LD26 — Minimalism

Flight Panic: Minimum by NeiloGD 2013-04-29T17:31:00

Making a video game in 48 hours, in 10 different time zones would have been such an incredible achievement. Still, commendation for not missing this Ludum Dare despite the inconvenience. :)

The game sounds fun: Short and simple. Sounds like a game parents could play with their kids. It ends fast enough so parents don't have to dedicate hours of their time to playing.

Going with the kids theme, tho, it might be a good idea to replace the skull and crossbones on the 'delay' card with a stopwatch :)

Abstract by PTSnoop 2013-04-29T20:15:00

Yup! Definitely one of the more creative ones!

Random Objects Smash by Moist 2013-04-29T23:28:00

Ha! I had FOURTEEN seconds of fun! I sure showed you! I really love the art style, the single tone with black border really makes things pretty. I also love the exe's icon :)

Lights by corrigan_sam 2013-04-30T06:27:00

I kept missing the buttons, clicking outside the window. You might want to extend the edges of the program, so if a player overshoots the button while moving the mouse, they still click inside the program. I played up until I had 100 pointsusing a tablet, worked a lot better than with a mouse.

Multiplied Screens by glbs 2013-04-29T23:32:00

Schizophrenic Astral Return by saggiosoft 2013-04-29T13:43:00

Level 1: Oh, I just hold up until they eventually get to the target
Level 2: Oh, I just arrange them into a neat row by smashin them into a screen border and then send them up all at once
Level 6: How do I do this?!?!

A really cool game!

CompositionTD by Wilson 2013-04-29T17:11:00

This game sure does have a steep learning curve. I'd recommend you add a symbol to the colored areas, which represents what they do. For example a fist for strength (red), a bull's eye for range (blue), a stopwatch for recharge time (yellow) and a thermometer for cooldown (green), and possibly the stat the color decreases in red or with a minus symbol next to it. It's rather hard to remember each effect, at least at first.

The other thing I'd recommend is that you remap the controls. The location of z and y is different in parts of the world (qwertz vs qwerty keyboard), and it's a bit difficult to play with z where y is on your keyboard.

Now don't get me wrong. The game is actually good and enjoyable, It's however difficult to get into at first, and first impressions count. If you improve the way you deliver the instructions, it'll make it accessible to a much wider audience. (I actually didn't know it was a tower defense game when I started the first wave, 'TD' is not as obvious as you'd expect)

Back to basics TD by techmonkey 2013-04-28T16:37:00

This is a simple and fun game. I lost to wave 21.

circlesLT by evelyn-jolli 2013-04-30T06:38:00

I do have an xbox controller and dug up the thing that connects it to the pc. I like ~that~ you used the controller. However, playing prototype 2 is extremely difficult, and it is the most game-y of the lot. I think prototype 2 with auto aiming at the nearest target would work best.

Darkness by LrdKzrth 2013-04-29T19:59:00

Worked fine after I ran it in XP compatibility mode on win8 64b. The game made me turn down my speakers, because I was afraid it will try to scare me... I think that's a good enough indicator that it's immersive.

SquareRoot by Masadow 2013-04-29T13:13:00

Quite a nice game, however this may work better with an analog input tho. I found myself in the situation a few times where I couldn't quite fit in a narrow gap, but knew that if I tapped the arrow key in the direction I had to move in, it'd overshoot and hit the wall. An analog input device could make it possible to increase movement precision (IE Move in the direction of the mouse, how far away the mouse is determines the speed) - Just a thought.

I Want To See Space by PizzaPranks 2013-04-29T17:50:00

Ah the beauty of Game Maker and its default sprites :)

Pixel Dominoes by Pinkerator 2013-04-29T18:05:00

I had to play two games to understand how the domino you have to match is determined. At first I thought it was random. I'd suggest you add a label somewhere explaining how that works, otherwise a perfectly good and playable game.

PUZZLE CUBE by petrocket 2013-04-29T19:00:00

MSVCP100D.dll is not found on this computer. According to a post on msdn, the dll is a part of visual studio but is not in the redistributable package. In the toolbars at the top of the screen in visual studio, you need to change "Debug" to "Release", which will create a releas-ready version to petrocketld26/bin/release

PS: I love it! :)

1951 by Andrei Barsan 2013-04-29T19:33:00

I enjoyed this. I finished it without knowing you could double-click tho. I feel the game difficulty increases at a good rate, but I felt it ended before it actually became 'challenging'. So yeah, a few (dozen) extra levels which increased difficulty would be nice.

I actually spent an hour browsing wikipedia to try to understand why you named it 1951 so I could go "HOHO! THIS is why you called it 1951", but... I couldn't find any event in 1951 that is related.

The One Road by Dietrich Epp 2013-04-29T13:26:00

That was fun! :)

The Road by GeorgeBroussard 2013-05-01T18:27:00

I like it! A creative concept. I like games which are not 'winnable', where you can't undo mistakes. And this is definitely one of them.

I really like the setting, atmosphere, music and graphics.

The Seed by recursor 2013-12-17T00:52:00

Interesting idea. Fits the topic really well, as well as being entertaining.

Doubloon Dash by George 2013-12-16T17:09:00

Pretty good. I mean sure, ship movement inertia, being able to aim your cannon up or down, a message when you hit the shore, etc, etc. - would all make the game better, but for 48 hours, that's pretty good.

The last Stand by grifdail 2013-12-20T20:52:00

13885 points

Some really interesting moments while playing, there's one bug I found tho. If you are moving in a cardinal direction, and want to move in the exact opposite direction, the ball won't change direction.

Perfect Christmas by agmcleod 2013-12-16T23:55:00

I kinda sorta drove in the exact middle of the road, and never had to move. Might want to make the cars on the left potentially spawn a bit more to the right.

Still, happy holidays. :)

You Set Us Up The Bomb by scriptorum 2013-12-16T17:41:00

I like the game, especially the early levels. The later levels are sort of too easy tho. No matter where you throw the bomb, it'll always cause a big enough chain reaction to satisfy the score requirement.

Bomb has been defused by SkyWolf 2013-12-16T23:07:00

Cool game. Whether you have enough time or not depends a bit on luck, but ah well, after a few rounds, I managed to consistently win. would probably be good as a hacking minigame within a larger game, like the hacking minigames in Alpha Protocol.

Backwater Rider by Dyn 2013-12-17T02:48:00

You click on starts to move

Speedy Tiny Golf! by Xgor 2013-12-16T17:14:00

Well done from a technical standpoint. I don't think the input method works well tho. The spinning arrow sort of makes interaction somewhat unintuitive, or at least that's what I thought.

Prototype by Cheshyr 2013-12-16T04:40:00

That's alright. It's a prototype, the vast majority of games are, especially 3D games. And the games that do get polished tend to be very simple games in their mechanics. I'm not saying that as going against those games, but the difference has to be acknowledged.

Space Escape Catastrophe by Liam :D 2013-12-16T16:35:00

The relevance to the topic was you having one chance at freedom, and had to keep the ship running for that chance to remain.

Currently you just have a score ticking up, but there was another thing I wanted to implement, but ran out of time. A second fail condition. You were supposed to be chased by the space police, so you had to maintain a certain speed. That'd probably translate to the topic a lot better, but ah well, ran out of time.

Space Escape Catastrophe by Liam :D 2014-12-03T21:53:00

Thank you everyone for your reviews :D

0RBITALIS by AlanZucconi 2013-12-20T22:22:00

Wow, this is definitely one of the best games I've seen so far.

STAR BATTER by CTATZ 2013-12-16T04:53:00

Gonna have to agree with the 'difficult to control' comments. It would probably work great on a touch sensitive screen tho. It would probably also work a lot better with a mouse if you weren't required to click on the planet to start dragging (so you could pick an arbitrary position and just move the mouse in whichever location you wanted your planet to move, relative to the mouse's initial position)

You Only Get 1UP by Thein 2013-12-17T01:07:00

Sooooo cooounter intuitiiiveee :) Having to avoid coins just feels wrong deep down inside :) Next up they'll be saying we have to avoid jewels! :)

One at a Time by Elforama 2013-12-20T22:31:00

This game would have scored really high two ludum dares ago, when the theme was "minimalism", I'm sort of missing its explicit connection to the theme this time tho. That small opinion aside, the game is very well made, and probably one of the better games I've played this ludum dare.

OfficeRage by Seigeengine 2013-12-19T14:35:00

Hah, everyone went to the top! I went underground! :)

Candy Runner by AtomicVikings 2013-12-17T02:54:00

I like it, the visuals are cool, and the "single action, changing keys" mechanic is pretty cool. Definitely an idea you could use to make a great game.

One upgrade in heart by Tonasz 2013-12-16T16:39:00

Quite an interesting fighting game.

Alien Plant by internetpaulicy 2013-12-20T23:29:00

Interesting game. I managed to get underground by reaching the edge of the map, which made me happy :)

You Only Get Hitbox One by eskivor 2013-12-17T00:31:00

Speaking as someone who stays weeeeellll away from the topic you're spoofing, it's hilarious :) I love some of the small touches in this game too, like how security changes towards the end :)

One Chance v1.5 by JellyMan64 2013-12-17T03:01:00

Not sure if I simply didn't play for long enough, but I didn't really run into anything that had any chance of hurting me. The enemies that I saw were all extremely slow, and only damaged when they were right inside me, and that only really happened when I let them kill me.

You Only Get One Bullet by Beardo Games 2013-12-20T21:39:00

I think the idea is solid, but the fact the bullet clears the path and stops at where it ends means you can just go to some location shoot, don't move and shoot immediately after recovering the bullet, since it will continuously clear a path for you. Perhaps a better option would be to make it only kill one enemy, and continue until it reaches the end of the screen.

Medieval Fantasy Island by aayars 2013-12-17T01:00:00

Okay, okay, I didn't want to say it but.... "holy crap, you made that in 72 hours?" Well done, buuuuuuut... you gotta show the graphics :) The camera's default position and angle stares directly at the floor, you'd probably want it a bit farther back and looking a bit up.

The One Fork Restaurant by drludos 2013-12-23T12:36:00

Definitely one of the better games I've seen. At first you get the idea that you just have them eat in the order they come in, but soon realize this is not the optimal strategy, in fact it doesn't work well at all. Very clever, and kinda addictive.

Jump If You Can by PolishedPixels 2013-12-20T21:30:00

This is pretty freaking impressive for lwjgl. Good job.

Stranded by Jeasonfire 2013-12-20T22:15:00

Interesting game, pretty good, especially considering you made it in java, which doesn't have high level support for games, only low level stuff like lwjgl and such.

One Minute Man by bspa 2013-12-17T00:03:00

Interesting. The game is simple in concept, but I think the level is designed rather well.

Mama is Sick by JaymeeMak 2013-12-17T03:06:00

This game deserves a lot more attention than I managed to give it now: "Oh, I'll just play one more game before I leave." I'm giving it a high 'first impression' rating, so it appears in my list of rated games. I'll give it a full playthrough later.

Oscar's World [You Only Get One Childhood] by Gazpachogames 2013-12-16T18:14:00

"You only get one childhood" is a great interpretation of the theme. The game is great, but it has one really annoying characteristic: When you change direction, your character's feet move in the opposite direction to the direction you want to move in. So if you're near a ledge, and want to back up, he'll swing a little bit in the opposite direction, falling over the ledge you wanted to avoid.

It's rather difficult to get a feeling for depth. I think that if you made it possible to move your head a bit, that would help a lot.

Oh potato, how I want to take you with me on my journeys!

Shopping Madness by Mago 2013-12-20T21:02:00

I like the audio, tho I turned it down to 4% in windows, so it's loud. I also encountered a bug where I jumped across aisles soon after picking up an item, tho it recovered fine. Otherwise it's a nice find-the-item game. Whether the amount of time is enough or not is sort of random tho. I don't really have a good solution on how to fix that... Still, I had fun.

Holiday Chopper Frenzy by mcgraw 2013-12-20T22:25:00

Fun game. When one of the birds started pushing me I basically said aloud: HEEEEYYYY! :)

A realistic depiction of the modern educational society, Part I by Citiral 2013-12-20T22:40:00

Five stars for theme and innovation. As many others said, giving just one chance was a really good decision. I'm gonna follow the game's advice and go back to my videogames now :)

Spectral Sword by kratorspore 2013-12-20T22:56:00

Wow, you actually managed to make me nostalgic for games like lands of lore, or eye of the beholder. Maybe the idea of having a 3D first person tile-based game is not as outdated as I may have thought. It'd be interesting to see someone explore this farther.

LD31 — Entire Game on One Screen

War in VR World by hadesfury 2014-12-08T14:11:00

Oooo! An RTS! I can appreciate the fact that the cost of things is at least within the same ballpark as the resources you collect. Tweaking it will obviously require play-testing - which requires time we don't have in Ludum Dare. Usually people shy away from games like this, so I can appreciate it when devs actually attempt it, and come out ahead.

Contest Simulator: Studio Winning by atrodo 2014-12-08T19:13:00

I really like games like this - games that make you imagine. They can create a better atmosphere than graphics - even as absurd an atmosphere as being locked in an apartment with salvation lying in winning contests.

Alien Machinery by glbs 2014-12-10T15:46:00

The soundtrack in the back of my head was ViHart (youtuber) going "triangle triangle triangle triangle..." And this is by no means a bad thing! :D

Underwater Fortress by orion_black 2014-12-09T18:13:00

After like 10 attempts, I finally managed to survive the first wave, however took a casualty. I see great potential, but the game could stand to be easier - or at least an easy option to exist. I like resource management games otherwise.

Coin Toss Simulator 2015 by Mekuri 2014-12-10T17:25:00

Space Rift Shooter by salmelo 2014-12-10T15:49:00

There is sound...

Anyway, the graphics and sound are fine, and it fits the theme, however I find it very difficult to control my ship. Perhaps making the direction of the ship controlled by the mouse, or alternatively making everything slower, would help.

Ludum Clicker by RedPanda 2014-12-08T18:39:00

Hmm... So I just came from another clicker game, hence I don't know how to rate this properly. It's technically a clicker game, however it didn't grab me as much as some other clicker games. I think the reason might be in the lack of visual feedback. If you had floading +n labels emanate from the TV every time I clicked, or perhaps technobabble terms like "hack", "hello works", "print", "debug", "compile" etc. These could also emanate every time the various developer types added value. That way you could see the developers actually "working", past just the number at the top increasing. Additionally, you could make different types of developer emanate different types of text, or different colour, or different size, so you could tell those apart. Anyway, just some feedback and possible solutions. The audio is neat, btw. I like looks that don't get repetitive.

Simple enough gameplay. There's a slight problem (if you can call it that) in that the screen is twice as wide as it is tall, so you don't really see enemy cubes coming from the top and bottom as early as from the left and right.

BARKLEY: SHUT UP AND SCREEN by bhopkins 2014-12-10T16:25:00

A fun little mini game. Enjoyed it.

I would hire this sheep herder, seems to know how to do his job.

Don't Touch The Light by Jean Phenix 2014-12-08T14:34:00

Neat concept, I like it. Needs an indicator at the start to tell you that you should start moving in a direction - I didn't actually know what to do. Also I found a bug in one of the levels: http://ss13.eu/dump/laptop/2014-12-08/2014-12-08_15-32-39.png

The Fast and the Flatulent by Drtizzle 2014-12-08T14:16:00

I've been following your updates in the news feed and been looking forward to playing this! You did not disappoint! This is... HARD! And yet I want to play more! :D

Maze Escape by Gins 2014-12-10T13:56:00

I really like the way you extend the screen. The game also progresses really nicely - new abilities get introduced well. The game gets fairly difficult towards the end tho (bottom left section) - unless I missed a grappling hook ability somewhere...

Letter Run by Grehg 2014-12-08T19:35:00

Neat! I can see something like this being used as an educational game. Will have to show this to a coworker

A Link Between Screens by trykondev 2014-12-10T10:29:00

I like the level reorganization mechanic, pretty innovative.

Cat Care by Packer 2014-12-08T19:06:00

We need to take good care of the building blocks of the Internet. Thank you for this educational game :)

Man on the Field by Double Zero One Zero 2014-12-08T15:14:00

One of the best games I have played so far! Reminds me of "Papers, please" and "Cook, serve, delicious".

The feeling when the intake of soldiers slows down, and you know perfectly fine that it's because they are all dead... because of you... Wow... Anyway, absolutely awesome. Hope to see this developed further into a retail product.

Greeny GRUB by pht59x 2014-12-10T17:33:00

Took a few tries to understand the controls, but they seem alright once you understand them. A fun little experience.

Penguin Savior by Samuel Arminana 2014-12-10T09:38:00

I lose, I suck D:

I like the fact the surrounding area - the stuff off 'screen' - actually changes. Otherwise I just don't think the game being on an 'ingame screen' helped the game.

Super TransGalactian Hyper-Billiards 2014 by Andrew Quartermain 2014-12-08T18:10:00

Neat game, however my experience was hindered by the web page moving when I pressed the arrow keys or space. The easiest, most painless solution that I can suggest (however by far not the best solution) is that you set the style of the html or body tag to use overflow:hidden. This disables scrollbars. You need to ensure your page is understandable without scrollbars tho.

Snowbert by spacedoubt 2014-12-09T17:41:00

You have no idea how happy this made me!

Rescue the princess by eruiz00 2014-12-10T13:33:00

Neat! I love the various stages, surfaces, monsters and such. The web version did not play well tho, so I downloaded the windows jar.

Kuch Bhi ! by bORAT 2014-12-10T13:10:00

Difficult at first, however quick to master. Of course if you mess up and get a weird angle, there may just be no way to recover from that.

DisChord by Grindstorm 2014-12-10T10:02:00

Very good level design! Good progression of levels, training levels which introduce new concepts, etc. Overall a very good game.

Go Out Screen by allanolivei 2014-12-10T13:21:00

Neat! Love the idea and the execution. Best of all, this idea could be expanded a lot, so if you want to continue development after LD, you have a lot of things you can do.

SL1M3 by gogo199432 2014-12-10T18:05:00

Fairly straight-forward game. Nice level design, nice speed of introducing new concepts, and 'tutorial' levels or sections to teach players these concepts. Nice job.

SheeBall by dieblume86 2014-12-10T13:40:00

Woah, there is a lot of game here! Neat!

ColorBlocks by kiiro94 2014-12-08T18:49:00

A very good entry! I enjoyed it a lot. Has a... super hexagon + audiosurf vibe to it, which I like. Anyway, I just thought I'd say that I am not completely convinced by the game over condition, which is triggered if you are hit while mid rotation. I understand the thinking behind it, I just think the game would be even better with more squares to attach to you, and without that game over condition. Just my 2 cents.

Swat Team by rainshapes 2014-12-09T17:19:00

Oh neat, a multi user game! I played with a co-worker. Pretty neat game. I also love your interpretation of the word 'screen'.

Helga Kills Everything by mutatedsoftware 2014-12-09T17:57:00

I saw Helga in one of the posts during the jam, and was really, really confused. I'm so glad I found it in the list of games. :D

Orbit Jumper by Luminar 2014-12-10T09:43:00

People tend to avoid developing games, where gravity pulls in unintuitive directions (ie anything other than down.) I don't know that it worked well in this game either. Good attempt tho...

Lumit by Leaghorn 2014-12-20T16:04:00

I played for the score. Got into the current top 10, that's good enough. Granted restarting didn't actually -display- my score, but I got enough to get into the current top 10 so nyaa~

Lumit by Leaghorn 2014-12-20T16:40:00

I entered my name as "LIME :D" That's probably why it didn't work.

Box Tower Defense by mrploszaj 2014-12-10T10:55:00

Might want to correct 'web' to something else, since you have to download it.

Asterion by TiagoJDFerreira 2014-12-10T13:06:00

Very good graphics and sound, tight controls. Now that you have all the tiles sorted out, you should probably add a few more levels or layouts.

Teeny Tiny Little Ball by FerraWare 2014-12-10T17:46:00

Really fun.

Meeting Survival by sdeng 2014-12-10T11:01:00

Bryce Darling by Slothradamus 2014-12-10T11:13:00

Oh neat! A 2 player game! :D

Cuberot by guldlock 2014-12-10T10:19:00

Neat! I liked how downwards gravity affected all the sides, and how you made sure that all effects were visible on screen the first time, so you knew what happened when you stepped on a pressure plate, or something moved due to gravity - so you didn't have to backtrack through the entire world, looking for what changed. A very good entry.

I have monsters in my head by Kaiziye 2014-12-10T11:20:00

This is pretty neat! I like how you have to evaluate if it's worth the risk to keep your eyes closed for longer or not, since - if you keep them closed for a brief time, you know where you are, but if you keep them closed for long, the world situation changed a lot, meaning you might die as soon as you open them.

Mountain Life by flouiz 2014-12-10T12:14:00

Unity, Unity, Unity, Unity, Unity, Unity, Unity, Power Point, Unity, Unity... hold on, back up. Powerpoint??

I like it when people use creative platforms. Last time someone made a game in matlab, this year you're the first I came across who made a game on a strange 'platform'.

The Dinorawr Tales by StormAndy 2014-12-10T11:23:00

Dinorawr :D I love that name :D

The escape is a lie? by Strandypants 2014-12-10T11:26:00

The Hall Effect by aranscope 2014-12-10T11:30:00

Yeah I love the death effect :D

Flaming Resistance by whitematterteam 2014-12-08T18:29:00

I like the graphics, and mood of this game, and the sound too (even tho you opted out of those). One of the really important things in platformers tho are sharp controls. Unfortunately the magma continues to move for quite a while after you let go of A or D. So that is where I would see improvement. Additionally, the game has very low contrast. I had to adjust my screen brightness to even see the platforms. So yeah, consider increasing the contrast between the background and platforms.

Disco Pixel Art by ChrisAntaki 2014-12-10T12:09:00

DANG IT!! I got up to 11 on the 5x5 scale and made a mistake! Of course to get to the 5x5 tile I completed the 16 long sequence in 4x4 so I guess that is my limit.

DFGH Mission by Germain 2014-12-09T18:27:00

Oooooooo :D I like!

Artemis meets Cook, Serve, Delicious. Nice!

I like that you polished the controls you have instead of cramming in many other controls, which may or may not work right in the end.

Hunt The Yeti by Elisée and friends 2014-12-10T11:42:00

Heh, one of those games where I completely forgot it was made for LD and that I'll have to give it a score at some point. I just continued to play it :D Can't think of a higher commendation than that, really.

LiliLight by Carduus 2014-12-10T17:59:00

Love the sense of helplessness that games, where your primary weapon is just a torch, make.

CUBE Clicker by Polyganz 2014-12-08T17:20:00

Okay.... OOOKAAY... No. I took therapy, I will NOT click the cube. I... will NOT... click.... click... click................................. click... D:

Help D:

Anyway, I work at a lab for computer graphics, and all of us... every single one of us who work here, were gathered around a computer, playing CUBE CLICKER. You, sir, are responsible for stopping ground breaking research at a university graphics lab for half an hour... :D

Still! I found a bug. The tooltip for extractors shows the number of spheres.

Beat Bop Delicious by Kitch 2014-12-20T19:13:00

I tried it quite a few times and only ever got to 1:15, which is basically just a little bit after the 6th console unlocks.

I like how it has the cook, serve, delicious vibe, however would prefer keyboard controls, simply because mouse accuracy is an issue.

Life of a Geek by Tommyno222 2014-12-08T13:51:00

Neat game! There seems to be a fair bit in common between your game and mine :D

Chara wars! by dlan 2015-04-21T22:15:00

An interesting game. There is a slight problem in that typing characters on the keyboard and using the mouse requires three hands... so the mouse part could probably be moved to the keyboard too. But otherwise it's a perfectly solid game.

In for a pound by JonathanG 2015-04-21T22:23:00

Really nice graphics, really fitting sound, awesome atmosphere, tense gameplay. Lots of positive things I can say! I however did run into a bug where my torch ran out and right clicking did not load new batteries, so I was left with no torch D: None the less, awesome entry! Now go rate some games so you rank higher and others get to see this!!

Untitled (Make up a name?) by apophenia 2015-04-21T22:26:00

Vacuum Attack by Pisti 2015-04-22T21:38:00

Post my highscore? Okay. Twenty. D:

I tried about 10 or so rounds, and I just couldn't get more D: I could fend off the first few attacks and then I died. The art style is really good, as is the music. The game is well polished and has a sense of being finished, which is amazing for a compo game. Great job, shame I suck at it :D

Please rate more games so others get to see this.

Chainsaw Katana by MattTyson 2015-04-24T00:32:00

It seems that I just get a white screen and nothing seems to load. Additionally I would just remind that since you entered the compo, you should also provide the source for the game.

Sentient RPS by dualtagh 2015-04-24T00:39:00

Oh hey, I remember this game in the feed from when LD was still on. I'm glad you submitted! I would suggest assigning the three types of attacks to three buttons - ie. A, S and D. You really have something fun here, which is not something everyone can claim. I really think you should develop this further.

Stop the Goblin Army by rhill 2015-04-21T22:38:00

Car controls are really fitting, slamming the car into the pins sideways is really neat! :D

Raimundo's Rampage by DrZanuff 2015-04-21T22:43:00

The "web" link does not work, the embed does tho. Really cool platformer, very nice visuals and control. Clear instructions on what you should do in the tutorial. Fitting and nice sound effects.

Elementary by Kikkers 2015-04-22T00:45:00

I tried this twice, the first time everyone died fine, the 2nd time the yellow guys did not die. I like the GTA2-esque top down perspective tho.

Blank entry, someone should probably remove this. I'm leaving this comment to remind me to check back later to see if something appears here or if it gets deleted.

Cassette by Noah Ratcliff 2015-04-21T23:04:00

I went through the whole thing. Had a lot of trouble on level 4 or something where you have to land a box on another box and then gently push the whole thing. Took me like 20 attempts to do that. Afterwards, the difficulty dropped quite a bit. A very good entry, I enjoyed it.

Fish n' Ships by nickonetwenty 2015-04-21T23:16:00

A few buoys and you'd have had a boat racing game :D Sure it'd have nothing to do with the theme, but it'd have been a game! You were much closer than you think, and made a lot more than you give yourself credit for.

The morning type by Liam :D 2015-04-20T09:07:00

Thanks for the review :D
Pressing space or enter is not required, however will also not make it so you fail a word. So if the text "hello there" appears on screen, typing "hellothere" and "hello[space]there[enter]" is equivalent, as is "he[space]llothere" :D

The morning type by Liam :D 2015-04-22T14:39:00

Awesome! Thank you so much for the typo report! As you might expect, adding the words was one of the final things I did. At the time, I was severely tired and transcribing them inevitably led to mistakes. All three reported typos have been fixed as they are "typo class" errors. You can see the bugfix in the commit log here: https://github.com/balohmatevz/The-Morning-Type/commit/24866d034c567ebf5eb0db61c3e5185790c91b46

Are those animated sprites or 3d models?

Lazy Sunday by CtrlAltTea 2015-04-21T23:53:00

I love the sprite for the main character. The other sprites are nice too, but the main guy is amazing. There are a few bugs, and I guess your job is to debug them and keep your beer safe. I had some trouble with this, as they would move a bit unpredictably at times. Still, a solid entry.

Panash & Plume by tikilittle 2015-04-22T00:25:00

Neat! :D Subject matter I have not seen in LD games before! And voxel art, I love voxel art :D

Good Morning by RandomSpark 2015-04-22T00:10:00

I like the art style and music. On the interaction side there unfortunately isn't a whole lot - it took quite a bit longer to download than to play. Still, a nice entry on the graphics and sound side, and it absolutely could be used as a framework to expand on - hidden object games, visual novels, adventure games are just examples of what you could make this into.

Brendan Lehman by neurochems 2015-04-22T00:19:00

Really neat idea and the lighting model is really good! There are some control issues tho, and the jump angle takes some getting used to - the fall at the end of the jump is very steep, would prefer if it was an arc. You said this was one of your first Unity projects tho, which is pretty amazing. Compared to my first Unity project, this is great (see my LD26 to feel good about yourself :D )

King Is Alone by IL_yoshioka 2015-04-21T14:52:00

Not a fan of the w s x key combination, I think 1, 2, 3 or q, w, e or a, s, d on the keyboard would work better, it's just not comfortable to hold your fingers over w, s, x. There are some graphical errors (troll rotation), the difficulty is sort of unpredictable - There was a time I got swarmed which was actually really fun, but afterwards it got super easy again. Music is nice.

Jump Kick Fury by BrutalQueen 2015-04-21T14:57:00

Looks good. I got defeated in just a few levels, but the controls seem good. Would prefer to have a little more warning before the enemy attacks so I could block more reliably - at least in the lower levels. The only silly thing I noticed was when reading the controls: Sure, try using the arrow keys, space and the mouse :D. I love the roll animation.

Soundefender by yackeroeni 2015-04-21T15:12:00

Okay so the game's main mechanic is fun. I don't know if it's pedagogical or not, but I have to give you a hard time about presentation and the severe lack of instructions. "Click the sound makers on the left to defend yourself." does not say anything. I thought I first thought I had to click the circle closest to where the incoming square was going to hit. Then I noticed the sound indicator coming from the circle, I thought I had to click on the correct circle when the animation was going on. No, in fact what you have to do in this game is match the higher pitched response to the lower pitched notes that are played. You do this by toggling the circles on the left, which are played in a loop from top to bottom. The dash in the vertical line indicates which circle is going to be played next. Failed to load in kongregate - I will take a look at it again to see if it's something on my end or if others experience the same problems.

kyler by eatme 2015-04-21T15:29:00

Hello, the "web" link takes me to some java source files in dropbox. You should compile this and upload it as a jar. There should be a "build" link in the IDE you use, and the compiled content is usually in a folder called "dist" or "build".

Kojo Kumah by k0j0 2015-04-23T17:49:00

The animation is great and the simplistic art really works.

Hacked by Nate 2015-04-21T15:43:00

Pretty neat. I got to about 5000 points and sort of realised it was too easy tho. There should be deeper files and a really cool feature would be to make that selectable - so you could get up to 3 and remain at 3 for, or 4, or 5, or 6 - depending on how comfortable you are with a keyboard. Really simple to do, huge added value.

The web distribution does not work this way - You'll need to upload that somewhere where the file will actually be run. Look at kongregate or gamejolt or a web hosting provider. I like how you used Unity code to make it seem like it's hacker code :D

Watermelon Shootout by dicksoncho 2015-04-23T17:54:00

Unfortunately the web player still fails with "invalid data file". Perhaps you should recompile.

Rando Shmup by HazeAI 2015-04-23T18:00:00

Not bad for your first submission, the fact that enemy bullets don't kill the player sort of defeats the purpose of the game tho. That part is something you really should have focused on. So next time, when it becomes obvious that you only have very few hours left to complete the game, work on the most essential features that make it a viable game.

Aqua Marine by Bashabookoos 2015-04-21T15:59:00

Love the presentation and user experience. Great indicators of what you should be focusing on, where to go, etc. There are a few kiiinda cheap ways of killing you - like the time you get your first gun... and second gun... where an enemy rushes you, but those are all probably just effects of the lack of time. So yeah, really good entry.

Bunny Attack by texdata 2015-04-21T23:36:00

Would it perhaps be possible to get a Unity plugin build as well? The WebGL export is problematic, and enabling NPAPI is simple enough in Chrome. And it won't be until build 45 when it is actually removed.

Good start. I'm not sure if the ability to slowly climb walls is intentional or not, but it works.

Gravity Flow by Filippy 2015-04-21T16:15:00

Interesting and new. I didn't get it at first tho. After I did get it, I found it fairly difficult to reliably click on the character while in motion - ie while falling. Also I could not jump while running. Otherwise something I haven't seen in LD before, so it gets points for that :D Audio is also great.

Please, Be Careful When You Use It by Emma 2015-04-21T16:22:00

Oh god, some of those designs are just... aagh... "No you game I didn't want you to put the hammer THERE!". I like creative and different things. Does this count? Sure, why not. If you have the self control to not just look through the bottom row, you can have some fun with this.

An Unconventional Title by Shrumdog 2015-04-22T19:05:00

The idea is solid, but the single most important aspect in platformers is movement precision. For your next platformer, I suggest you focus on that - spend as many hours as it takes to make movement - jumping and moving around - as clean and intuitive as possible. In this particular game, the poor movement unfortunately completely undermines the thing that makes this platformer unique - being able to shape terrain.

Melon Jam by kaisama 2015-04-22T19:07:00

Melon jam sounds yummy. While I like the static screenshots for being so colourful, I think it looks too busy in game. Might want to desaturate all the background graphics.

SpookMaster 5000 by bellicapax 2015-04-21T16:33:00

A dude comes up and takes the treasure and then an exception happens, which stops the game from being playable. You might want to also provide a plugin web version. I know the Chrome NPAPI thing scared everyone, but the WebGL export just isn't ready yet in Unity, and enabling NPAPI is easy enough - at least until Chrome 45.

I like the shadow-less, cartoony world. And I like the fact you can customize the character. Sure it may be simple customization, but few LD games offer customization. The way you can have hundreds of projectiles on screen is also cool.

Ball-O-Ball by Mohagged 2015-04-21T16:58:00

You'll need to host the web files somewhere where they can be run - ie kongregate or gamejolt or some website hosting provider.

Jeremy Johnston by jeremypj 2015-04-21T17:02:00

"Web" link contains a zip with the files, which are run in a browser. You should find a web hosting provider and upload those so people can just run the test.htm page there.

Otherwise, the game is neat, but unbalanced. I had like 60+ seconds in no time. Also the camera should follow the player more closely. I only ever got killed by off-screen enemies.

Kitty Kommander by TheGhostmonk 2015-04-21T20:09:00

The art is fine. I like the laser pointer controlling cats interpretation of the theme. The cats do have a tendency to just stutter in place after a while tho. Also the "web" link is actually a windows build. Additionally, this game did cause my firewall to trigger, which is a cause for concern, however ran fine without me exempting it from the firewall.

I hate being the first reviewer of this as text adventures are really not my thing. I would hwoever appreciat if you uploaded this somewhere which didn't require a download, as it is an html file. I however have to admit I did cringe a little bit at the theme namedrop at "you've been collecting the sap. A pretty unconventional weapon you must admit.".

So yeah, unfortunately this is not something I personally have much experience in, so I can't give a fair criticism.

PREDICTABLE??? by arteiro69 2015-04-21T20:35:00

Are you only providing the source code? Can you not build the game and provide an already built exe file? I mean I'm seeing a lot of c++ files in there, and I'm guessing that's a visual studio project file... at the top of Visual Studio, there's a drop-down box. Select "distributable" or something (defaults to "debug") and build. It should create a "dist" directory. Just zip the files in there and upload those.

ZERO by Lare 2015-04-21T20:43:00

A very good start to your Ludum Dare career! :D I like the controls, they are predictable and precise. Of course right clicking brings up the context menu instead of reversing thrust, but hey, left click is good enough! :D All in all a perfectly solid game!

Choice by Age-inator by greatergoodguy 2015-04-21T20:55:00

So at what point did this game change from choosing which fruit to destroy to choosing between which human nationality and race should die?

Dumb unfunny real world issues aside, the two weapon modes do the exact same thing, just one from the start and the other from the end - the exception being an off-by-one error which causes the one from the end to take one tick longer. What I think the two modes should be is this: Age accelerator adds green bars and the other mode should remove green bars. Therefore you choose the mode that leads to the enemy's death sooner.

I did like the graphics and ray effect tho.

Okay, so I was going to say how I like the floating instruction text and such touches, but this is actually a really clever idea. With unity's new ui system you can anchor things to different sides, which you should do for the "fighting" screen. On my laptop's resolution I just saw "Get cleverbot to s". The text should be anchored to the right side of the screen. Otherwise very innovative.

Unfortunately this type of game is not something I am personally into, so I don't know how to compare it to existing work. The brevity was perfectly fine for me. The "web" link no longer works - links to a deleted google drive folder.

http://ss13.eu/dump/laptop/2015-04-21/key.bmp

No. I don't mean to be too harsh, but this really needs a better, more standard control scheme. For example: 1-9 and 0 select characters, "a" and "d" to move, ctrl to jump, space to attack. I don't know, something other than the horror that the control scheme here is... I feel terrible for being so harsh, but I tried hard to actually master the control scheme and just... no...

Well... I got up to fame 5 or 6 and then realized I was doing the same thing over and over... It's definitely interesting and a technical achievement, however doing this type of game requires a lot of fine tuning, reward management, time management, etc. On the plus side, I did manage to craft the Bieber CD that defeated Hitler tho.

The Karma Mongers by Pavel M. Dlouhý 2015-04-21T22:03:00

Terrormorph by Yann Eves 2016-05-04T04:07:00

The game itself is a fairly simple voting/elimination game. It was quite a challenge to get it to work. I like the execution a lot - the fireworks are neat, the sounds are good, graphics are neat, etc. The choice of fonts and colours is very fitting. The game also works surprisingly well for a network game. On the technical side, it's actually really neat. It suffers from being an LD game that requires a certain number of simultaneousness players though. It also correctly identified the traitor between "Liam", "Lime", "LL", "Lime Too" and "Lemon" -> Lemon.

Spyshifting by Morgawr 2016-05-04T04:15:00

At first I thought It'd be a very simple maze-like game, but quickly realized that there are ever more layers of complexity and challenge. I like how new puzzle elements are introduced one by one. I also like that the vision ranges are clearly marked. I like the little animation that happens when you switch to another guard colour. I don't like the cardinality of view directions (meaning how they change without warning), but maybe that's because I'd personally prefer this to be more of a commandos-style game instead of a level learning and memorization game. Unfortunately I could not get past one of the levels - the one where two red coloured guards look into each other. I did get to the exit, but upon entering the exit, I got a "fail" sound and it restarted the level.

Bugs aside, I like the game. Pretty fun and different.

Space Escape by hcorion 2016-05-04T03:43:00

Unfortunately this game causes an error on startup.

Slimy Business by kapsel2 2016-05-04T03:50:00

I really like the animation, red on-hit effect and the fact that stones use collision boxes that aren't squares, meaning you can glide around them. Pretty neat. The presence of audio is also a great bonus!

Spook by adriancooney 2016-05-04T04:21:00

Unfortunately I felt completely overwhelmed by the 2nd level and resorted to complete trial and error. I see how it works, I just couldn't mentally process it. I would recommend changing it so it's a series of 3x3 and 4x4 challenges, which lead to different exits, which connect (in a non-interrupted way) to other challenges. So it's like a maze with puzzle pieces in between. That's just an idea though. I do like how it looks and the transitions and "blocked path" indicators.

LD37 — One room

RpToy by HJP 2016-12-29T16:22:00

The play/credits/exit buttons weren't interactable on one attemt, but restarting fixed that. The interaction (clicking on a unit and selecting an action and then the target) is fairly clunky, and I'm not sure there's a way to close the actions menu once open if you want to change the piece you want to move.) Otherwise the game seemed to work fine, though I'm not sure what attacking an enemy did. I saw money change, but wasn't sure whether that was just from the turn ending or from the attack.

The Room Voyage by Tomahawk2001913 2016-12-29T16:25:00

It ran on my computer. There's not much there, though I did laugh at the rooms flying at each other. I like that you can shoot out bullets and not just rooms.

minecorp by kiesenverseist 2016-12-29T16:37:00

Quite interesting. I like ludum dare entries with resource management and crafting. Granted they tend to not be balanced for maximum fun, and yeah, I think this game might not be balanced perfectly yet. Still. Good entry.

Gingerbread Houses Inc. by Bookworm31 2016-12-30T15:22:00

Really interesting and innovative for what I usually see in Ludum Dare. Ofcourse the UI and general interaction could use some work, however I think it's still quite impressive you managed to create the systems needed to make this work in just 48 hours. Good job.

LD38 — A Small World

The Hungry Planet by madalaski 2017-05-18T16:15:30Z

I enjoyed the control scheme and the visual touches (such as the zoom-in effect at the start of the game). At the start I had trouble hitting other asteroids and would end passing in front of them, but I got used to that relatively quickly. Seems like sometimes space becomes fairly empty though, I couldn't find an asteroid to crash into on one of my playhroughs though. It can also be fairly difficult to tell whether something is bigger or smaller than you sometimes, especially in the beginning. Still, I like the game and had fun with it :)

Hop Up by PietPtr 2017-05-15T09:45:34Z

I started playing this and wondered where it would take me. The initial game's aesthetic is fairly simple, not unlike most LD games. But then the stars changed colour and I remembered the epilepsy warning. Personally I would have preferred if the graphics went into surreal territory and not into something so extreme. It does get painful to watch after a while.

Planetary Defense Force by TeamMonumental 2017-05-15T09:59:38Z

The graphics are amazing, but the controls leave something to be desired. I feel like the game would play much better if you could just use your mouse - for example drag and drop the planet into the position you want it on its orbit. Zooming is also not necessary and only makes it harder to see what is going on, which may be the point of it, but I don't think it feels good.

The other bit of feedback is that enemies are difficult to see against the skybox. I'd consider making the skybox way darker so the enemies pop against it more.

The Curator by adcrusher 2017-05-15T09:38:49Z

Really nice bullet hell game, the controls are solid and responsive. The enemies and attacks are varied, with the world doing a number of different attack patterns. In combination with other enemies which may be on screen at the same time, it's difficult but fun.

One bit of silly behaviour I noticed had to do with the invulnerability timer, where if I hit an enemy, the invulnerability would wear off at the exact same time as the next wave of enemies reached me. I would have expected it to last past one wave or stop much before the enemies reached me.

This is the End: Small World by namrog84 2017-05-15T09:30:01Z

A really fun and interesting puzzle game. At the moment it's fairly easy and could use some balancing, but that's the sort of polish you can't normally do in a Ludum Dare.
