I gave up protecting camels and just foraged for resources. Worth it.

evan-minto 2018-04-24 07:22

The turn-based segment could use an extra mechanic or two; once I ran out of money there was seemingly nothing to do but wait for the next shooter segment. I really like the balance between the two though. Things that happened in the turn-based segment forced me to change up my strategy in the shooter. A note on the shooter, though: I feel like the character moves and shoots way too slow, so I felt like I never had good control over the situation. Maybe that's intentional, not sure.

microwerx 2018-04-24 16:13

@heyycap Foraging definitely is a strategy, especially near the end when you're hoping to just make it.

microwerx 2018-04-24 16:16

@Evan-Minto I appreciate your feedback. Running out of money does limit what you can do. As I created the little chance occurrences, it made me want to incorporate those into the mechanic somehow. It's not intentional about the character moving too slow. Initially I had the enemies moving much slower for development purposes, and then sped them up to add difficulty--in the future, I am going to work on making that mechanic feel better.

I... won? https://i.imgur.com/rpMH5ND.png

That was a surprisingly engrossing game. Good job!

microwerx 2018-04-24 17:39

@sophie Great job! you did. I am glad you enjoyed the game.

ananace 2018-04-24 17:54

Those camels sure were dropping like flies during the travelling segments, and medicine was really slow to actually regain you any health. But I guess that's to be expected from a game that's based partially off of Oregon Trail.

Would've been nice to have more things to spend your money on though, maybe additional missiles or even guards to help you kill off the required enemies.

microwerx 2018-04-24 18:10

@ananace So there is a chance to get more missiles to fire, but I think the probability is a bit too low right now. I should probably adjust that so it's more likely to occur. Thanks for the helpful comments. Cheers!

manimal 2018-04-24 19:18

Interesting concempt of the game, actualy it motivate me a lot. There is some issues with balance in your game but very nice work my friend :)

microwerx 2018-04-24 19:25

@mAnimal Thanks for the feedback. It sure is hard to balance a text game in 48 hours to be sure. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

patvanmackelberg 2018-04-25 01:19

I had much more fun than i expected! Very neat game!

microwerx 2018-04-25 06:59

@patvanmackelberg I'm very glad that you enjoyed my game. Thank you!

triastase 2018-04-26 05:51

I needed some time to get used to how things worked, but then I had a good time playing your game!

The controls were a little confusing, because I accidentally changed them from time to time by pressing space. And one time I got stuck at the top of the screen while in the action part. But I still liked it!

microwerx 2018-04-26 05:53

@Triastase I'm glad you like it. I'm going to have to look into the getting stuck part. Cheers!

egawag 2018-04-26 06:11

I will protect my camels to the death! Even if pixel ninjas try to take them away! 10/10 would shoot arrows at doggos to protect camels again.

microwerx 2018-04-26 06:18

@egawag Thanks for the compliment!

candlesan 2018-04-26 06:36

Love the retro throwbacks. Kinda neat getting hit by 2 throwback games simultaneously! :)

microwerx 2018-04-26 06:38

@candlesan I'm glad you enjoyed the game. I had lots of fun making it.

hexagore 2018-04-26 07:24

Played this to the end! Felt pretty close there, was down to my last everything by the time I hit 6000 miles. initely seemed better to go looking for stuff to pick up in the shooting bits rather than trying to protect the camels!

wyatt 2018-04-26 07:52

That was hard! I couldn't make it. Those poor camels.

baubau 2018-04-26 08:17

First day, got sick :( at least I won a fight. Using missles to protect camels is rewarding :)).

zinkler 2018-04-26 08:26

Great take on the adventure genre! I wouldn't really call it a combination of incompatible genres, but it plays great. Oh, and also the improbable scenario is not that improbable, I've got it thrice or something. Good job!

justinooncx 2018-04-26 08:37

Simple as the game was, I found myself enjoying the journey quite a bit! I got lucky and picked up a whole lotta missiles, so defense wasn't so bad... though I'd like a way to buy them instead, like a permanent upgrade! Make you think twice about buying those camels and medicine... Speaking of which, how do I actually use medicine? Or is it not for healing, and for diseases and stuff? Even then, I still get hit pretty bad... Other than that, I liked it. Good job!

blushine 2018-04-26 08:55

Very tough! I kept running out of food, jewels, and medicine. I had plenty of arrows, though! The game was pretty fun, but the concept didn't feel particularly original. I think Oregon Trail already did the "Adventure + Shooter" mashup...

I really liked the graphics and music. Lots of variety with the enemies. And I also liked the little text interludes along the journey.

notpresident35 2018-04-26 14:41

Good job! I like the mix of genres, and I think you did a good job on the idea! The art is quite nice, although you could fix the sprite packing so it doesn't have random partial pixels in boxes around sprites (if this is unity, go to the import settings and change filter mode to point and compression to none). The music was okay, and the game was fun, but SUPER hard. Maybe make it a little more common to obtain resources and jewels and a little less common to get tapeworms? Seriously, I got tapeworms like three times. What am I doing, drinking larva infested water?

Good job, and good luck!

microwerx 2018-04-26 16:59

@hexagore Great, I hope it was edge of the seat at the end!

@Wyatt Those poor camels indeed. I hope it was amusing to watch them wither away.

@BauBau I'm glad using missiles was therapeutic.

@Zinkler I've got to work on that improbable event. I'm selecting scenarios with a RNG, but I should use a scrambled list and step through there so that there is few repeats.

@justinooncx So medicine works by healing your health 2 points at a time while you are under 10. As I was developing/play testing the game, many of the scenarios I invented seemed like they would be good elements to incorporate.

@BluShine Thank you for your feedback! I think Oregon Trail incorporated a mini game where you could go hunting for food, though I think not quite as intense as a normal shooter. I'm glad all the little bits of detail added to the experience.

@notpresident35 You're right, I should probably add fresh Himalayan spring water to rejuvenate Marco Polo from time to time. The sprite packing was a side effect of rendering sprites from an image to a HTML5 canvas. I made the graphics engine from scratch and attempted to fix the blitting, but then the alpha was getting all messed up. I will improve upon that in the future.

Thank you all for your feedback. You guys are great! I'm going to take a look at your games.

p-r 2018-04-28 10:35

yay! I did it, 6011 miles :) but it was challenging. I would like the missile key to be space or other besides return

microwerx 2018-04-28 15:13

@p-r Thank you for the feedback. I might be able to add SPACE in the future...depends how much time I have.

von-vista 2018-04-28 15:47

A very challenging and hard game indeed, I feel like I must play it more to get the hang of it and actually get far , anyways, reminded me a lot of Oregon Trail but overall, really good job!

microwerx 2018-04-28 18:15

@Von Vista As a developer, I feel like you have to play your game to completion just to make sure it's actually beatable. Yea, it's tough. Thanks for your feedback!

kr4ft3r 2018-04-29 21:03

I never expected this to happen, but I ended up playing to the end and won on the first try. The best way to play is to go through textual parts as fast as possible so the action part feels less like an interference and more like natural rhythm of the game. I like how you can risk your health or camels to loot more supplies during the combat phase. GJ on gameplay, graphics, style and sound design.

microwerx 2018-04-29 22:58

@kr4ft3r Thank you very much for the feedback. I hoped very much that different strategies would be possible for players, rather than just one dynamic.

csanyk 2018-05-03 01:12

Pretty good. For the inspirations you listed for shooters, I was expecting a vertical scroller, which this is not. I liked that you could pick up bonuses in the shooting rounds, it really helped once I figured out I could do that. I almost made it, but died with only a few hundred miles to go when I lost my last camels to an unfortunate accident!

microwerx 2018-05-15 16:00

@csanyk Thank you for your feedback. Those unfortunate accidents!
