LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Street Chess by OddballDave 2018-04-26T09:12:05Z

I beat the final boss https://i.imgur.com/W5wOtHa.png

holy crap this was the most fun I've had playing an LD entry so far

It was really easy to win once I got the hang of it, but still fun

The Matter at Hand by Chaseplays 2018-04-23T18:47:13Z

...I kept getting really annoyed at how cleverly some of the hands were designed to lead you to one solution and only later let you realize it was an incorrect one. I mean, it's clever and I respect it, but I personally would have enjoyed the puzzles more if I could have actually seen all of my cards at once instead of having to fiddle around with them so much.

TextUnkown's AdventureGrounds by HitchH1k3r 2018-04-27T21:27:30Z

That was... something. I looked and the source and felt less bad about quitting after seeing that's just how the game ends, regardless of player action. Welp

Punk at the Opera by rjhelms 2018-04-28T06:17:33Z

Nice! The music is great, and I like your interpretation of the theme. The controls could feel a little wonky at times (even using my xbox controller) but it will still fun to play

Bob Ross Adventure by Goutye 2018-04-23T13:26:11Z

My stats page after the regular levels: https://i.imgur.com/LrAsO52.png I finished the first bonus level, and then kind of noped out when I realized there were more like it...

Clicker Farmer Survival Sim by 5Mixer 2018-04-27T20:36:21Z

I can't play on Windows 7 in either Chrome or Firefox due to lack of support for the (presumably emoji?) characters you used https://i.imgur.com/kfmycKk.png

Astral Fantasy by PowerSpark 2018-04-28T18:38:07Z

I really liked how the game looked and controlled, though I wasn't entirely clear on how leveling up worked, or how I was supposed to ever manage to not get hit by enemies

The gameplay reminded me of an old shareware game called [Critical Mass](http://www.windowsgames.co.uk/critical.html)

Stop 'n Go Racing by DMajor 2018-04-24T14:53:51Z

I think I made one circuit and I stopped playing when my car flipped on its side and I couldn't move anymore.

It's interesting as a proof of concept? But it doesn't seem to have any actual gameplay, just driving on a small linear circuit (with some difficulty)...

Clever name, though

Tales from Avanor by theviraldragon 2018-04-23T12:16:02Z

This is pretty cool! It feels a lot like a turn-based clicker game. It only took me a few minutes to run out of content, though. I would be interested in an expanded post-compo version that adds a little more complexity, and a reason to keep playing after the first 20 or so turns...

I'd also like to suggest trying out my compo entry, [¶City](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/city)! I combined two very similar genres, though came up with something that plays a lot differently.

HardlyCold() by BtheDestroyer 2018-04-27T20:28:11Z

I liked the music, and the art was pretty, but movement was extremely tedious and then I couldn't work out how I was meant to get past the enemy in the second level. At first I was expecting it to only move when I move, which I thought would have been quite sensible game design, and I was dismayed to see that this was not the case. I might have got lucky eventually, but I just wasn't interested in playing any more levels if futilely trying to type directions fast enough to evade enemies was going to be a core part of the experience...

RTHM by fashionbatman 2018-04-26T10:01:10Z

Awesome! This is the best rhythm entry I've played so far

4F - Faith, Forests, Fire and Floods by KayZ 2018-04-23T12:57:19Z

It was satisfying exploring and learning how the different cells interact! It was interesting trying to find ways to use fires and floods to make the land more habitable, without destroying settlements in the process.

Turret Defense Hero by beefsports 2018-04-24T14:49:09Z

I found that the optimal strategy seemed to be always mashing all the turret keys at the same time, since there wasn't any penalty for pressing a key at a wrong time, and it was much easier than changing what keys were being pressed. It was just tedious without being very much fun...

As for lag on enemies dying: Yep me too.

Matching Towers by sky_fighter 2018-04-24T17:47:18Z

Um. I kept clicking around the tiles in the left part of the window, and nothing happened. I died completely ignorant of how to construct towers. Perhaps you could include an explanation of the interface somewhere? Anywhere?

...As I was about to post this I went back to the game for one more attempt, and I managed somehow to gain a tower. I don't even know how or why and I can't reproduce it. This is really irritating.

Dungeon of Amplidi by godsboss 2018-04-27T21:36:17Z

Huh, that was really interesting. It reminded me of a game I played some as a kid, in which you didn't quite build a dungeon but it was revealed in a way that felt similar. It's small, but I like it!

Excessive 2: Excessively Incompatible by moonlightbomber 2018-04-26T09:54:35Z

I appreciated the writing, though as other commenters have pointed out it's smaller in scope than the sort of thing one expects to see as a LD entry (the typical scope of which is already pretty small)

Restructive by aeveis 2018-04-23T18:57:36Z

I really love this! It's not a game as much as a small experience... when I couldn't figure out how to do anything other than destroy and knock around the couple of buildings at the start I, in boredom, went on to destroy everything ahead, and was astonished and pleased to see what was at the end.

ViolenceWar: The Reckoning - An Interactive AAA Adventure by pixelguff 2018-04-27T21:21:21Z

I can't believe I cranked the thing 25 times, clicking on these finicky labels that almost never worked the first time

I don't know what else I expected

sigh

Similize the Savages by silkworm_sweatshop 2018-04-28T06:37:26Z

aaaaaaa damn these guys https://i.imgur.com/UyapFIg.png

That was fun! I liked the sharp humor of shooting cavepeople and destroying their homes in order to _:・゚✧\*・゚✧civilize\*✧:・゚・゚✧_ them. I would've enjoyed a little more in-depth city sim, though from my own city sim entry I know how difficult it is to do that in so short a time...

TRPG Meets GAMES by ccglp 2018-04-24T15:23:55Z

It's cool that there are a bunch of minigames mashed into one whole, but I really think it would have been better to have fewer, more polished minigames. The physics in breakout was baffling, the AI in pong was almost unbeatable, the pacman game gets really hard really fast... I won the pacman game once and the clicker didn't seem to even have a fail state?

I like the concept of a TBS where combat is done with different minigames for different characters, but personally I wasn't able to enjoy this implementation at all :/

Spellbowl by Excy 2018-04-23T18:40:43Z

Um. I was really interested in the look of this game, but when I tried to play it I could not figure out how to *do* anything. I found I was able to drag some fireball cards around, but no matter where I dragged them to or what keys I pushed, they always just went back to the bottom of the screen without anything else happening. Eventually I got a game over, since nothing I did hurt or stopped the enemies.

Spellbowl by Excy 2018-04-23T19:02:09Z

Oh god, this is really irritating. The amount of vertical space is so small that even understanding now how it's controlled, half the time I try to throw a fireball it just goes back to my hand because I started or stopped dragging in the wrong place. The game seems really neat otherwise, but I would be rating Spellbowl _very_ low in the controls/interface category, if there was one.

Spellbowl by Excy 2018-04-25T12:51:23Z

@excy I did try the game which was what prompted my last comment, but I couldn't get past the second wave of enemies before I was just too frustrated with the interface to continue.

UX should have been higher on your list of priorities!! Most submissions I've played have had an explanation of the controls shown in the game, which is a really good idea. In very few of them was it as frustrating to apply those controls as in Spellbowl. I understand that you put a lot of work into this, and it's obvious that other aspects of the game got a lot of love and care. I think the game could have worked really well if the amount of vertical space you can drag in was greater, and if there was at least some text in the game explaining how to cast spells. (Or, better yet, an animated example.) But it doesn't matter how much content you have or how good good it is if players become so frustrated that they give up on trying to access that content.

I don't want to discourage you - I just hope that next time you participate in LD you give the interface a higher priority!

Conquer a chef's heart by JanWe 2018-04-23T20:08:28Z

I finished the game! https://i.imgur.com/AaUAOUG.png

That was pretty enjoyable. I related to the protagonist in that I also make falawful jokes.

Text Clicker by esenti 2018-04-23T18:51:59Z

Not gonna lie, I'm kind of impressed

Deal 'Em Up by James Dunlap 2018-04-24T08:12:04Z

The idea is pretty cool, though I have to agree with the previous commenter that the controls were clunky

Marco Polo by microwerx 2018-04-24T17:37:20Z

I... won? https://i.imgur.com/rpMH5ND.png

That was a surprisingly engrossing game. Good job!

¶City by Sophie 2018-04-24T08:03:27Z

@james-dunlap Thanks for your feedback! You're absolutely right that there could be more input options. (Unfortunately I could only do so much in the time I had.) Also, when you continue to build, you'll find that your city provides you with some useful tools for getting around...

@yanek Oops! But don't worry, if you enter "help" and take a look at the list of commands, there's one that is intended to help you in just this situation. Remember that you can click the **bold** action names to get some help text about them

¶City by Sophie 2018-04-24T16:40:27Z

When I submitted ¶City, I reported in the description that there were 17,000 words of unique in-game text. I had written a custom script to find all the text strings in my code and count the number of words in them. I was somewhat surprised by the result, but not so much that I questioned it... Until just a short while ago I realized I had made an error. That 17,000 word count was almost exactly double what it should have been, since Python's `re.split` function does this irritating unexpected thing where it includes the whitespace (or whatever else you split on) in your list that you thought was just words. That means the high number was a count of both words and the spaces in between them...

Anyway, a more correct number is 8,622.

¶City by Sophie 2018-04-25T07:06:31Z

@silkworm-sweatshop That sounds like exactly the kind of player experience I was trying to create. It's encouraging to read how playing it felt for you. Thank you much for playing and for your comment!

¶City by Sophie 2018-04-27T21:37:09Z

@hilvon that's why the submission post includes a link to a tutorial!

¶City by Sophie 2018-04-28T14:09:00Z

@hypp Thanks for playing! What kind of feedback were you hoping for? (I guess the text indicator of how far construction has progressed on a building wasn't it?)

¶City by Sophie 2018-05-15T05:38:51Z

@ava-skoog thank you for playing! I'm experienced as both a writer and a programmer, so it's projects like this where I can really let loose.

I live in an apartment, too... it's best name I could come up with for medieval-ish high-density low-wealth housing, though. I've been working a bit on a post-compo version, and I'm open to alternatives!

土星の台頭 - Saturn Rising by p-r 2018-04-23T20:15:26Z

I can tell that some effort went into this! The result is confusing to play, though. Why does one character fall to the bottom of the screen? Why doesn't shooting the red enemies seem to do anything? What's up with the city in the bottom right of the map, and how do I cross the bridge north of it?

All in all a surprisingly weird experience

Witchbeat by dragonxvi 2018-04-28T18:06:16Z

It's so easy to get cornered by those green enemies, and then it's all over, and now after the second time I really don't have the heart to start all over again

I like the music and the characters and the idea, but going from max hearts to none about three seconds after entering a room and thereby losing all my progress is the opposite of fun

StarClick: RTS + Clicker by Lerg 2018-04-23T13:12:42Z

The game is really good-looking, and it sounds pretty good too! I had fun while it lasted, but this game quickly brought my very reasonably-specced OSX laptop to its laggy knees in Chrome, Firefox, and the downloaded version alike...

Colony Sniper by ab200 2018-04-23T18:29:31Z

Ha, the noises the aliens make is really amusing. This is a pretty cool game!

Need for Seeds by t-mw 2018-04-27T07:55:52Z

3,196 on my first try whooo that seems like a lot of seeds https://i.imgur.com/KtEsjE2.png

I enjoyed this! I really liked the way the tractor was controlled. I do think it could have kept my attention for longer if it had an AI opponent, or checkpoints, or _something_ to break up the seeds and stumps in between; the gameplay is pretty bare-bones as it is. (Which, granted, is to be expected when you make something in 48 hours. But still!)

Oregon Trail: Hot Pursuit by merrak 2018-04-27T08:15:30Z

god dammit https://i.imgur.com/AJaD5DF.png

I really like the art and the music! I can't personally say that I'm a fan of Oregon Trail style gameplay though :(

Pill-Boy's Text Adventure Platformer by Damien Remars 2018-04-27T20:13:34Z

I can see why these genres don't go together...

wow that was not a fun game. the jump timing was so picky, which would have been moderately annoying even if I didn't have to type "jump" without making a hasty typo every time I needed to clear a new deathtrap (in which case it was really irritating)

I had to redo the last level because "exit" didn't work and then I ran into an enemy before I could "stop" and figure out what the hell went wrong, which did not add to my enjoyment of the game

https://i.imgur.com/F7Z87Xd.png

Pill-Boy's Text Adventure Platformer by Damien Remars 2018-04-28T10:44:46Z

@damien-remars I played the web version, and I did eventually complete the level and type `win`, but I was confused and irritated that when I went to the door the `exit` command didn't do anything, contrary to the game logic established by all the previous levels. (The game teaches you to type `exit` at a door, and then I died because the rules changed without warning.) It wasn't until after I had gone past it and died that I saw the help text about typing `win` instead of `exit` in this case.

I still have not got the slightest idea how the finger flicking bit was supposed to work

NaN/10 I have no idea what just happened, and you really ought to have either submitted the game as a jam entry or not used this music

FarmPunch by F14K-3R 2018-04-27T08:01:29Z

Short, but I liked the idea and your art was charming!

I was so sad though when the "GAME START" text showed and there wasn't an announcer voice to accompany it...

Age of Spires IV (Text/Console + RTS) by David Greene 2018-04-27T07:47:06Z

I like the design of this game! I wouldn't have expected as simple mechanics to be able to produce an interesting RTS, but I think you managed it. My only complaint is that while the interface looked cool, it was annoying to use at times and the learning curve on it was rougher than it could have been.

Roguespector by Yanek 2018-04-23T20:27:59Z

The graphics are excellent! The gameplay doesn't feel very balanced, though

Zombie Tycoon by David Hunter 2018-04-23T20:24:57Z

I really like the atmosphere of this, and the delivery of the commentary lines. The gameplay itself wasn't very engaging though...

Towered by JPatrick 2018-04-27T18:01:40Z

This is a cool game, if very hard to lose. Though I don't think I would have described tower defense and turn-based strategy as incompatible genres...

Realm Guard by Torak Whiteleopard 2018-04-27T19:43:01Z

Wow, this is a really good use of the theme. I certainly would not have expected a tower defense + deck-building game to work very well, but this is awesome! The towers could use a little more variety, might be nice if they could be upgraded... typical stuff one just doesn't have time to do in one weekend, really. But perhaps if you work on this some more, that could be some excellent stuff to add.

Wave 13 was definitely disproportionately difficult, actually after it killed me in my first game I think it was the only level where even one enemy got to the end in my second game.

Here's the setup that got me through all 20 waves...

Beat Aliens by aaron9 2018-04-23T20:31:34Z

Ha! That was fun. I like the EDM-y theme. If this game taught me anything it is that I absolutely cannot keep a beat with my thumb (on the spacebar) while trying to aim (with wasd)

Maybe if you could optionally click to fire..?

Text Tower Defense by EarthenSky 2018-04-27T20:49:54Z

Wow, ok. I was so annoyed at it and its unconventional interpretation of tower defense mechanics (where basically the only thing that mattered was cooldown and having two distant parts of the road in range) that I had to find out decisively whether it was even possible to finish the game or not.

The verdict, after 10+ attempts: It's possible, but barely. https://i.imgur.com/q9Z0C7l.png

I found that there was an _extremely_ narrow strategy that could win. In the early game, tower placement has to be on a very small set of tiles; I found the only way not to enter a downward spiral starting with wave 4 and continuing in waves 6 and 7 was to build my first three short-range towers in a very specific part of the map. After that, short towers had to be ditched completely (at a very specific point - I think it was wave 12 or 13) and long towers placed very carefully in the outside positions, moving inward, or else they would be overwhelmed by the number of enemies.

The game did at least get me invested enough to spend a respectable chunk of time trying to puzzle it out, but it would have been more enjoyable with just a little bit more leeway in tower placement.

Fishy by ProWolf 2018-04-27T18:46:56Z

... well, I got the ring. I played for a few minutes, and after that I trained a highly advanced AI to play for me until I had $100,000. (You can see an explanation of how this sophisticated AI works here: https://i.imgur.com/ahg6Ewg.png)

I discovered that, to get enough money to purchase the ring, you will need to type `cast` approximately 1,000 times.

I guess this is a game? Technically? I think it might have been more definitely a game if you could ever do anything to accelerate the rate of money gain

Date Attack - A Dating Simulator Idle Game by PineappleBox 2018-04-28T18:46:50Z

That was... really fun actually

Though I didn't feel that my ending was so very terrible as the game said it should be. I really haven't played either PUBG or Fortnite and don't have any strong feelings about my partner's preferences in that regard

https://i.imgur.com/OKcc6y1.png

Excellent work on your first ludum dare entry!

Did I just... die? http://puu.sh/A9FUx/e6e587bf7e.png

I was not expecting this

Perhaps you could have made the player wake up in a hospital, or something, instead of ending the game? I'm not invested enough in the story to do everything over again...

Stealth Casual Farming Simulator by RadioactiveRambo 2018-04-23T13:02:13Z

This is a cool concept! I think this genre combination has some potential.. I'm now convinced that I could really enjoy a more fleshed out stealth game + farming sim.

Brick Clicker by priling 2018-04-27T18:15:53Z

heh, I enjoyed this way more than I should have https://i.imgur.com/y67Cdi5.png

I think you should expand this into a post-compo version! the concept is really neat and it could be an even more fun with more content and balancing

Siege Of The Cloud Empire by HailBurns 2018-04-24T14:58:45Z

The web version, when loaded is just a blank brown screen for me. I tried downloading the win64 version, but I get this error: https://i.imgur.com/b9KYITX.png (I don't normally have problems running Unity games...)

Runnervania by BitJester Media 2018-04-27T19:57:49Z

Oh hey I beat the casual mode https://i.imgur.com/OYVyvnU.png

Not even going to try the hard mode. It was already difficult to a point of being a bit frustrating for me at times

It's a cool concept but other players will probably enjoy more than I did, since I tend to be bad at runners and other reflex games. Kudos for including different difficulty levels though! I appreciated that I could play on a setting that wasn't too much for me.
