horn - perfect!

The furthest I was able to get is 990m / Trench and died due to suffocation. Don't know how to go around that too as I don't think you can replenish oxygen and it breaks without any distinct sound (at least I didn't notice).

Funny thing, painful suffocating SFX plays endlessly after you die and still tortures me as I write this comment

Great work guys!

If I'd have to describe core concept that would be "Leap of Faith" and while it's generally not a good thing, I does somewhat extends this short game forcing you to explore. At one point I was actually giving up, but took the plunge and managed to find all totems. Did want to make screenshot, but couldn't make it in time as it went dark, the last thing read "Get out of here".

Fishing Therapy by Dadidou 2025-04-17T00:15:46Z

That's how I understood it:

First Patient (Woman): Was a cool partying girl doing all sort of crazy stuff (were those pink things at the start b-plugs? lol or just earrings?). Then she married (dress / rings), had a few miscarriages (babies), has debt issues (bank buildings throwing stuff right?) and then finally gave birth to a baby, but the baby was taking up too much energy from her and she was missing all the pleasure that she had in youth which led to her current state of mind.

Second Patient (Man): Works as a cashier in a big supermarket, leading a life that feels redundant. He probably got hit one time by a horse in his youth or saw someone being kicked and since then has a phobia. Game doesn't give much more to go on here. I'm going to assume the woman he's into is someone on the side and he wants to be with her to spice up his life.

Third Patient (Boy): Something is imperfect in the Fischer family, there could be a divorce happening and with each parent dealing with their troubles the boy feels alienated and abandoned.

So if Doctor did anything right here: Woman & Man are going to realize that they have to make changes in their life and go out somewhere together as a family, work something out to reignite their marriage and give more attention to their little boy.

Well done! Only wish it had some music in there!

Are you smarter than a fisherman? by Gerswick 2025-04-19T17:45:32Z

Are_you_smarter_than_a_fisherman_WUmTMr2mLw.png

Entertaining game with enjoyable graphics and sound design.

Even though I read the instructions carefully it was still hard to differentiate between Real & Fake fish. I think Fake ones should have stood out more, maybe move in a unnatural sorta phasing patters, like it moves, then it suddenly stops completely and then moves again unlike real fish that moves and stops smoothly like you'd expect.

The bait sometimes spawned without a wire (maybe that's a bug idk), I felt it was actually better, because in real life it's usually so thin and almost transparent-like that fish wouldn't be able to tell.

Great job! :fish:

MESSIER 104 CBH by kuboi 2025-04-22T16:39:35Z

Very fun game with sweet graphics and sound design (the "bonk" when you hit asteroids  )

also us being an astrofrogonaut :frog: is an instant win

I found mechanics easy to understand and difficulty is fair. Game does depends mostly on random and as gravitational pull got stronger I was sticking to the right half of the screen to avoid getting hit by asteroids if I try to cross to the other side, but eventually I ran out of luck on fuel.

I wish it gave a bit more info to see what's coming, I think the best solution would be to add a small UI hint on the edge of the screen for when something is approaching as that would help massively to calculate your next decision and gave it a nice touch with strategic thinking as just waiting around for something useful to spawn does sometimes feel hopeless and takes the skill factor out of it as even if you saw something appear now on the other side you simply wouldn't have time to reach it and by the time you do - something useful could spawn on the side you just left.

Great game!

Nice game with interesting stylization and fine sound effects. I did found the combat system to be somewhat confusing and the AI's weren't doing much of anything so I mostly got use from them when my current character died. I made it to Wave 3, it got better once I started using shield a bit more.

Very satisfying tilemap, game and sound design. One thing I didn't appreciate is the difficulty curve as I'd find myself too often fighting with the character's movement and that got in a way of climbing out. And damn even in this game one can't escape taxes
