It was really cool to see a game with voiceover — even though it got a bit out of sync with the subtitles at the beginning, it was a nice surprise to find a narrated game in LD. I liked that there’s a walking animation, but it threw me off a bit that there’s no jump animation.

The Metroidvania-style setup, where you find new body parts that give you new abilities and animations, was a great idea. Though when I grabbed onto a vine, my legs disappeared — maybe there’s a reason for that, since both the vines and the legs are green?

I found a strawberry at the end and it made me happy.

After this short but atmospheric adventure, I think the main thing I’d mention is that using space both to skip narration and to jump felt a bit awkward. Other than that, I really enjoyed the game — the upgrades kept me curious and exploring, and the narrator helped maintain the atmosphere.

If this ever becomes a full game, I’d be happy to see slightly less floaty controls, but even in this short intro, I had a genuinely good time.

if you develop further, skip button for startup camera fly : )

Nice work on the voice acting through the game. I liked that there were little snippets throughout that narrated more of your journey as you made progress back up.

I would've liked to see a few more mechanics or upgrades, but given the short context of the jam, and the huge amount of narrative work done, I enjoyed the concept and exploring all the way to the end. One small feedback when you beat the game and it fades to black, it would've been nice to flash some end credits/game ended type text as I was waiting to see if it was going to fade back and another segment was going to start.

Great level design and big points for voice over and mood! The animation go a bit crazy but not really a problem press up and space for speed climbing :D

keith-wang 2025-04-08 17:01

I like the concept and the art sprites. Voice over is cool as well. The controlling part is a bit buggy, though.

frywarrior 2025-04-08 17:02

Overall pretty good, movement is a bit buggy tho, like you can climb the vines extra quickly by holding space at the same time or when you exit the vine by moving to the side while climbing, it doesn't change back to the right sprite.

melonboy 2025-04-08 17:03

the environmental art and atmosphere was great. the mechanics were very simple and it didn't feel like there was ever much of a challenge except for some tedium trying to clear a jump. the reward of voice acted dialogue was cool tho. i also enjoyed holding up and space when climbing.

I did not expect to see a cool atmospheric Metroidvania game in a gamejam.. Well done. I really enjoyed it.. (Until i fell through the floor)

I got stuck! I had legs, a brain, eyes. It looked like there wwas a lever to flip, I was trying to find an arm or something. Screenshot 2025-04-08 120528.png

At this part, I couldn't get anywhere from the vines, I couldn't jump up, and I couldn't crawl anymore to make it under the rock. I wasn't sure how to progress. Screenshot 2025-04-08 120714.png

I really want to finish the story! I love when games have recorded voices in them, it adds so much!

Let me know if I did something wrong :) I would love to finish the game yet!

It's a cool game, I feel bad for Adam hehe.

The whole premise of delving the depts to look for upgrades to be able to make it further was a cool idea.

The dialogues did not proceed to the next transcript so it felt a bit awkwards at first. I thought my game froze to be honest. Maybe a blinking "next" would maybe eleviate the feeling the game froze.

The vines to climb were cool, But at the top of them i kept falling down so I had to make a some quirky jump manuever to escape the grasp of the vines. Maybe a one way colision box could work?

Also noted that some for the textures had som seam, What I usually do to resolve that i tranpose the pixels halfway so that the seams are in the center of the image and then clone stamp them. Also krita has a wrap around mode which can help with working with that :D

But all in all a really cool game, Good job!

smalltalkinc 2025-04-08 17:26

@cameronpenner I love that you noticed that AND somehow knew we were planning to put an arm there XP We were very pressed for time, so indeed there may be some unfortunate glitches like this :( We'll keep working on it though, also beyond Ludum Dare!

Only thing I can think of is refresh the page, and sit through the first monologue again, so you can try again :P

fullbuff 2025-04-08 18:07

Why is that lady roasting me 🥲 Nice job on the overall mood, would make for a great start in a story driven game.

lisaquill 2025-04-08 19:43

@fullbuff The writing made me do it, I swear! :p

Thank you all so much for playing and leaving comments! This was a super fun experience (I have never worked on a game before, and it has been a good 15 years since I last sprited anything) and we're definitely taking your feedback into account!

As @smalltalkinc already mentioned, the arms were an item we didn't have the time to implement, and I unfortunately also wasn't able to finish sprites for Adam climbing with legs. I am very happy you guys seem to enjoy my little boy, though!

Cool unique platformer with some voiced narration. Really liked the idea of building your character with collectable body parts to get past obstacles, good stuff!

magnesiumninja 2025-04-10 21:20

Really enjoyed the premise and the narrative accompaniment! I also struggled at first with not realizing I had to manually progress the dialogue, but once I got past that I was able to complete the game in full :)

Nice work!

nick-halstead 2025-04-11 00:56

I loved these graphic and the whole vibe, but we all know here that the voice acting was killer! Not what I was expecting for a game jam, blown away :0

broco 2025-04-11 04:28

Nice voice acting! I really liked the presentation on this one! The music sets up the mood really nicely!

Although there's some things here and there I didn't like. Having the voice over stop me every minute was quite annoying. It would have been much better if I could keep playing while the voice was playing.

Also there's room for improvement on the character's movement. It's pretty frustrating suddenly falling down and having to get back up, specially for a "story-driven" game like this!

Anyways, nice entry! I really enjoyed it! Forgot to take a screenshot, but I reached the ending! 😉

I really appreciated the voice acting in this game, and the way that every element (sprites, audio, darkness) that tied together made it feel like you were really in the depths. I'm feeling a bit more down after that. I hope that Adam got some sort of happiness after leaving that cave. Overall though, that was a powerful story that I could see being continued much, much longer! And there's some elements that remind me of older PC games as well that could work out really well with this.

One comment I have is that: I think the audio elements could've continued without being tied to the text boxes or perhaps the text boxes could be the things that trigger the audio. With the current difference, I didn't realize I had to click on something to continue the dialogue, so I was sitting there in the first dialogue for a little bit and then after I realized, I had to go through a bunch of text when the audio narration was over.

Love the voice over! It would be nice if you could continue moving whilst listening to it, but it creates a fantastic mood for the game. I also like the idea of collecting body parts that give you abilities and help you get further. As other people have said the animations can be a little jarring, but overall an awesome jam game

bacontree 2025-04-13 10:57

Abolutely loved the narrative and voice acting. The mood is fantastic!

moonlightbomber 2025-04-16 07:48

I admit, this was kinda creepy, but at least the narration is nice.

empyreans 2025-04-16 14:10

The doctor is sure all about giving Adam a severe depression and that's after dismembering the poor guy!

I found the heart and left. I do hope Adam found some peace

Nice atmospheric experience!
