Beware of the....oh no!...they got me...auuuurghhh...
I liked the game. I think it'd be great if the fish had a little bit of momentum to it. I think it would add to the feel of the game if the fish didn't stop on a dime. I think that if there was a power up to temporarily increase the range of the light, that would be nice too. It's great how everything goes red when you cross the red fish...
As far as music, I think slow, layered, arpeggiated themes with ascending and descending musical motifs go great for underwater music...just an idea if you were trying to figure out some good music choices. Reference "Aquarium" in Camille Saint-Saens work "The Carnival of the Animals"
I like the idea...very neat...treasure hunting while limited by how much air you have. It definitely adds to the dynamic when your greediness overcomes your will to live. I think you should definitely add the coral maze.
That was really neat. I never in a million years considered doing a game with a PDF file!
This game was so simple to learn and so hard to master....I enjoyed it immensely.
Yea, that's simply because it's a new file to the internet; therefore, not too many people have downloaded it and Chrome will try to warn you of that fact (not that it may have actually checked it for viruses). I encourage you to scan it with a real virus checker to confirm that it is safe.
Thanks for the comments folks. These are all pretty much issues I have on my "Things I wish I'd figured out before I started" list! Hehe. It's mildy distracting to have to figure out how to make sure you don't get stuck in corners in the middle of a 48 hour contest! For example, it's missing the bats and random earthquakes and a better maze for the levels.
Super duper! It sucked me in...
I had fun. It was a very nice upbeat game.
I always wanted to play a Quaker--he's the LIFE of the party! Fun game. I enjoyed the increasing complexity of the maps. Sometimes the collision detection doesn't work and as a result the game is too easy to beat. But it's nice and easy for those not wanting to get pummeled to death in the first minute. Nice job!
This was fun. I like pirates. The way the glowing coins disappeared after collecting them reminded me of the game Descent where blowing out the lights made the whole level dark. I enjoyed the monkey enemies though they got a little repetitious after a while. Altogether, this feels like a AAA game compared to many LD games--no wonder you all were tired.
Nice game--very polished. I was hoping maybe the music would be in. Game is very tough, but I kept wanting to get better. Good job!
It has lots of potential for the future. I liked the gameplay. I probably should have played with a mouse, as i was clicking a lot on my trackpad. But, I had fun and I liked the variety in how the enemy units would decide to mine for gold, attack, and so on. They don't really do anything to defend their base, so it was pretty easy to just build units for that purpose.
Nice job! I've been wanting to play a game like this for a while! Awesome. I enjoyed the maze and there were plenty of dangerous things in there. Those traps are really sensitive. I liked the balance of choosing whether to use the fireball or smacking enemies with the wand. Plus, I like how you incorporated opportunities to navigate around enemies!
I went for over 6 minutes, circling the mounds of exploding pigs, collecting all their money, it was a very effective strategy. At the end i decided to join and go out in a blaze of glory. Fun concept.
Groovy dance moves! I like the Pilotwings-ish landing at the beginning and the fun dance moves at the end.
Wow...that was a cliffhanger. I like the social commentary of Auto-saves. In the end, I skipped the log files and tried to ... ERR--ARR-BLEEP ... and after that I GORF-C64-VIC-20-DFSDFSDFASDF ... and then I was able to start the game and play! I think my life was currency playing!!!
I tried copying/pasting from the log file, then I opened the .EXE with a text editor and tried copying/pasting different strings as passwords, then I tried several times guessing passwords, then I tried running a certain string from the .EXE. Didn’t look at the source. If this is too spoiling, I’ll rewrite this comment if you’d like...
The jumping mechanic was mysterious at first, but then I figured out it was based on distance (almost like a slingshot). I had fun working my way to the top. Sometimes the game would end unexpectedly. The music and sound effects fit the game and added mood. Nice job!
Nice game. You already mentioned the issues. Does not work very well with a trackpad, but a mouse was just fine. I enjoyed the challenge, I think as the game gets harder, resetting everything to zero can be too much of a punishment. But, great concept overall!
Thank you @fatcrow and @sillyman987 for the comments. I squashed those bugs. Thanks for the feedback!
I agree with you @datagreed. I would like to have put the buttons over the canvas and have them fill up left to right. I simply ran out of time. Thank you for the nice feedback!
@zondarg I like that. Capitalist Virtual Pet Game. @attala I've never made a game where clicking was so prominent (If you close your eyes, I bet you can imagine an RTS) @synedraacus Yea for not using Unity...I like making my own game engines, so why not! @aurel Perhaps in future attempts, I'll do the CSS necessary to have them act like gauges. @kuro I'm happy it made you happy! @limbo If you close your eyes, maybe its really a modern RTS! (j/k) Thank you all for the nice feedback! And yes, next time I'll try to not have so much clicking (although it works okay for tablets)
@gonutz Aliasing appears to be one of the artifacts of the easiest fur rendering algorithms--it's so ugly, but for me oddly entertaining. Did you let the fur grow out, or was it constantly groomed? Secondly, the challenge to me of a compo game is to try and allow the full game experience in as little time as possible...so the game is more enjoyable at the Slow speed. I was hoping to allow a closer to a Tamagotchi life experience (about a week) for five to ten years of life, but that seemed ridiculous without requiring some kind of server implementation which was not in my time budget. The main idea is to maintain the health, water, brush and clean levels so the rabbits' fur will grow faster and for it to live longer. Thanks for playing!
@gonutz Brushing helps improve the quality of the fur. Underneath the hood, I'm multiplying cleaned vs brushed. The idea is that the wool would have knots or dirt in it and that is not quality. So basically, if you never brush it, it will get knots and you'd have to throw it away, hence usable fur will grow very slowly. Likewise, if you never clean it, you'd have to throw it away, so the fur also grows slowly. In game reality, click-click-click-click-click.
@rjhelms Like a Katamari ball, the simulation options kept sticking and sticking...until at last the final hour came, and I’m like it’s done, but what have I created? For a first virtual pet game, I learned that the hardest part is to be able to balance how fast the game runs versus the number of simultaneous actions needed. In the future, I might use more sinusoidal and gradual difficulty to help balance the game. Thank you for your review comments, I value your opinion (and all opinions left so far).
That was really cool, and really hard. I think I got 7th place at one time, but that was really lucky. In the future, it'd be nice to randomly place the words, but not so your only choice is to jump into a saw or the lake of fire. Great feeling otherwise. Good job!
Fun entry. I was drawn to it because of 2.5D. I enjoyed the graphics. Good job!
This was fun. I liked the mood with the mob controlling your store (darn racketeers!). I made it to the end, but sometimes it felt like the game didn't register a key press. Folks already mentioned the repetition in the words. This is okay sometimes, but not all the time. Have you thought about scrambling an array rather than picking random words? Great execution though.
Fun game. It was hard to click and get those emails out! I guess email does suck the life out of you though! Great job with the theme and it captured the experience of modern life. LOL!
Nice job. I enjoyed the art and music especially. I liked the simple mechanic used in the game which made it easy to learn. I think there was a nice balance of wanting to keep trying versus being too hard.
Challenging game. The story was nice. I wish the buttons were in the same screen position on the HTML game so I could click through and get started after watching the story the first time. I like the pixel art, nice colors. The music was enjoyable too, and fit the mood of the game.
I enjoyed the story--it totally had me hooked. The story almost had a echo of the thneeds in Dr Seuss' The Lorax. I'm glad I did the right thing in the end. I noticed that you could theoretically buy as many stilts as you want without any negative effect.
Aye. Yea, At first I did the right thing first (why waste life on stilts right?). Then, I played through to the end and then tried again up to 10 hats. Last night, my wife and I were wondering what would happen to the kids after she was buried, and the ending explained everything.
I enjoyed this entry. This was a nice social commentary on Facebook. I liked the graphics and it went fine with the music. One of the most polished LD games I've seen this go around. Great job!
I starved to death! I found some bandages, then I gave a priest some food, he gave me advice on a shortcut, then I tried to ford a river which soaked my medical supplies, and then I starved. Then 4 miles to go and I bled to death, because I had bandaged a soldier along the way. This game was cool. I really enjoyed it. Great job!
This was fun herding cats around with a laser pointer to solve maze puzzles. I think it is easy to learn, sometimes hard to control as the cats have free reign, so sometimes they slip away from their intended spots. Great effort in 48 hours.
Nice experience! I enjoyed the art and sound especially. I like the soft lighting effects as well.
A game about money that dodges money to live. This is a fun idea. I think the collision detection does not work, but I was working on a strategy that involves moving my dollar bill around in circles, sometimes clockwise and sometimes counterclockwise. I really like how the big coins and small coins make it asymmetric and you have to really think about what you are doing. I had fun.
I enjoyed the game, i didn't care as much for the control system, but I understand it. I was hoping for audio as it would really enhance the game. The animations and graphics were great! I really liked the game, great job!
Not bad for a weekend. I really enjoyed this game. The cat reminded me a bit of Pusheen. I liked the puzzles, tough, but fun. The music really tied everything together, although sometimes the volume was going in and out, perhaps tied to a game mechanic or something.
Great design. I really like the mood of this game. Excellent. I liked the interplay of different abilities.
I won! Ok, I think this game is a good start. The collision issues have already been mentioned. Those are tough to get right at the last minute. I really like where the game was headed.
I like the direction of this game. It was fun. It was annoying to have to type in the whole code again and I would really have loved if there was a subroutine mode. This game kinda reminded me of Robot turtles. cool!
Thanks @ogre. The key to the game is to use the WASD to move around. Space toggles between ENDO (inside) and EXO modes. You have to gather the white "creation stars" orbiting/spawned around the yellow stars in ENDO mode. Then you switch back to EXO mode to place the new star on the grid using the ENTER key. The circle is green if you can place a star, red otherwise. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the feedback @hermitao, @thesnide, @ogre, @nachtwitch, and @rillep! I fixed the bugs that were causing some of the playability issues. And added a context sensitive help feature that explains what you should be doing.
I struggled with this game. It was interesting to play, but I always felt that there was lag with my mouse...but I only have a trackpad & a bluetooth mouse at the moment. I may have to give this a go a little later with a wired mouse.
Got sucked into playing this game. I was struggling at first before I realized that sea stars help you. The game was fun and the proof was the amount of time I kept playing. The only downside is that after a while the music gets a little tiring. But great job.
Fun concept. I rolled Seasonal Holiday + Portrait Orientation. I did the art in Pyxel Edit using a custom palette. christmas-scene.png
This was very cool. I liked how out of control everything could get. And the movement from piece to piece was fun. Sometimes, it felt that I was in control of too much at one time, but that adds to the chaos. Nicely done!
This game reinvents the snake game for me. It reminded me a little of Flow. I love the ASCII graphics and the sound really made the game fun and humorous. Great job!
I beat it! That was a fun play of physics in space! Great job! My family loved this game as well!
It gets scary after dark when the creatures come after you. I think this is impressive how much you were able to do in the 48 hours. I think it would be neat to continue this idea and polish up some of the mechanics. Sometimes the gameplay felt sluggish and there were crashes. Overall, I had fun.
Fun concept. I like the idea of typing to shoot the weapon. I felt it would have been nice to type a word in with letters in the gun in order to get the gun to fire, rather than try to collect them in the right order.
The game was interesting to play. The music had this mellotron-ish feel to it which I enjoyed. I enjoyed the art style but sometimes it was difficult to tell which planet was which. I did not like that I had to install the program (version 7) to run it, perhaps that is something that can be fixed in a future release.
Great job, very polished hack n slash that reminded me of Flow, but with fighting. Graphics style is kind similar to mine. I also crashed when I got to the third boss on the HTML version.
Game is hard and great work for the amount of time you spent. Sound would really have made this game more fun. I thought it was good that you had to get your weapon charged before you could shoot.
That was so much fun! This is the first emulator game I've downloaded. I made it through two at a time, but three at a time was ridiculous! Great job!
I thought this game was very interesting. I really enjoyed the text game experience. You really pulled that one off. Great job!
This was a super cool game. One of my faves for this event for sure. I really liked how the suspense was driven by the music and suspenseful use of pauses. Excellent!
Nice job capturing the Little Shop of Horrors Vibe. My favorite is the 1960 Roger Corman film. I liked the animations which is well done for being done in 48hrs. Fun times!
This game was pretty awesome. Definitely one of my favorites this year. Great job. I really liked the music and the aesthetics. I thought it was funny when I overfed it.
@wubbaduck If you could let me know what browser you are using, that would be helpful. Please try it again as I have changed from using an OffscreenCanvas to a `document.createElement('canvas')` instead which should be more cross browser friendly.
Oh no! @daveroony, have you tried a Chrome or Chromium based browser. It works best with those ones. It should also work with Firefox, but there are some graphics glitches. You may also just need to wait for the graphics to load. If you click "log", that might clue you in to whether it succeeded or not.
Sorry @cirno. The game uses WebGL 2.0 and works with Chrome. The slowdowns that are most likely to be common include downloading the assets. ~1-2 fps in chrome might indicate that you do not have hardware acceleration turned on in your browser. BTW, I remember playing your game from the last compo--it was one of my favorites.
@reheated Thank you for the detailed review. The air gauge bug is due to using a regular “canvas” versus an OffscreenCanvas in HTML5–Chromium/Chrome doesn’t seem to have this issue. Your other points are well taken and I ran out of time before I could put those in—like the flowers growing. Appreciate the constructive feedback!
Very nice puzzle game. I appreciate that there's music and sound effects. Very fun. I saw the comment above about thumbnails--very important.
Wow! Fun and super cool. This is one of my faves this LD. I really liked the puzzle element and the cool wavy text effects. I hope to make games this cool some day.
I really like the interface. The tribute to John Conway is very nice. Good job!
I won! That was a tough game. I almost gave up in the middle, but I persevered. My trick is to press SPACE before moving. Well done. This is one of my faves of LD46.
Fun overall. Collisions didn't work all the time. I felt that I was guessing most of the time about the gates, but I really appreciate that this could be fun in learning them. I really enjoyed that there was a tutorial. The music and sound effects really helped this game feel fun.
Three (er, 4?) games in one weekend. Some of the puzzles were simple. My favorite was the aiming game. The letter game was mentally challenging. I thought the little teddy bear was awesome!
Great job! I really enjoyed this. The action felt snappy. On occasion, I was able to fall out of the world when I hit the first water drop. I like that the flame has some weight to it--lots of platformers made in Unity feel floaty. I also really liked the tutorial as part of your game mechanic at the beginning.
Very interesting genre of game. I've never played a game like that before. I think it was pretty well done. I had fun.
This has a really awesome mood and great bluesy music. I think a sound effect would help when you get hit. I had fun playing this game.
Great game! I really enjoyed the simple graphics and I liked the cellular automata-ishness of this title. The game play is nice and simple and reminds me of little classic games like Tamagotchi.
Nice game! The space invaders twist (literally) was really cool. I second the comment above about it being difficult to focus on all three colors at once. Perhaps you could ramp it up so that you only have two colors on one screen at a time and maybe have later levels with more colors simultaneously.
I second the autofire comments above. This was fun to play and I liked the swarms of enemies. Although a few get stuck, they felt smart -- I'm guessing some kind of A*. I think a soundtrack and few more sound effects could help the mood a bit. I might also stage the enemies so that the game has a ramp up in difficulty.
This reminded me of Playstation games like FFVII with the perspective. The lighting and image effects were very well done. The mood was amazing. I would probably add some sound effects so you know whether you were successful in picking up coal.
Nicely done game. Character is difficult to control, but I suspect it's part of this particular genre. I was getting good figuring out safe places to jump from. Music really helped set the mood.
I think it's always hard to make a 3D game in a two day period, so I applaud the effort getting this to work. I really enjoyed playing as a cube and the colors were nice. I think if I were to improve this game, I would make the sword swing faster, and add some sound effects when you hit objects. Sometimes there is a bug where you get stuck on top of one of the "bad" cubes.
Wow, that was crazy...a good example of what can happen with distracted driving! Fun.
That was fantastic. I would have loved some sounds and music. But the way you combined the two games felt very natural. Great job!
I really like the blend of paint and fighter. Although the movement/shooting didn't 100% feel perfect, the idea of this game is really fun! Great job!
That was pretty cool. I thought it was innovative to use your webcam for training a neural net.
Wow, that was fantastic. I really enjoyed that you implemented all those different games inside your game. I thought the graphics looked nice, but could use a little improvement in a few areas. For example, the black clicker was almost impossible to find. It would be nice to have some kind of glowing aura to the characters you have not yet moved. And it would be nice if you didn't have to click wait if that's the only choice you have to make. Great entry!
That was a very well done game. It was quite shocking when McBeef communicated with the rabbits! Was there a way for him to not blast away all the rabbits? Anyway, the story was very engaging and most importantly as a player you connect with them. Bravo!
Wow, this was fantastic. I loved the text aesthetic. The short beep sounds were great. This will probably end up being on my top ten games of LD41.
Fun playing and avoiding the cats. It was neat how you combined the two genres. Sometimes the car movement felt unsmooth, but perhaps you fixed that in the postjam version. Great effort in 48 hours. I really like the boxy aesthetic.
There was another game using the sliding puzzle, but yours looks great and really integrates nicely with the dungeon crawler genre. Great job!
@justinooncx Speed Phoning. You have to simultaneously solve a 3 puzzle and race! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/speed-phoning
This was quite a bit of fun. I loved the sound effects (were those popping balloons?) I normally don't play clicker games, but this example was compelling. Great job. It reminded me a little bit like xbill.
@heyycap Foraging definitely is a strategy, especially near the end when you're hoping to just make it.
@Evan-Minto I appreciate your feedback. Running out of money does limit what you can do. As I created the little chance occurrences, it made me want to incorporate those into the mechanic somehow. It's not intentional about the character moving too slow. Initially I had the enemies moving much slower for development purposes, and then sped them up to add difficulty--in the future, I am going to work on making that mechanic feel better.
@sophie Great job! you did. I am glad you enjoyed the game.
@ananace So there is a chance to get more missiles to fire, but I think the probability is a bit too low right now. I should probably adjust that so it's more likely to occur. Thanks for the helpful comments. Cheers!
@mAnimal Thanks for the feedback. It sure is hard to balance a text game in 48 hours to be sure. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@patvanmackelberg I'm very glad that you enjoyed my game. Thank you!
@Triastase I'm glad you like it. I'm going to have to look into the getting stuck part. Cheers!
@egawag Thanks for the compliment!
@candlesan I'm glad you enjoyed the game. I had lots of fun making it.
@hexagore Great, I hope it was edge of the seat at the end!
@Wyatt Those poor camels indeed. I hope it was amusing to watch them wither away.
@BauBau I'm glad using missiles was therapeutic.
@Zinkler I've got to work on that improbable event. I'm selecting scenarios with a RNG, but I should use a scrambled list and step through there so that there is few repeats.
@justinooncx So medicine works by healing your health 2 points at a time while you are under 10. As I was developing/play testing the game, many of the scenarios I invented seemed like they would be good elements to incorporate.
@BluShine Thank you for your feedback! I think Oregon Trail incorporated a mini game where you could go hunting for food, though I think not quite as intense as a normal shooter. I'm glad all the little bits of detail added to the experience.
@notpresident35 You're right, I should probably add fresh Himalayan spring water to rejuvenate Marco Polo from time to time. The sprite packing was a side effect of rendering sprites from an image to a HTML5 canvas. I made the graphics engine from scratch and attempted to fix the blitting, but then the alpha was getting all messed up. I will improve upon that in the future.
Thank you all for your feedback. You guys are great! I'm going to take a look at your games.
@p-r Thank you for the feedback. I might be able to add SPACE in the future...depends how much time I have.
@Von Vista As a developer, I feel like you have to play your game to completion just to make sure it's actually beatable. Yea, it's tough. Thanks for your feedback!
@kr4ft3r Thank you very much for the feedback. I hoped very much that different strategies would be possible for players, rather than just one dynamic.
@csanyk Thank you for your feedback. Those unfortunate accidents!
These games are tough for me, especially with a laptop keyboard where the arrow keys are so cramped. Maybe offer some keyboard keys as well? I enjoyed the metal music...goes with the racecar idea!
I enjoyed this text adventure / sim city game. It has a lot of depth and I could see someone spending a lot of time. I know that time is short for development, but perhaps having auto-complete so that making typing errors doesn't affect the flow of the game. But, I really enjoyed this. This is one of the best text games this LD41. Great job!
That was interesting. I liked how there was four mechanics and you had to switch between them. I liked how Shiojiri could jump on the buildings and trees and stuff. Fun!
The game looks amazing. It just needs sound and audio. There were a few things that could make it better. Checkpoints so that you don't have to rerun the entire level. The keyboard controls felt a little laggy so that you couldn't really execute timed jumps very well. And there's a weird bug that sometimes your character falls through the ground at the start position (it might be tied to having the right arrow key held when you die and then respawn).
Very cool merge of rock-paper-scissors, memory, and fighting games. I had fun playing your game. Great job!
Wow, that was ridiculous. Very fun! This game felt very big and you could get lost playing it for a while. Good job!
This was pretty cool. I had some trouble with some of the jumps. But lots of fun.
That was hilarious! I loved this game. Great job. The art was fantastic.
Wow, that was a very well done game. I enjoyed the gray/black color scheme. The bass guitar was fantastic...there's not too many LD41 games with great bass. Great job...I really enjoyed the turn based mechanic.
This was lots of fun. I really enjoyed the music. Discovering the brighter color blocks represented height, I really liked that. Great job! Sometimes the enemies get stuck making them easy pickings. But that was in the jam version.
The audio soundtrack was amusing and memorable. I would have preferred a calendar to the poster. The time waiting for the car to refuel was too long. It was easier to reload the game. Anyways, those aside I thought it was a very pleasant game to play and you should definitely keep at it. Good job!
I had fun playing this game. I liked the different categories of questions. Sometimes the car driving mechanic felt a little weird, but I was able to pick up diamonds. I like the sound effects.
This is a great idea, but it's too difficult. Sometimes your golf-bomb goes underneath the ground and doesn't blow up the enemy. And the wind affects the ball too much when you first start the game.
I want to praise your effort for your first entry. I hope you had a blast. Even though it was short, the levels were nicely done and most importantly the game was fun. I enjoyed the graphics.
Great game. I really enjoyed the story and being able to choose a path that didn't require (as much) bloodshed.
Interesting twist on Tetris and an RPG. I had fun trying to get to the top, and I enjoyed the humorous messages. They made me laugh. There's a few rough spots--it feels just a little bit slow. It would be nice to just click anywhere to dismiss the message. Overall, very enjoyable.
Fun game--very innovative and had a great feeling to play. It would be nice if you could repeat your actions. For example, if you do the wall jump level and you mess it up, it seemed like you had to throw yourself over the cliff to reset the level instead of being able to type in the commands and try again.
The concept was pretty nice. Sometimes, the controls played with your mind and it was easy to get stuck. But, I thought the game overall was fun to play.
I had fun playing this poker game. I liked how you could pick your own combinations. And it was nice that you had to prioritize which hands you would have to play.
I had to slow down initially. For some reason on my laptop, the game would go very slow and then increase in speed. Anyways, this is the first LD game that used SDF and JKL. I actually liked that I could use both hands and that it wasn't tied to the arrow keys.
That was fun. It's too bad the shooter part isn't really affected by the rhythm part. It was really hard to focus on the red and blue parts simultaneously. But the game is nice and polished. Music was really cool!
Oh my!!! That was fantastic. When I squashed someone with the house, I gasped! Bravo, well done sir.
Great job on the art and sound. This was very smooth. I didn't have any issues playing it. Great job!
Interesting concept. It would be helpful to explain that the last direction you head is the direction you fire. It's easy to be overwhelmed by enemies and have no way to win/lose rather than just dying. I was really hoping the dancing was going to be a bigger part of the mechanic.
Very nice game. I enjoyed the graphics, sound, and music...very well balanced. In the future, arrow keys would be nice.
Interesting concept. The game doesn't seem to follow the described mechanics. You keep shooting them and they stop. If you walk over them, sometimes they disappear, sometimes they don't. I really enjoyed the music. It had an M. Ward feel.
I tried it again. And this makes a lot more sense. I did notice that if you shoot the red guy and the green guy at the beginning of the game, and then step only on the green piece that the red piece never goes away. Also, if you leave the red guy alone, then you have one remaining piece that never seems to come. Is that intended? I upped my rating a slight bit now to account for my user error. 😀
Neat idea. I thought the graphics were outstanding. I thought that art, maybe painting or something, would have something to do with the mechanic. The slash needs a little bug fixing...as a player, it should be tied to time and how long you click/hold/release the mouse. The game looks good enough to keep working on. Good job with your first LD. I hope you continue to do LD in the future.
