Nice work! I didn't know it was the Gameboy's birthday... cool. I liked the sort of procedural graphics feel within the confines of the limited display.

rakowu 2019-04-30 05:45

Great! I love that art style and gameboy oldschool feeling :D

justuspan 2019-04-30 05:50

fantastic retro style game!

josh-mcmillan 2019-04-30 06:02

Did a great job capturing the look of the GameBoy! The only thing about it is that the collisions feel a bit sticky whenever I'm trying to jump over a brick while moving. Other than that, wonderful aesthetic!

barret 2019-05-01 01:32

the intro part to the game made me think I was about to jump into a gameboy battle royale that was actually really cool. I did like the concept of building and breaking bricks. It seemed like the level was pretty pretty good tutorial level to teach the concepts, of course game jams you always run out of time to do more so it was nice to see something pretty fleshed out. It was a little difficult to do the brick laying but I got the hang of it

The main thing I would of loved to see would of been some sweet music to match with the aesthetic and sfx but It's understandable that music is not easy to make.

Either way I enjoyed the game and how you went full into the gameboy look and feel

chompdev 2019-05-01 01:34

Cool ideas here! Took me a second to get the title :P I like the building/destruction mechanics and the combat was fun. I liked being able to destroy a tower to get to enemies that were out of range. Nice work, Chance!

gamepopper 2019-05-01 19:53

Good ideas in here, I like the Gameboy aesthetic but not a fan of how blurry the pixel art is. Took me a while to realise you can build blocks by pressing both action buttons at once.

deathbysnail 2019-05-01 22:22

Cool!

black-flag 2019-05-02 15:01

Really love the aesthetics, really cool! Overall really satisfying gameplay!

mennchen22 2019-05-02 15:03

The design is pretty awesome, the character glitch, the drop in the beginning  Nice win animation :dancer_tone5:

Enemys are a bit to easy to dodge Great entry over all!

bluwind360 2019-05-03 06:43

really enjoyed the game.. even managed to get through the unbreakable wall at the end.. If you push against it and start jumping while shooting your character places blocks underneath you which push you through the wall... just a little sad that I didn't find an easter egg at the very end there :(

well done on a cracking entry

candlesan 2019-05-03 06:52

Cool retro aesthetics. The Battle Royale style drop at the beginning was hilarious - mixing that retro style with such a modern twist.

microwerx 2019-05-03 08:28

Groovy dance moves! I like the Pilotwings-ish landing at the beginning and the fun dance moves at the end.

dev-for-pizza 2019-05-03 08:31

Really cool style, love it :D

dimesto52 2019-05-03 08:40

game a bit short

datagreed 2019-05-03 18:59

The skydiving was cool - reminded me of MDK or battle royale games. The art style - damn, this is so cool! Does the dropping location actually change anything in the level? Seems like it's the same level anyway :)

Sometimes when you jump near a wall you can break a tile at your headlevel that is not directly above you, but to the side.

I got stuck here not being able to get out of those bricks: Скриншот 2019-05-03 19.57.15.png

elrobo 2019-05-04 00:02

@bluwind360 wish I had gotten more in there, I did want to get a few secrets and some items from breaking bricks, but had to work on the weekend. Thanks for playing!

@datagreed The drop location doesn't change the level (another unfinished feature) but hitting the target spawns an axe weapon beside your character which makes it much easier (again wanted to get some more random loot on the level, but time). Yes my collision code was very sloppy for breaking bricks or stomping on enemies. Hmmm your stuck position should have let you still hit the bricks with your weapon to break them, maybe it wasn't triggering correctly. Sorry about that. Thanks for all the feedback!

kiv 2019-05-04 13:06

Like the artstyle!

gonutz 2019-05-04 13:32

In-game instructions would have been nice, I only read the brick-building thing after I finished the game. Did not need it however. The real problem with the controls is that my X and Z key are no where near each other, you seem to assume a US keyboard layout which is obviously not true for many LD participants.

The gameplay is simple but fine. I think the game is way too easy overall. I did not like that you could jump twice in the time it takes to reload. Most games make it possible to jump twice and be able to shoot in the middle, which is a good thing to do. At least some indicator as to when I can shoot again would have been nice.

I relly like the graphics. Anti-aliased gameboy graphics? I'm in! Really cool what you did with just four colors :-)

elrobo 2019-05-04 22:43

@gonutz I agree, and have the same sentiment when playing games, instructions should be in the game, my use of the theme in that regard is poorly explained. Also agreed on the weapon cooldown being visible and a bit more tuned. And big oof on the keyboard, yes that was a poor assumption.

Thanks for playing and commenting!

gonutz 2019-05-04 22:49

Thanks for taking my critique so well! That is actually impressive. I always try to formulate negative things in a way that is helpful but I have never received such a good reaction to it! Looking forward to your next LD games :-)

supernapie 2019-05-05 14:57

The idea that you can destroy the bricks underneath the enemies, make them fall and then kill them, is really cool. What is also pretty cool is that i got the enemies killing each other when i stood underneath one of them. I don't think i like the anti-aliased graphics, i would just round positions to whole pixels and turn anti-aliasing off. But you know maybe that is just my taste.

paul59 2019-05-10 08:48

Well that was different - and good! Nice art style, interesting take on a simple platformer, thumbs up from me!

dis0rder 2019-05-10 19:13

This was somehow a very obscure playing experience, but in a weird way I liked it!

When you get a hold of the underlying mechanics, it gets more fun.

derpylz 2019-05-10 19:56

Interesting idea. For me the keyboard layout was the most fun-limiting part. Otherwise a fun experience.

pengda 2019-05-11 01:26

A very attractive art style.

Enigmatic humor

cheesepencil 2019-05-11 03:51

You mashed up two things I wouldn't normally mash up (like nuts and gum) but the experience was good actually? I hope game boy is proud of you. I thought the styling of the itch page was the icing on the cake.

yoanndeplo 2019-05-12 09:54

That win dance . Very good job for the graphics. I never played with the classic gameboy, but I spent days on the gameboy color ^^.

mieeh 2019-05-12 20:56

Loved it! A really stand out entry in terms of style. Nice work

jordantanner 2019-05-13 10:22

@elrobo Diggin the gameboy style, man. Gameplay was basic but felt pretty good. Certainly some Mario influence with the block breaking, nice! As others have said, the retro style stands out. Nice work!

neontropics 2019-05-13 22:17

At first I thought the graphics were a bit too glitchy, but they have a nice charm to them!

The sounds are great and definitely classic GB ones fitting the graphics. The generla shooting/jumping physics don't feel that satisfying and the "ball" you shoot just kinda goes in a weird way - this kinda works with the general glitchy asthetic, but I think I would have liked this to be a bit tighter.

aeveis 2019-05-18 05:31

The graphics are very interesting with the kind of blurry pixels. took a bit to figure out brick building was, game was pretty easy after that. I like how bopping the brick would defeat the enemies instantly. Keep up the good work!
