LD29 — Beneath the Surface

Please Come Back by PapyPilgrim 2014-04-28T15:35:00

I think I had exactly the experience you were going for.
Having the illusion I'd have a chance, feeling like my voice isn't audible at all, growing tired of the swimming, giving up, hoping to die quickly, but only sinking, knowing every effort is futile, waiting for a miracle. And it didn't happen :(
Great job!

Tile Flip by xevozfighter 2014-04-28T17:59:00

Small, but very solidly done :)

The Sea Has No Claim by dukope 2014-04-28T20:16:00

Looked for dukope's entry, was not disappointed.

It Came From The Sewer by Catman 2014-04-28T20:27:00

While it's a great idea that I had a lot of fun with, it comes down to finding the right path and then spamming the aliens as fast as possible until you win.
Loads of potential in this game though, really good work!
The graphics and especially the music are amazing, too :)

I am a Mole by graebor 2014-04-28T20:32:00

Totally not what I expected, but I left with a smile :)

Yadig - Yet Another Digger Inspired Game by anbreizh 2014-04-28T17:56:00

Nice idea, you have to collect time first by getting the worms, then dig down to get the jewels :D
Game crashed on me though with the following error (Windows):
"pygame.error: Surfaces must not be locked during blit"

Tsunami Cruiser by bvanschooten 2014-04-28T17:44:00

Brilliant game. I love how shooting down and up works with different physics because of the water, I like how that water is in waves, and the graphics are incredibly stylish. It feels so satisfying to have the high-arching torpedoes hit :D

Beneath Me by Fasox 2014-04-28T18:38:00

Creative idea. It's sometimes quite hard if not impossible to catch all the words though :(

Inside Look Activity Book by rylgh 2014-04-30T17:19:00

This is a book I wouldn't read to my kids ._.
At least not unless they really deserve it :)

Oligarch wars by enepomnyaschih 2014-04-28T18:52:00

One of my favorite games!
Every level brings something new to the table and keeps things interesting and fresh. It reminds me of Papers, Please! in a really good way.

Moon Mole Massacre by jcvsmc 2014-04-30T20:34:00

Probably the cutest take on Whack-A-Mole I have ever seen ^-^
It's like bubble wrap :3:3:3
Loved the music.

FedIt! by zedutchgandalf 2014-04-30T16:55:00

Very hard, but cool idea :)

Wriggle Worm by gikdew 2014-04-28T14:40:00

Simple, but fresh.

GroundBreaker by Figglewatts 2014-04-28T19:46:00

Wow, pretty well done for such a short time :o
Had a lot of fun exploring this world, the controls feel very natural to me.

You Are a Mole! by valgriz 2014-04-28T15:46:00

Fun little time waster :D
Well done on the presentation.
Bug report: game got stuck in pause when I restarted after I died.
On a minor side node, I wish the left and right keys were flipped, because for some reason it seems more intuitive to me to control the mole like a tank :o

Kappa cat by cinnamonmelonpig 2014-04-28T18:11:00

Funny little game you got there ^-^
The music sounds like a cat walking on a piano :3
It's also incredibly satisfying to get a power-up :D

Above and Beyond by Yozz 2014-04-28T15:02:00

Very nice concept, it's a bit repetitive though, as it seems one emotion always fills up enough to keep the game running once you figure out how to not waste your emotions, so I died on purpose after 7-8 minutes.
Very nice and relaxing music and smooth graphics.
Would have been interesting to have the music change depending on your emotional status or some unique aspects to each emotion.

Captain John's Buried Treasures by martijn 2014-04-28T21:20:00

Cool game, feels good to break everything with bombs :D
The music makes me want to move ^-^
Unfortunately it crashes on Windows 8 due to that nasty Game Maker sound glitch. Also I'd recommend to put the file into a ZIP rather than making it a raw EXE download because antivirus programs typically don't like that.

Greed for Gems by mortus 2014-04-28T16:58:00

Impressive graphics :)
I couldn't really get into it (darkness in an exploration game isn't really my thing), but I have a feeling that many will like this.

Mine Story by donan 2014-04-28T21:50:00

Very well done! Stacking up on upgrades made me feel so empowered :)

Shinoumi by Jhelle 2014-04-28T14:43:00

Nice dodging game, good job on the moving terrain and the particle effects.
Possible bug: in my first attempt, I started so high up, that I couldn't jump out of a gap because the top of the screen was in the way.

Haunted Mine by acerunox 2014-04-30T17:00:00

Your description sounds cool and you did a good job on the graphics :)
Too bad you can't do much in it yet :(

Totems by Brian Stegmann 2014-04-29T07:48:00

It didn't work in Firefox, but in Chrome it did.
I like the concept, although it was very hard to hear some of the pieces. Then again, I've never played music by hearing so that may be why it's was hard.

unnamed game with a mole by x1212 2014-04-28T11:02:00

Very choppy framerate in web version and very basic overall, but I like the idea with the flowers :)

Tetrix Zone by eskivor 2014-04-30T16:46:00

Interesting idea, unfortunately a bug lets you just climb up the wall to the cup by pressing left and jumping so there's not much challenge to this game :(
I tried to play one game fair though, and that was more fun :)

StromnetZ by Moosefly 2014-04-29T23:14:00

Very cool concept, loved it!
Good job on the tutorial, and it's nice that there are side-goals if you seek a challenge, or you can just connect the pipes for winning if you're not that good yet :)

Beneath The Lab by Techblogogy 2014-04-29T20:02:00

Cool concept, I got stuck on the third level though.
I think the cooldown for the right click is a bit too long, that makes it frustrating quickly.
There is potential with this though, maybe you keep up the work on it after the compo :)

Chacket Valleyparker: DRILL BUNNY by stvr 2014-05-04T08:54:00

Starts out really great, I like the mechanics. Getting a carrot feels really satisfying, and I like that you can drill through the rocks and the lava at the cost of overheating, although once these simple rules are figured out the game loses all of its challenge.

But considering the time constraints, you've put together a cool prototype of what could be an addictive game eventually :)

Whack-A-Burster by Fortyseven 2014-04-29T23:03:00

Whack-A-Mole :)
The game seems to have gotten stuck after a while, because nothing new happened.

the vole beneath by mcapraro 2014-04-30T07:36:00

Quite a cool idea!
It seems to only have a single level, right?
It is also a bit hard to get the bumps to be smooth enough for the nut to roll over, but I enjoyed solving that little challenge. Well done :)

Mermaid Scientist Massacre by pancakecity 2014-04-30T18:04:00

Pretty fun game :)
It's cool how the mermaid has the spirit to escape despite her really disadvantageous situation. I let the anger flow through me ^-^

Beneath the Core by Pickle 2014-04-29T22:50:00

Maybe I missed something but if you just press down the drill goes down and you win eventually :o
It has potential though, I can see the heating mechanic explored for more fun :)

Deep Down Beneath Us by Woo Sang Hwang 2014-04-28T15:12:00

The platforming is a bit awkward.
I accidentally pressed some button (debug key?) that let me fly across the map :o
The background sound sets a good cave exploring/horror mood, good job here!

Super Miner 2000 by ezombort 2014-04-30T17:34:00

Seems pretty standard at first, but I like that you have to go down first and then up again. Also it's interesting that the powerups seem to actually be bad for you, because they get rid of all your speed powerups :o
I like the cooldown mechanic for the bullets, it makes the player be more careful.

Unknown by Pietro Ferrantelli 2014-05-02T14:55:00

Incredibly addicting, and very fun. I kept dying and tried again and again. The controls are a bit frustrating, but I have a feeling they should be like they are.
Well done :)

Underground Bike Simulator by Muffinhat 2014-04-28T15:25:00

Very hard. I just couldn't get past that 2nd bat no matter how many times I tried.
There you see though, it's still very addictive, so I had lots of fun with it :) Well done!

pixel bat attack by enderosc 2014-04-30T07:32:00

It's really cool to see young people get into programming this early :D Good luck on your way!

Atoms - Literally beneath the surface by Anny 2014-04-28T09:59:00

This has potential. Could become a smart phone hit it you polish it up :D

Pinger by Chris Mondok 2014-04-28T18:07:00

Great idea, well executed and very polished :)

Mole Position by Glint Games 2014-04-28T21:55:00

Very slow on Firefox, very fast in Chrome :o
Also it's easy to get stuck in walls.

I see a lot of potential though :) If you fix up the controls and those frame rate problems, it could be great.
The graphics are very pretty too!

A Mole's Life by Gins 2014-04-28T11:15:00

Thanks for playing and for your comments!

@bvanshooten: It's a bit cryptic I guess (although the game should tell you what to do in the text box): In order to eat you need to first catch a worm (space) and then press E to eat it (while you hold it). I forgot to add the inventory status to the HUD so that is not as clear as I'd have liked it to be ^-^
The baby moles just creep around and eat worms that get close to them. As their mom, you're supposed to catch worms and bring them to your babies. Initially I wanted to add a scoring system based on how long your babies survive etc., but all it is now is a sandbox (almost literally) without any defined goals besides not dying yourself. But maybe you feel a bit bad about letting the babies die, then it's something at least ;)

@anbreizh: the slow pace of digging is intended, as the plan was to make the player prefer already existing tunnels over digging new ones, with the hope that it will lead to more of the player's thought put behind the tunnel layout.
I'm aware though, that this slow pace isn't for everyone, and you're right, repeatedly tapping the space bar isn't the most ideal way to do such a slow paced task for the player, instead it was the easiest way to do it for me as the programmer :(

A Mole's Life by Gins 2014-04-28T17:31:00

Thank you for the positive comments and suggestions, everyone!

@Oddly Shaped Pixels: Thanks, and yes, for me too once you dug a nice tunnel system there's not much left to do besides catching worms and eating them.
Regarding the simulation aspect: I actually watched an episode of a children's documentation about moles before I started programming to familiarize myself with the animal, so the things you see in the game are at least trying to be realistic, with a bit of creative freedom.

@Anny: That would be beyond all levels of cuteness :3 unfortunately I didn't think of doing that. I had different plans for them that I couldn't do because of the time constraints.

@dalbinblue: That's a good idea. I added 3 lines displaying the controls on the game's page. I hope that doesn't violate any rules..

A Mole's Life by Gins 2014-04-30T12:22:00

@thaaks: Yes, I like the water flow system myself. Unfortunately it's a bit buggy, and doesn't behave like real water when it comes to forking vertical tunnels, so I was considering to leave the water out of the final submission. But in the end, I enjoyed the look of it when it actually did work, so I kept it in :)

@longshorts: Yes, balance is a bit of a shortcoming here. For the record though, the propability of a worm appearing rises with horizontal tunnels though, because worms drop from tunnel ceilings. That's kind of what a real mole needs its tunnels for, too, to increase the chance of a worm unexpectedly dropping into a tunnel, which the mole will hear and then dash there to collect it.

@eskivor: It was planned, but I couldn't add it in time :(

A Mole's Life by Gins 2014-04-30T17:36:00

@vilya: There is not supposed to be a pop-up dialog :o
I don't get one either. It seems I need to switch to a different webhost for next time, if it puts pop-up ads there. That is a big no. Thanks for informing me of this.

A Mole's Life by Gins 2014-04-30T17:40:00

^It doesn't seem to happen all the time. But I just got one before after disabling my adblock. Sorry to everyone who has gets to see this pop-up, that is definitely not my intention, and the host advertised being ad-free. I'll see if I can host my entry elsewhere.

A Mole's Life by Gins 2014-04-30T19:13:00

The pop-up problem has been resolved. They should be gone now. If you still see any, please let me know!

A Mole's Life by Gins 2014-05-03T09:27:00

@Moosefly: Wow thanks for this lengthy comment and the screenshot, and even reading all the other comments before writing your own!

Seasons and a day-night cycle would be a cool addition indeed, thank you for that suggestion :)

And I can imagine that song like the one you described to work well with my game. In case you ever drop by again, could you give me a link to it, so I can try to experience it myself with that? :)

A Mole's Life by Gins 2014-05-03T16:14:00

@Moosefly: What a lovely song :)
I can imagine it fits well with an animal's life.
Thank you for coming back and linking it!

Holy Moly by thaaks 2014-04-28T19:56:00

Simple but effective idea. Would be cool if there were more things added with each level besides more worms :)
I liked the idea with the boot (although it's very gruesome :P)
The game seems to suffer from a memory leak or something in Firefox, as it slows down beyond playability after a while.
In Chrome it works fine though.

Insect War by mikedirl 2014-04-28T12:55:00

Unfortunately very buggy, there are green lines from a bad tiling engine (presumably) that are all over the place and you can fall and jump through floors. The framerate gets very choppy in my browser, too, and these things made it physically impossible for me to fit into a passage-way so I couldn't continue in the game :(

The music was nice though, and I could see some neat ideas.
I'll try it again later on my stronger computer, maybe if it doesn't have the framerate issues, the collision bugs won't appear either.

Digable Planet by Oddly Shaped Pixels 2014-04-28T18:20:00

Incredible that you could do this in only 48 hours :)
Very challenging, perhaps using 1,2,3 and 4 as shortcuts for the buildings would be useful.

Scavenger by longshorts 2014-04-29T23:32:00

Cool first game :)
It's a bit on the hard side when it comes to the low-ceiling jumps in the beginning, but once I figured out how to optimally get through the level it was fun. It has potential, maybe you'll work on it some more after the compo!

29 Leagues by Nition 2014-04-29T18:44:00

Enjoyed this a great deal :)
The music is so calming, I could just have it running in the background while doing other things, and I like the polygonish look of the graphics. I also liked the idea of having two phases, where the first one helps to extend your life.

GetOut by sniper33 2014-04-28T20:40:00

I can't play it :(
The cmd window opens and then nothing happens. It doesn't even write anything there.

Esc by Crumpet 2014-04-29T22:38:00

Wow. An incredibly powerful message. This really leaves me thinking, and that's a good thing to achieve. Good luck to whoever inspired you to make this game.

No Eyes Willy by blockbot 2014-04-29T23:24:00

Reminds me of Mario & Wario :)
It's a bit on the repetitive side though, but cute graphics :)

Whack-a-Meme by Mallot1 2014-04-30T16:51:00

It runs way too fast on my computer :(

The Mole People by Gaming_Ray 2014-04-28T22:15:00

Cool idea there :)
Very hectic, and each of the task is different.
Does get a bit repetitive after a while though because it's always the same task.
Btw, you can cheat with a nasty bug: if you go to the temperature and get it into the green area, and then out again, the meltdown timer will restart, so you could play forever by just pressing up and down and occasionally recharging :D

The Mole People by Gaming_Ray 2014-04-28T22:17:00

PS: I love how all the stuff is going on in the background, like all hell breaks loose if that mole is only a split second behind on his job ^-^

dig up the treasure by ills 2014-04-30T16:48:00

Unfortunately the game doesn't start for me :(
It gets stuck after the command line window pops up.

Doug Diggz by eatsleepindie 2014-04-29T22:22:00

Cool idea, I enjoyed it, but it seems impossible to get the requested 100 coins :o
Loved the music :)

DeepUnder by SuperMsp10 2014-04-29T22:45:00

The mechanic is very interesting, but it's buggy. I got stuck because a door teleported me into a rock :(
Feels a bit like portal, without the complicated part of creating portals :)

Dark Moles! by ninjascript 2014-04-29T23:00:00

Very hard, but a cool idea :) Whack-the-Mole, I have played a million times, but Bomb-The-Mole is new :)

Submarine of semi-Destiny by iMer 2014-04-29T22:42:00

Nice and simple game, well done :)

Clobsters by HartLaboratories 2014-04-28T21:25:00

Animation is great, very fluent, but it's also very confusing to get into.
Too bad I don't have anyone to try it out with me :(

Sprout by Nic V. 2014-04-30T17:11:00

Very cute art :)
Unfortunately it's not very fun to play, because it gets repetitive quite fast and there is never a sense of danger or urgency.
But I like the concept, something cool could sprout from this :)

Losing it by Fox_in_sox 2014-04-29T18:57:00

Very impressive look, too bad it has no sound.
I really enjoyed that the stealth was all about "listening" to the footsteps and then being quick with your movements.
The ending was funny and made me feel a bit bad ^-^

Burn a Moleman by Galdon 2014-04-28T09:01:00

Fun take on whack-a-mole. I like that instead of clicking the moles, you use the num-pad :)

The Colors Beneath the Surface by VictorDoval 2014-04-30T17:26:00

Nice idea, but it doesn't feel very satisfying to destroy those disks :) Some sound effects would have been nice.
Or perhaps multiple disks coming down at once.
Something cool can come out of this though, it's a good start :)

Drowning in Problems by Notch 2014-04-28T20:55:00

Simple but effective.

Come On, Sugar ! by Skywilly 2014-04-28T16:47:00

Whoever drinks that coffee will have an insane sugar rush :)

Mole Wars by Corné Dorrestijn 2014-04-28T21:12:00

This has potential. The fighting seems to be impossible as you take damage while the enemy attacks you. Perhaps add some knockback?
I like your idea of customizing the controls during regular play.

Beneath this cool, calm exterior by Lrnk 2014-04-29T23:08:00

BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BAAH :D
I was only waiting for a game using a-capella music :3
Twin-stick shooting mechanic felt very good too, first time I played a keyboard-twin-stick-shooter.
Loved the little messages.

HEMTS 2014 by Zazibar 2014-04-28T18:34:00

A whole game based on picking up and throwing stuff, including your dead enemies :) Well done.

Zits! by davidwparker 2014-04-29T23:26:00

Amazing photorealistic graphics!

LD31 — Entire Game on One Screen

Xmas Pinch by davisan 2014-12-09T16:10:00

Nice little puzzle game. Reminds me of FEZ but in all the directions! Cool music, too. Felt very Christmas-y.

Zombies 'N Spies by Wezley 2014-12-08T18:12:00

Interesting concept. Too bad it has no sound, that would have improved it a lot! Also I would have preferred screen related movement controls instead of tank controls.

CoinSlot by SuperDisk 2014-12-28T10:53:00

Pretty amazing idea, the entire game is indeed on one screen if you count the global machine, that's something I haven't seen yet in this LD. Well done!

Subpixel by Paul Sinnett 2014-12-08T03:11:00

Pretty cool idea! The different pitches for each color are very helpful to memorize the sequence, so you can/have to use two things: melody AND a graphical pattern at the same time. Really fun, good luck for the rest of the LD! This could have potential as a mobile app btw.

Talking Heads by ponk 2014-12-10T13:08:00

Haha that was funny and a bit of a head scratcher :)

The Paper Dance by TravisChen 2014-12-09T21:42:00

Now this is one of the prettiest games I've seen this LD.
Experience games aren't really my cup of tea, but for what it was, I enjoyed it :)
The music fits really well.

Vindwoo by Webravenz 2014-12-10T11:29:00

Nice 2-player asteroids game. Unfortunately didn't have a Player 2 available :( Great graphics!

SumoBall! by flyingbear 2014-12-09T21:38:00

Wow I played this for such a long time that I almost forgot to rate and comment :D

Brilliant idea and perfectly executed with some small bugs that you seem to have fixed already anyway. Good luck going for the throne this LD :)

Recall by snipercommand 2014-12-09T20:45:00

Really sweet game. What I miss are satisfying sound effects for doing the right thing, you know, to add a certain "rhythm" to it when you play and feel good about yourself :)

Fireman vs Fire vs Snowman by scriptorum 2014-12-11T09:01:00

People may complain that your game is on three screens, but those three screens are all on one screen, so theme accomplished.

Interesting idea and very simple to pick up and play! Like the graphics and the sound a lot.

ATTACK ON RADMARS by radmars 2014-12-16T19:40:00

Ooo that was pretty cool. Nice gravity gimmick. I loved the graphics and the detail in the effects, too. Great entry!

by gre 2014-12-19T21:47:00

Pretty fun, addictive to play.
It's a cool idea how being stronger also makes you an easier target, and it's fun to see other people's noses on the way :)

AZOR by Hellequin 2014-12-18T10:15:00

The graphics and sound are really well done, especially those splash screens, but on the gameplay side I find it lacking, as it feels to me like a very simple expansion of the Game Maker platformer tutorial. Also it pretty much ignores the theme outright.

Kudos for making a really moody game though, the story you're trying to tell comes across quite well with all those images in the beginning and the music, and from playing the game I get a feeling that was your priority anyway, so for 72 hours it's a solid effort.

Bubblemellow by cinnamonmelonpig 2014-12-10T12:49:00

That level 6 is the hardest haha.
Feels nice to control and it's quite relaxing. I attribute that to the music.

Star Grabber by mtinkerhess 2014-12-08T04:01:00

Pretty cool. The first half of the puzzles were quite on the easy side but now I'm stumped at Star#15. Hmmmm.

Scan Lines by KilledByAPixel 2014-12-17T09:02:00

That was a ride! Really cool use of the theme, and I finally beat it! Only thing that bugs me is the weird physics where the character acceleration and deceleration don't match up at all, which makes it very hard to time your jumps. That may come down to preference though, and the rest of the game was still brilliant.

SnowCard by mrexcessive 2014-12-16T19:24:00

Neat little time waster, it does get a bit repetitive though. Would be nice if there was a new part of the song each time you get a sequence right, and of course the hints outside the window could use more variety instead of just "find the very obvious balls and then the matching colors", but I like the idea behind this, it could turn into something really fun for kids :)

Pocket Contra Force by nodoxi 2014-12-09T16:38:00

Very amazing graphics and the music is very fitting. Also the game just FEELS so smooth to play, that's pretty good.

Only downside though is that the game ended up being repetitive and boring once I figured out that the optimal strategy is to just fire at the boss from the beginning of the level :(
With the level design slightly adapted, or maybe the range of your shots limited, that could easily be fixed, I think.

#CorporateCrimewave by DrHahn 2014-12-10T12:02:00

This is a really amazing puzzle game. One of the best games overall that I've played this LD. My only complaint would be related to the theme, since it's not the entire game on one screen, just the levels are all on one screen.

Moving Melody by ChuiGum 2014-12-16T19:52:00

I couldn't make it past that jump after that row of musical notes, no matter what I tried. A sound effect would be nice for when you collect musical notes. Unfortunately I don't know if there's more to come after that jump, but if you tell me how to do that jump, I'll try again.

Frosty Ninja by belva1234 2014-12-09T08:30:00

Not sure if I should rate you five stars in Humor or in Audio with that song :) I'll go with both!

Really fun, but a bit hard to control. It seems sometimes you jump really high for some reason.

Play Area by Halleflux 2014-12-28T12:40:00

That was quite innovative. Some brain teasers in there, and really good job on the tutorials.

Atomic Space Vikings by AtomicVikings 2014-12-11T14:28:00

Wow that was really impressive, and I'm not really a fan of strategy games but this was really well made! Congratulations on this!

MicroMayhem by tinykidtoo 2014-12-09T09:16:00

Very rough, but I like the graphics. Good job on those!
The force-grab sure has potential. Felt good to kill elves with it.

Didn't quite get the connection with the theme though. I know there's a screen in the game, but this game takes place on a desk, not on the screen.

Mini Minotaur by ljdp 2014-12-16T20:23:00

Creepy puzzle game! It's a bit on the easy side, but it's really creepy when you bump into the minotaur. The sound effect of the minotaur is a bit annoying though, and gets very loud when it comes close :(

Sky Organ by internetpaulicy 2014-12-08T04:08:00

Now that is a kind of game I haven't played before haha.
It's quite difficult with all those keys but so funny still :D

Pixel Adventure by Rnd 2014-12-09T07:55:00

Cool game, it really does have that ball machine aesthetic. The space bar flight bug makes the game easy, but also a lot less frustrating :D

Entomophobia by DoubleS 2014-12-10T15:33:00

Amazing! Intense! Died at the boss, but will try again later. This game is a blast to play. A gamepad option is the only thing this still needs to be complete!

Mobius Dungeon by nesis 2014-12-09T11:56:00

Amazing. Really cool concept of items preserved over screens, and very helpful tutorials that didn't feel like hand holding but like teaching. Never too much information at once, and still room left to explore on your own and acquire the knowledge from yourself. Good job!

Force Feedback by kumoi 2014-12-29T23:17:00

When I was a little kid and got the N64 rumble pack, I was worried that this would be the effect on it so I was afraid of using it and my parents had to convince me that it's not going to be like this. (I blame the over-the-top commercials on this one.)

Ring Ring Ring by InHelli 2014-12-10T15:47:00

Wow very scary game! That first time a monster ran at me DDD:
Don't like the mouse-relative controls, would prefer screen relative, but that's a design choice you probably took for a reason and other people might prefer it like this. Future versions might have an option for it :)

Screen Ego Aegis by LegacyCrono 2014-12-11T21:43:00

Haha that is brilliant. Awesome screen-in-screen effect.

0000 : Press Z by alvarop 2014-12-12T19:51:00

That was pretty intense! I wanted to try really hard to finish it, but then I got teleported into a wall (the "stairs" in that one level where the key and the door are each on one set of stairs) and got stuck :(

But it was fun while it lasted!

Maze Escape by Gins 2014-12-08T04:31:00

Woah, thanks for all these positive comments! Let's see about some points you guys raised:

1) Invisible walls/square not expanding: That is strange, I have played the game multiple times on all three of the major browsers as well as the Windows version, even after you pointed it out to me and I could not reproduce it. I would be very happy if someone could provide me with a screenshot and perhaps details on their browser, but since it all works for me, I imagine it'll be really hard to debug :( I'll see what I can do about it though after some sleep.

2) Walljump: You just need to touch the wall and press "Up". No need to press any directional keys at the same time. I can see though, how the walljump in addition with other moves required to pass hard parts can get a bit troublesome, but that's more or less intended. I will keep this in mind though. If I keep working on the game for a post-LD release, I'll see what I can do to improve the controls.

3) Painful sound effects: I put these together with bfxr, and some came out a bit more annoying than I wanted them. Sorry about that :( I did add an option to mute the sound effects though (press M).

4) Sound problems: I think this may be some issue in Game Maker Studio's HTML5 export. As everything worked well for me in 3 browsers I couldn't really do much about it. I'll do some research though to see if there are some GMS known bugs with audio that I can work around.

5) Crash: Thanks for the report, Phaax. Did you try using another browser or the Windows version?

Once again, thank you all for the comments, both the constructively critical ones as well as the really positive ones. It's super late, but once I got a bit of sleep, I'll go play all your games :)

Good night and have fun everyone!

Maze Escape by Gins 2014-12-08T11:26:00

I found out what caused the "screen not expanding/invisible wall" bug. It was a wall that was in the neighboring room. As a fix, I moved the wall a bit to the left, which changes nothing about the game besides that the wall is now visible. I hope this qualifies as a "typo" bugfix, as it's something I would have caught in a less tired state and makes the game appear "unbeatable" to those who experience it.

If any of those who reported this happen to come back here, please give it another try, and thank you for reporting.

Maze Escape by Gins 2014-12-08T21:47:00

@Fanttum: At that part, the trick is to jump, then dash attack underneath and then to the left at the pillar and then wall jump over to the other side :) It's complicated, but doable with a few tries ;)

Maze Escape by Gins 2014-12-10T12:04:00

Thank you all!

@BitOfGold: To get to the green key, you have to dash underneath the wall.

Maze Escape by Gins 2014-12-30T10:32:00

Whoah, top 50! Thank you all for playing and the positive comments and ratings!

Thanks for dropping in, Fanttum! Congrats to you too for your good rankings in Mood and Audio!

A Link Between Screens by trykondev 2014-12-08T21:56:00

I had an idea similar to yours once, but I didn't know how to properly use the movable map portions for fun gameplay. Your game shows how to do it. Hats off, I'll keep my eyes open for that promised full version!

No More Boxes by Tuism 2014-12-10T20:24:00

Wow pretty neat! 6 different characters and all based entirely on their interaction with boxes. Love it! I wish I'd have someone to play it with me, but I see the potential in it so I'm going to rate it quite highly even after my 2-handed 1-vs-1 fight haha.

ARENA++ by undefinist 2014-12-08T22:40:00

Cool idea, I wonder, does the enemy fire do anything?
Besides that I like the thought you put into the theme and the execution is well done.

Node Alpha by Geckoo1337 2014-12-09T07:36:00

Nice little puzzle game. Unfortunately I got stuck in a level (don't know its number) because there was no block with a laser :(

Also it's very annoying that the mouse isn't trapped in the window. I wonder if you can still fix this.

The graphics are very nice, especially in the final version.

Jamception by Crocanti de Pollo 2014-12-16T19:31:00

This is what programming must look like for non-programmers :D
I had lots of fun with this, I wish it was so easy in reality ^-^

Greeny GRUB by pht59x 2014-12-16T20:36:00

Fun time waster, I like how controlling the speed like this makes it an entirely different challenge to all the other "collect the stuff and dodge the other stuff" type of games. Also that there are more than 2 colors where the others can hide underneath differentiates it from other such games.

Release the Yeti by bazld 2014-12-09T20:32:00

Haha that was fun :)

Midnight Delivery by CamillaHorne 2014-12-09T16:02:00

Amazing fun puzzle game. Good choice of music and the graphics are just lovely.

Crowdsourced by tigerbyte 2014-12-10T10:35:00

Very interesting idea! Would be cool if you'd add more stuff in the future and flesh it out a bit more. This would work great on phones, too.

Snowbert by spacedoubt 2014-12-29T23:11:00

A cool little point and click adventure game, quite charming :) Just feels good to finish, the main character is so likable.

Swarm by stephenhaney 2014-12-08T22:37:00

Cool short game, I liked the idea of the hero getting smaller with each hit, so you'd have an easier time evading the more often you lose. That makes it an extra challenge to beat the game without getting hit :)

Sound effects really satisfying too!

BLAZE by taviandir 2014-12-08T03:41:00

Pretty cool, nice sound design :D
I like the idea, not an easy game at all. I wish the torches would give you a bit more light, as I can barely see the difference between having and not having one.

Glitch Adventure by unnamed1334 2014-12-08T03:24:00

Very cool idea! Unfortunately there's not much feedback on the actions you do, and it seems like collected orbs respawn, while I am not sure what I'm supposed to do in the top of the forest level in order to use the orbs (I think I got 4 of them, but nothing happens). Would be happy to give the game another whirl if this is answered :)

CERT(Fixed) by rd127p77 2014-12-10T11:38:00

Yey! I finally beat it :D I totally love that CRT effect!
Challenging level design, I would have wished for some more abilities or obstacles other than just spikes, but for what it is, it's really well done and that I played it over and over until I finally got to the end speaks for itself.

PIXELTRON by GameDevExtreme 2014-12-16T20:44:00

Cool interpretation of the theme, but I don't really understand the game :(

Jungle Night by BitOfGold 2014-12-10T12:08:00

Really polished little game, very fun to play and with room for future expansion. Power-ups or loot drops would be cool.

Mutable by Winterblood 2014-12-08T03:47:00

Pretty neat. With the transforming maze it's not easy to get to the center, but I finally made it :D Is it intended that it's hard to tell walls from floor?

Pong Invaders by Zabuza 2014-12-10T10:45:00

Love the idea behind this! Good job! With a bit of extra time and polish this could become pretty great!

Kuch Bhi ! by bORAT 2014-12-10T13:14:00

Interesting idea. Nice graphics on the extra environment :)

The Aardvark and the Manatee by Sanguine 2014-12-10T13:21:00

So beautiful and artsy. I like the idea of having it be 2 different mechanics for day and night but both are in the same screen. A bit repetitive though after a few cycles.

One by Fanttum 2014-12-08T22:12:00

Very philosophical game, I got to the part when I got the score and then I quit. That music is really amazing for the mood.

Spiral Dungeon by Pcholt 2014-12-10T11:26:00

Pretty creepy. I like how the sound gets louder when those enemies come to you. The spiraling is also a cool mechanic, good interpretation of the theme!

Sweet Honey Bear by Larry 2014-12-09T16:28:00

Very unique game, but not much to do it seems. I guess you had planned for powerups and healing but didn't get around to do it? Still intriguing concept, maybe you'll work more on this, post-LD :)

Flailing Arm Ninja vs Pirates! by RougeRogue 2014-12-09T16:50:00

Looks pretty cool. I tried to beat that first boss at wave 10 but I just couldn't do it. Perhaps life bars wouldn't be a bad idea to give the player an idea of how much damage the attacks do. Speaking of which, I just ended up mashing M the whole time since out of all the attacks I remembered from the title screen that's the one that seems to have taken out the enemies the fastest.

There's potential in this though, will you continue working on it?

Speismonster by vekjeft 2014-12-09T09:21:00

Cool ship building mechanic :D But I didn't quite understand it. The default ship is really hard to control, but I think there's lots of potential for this if you find time to refine the editor to make it more clear what you're doing and add more parts and such :D

Screen Cutter by squirrel 2014-12-09T09:28:00

Oh this is a really cool idea, but the execution is a bit on the easy side. Most of the time you just need to cut out two parts of the screen, and you can also "cheat" (at least it feels like cheating) just cut and paste the same chunk over and over again to reach everywhere.

But I think it's a really cool interpretation of the theme, maybe it would be a good idea to go a bit more "meta" with the game (having to go outside of the screen and such), if you continue working on it ;)

Path of Thorns by CosyCave 2014-12-09T20:13:00

Oh pretty cool but I got stuck in the 7th room, because I pushed a boulder from the previous room into it and that blocked the path and restarting didn't do anything.

The graphics are really charming, kudos for them :)

Snake Rider by ETHproductions 2014-12-09T20:37:00

Nice idea and well executed. But I died because of the physics implementation bouncing me randomly off the corner of the snake :( But that might be intended, as it might be too easy otherwise.

Go Out Screen by allanolivei 2014-12-09T15:52:00

Now that was a fresh experience :)
I'd love to see this expanded into a bigger game with more challenging levels!

ZOMBIE HUNTER by EverClipse 2014-12-08T03:51:00

Sorry I have no idea what's going on in this game ;_;

Train your Jedi ! by jarry 2014-12-08T03:33:00

That was quite exciting. Starts out slow but soon I didn't know which way to face. Being a Jedi is harder than I thought. UNLESS you just sit in a corner, out of the bots' reach ;) But I tried a lot of times before I cheated like this. Cool game!

I Am Technician by Murchurl 2014-12-16T20:40:00

Cool music, but very high learning curve :(

Mascarpone by Domicuc 2014-12-12T19:29:00

Nice tower defense game. The colors are a nice touch, but they really make the game a bit complicated if you don't expect them.

Forever Falling by danielilett 2014-12-09T09:36:00

Cool game, controls a bit slow, but that makes it even more satisfying to pull off complex gravity stunts :)

If only the game wouldn't reset you to the very first level if you die, and I also do not approve of the time limit, especially in the "Flippy Bird" level it seems that I have no chance to get through in time.

I like that you don't really control the cube's movement directly but indirectly through the rotation. Good choice for this kind of game!

Call Center Sim by nuiguy 2014-12-28T10:32:00

Pretty interesting idea, but what is the benefit of "Ask Boss" if it deducts a point anyway but doesn't tell you the right answer?

Still I think that the idea has potential to turn into a game with Papers, Please-ish complexity :)

FatCat by DevoNoel 2014-12-10T10:40:00

That's quite addicting and suspenseful :)
Suggestion for the future: have the environment affect your stealth.

Super Start World by calavera 2014-12-29T23:38:00

How could you find time to create an AAA game in 2 days when Ubisoft requires several years and thousands of people for the same job? I could spend the next couple of weeks on this.

Office Gaming Inception by AMS 2014-12-16T20:07:00

Amazing, it's incredible how hard a simple game can be with gimped controls and at the same time having to deal with all the other stuff thrown at you :)

For those who find this game too easy: play it while you're at work! :D

RGB Shooter by MMOOxy 2014-12-09T15:48:00

Aw that was so hard! :D
Cool idea, it's not only an entire game on one screen, it's three games at the same time! Cool interpretation of the theme.

THE AXE GAMES by Team BluCookie 2014-12-10T12:26:00

Haha pretty fun interpretation of the theme, and the graphics are amazing. My only complaint is that the obstacles take far too long to disappear, so I often misjudged the right moment to move between lanes.

GraviFlip by oh_andrej 2014-12-08T22:33:00

That was fun :)
There doesn't seem to be much substance to it, but for a quick time waster and high score hunt it's really cool. I loved trying for the combos, getting high ones felt really satisfying ^^

Door 37 by Phaax 2014-12-08T22:58:00

Pretty neat idea! It was totally confusing at first but over time I figured it out and eventually made it to the ending screen. Good use of the theme!

How To Win a Jam by adrianulima 2014-12-08T22:50:00

Haha, so that's how you do it. A bit barebones, would have been more fun with powerups of some sorts, but still, it was fun as it is too. It felt SOOO satisfying to get lots of kills with one dynamite, so if that's what you were going for, well done!

One New Message From Sam by jepster 2014-12-16T19:33:00

Hmm, I can't play the game because it tells me "bad file length" after it loaded (web version).

Alice:nightmare by Sublustris 2014-12-11T09:46:00

Very interesting mechanic. Graphics are really great, love that effect you used. Game overall is a bit confusing. Does anything happen after you collected enough keys?

GameJam Tychoon by davesoft 2014-12-12T22:10:00

Interesting game, but it's also very confusing. I guess you need to play a couple times to get it right (just like the real Ludum Dare haha)

Get Bigger! by admix 2014-12-09T16:19:00

I love the attention to detail in this. It looks really good and is fun to play, but I just couldn't clear the entire area :(

Kenny's Adventures by revolter 2014-12-09T07:47:00

That was pretty cool :)
The game told me I found only 3 gems out of 4 but where is the fourth? :o

I liked the telekinesis ability. Really good job on making good puzzles with it, maybe you expand on this in the future :)

Kenny's Adventures by revolter 2014-12-09T12:03:00

Thanks for your help in my game's comments :D Found all four gems now. Well hidden, and because of the sparkle it's fair. Feels good :)

The Lonely Realm of Tom Thaum, the Space Wizard by JJEvil 2014-12-08T18:23:00

That was pretty cool! Unfortunately I wasn't able to build the tower all the way up, but it was cool while it lasted :)

-CHAMBER- by ben_pxlplz 2014-12-28T12:32:00

That was cool, but the difficulty is quite high :) would be cool if the blocks fell slower in the beginning so you can get used to it.
I can see a lot of potential in this, giving the character additional powers to manipulate blocks or protection etc.

Remote Control by Louisload 2014-12-28T10:41:00

Pretty cool idea, but it's easy to win the game by just switching to the snowman channel right at the start after jumping, so you don't have to get the key and unlock the door ^-^

A Carrot Game by the-arrival 2014-12-16T20:18:00

Pretty cool entry. I liked this mix of farming simulator and shoot'em up :)
It gets really intense so the upgrades are very welcome.

Ragtown by indie4fun 2014-12-29T23:30:00

That was really cool! I couldn't pass all the years but if I get time I'll try it again. It was really exciting to fear for my life while having to make these hard decisions.
I wonder if you can expand this into a larger commercial game similar in scope to Papers, Please.

Rigmarole by team_popup 2014-12-09T20:56:00

That looks so gorgeous! I wish you'd have had time to pull of your full idea. I'd love to play a full game in this style.

One Act by Sheepolution 2014-12-12T21:56:00

Brilliant! This game is as good as the good critiques in the newspapers :) So funny, too. I loved it when the review told me how the game works by breaking the 4th wall. Good luck with the ratings!

HackTheSpaceCafe by Jed T. 2014-12-08T22:18:00

Very confusing. I didn't really know what I was supposed to do and clicking on things often didn't seem like it affected anything :o

Snowma'am by udo 2014-12-10T21:47:00

You say in your blog post that it's not fun and a failure but I think it's not a failure, and the fun is hiding in it as well. It has some flaws that hurt the experience (like the really slow speed) but the underlying idea is good and at worst it's just an unfinished game.

I'm sure with a clear head and some extra time it could have been closer to your vision :)

Snowma'am by udo 2014-12-11T08:55:00

@udo: yes, your advice in your blog post is very useful, I'm definitely going to remember those points for future Ludum Dares!

To Fight The Sea by BretHudson 2014-12-16T21:18:00

Very cool graphics, and the music adds to the under-the-sea mood. The controls are a bit awkward and I'd wish for better audio-visual feedback when I hit enemies, but for the short amount of time, well done. There's potential in expanding this!

LD34 — Two Button Controls / Growing

Tamamystery by Jezzamon 2015-12-30T11:29:00

Really amazing! A detective game with only two buttons!

Milgram by Kortuga 2015-12-14T16:04:00

That was quite an experience!
Found all three endings, great voice acting :D

Left-leaning by tayl1r 2015-12-18T16:14:00

Oh god, best game! I love how you wasted the second button on tooting a useless horn :D

Tama Battle! by midgard 2015-12-14T16:19:00

Cute simple battling game, but it gets stale really fast. Probably because you can't really do anything about fights other than balance your stats beforehand and then hope you're lucky.
Does the sleeping have any negative effect? There doesn't seem to be a risk/reward system with using rest or not before a battle, so I always just rest.

trosor by Ditto 2015-12-16T14:55:00

Pretty cool! Neat graphical effect, everything looks so soft and squishy. Didn't expect it to play that well with only two buttons, but it does! :)

The Daring Entrepreneur by zedutchgandalf 2015-12-16T14:25:00

It's a clicker game that fits the theme, doesn't really seem to require much input from the player though other than clicking every once in a while to max out the customers.

Space Research Team by pinion 2015-12-30T10:04:00

Very cool entry, unfortunately didn't have anyone to co-op with, but I got the idea, and I can only imagine how much harder (but also more hilarious) it would have been with a second player :)

Swarm Hunter by HuvaaKoodia 2015-12-30T10:14:00

I couldn't really figure out how to play :(
Maybe it's a bit too complex for a 48-hour jam?

When I Grow Up I Want to be by Lancelot Gao 2015-12-15T09:32:00

The game looks really good, but the auto-scrolling is so slow :(

Plantagone by Gins 2015-12-14T10:19:00

@candlesan: thank you, I made it this way on purpose, so you wouldn't lose your grip on the hooks just because you missed your aim while you're already swinging.

@jerry111zhang: thank you, the hopping is frustrating on purpose, so that you would always choose swinging over it. I should have placed more hooks into the levels though, so you actually do get this choice more often^^

@TaoPhoenix: thank you, I didn't have the time or the testers to thoroughly test the difficulty curve, but I will keep this in mind if I decide to work more on this game.

@justinooncx: thank you, it's nice to see that you appreciate the design decisions that make the game more forgiving.

Overall, I find it interesting that some players seem to find the game too punishing and others quite forgiving. I would be really curious to watch both kinds of players play to see what I can change about the design to fix this.

Plantagone by Gins 2015-12-16T19:04:00

@jamaster96: what do you find confusing? Maybe I can help.

@Crashmore Studios: thank you, I already addressed the frustrating parts of hopping earlier, as for the pat on the back, I will follow that advice ;)

@everyone else: thank you, the positive feedback is much appreciated!

Plantagone by Gins 2015-12-17T11:45:00

@kuhnerdm: thank you, yes the hop stride is really tedious. If I had the option to use more buttons, at least I might make it so that there is a dedicated shooting button, so you don't need to tap the directions to hop, but just hold it down.

@paruthidotexe: thanks! glad you figured out how it works, I hoped that the two-sentence tutorial is enough, but for a more refined version, I'd have to make all this more clear. I should probably add more detail about the controls into the description.
As for the controls: I was considering how the game would benefit from more flexible controls when swinging, but I couldn't come up with anything that works with only two buttons. Perhaps with using the mouse too, but I wanted to limit myself to really only two buttons, and nothing else.
As for the mobile suggestion: this is indeed something I'm considering, since the control scheme already works on mobile devices really well! Depending on the free time I have, I might actually further develop this and put it on the android store (and perhaps iPhones if I find someone who can compile it for me).

Plantagone by Gins 2015-12-18T08:37:00

@Evannex: does R really restart the whole game? Sorry, it's supposed to only reset a level. My bad, will fix.

Garden Grow by justinooncx 2015-12-14T10:34:00

Loved it, quite a meditative experience with that soothing music!

The Super Bros (that are not Brothers!) by Xinelu 2015-12-16T14:03:00

It's really tough to control, since you can not jump and move at the same time and the brothers push each other off the edges :(
Nice idea though, wish I could say more but after several tries I couldn't get past the first level :(

Panball by gillenew 2015-12-16T14:12:00

Very fun pinball game! The second stage is ridiculously hard though :( Couldn't beat it. Also, it's very frustrating that left-click = restart the entire game :((

Christmas Eve Late Delivery Service by ajopart 2015-12-17T13:33:00

Awesome sound effects :)
The controls for the baggage drop-off feel a bit unresponsive and sometimes it didn't register double taps properly, but it's a fun high score hunt game :)

Z4KM4STER - Zookeeper DJ by candlesan 2015-12-14T10:27:00

Wow that was really fun! I love the idea of making this classic game into a rhythm game. Also I guess now I know where the protagonist of my game went after it ended^^

The Flower by Sublustris 2015-12-15T18:55:00

Cool idea, but it would be more fun if the level got harder every time. Amazing graphics!

Digicross by 5you 2015-12-16T20:04:00

That's a pretty cool idea, but I think it's hindered by the two button controls a lot. I constantly wanted to control it like "snake". If you expand on this in the future, just make 4-directional controls :)

Battle Rose by goodbadokay 2015-12-16T18:58:00

Cool idea, great graphics and music :) Sometimes it feels like my attacks are missing even if they should hit, or if the hit is really delayed :o

Potatiana Jones by Ildfuglen 2015-12-15T19:25:00

This one is really cool! Replacing jumping with growing vines on specific walls is really a cool mechanic. I didn't complete it but I'll come back to it, probably :)

BEAR by graceavery 2015-12-16T19:09:00

Aww very cute :)

BEAR by graceavery 2015-12-16T19:11:00

Oops, I hit the submit button by accident ;_;
Continuation of above comment: very simple game, but it has charm :) Loved all the puns and the cute bear hug in the end was really heart warming \('o')/

Just a fatty cat by logon13 2015-12-17T17:20:00

The controls remind me of the Star Wars Podracing arcade game. Good idea to use this in this theme!

Sushi Roll by adsilcott 2015-12-16T20:23:00

I liked it, and nice graphics. Is it on purpose that rapidly alternating between grow and shrink makes you accelerate?

Not sure if I understand what exactly I have to do :o

Fun variant of the water blowing game everyone had as a kid :)
The guitar music is really calming, love it.

YinYang by paruthidotexe 2015-12-30T10:07:00

The concept is nice, but it seems you didn't have much time to develop the idea, since it's just black and white alternating forever without any elements to spice it up. :(

I really liked this one. Charming presentation, simple and well executed gameplay :)

Little Big Dash by Evannex 2015-12-14T16:32:00

I like the idea behind this, and it's fun as long as I last. However it seems to be impossible to react fast enough with the whole growing/shrinking before crucial jumps or low ceilings.

Or maybe I'm just not very good at it ;)

Two Buttons Left by jerry111zhang 2015-12-14T15:26:00

I liked it. I'm not sure if I reached the correct ending, but I may come back :)

The "web" link links right back to ludumdare.com?

Elenesski's Two Bar by Elenesski 2015-12-14T15:38:00

Interesting idea. It just seems that in the first couple of levels you can rely alone on your vision, and when the fakes come in you can rely alone on the rhythm (didn't get beyond that though, so maybe you'll have to combine both later?)

Hello Darkness by jcmonkey 2015-12-14T15:44:00

Nice game with cool music, it just feels like either the movement is too slow, or the levels too big.

ANTI-THUNDER by jamaster96 2015-12-16T19:55:00

I don't think I understood what was going on, but maybe it's more fun when you have friends to play with you :(

Nice single player agar.io clone :)
Definitely works in this context!

All Ways Down by noddingTortoise 2016-01-04T10:38:00

Really well done! Would also work great on a phone/tablet :)

U.G.O by aamatniekss 2015-12-16T20:10:00

Very simple but well executed idea. The graphics are amazing for spending only 2 days on them :o
The game's a bit unforgiving though, having to restart the entire game instead of just the level you're on. Made me quit despite wanting to see more levels :(

Conservation of Ninjutsu by kuhnerdm 2015-12-17T11:51:00

Simple but cool game. It was a bit boring at first, but when the dudes with multiple commands came in and the speed increased, it got really intense! The music is really catchy too. It's also quite an exercise for the fingers to have to alternate between up/down and left/right, so it's definitely a different experience to just pressing a single button. Well done!

Venus and the Flies by fractalbear 2015-12-17T13:39:00

Great animation! Feels really good to chomp these pesky flies :3

Blue & Red by zaniarm 2015-12-14T15:29:00

Cool little minigame. Bet it would be fun challenging friends for high scores!

Roll-Ball by mukult 2015-12-14T15:48:00

Really awesome "growing" effect :)
It's a simple idea, but executed very well.

Laser Jump FTW by Crashmore Studios 2015-12-14T17:18:00

That was quite frantic, love the idea of shooting and movement being tied to the same mechanic. It's a bit easy to fool the game though, since all the enemies swarm towards you. You can just hover close to the ceiling and fire down in regular intervals ^^

Showing the tutorial right after you died the first time was really funny. More games should do that^^

Growing Beat by David Cookie 2015-12-16T18:54:00

Cool little rhythm game :) Catchy tune, too :3
