Love the game. Huge Star Trek fan and I love how each puzzle feels the same, but is also unique in its own way.
Fun game, I love the death animation lol
Not bad. A little generic, would've liked to see some more uniqueness, but still fun to mess around on :)
@chris-dirkis Thanks for the feedback. In terms of limitations the idea of the game was there’d be many more different kinds of obstacles and it would be a balance of monitoring your player with your left hand and having to destroy enemies and place blocks with the right hand. More of a reflex thing than decision making, I just didn’t have the time to implement more complex obstacles.
@tejasvonly Thanks for the feedback. Oh no! The dying and score was a last minute rush job, knew I’d miss something :(
@eriku That's longer than any of my attempts haha and yeah, the big "Score: 0" was implemented with like 5 minutes left on the clock and I must've forgot to make that "0" dynamic and reflect the actual score.
@the-neon-shark Thanks for the points :) most of the points you have are basically things I would've done if I had more time. If I had more time there's a lot of things I could've added, but I knew I wouldn't be able to get anything done on the third day due to work so I submitted what I had to compo. For things like the "START" button, there was also meant to be other buttons for "TUTORIAL" and "CONFIGS" and it was meant to have an on hover effect. Just didn't have the time. Same as the reset button. And the controls I would've liked to narrow down. It's unfortunate you didn't have an easy time with the placing a platform and killing enemies. The whole point of the game is that later on in the levels there will be more enemies with more going on and it's a balance of controlling the enemy with you left hand, placing blocks as you need them, and killing enemies to stop from dying. So it's like a reflex/multi-tasking challenge. And with falling off blocks, if you hold down the jump button it will jump as soon as it hits a block. So all you need to do is place a block down roughly in the location where you think the player will be, then fine tune the landing position with A/D and hold onto the jump button so it bounces off the platform. But I really do appreciate the input, I'll take it all into account when I flesh it out into a real game.
@fabdynamic Glad to hear you liked the graphics and found the controls innovative. I was trying to think of ways to make a platformer that wasn't just a "move, jump, shoot" platformer, then I had the idea of killing enemies with clicking on them and placing down platforms. Eventually it turned into an infinite runner, but I'm thinking of going back to a fast-paced action platformer with a bit of Celeste-like puzzle elements (limited platforms you can place, multiple ways to finish each level, etc.)
@ixchow I made a comment earlier providing a link that works :) I accidentally copied the wrong link when I published the game for compo
Good job, only complaint I have is there seems to be a delay between when I release the left/right button and the ship stopping.
Awesome game :) UI is a little glitchy, but nothing game breaking, still had a great time.
Not bad :) I wished it was more of a puzzle game where I had to figure out what to do, often it was just clicking and the line would fill on its own and then moving. The idea of moving between dimensions and what you do in one affects the other is really cool though
Awesome game, managed to set the highscore of 142k :)
Really love this game, got me addicted for a short while. Was able to complete the game entirely through bonks, that mechanic is a little overpowered lol. All you need is the one stock, don't get the upgrades to add more stocks, and then get the bonk upgrades which get you more stocks per bonk. Soon it'll be raining money. And if you run out of liquid, then sell a few thousand when the market is at its peak and then bonk when it's lower, rinse and repeat.
Terrible difficulty curve, couldn't even finish the game (jk, was fun :) )
The idea of the game is pretty good, just needs some polishing. Like bullets going off the screen and a couple times the bullets didn't move at all between turns. It was also pretty slow, once I killed the enemy I had to move all the way to the portal which felt tedious
Pretty solid game for Ludum Dare, not very buggy, just small things like the music (too repetitive), no sound effects, the balls sometimes bounced off the walls at weird angles, graphics could be a bit better and gameplay felt too slow for a bullet hell game. But honestly, this game is pretty solid. You have a good idea, nice implementation and a fun game. The stuff I mentioned is only if you want to polish off your game in the future
Had so much fun playing this game, I love rhythm games. Especially with the guys in the background dancing, they made me laugh a few times. Easily my favorite soundtrack of all the LD games I've played so far
I really like the idea behind this game. I felt like the graphics and audio were a bit lacking, but the concept and implementation of this game are spot on!!
@Secretmapper your graphics and audio are so much better than what I could do, I suck at anything artsy. The only thing I'm half-decent at is programming and even then I limit myself to simple games
Like always, your pico-8 games are absolutely amazing, I'll have to read through the source and see what I can learn from this
Absolutely love this game, all the audio and graphics are spot on. Very well done!!
Interesting game, was really hard and I couldn't even make it past the first level!! Although the graphics aren't the best, that's not what matters. The game was very well implemented :)
Haha love the idea of the game, taking Binding of Isaac and turning it in to Bonding of Isaac, but unfortunately the game was just too unfinished. No music, no sound effects, no animations and the pixel graphics aren't that great. But I love the weapons and ammo, props for that!!
@batmanasb That's all part of the ludum dare experience, knowing your skill set and being able to allocate your time accordingly. And I'm definitely with you on the basis that creating a fun game with bad graphics is better than creating a bad game with good graphics, just look at mine haha. If you continued to work on this game and end up polishing it up some more, I'd definitely be interested in playing it some more
Pretty solid game for Ludum Dare, just feel like it wasn't polished quite enough. I really like the idea behind it, if you spent a little more time on it then it would be a great game. Love the graphics :)
Love the game, my aim sucks but I still really enjoyed it. The artwork was great and the background music was great. I'll definitely keep this in my library and play it when I get bored next
Love the mechanics of the game! The background music and pixel graphics really set the mood, great casual game that could keep me entertained for a while
It's an interesting concept, love the cucumbers X3
I remember seeing a gif of this while scrolling through the blog posts one time and was so keen to try it out, you didn't disappoint!! The way this game is set out is fantastic, you did such a good job!!
Absolutely love the game although I couldn't get past a few thousand points. I like to think I'm fairly good at tetris, but rotating everything on the side and then using flappy bird controls really shook things up.
WHAT THE ACTUAL ***!!!! I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT!!
Fun game, although I don't like the background music. Was cool for the first couple loops but got irritating after a while. The graphics look pretty cool too :)
Nice little game, kept me entertained for longer than I expected. Wish you spent a little longer on the graphics and the sound effect at the end when the score was being tallied up I didn't like, but overall it's a pretty nice game :)
This game.. this bloody game.. XD Honestly, how did you even think of this. I thought it was a horror/maze/puzzle game and was like "I like horror games, let's test this". I started hearing the monster and was like "yeah, come on, where are you". Saw him, thought "huh, not as scary as I thought he'd be" AND THEN HE STARTED DANCING!!!!! WHAT THE ACTUAL XD XD XD
Always nice to see another game made with pico-8 and for your first try, it's pretty good! There were just a few things that irritated me like the constant beeping noise when shooting and no sound when scrolling up and down the menu. But overall, not a bad first game :)
OH HEELLL NAH!!! I aint completing this!! Even though I'm pretty sure I could, I honestly can't be bothered. Took me too long to get through the first few levels. But I love the game!! Lost it at the start when you said "Click 'RUN', Cry, Debug, Succeed" X3 I absolutely know how that feels
love the concept behind this game, very well done :)
Really love the game, was just curious to see why you decided to make it with tic-80 instead of pico-8. I always thought that tic-80 was just a cheap rip-off, but it looks like it has more colors and a bigger screen. Might look more in to it, though I do like the restrictiveness of the pico-8
Great concept, very well polished for a compo game. Great job!!
Gratz on this game, you did a really good job!! The art and music were very polished, especially for a game jam
Haha love the humor in this game, was quite enjoyable seeing what descriptions you had for the different animals. Shows that you don't need fancy graphics to have fun!!
Love the game, the rain affect tripped me up so much. Highscore of 160, tried so hard to get to the top of the leaderboard X3 at least I'm visible
It's a cool game, not sure how it fits the theme though. Love the sketch-like graphics
Great game, love the music. I couldn't figure out how to make a sword though. You said stick>stick>iron bar>iron bar, but I couldn't figure out how to obtain an iron bar. I got the brown rocky thingy but that didn't seem to work, figured I needed a oven or something to make it. But despite that, it's a really awesome game :)
@Lemons Ahh, that makes sense. I tried doing stuff with the campfire but I couldn't figure it out X3 I'll definitely keep this game in my collection for when I have a spare few minutes every now and then
@batmanasb on the menu, use the up and down arrow keys and then press 'Z' to select the option. I recommend starting with the tutorial. When in the game, use the left and right arrow keys to move and the up arrow key to jump. If you press 'Z' while in-game it will restart the level and 'X' will take you back to the main menu
@batmanasb thanks for the feedback, glad you were able to finish all the levels :) I guess depending how you play some tiles can flash too quick. The way that I designed the levels meant that you didn't have to jump really high and thus when you're meant to fall you can see the tiles clearly enough. I want to keep developing this game when I'm allowed to (after the compo game playing period has finished) and I'll make sure to fix that, probably by including a maximum vspeed.
@KScorp Thanks for the feedback :) I understand that the physics isn't perfect, need to slow it down a little, will fix that when I continue working on this game after the testing period is over for ludum dare. The controls did take some time to think about. I was using a game engine I've never used before so I decided to keep it simple and use the built-in functions. I did at first use the "btn()" function which indicates when a button is being held, but instead opted to use "btnp()" which gets triggered only when the button is first pressed. I chose this because I felt like it would offer more control pressing the buttons individually and moving one entire space each time which would make the game easier
@KScorp yeah, I noticed that as well, I'll see if I can fix it. If I had time or was more experienced with pico-8 then I would have fixed it before publishing, but to me it was too minor to waste time on when I had so many problems with the way I was loading in levels.
@mao Oh, I see, it's a good idea but I like the fact that you're not able to see anything above or below, means you have to do a lot of trial and error to figure out the map. Maybe in the future I'll include an "easy" mode where you'll be able to see what's below the tiles in front of you
@GastricSparrow I feel so honored that mine was the first game you've played this Ludum Dare :) I'm so glad you enjoyed the game!!
@herman-chau Good idea for a level, I'll definitely add that in while I'm developing it. Yeah, this game isn't just about moving around trying to figure out where to go, especially in the later stages of the game it'll be a lot of timing and memorising when you need to move and by how much.
@herman-chau I might implement conveyor belts later in the game, probably in the last few levels simply because it's a little hard to see what's going on in 1D. I'm also trying to figure out a better way ts show when you pass the level and when you die simply by sounds, trying to think of an animation or special effect that fits the art style of the game
@IronyGames Yeah, I decided to take a side-on approach for this. I was considering making a 1D dungeon crawler game but decided this would be more interesting and challenging. Though I might come back to the 1D dungeon crawler game sometime in the future, I like way 1D feels
@belowparallel-ian Platformer / 1-Dimensional. Not sure if it's considered a 'genre', but if 2D and 3D are, then why not 1D?
Hey everyone, thanks so much for all the support, it means so much to me. You have have noticed that I changed the links for my game, that's because I wanted to continue working on the game but since LD41 is still going, I shouldn't be updating my game. I moved the original LD41 version and now I'm going to have an updating version on my itch.io profile, you can play it here: https://timeload.itch.io/yaxis (the old link).
@steve I liked your idea of shifting the player up and down a pixel when they're jumping and falling so I implemented it in my latest version, check it out to see what you think :)
@caeonosphere I love simple, yet challenging games. It gets in your head. You sit there thinking "come on, this is so simple, why can't I do it!" and then once you figure it out and complete it, it's so satisfying
@Secretmapper thanks for playing and so glad you liked it!! I haven't played fez but I've seen it before, similar idea. Shortly after starting development I remember seeing another similar game but it went from 4D to 3D, that was a really cool game hut I can't remember what it was called
Fun little game you have here, would've loved it if the chat was dynamic and you implemented some kind of AI for the platforms but for what it is, it's a pretty good game :) well done!
Great game, was very challenging. I'd say make the beat that you're meant to type to stand out more, I had difficulty hearing when I was meant to press a key
Nice game, pretty solid for Ludum Dare. The only real problem I have is that it feels too slow and games take too long. Maybe that's just me because I can touch type at about 130wpm, but other than that I have no complaints :)
love the game!! Even though I wasn't able to get more than a couple hundred points I still had fun :)
@merrak I'm currently running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and playing the Windows version using the current version of wine, try running it through wine if you want to play
Love the idea and artwork, though at points in the story I got lost as to what the symbols meant haha
