Wow, I'm amazed. This is a great looking game for 48 hours. The look and feel are incredible and looks a lot like the original game. Also, I will give 5 stars in humor just because of the rocket oxen scene.

Haha, well done. Deuces Sheriff Marbles, 10/10, would rocket launch my oxen again.

biterkid 2018-04-23 03:56

Wow! Impressive! This one is the best I've played so far. The police lights over the sherif wagon... 10/10 Bow Bones would die with a broken bone again.

can you upload a version that doesn't require flash? I would love to try this hilariously themed game.

Wow! This is the probably the most complete game I've seen in Ludum Dare ever. You nailed aesthetic, and mechanically it felt so much like a parody of oregon trail. It's been a long time since I have played the original, but it feels just right. About the only thing wrong I notices is that the Sheriff likes to beat a dead horse; he killed my partner then shot him three more times before switching over to my main character.

I made it 189 days before being shot by the sheriff.

This is a strange little game ;-)

I love the graphics, this art style is really cool, dithering for the win! :-)

The 8 bit music and sound effects fit the graphics very well, the mood of the game, the atmosphere is very consistent, great job!

I think a little more instructions on what to do and what the next goal and current progress are would be nice. The sheriff shot us a couple of times, seems I was out of luck so far.

Overall a cool idea, nice job!

Very fun, I like how it suggests the amount you should buy for the journey. The game overall is a bit confusing on how to navigate, but I was able to understand it fairly quickly. I ended up getting into a fire fight with sheriff marbles and wasn't sure if you could kill him, he did kill my partner and then I died from running out of food lol.

Thanks for all the feedback so far!

I think the original game came with a separate manual--probably in a folder with other materials for the teacher to use in class. It would've been nice to have had time to write up a proper manual. One of the bigger features I didn't have time to implement was the map of the entire trail, which would help with planning.

For anyone wondering, here is the trail: (start)---(river)---(outpost)---(river)---(river)---(outpost)---(barrier)---(river)---(goal)

The sheriff gets faster in the later "levels", and the probability of successfully rafting across the river decreases. The main difference between the difficulty levels is how many nitrous oxide bottles you can afford.

You can only hunt if you're far from the sheriff. If you run low on food you can use a nitrous bottle to leap far ahead of him, then go hunting for a couple of rounds.

@epiin Thanks for your interest! I added an HTML5 version. Please see the comment in the change log, though. I didn't make any changes to the source, so this should be identical to the Flash version--but I'm using a beta version of my development environment (Stencyl), so I can't guarantee there aren't new bugs in this version that aren't present in the Flash.

Very fun. The visuals and audio are great. I was playing on a laptop, and didn't have a dedicated numpad, so hunting was a bit weird. My partner, Bingus, managed to get posthumous dysentery (I think he had dysentery before he died, too? Not sure.) Overall really good. Great work.

Nice oregon-trail like game. It would be nice to have some way to make money, perhaps selling goods and such or doing an odd job and a better hunting mechanic rather than just standing still shooting in a set directions. Anyways, nice work!

dark-roast-studios 2018-04-25 06:17

nice job, really like the old skool graphics and feel of the game. I wasn't sure how hunting worked but everything else seemed to work well. Very inventive :)

Always wanted to try playing Oregon Trail, but never had chance to. This was awesome! Flying Cow was cute too.

I really like the art and the music! I can't personally say that I'm a fan of Oregon Trail style gameplay though :(

@cpt-slimers I can't seem to reproduce that bug, but I also don't think you're the only one to mention it. Glad you enjoyed the visuals and audio!

@raiyumi Thanks! I thought about having a selling goods option too, actually. I tried to stick as close to the Apple II version, though--which I'm glad I did. I pushed this one right up to the last minute. (The hunting minigame was the last thing I did and I had about 30 minutes to do it).

@dark-roast-studios Sometimes it takes a while for animals to appear. For better or worse, I think I did capture the feel of the original hunting game. I remember sometimes nothing would appear. It works on a timer--every so many seconds one tick passes, and there's a chance an animal may appear at the start of a tick. After so many ticks your hunter will give up. If you're unlucky, all ticks may pass without an animal appearing at all.

@jeffrey-hwang Thanks!

@sophie So close! I think people remember the game more fondly because it was a game we could play at school.

I think it's amazing that you did this in such little time. It looks and feels so much like the original game. Great work!

It would be nice if you could trade or sell items. I spent all my money and then realized I didn't need 500 bullets.

merrak 2018-05-08 05:45

@init-py Thanks! I don't think you could sell or trade in the original Apple II version, which is why I left it out. But I think it would make sense to be able to do that. After all, there are other travelers on the trail, too. It'd definitely be something to put into an updated version... along with other travelers to trade with and maybe interact with on the trail itself.
