This was a really interesting game! I found myself just spamming cards, however. I think enforcing a short delay after the card is played would help alleviate that issue. Great work!

This was a really interesting game! I found myself just spamming cards, however. I think enforcing a short delay after the card is played would help alleviate that issue. Great work!
Great to see it finished!
@jcsirron that was the original idea but it kinda made the game feel jaggy. Despite all the visual feedback, it was very easy to press the button just a tad bit too early. And people found it fun to spam the cards
Idea is fun, graphics are great, GG!
One of the best I have seen this far. A personal concept, good gameplay and wonderful graphics. Great job!
Great game, this is one on the top on my list. Well done pixel art and fun gameplay.
I did find it a little bit difficult to understand, but after playing a while, it got a lot better.
Great job!
Fantastic game. Would be disappointed if this game doesn't win or get close to winning in one of the categories, it's just really good. The art, gameplay, idea and sound are all fantastic. Definitely think about pushing this post-jam!
this was super fun and really great looking. I liked the minimal sounds too. excellent scope and polish! was looking forward to peeking at the source code a bit though. i like the camera shake / pixellation effect quite a bit. nice game :)
minimal sounds was more like I didn't have time to figure out how it works :) you can take a look at the source code just by hitting ESC and quit to TIC-80, and ESC again to enter the editor. The build comes packed with everything.
@niksg I uploaded the TIC-80 cartridge for convenience.
@MateCziner amazing!!
Nice sprites, and so much lovely juice. Feels like it suffers from a regular problems of arkanoid games, pacing feels kind of sluggish. I don't really feel like I understand the fail condition.
Amazing idea. Very well executed, good job!
Really well done, amazing work! Very polished for a compo game.
very original idea. I appreciated that the ball is still moving when I have to choose the card. Good job.
Great visuals. Sounds are also nice, maybe add a nice 8 bit music. Sadly the game was easily exploitable, by just spamming the "UP"-Key. Still a very good game!
I love the visual and sound feedback. It's pretty fun too!
Really nice implemented. Inovator concept and easy to understand and play controls. Very nice job indedd.
Nice job! I love the aesthetic of this game, and the feedback is great! The two genres mesh a little well to seem incompatible, and it could use some music, but other than that, great job! Good luck!
Very well implemented and it feels very fleshed out. The graphics are (as everyone has said) excellent! It would be interesting to know how the TIC-80 compare to pico-8 (if you've used it). I like pico-8 but i also like more things to make game in. =)
You fit into theme perfectly :) Perfect job for only 48 hours. Your games seems polished and solid. Your art abilities are great :)
Super cool and polished (and I LOVED the color palette). I liked your take on the theme, though it took me a bit to figure out how everything works. Also I'm not sure if the game is pretty hard or I'm just terrible at it hahaha.
@nilstastic it's my first time even using TIC-80, but you should ask @egordorichev, he has a lot of experience with both PICO-8 and TIC-80.
I've chosen TIC because of the larger screen, flexible palette, and negligible restriction on code size.
@Jonathan-whiting the fail condition is running out of balls, which can happen in two ways: the red mooks might eat it, or sometimes the ball might get stuck into a wall if it goes too fast (which is actually a bug)
Awesome idea! Combination of genres I would never thought may be combined, but it really works great. And very polished as well!
I loved this game, took 2 game types I already love and made a very RAD experience. I saved it to my itch.io collection so I can get some Breakout card game action again later!
Amazing art style, full of character; brilliant take on the theme (this game is a clear example of the things I was expecting when I voted for the theme) and impressive execution in general, packed with content (16 levels!)
The only area that wasn't so strong as the rest was the sound effects. Retro-sounds are a perfect fit for retro graphics, but some of them felt a bit rough and grating.
Congratulations for a great game! :)
Really cool idea! It's fun to play! I can just keep press Up button, then i have many balls on the screen, haha
Spamming the cards was a bit of an exploit, but once you tell yourself "hey don't do that" it was fun to try to see how fast you could solve it :D
Great idea and very well implemented! I spent more than 1 hour playing. Very fun, I hope to see a complete version for mobile, you can add some adds and leave to download, I would play a lot :) Take a look on my game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/vector-rabbits-slayer
Really nice job sticking to the core of the theme - too many games stick to one genre with a "theme" from another genre, but this one really blends them well. Like others have said, I think spamming becomes the best option because of the extra balls it generates. Do that for about 30 seconds and then play out the level, haha. Overall really nicely done and makes me want to use the TIC-80 for a project!
Neat entry! Definitely in need of some balancing, but I could see this being a really solid game with just a bit more polish! There's a surprising amount of content for a jam game, and it's a cool concept.
btw, there seems to be some issue with the audio, where sounds stop for awhile and then a whole bunch play all at once, as if catching up to the gameplay. This may just be an issue with the engine though, so
These trails were sweeeet!
As I started, I assumed it would rely more on CCG ability than Arkanoid ability. I was so wrong...
Wonderful game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 41 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQphYmNNYE4
Hands down the best game of the jam yet!
How does it even possible to do so much (design, code, art, levels, testing and etc.) over a weekend? Well done.
Loved the game. Found a cheat: Just press up repeatedly :)
@Jupiter-Hadley I did, thank you! :)
Pretty good, But you can always win if you just mash up.
NICE. That game has almost everything it needs. You just should let us lose, because you can play forever and finally win :D You know, something like restricted amount of cards etc :D
My first favourite game of the Ludum Dare 41! The card game with a breakout like game is just genius. The slow-motion feature makes it all still feel player in real-time instead of doing a hard-pause, avoiding the "turn-based" feel of a cardgame. There are a lot of cards with interesting and fun effects! This could be made further where you make your own deck etc. The style is spot on for the a more classic arcade-feel and the cards have very easy to understand symbols even with the pixelated graphics. Love to see more of this! Going to spend some more time playing it.
@GameDevMumin yes I agree. I didn't really have time left to properly balance the gameplay, so I left it open ended rather than accidentally making it unbeatable and un-fun by slapping on some untested restriction.
Super cool concept and fun gameplay!
This is awesome! really neat fun little game :D Great execution for an LD I like it!
No words, this game is awesome. Maybe for a future version add some incentive to not spam the cards as it is the most effective way to complete a level  This would make a great mobile game as well.
I’d love for you to review my submission as well.
it is an awesome game. just took me a while to figure out how it works. well done
A fantastic entry! A likely compo top 3 or even winner.
Aaah, this is so much fun! At some points you just want to use that card as well as you can even if it's not its most fitting situation. Would love to play this as a full-er release!
I encountered some bugs, finishing a level and starting on a blank one, and then after winning that level for some weird inexplicable thing, play the next one and after breaking all the blocks the level wasn't over.
Also level 5 it's almost impossible try to play with strategy but it's really easy if you just start to spam cards. Thats because of the new ball cards, you continuiously add balls to the level so it's not easy to lose.
I loved this game, my favorite since I saw the first screenshot. Congratulations!
It was really fun and I liked the characters! The concept was cool and different from what I was expecting! Good job! :)
Proposed by itch.io, don't regret it. Could use a little bit more clarity as you aren't sure what you can hit or not, but the idea is genius, graphisms are perfect, so is gameplay. Well done man ! Would love to have a mode where time isn't slowed down !
very cool concept, and smooth movement! Pretty fun game! Great graphics.
If you have time, check out my entry: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/golden-beak-golf :)
very neat and this game kept me very entertained. Also these graphics never saw a TIC80 game look so mmmmh
I loved this visual style and animations are really cool. It's a shame it don't have sound effects.
I need this game on my phone, it is great, deeply addictive. The UI is good looking but not that comfortable to use, and I found myself a bit disoriented in the first playthrough. I really hope you will further improve the concept because it is a blast to play :)
so nice comments, thanks everyone! made my first ludum dare a blast already
Really fun game and wonderful interpretation of the theme, loved the snipe card, it was especially satisfying to use. Lost once due to the ball glitching into the wall but other than that the game is really cohesive and satisfying to play. Fun!
Realy cool !!!
Nice game ;)! But it would be useful for me to have an option that speeds up time when we want to use card a little bit later.
Extremely fun, great combination - love the graphics and game mechanics - needs background music and maybe a timer  Overall awesome entry
super fun game, i liked the graphics, great job
the art its awesome, i love it, and its very easy to play, very hard to master, and very fun, you have made a awesome job
Novel concept, fun gameplay, incredible polish, and fits the theme perfectly. Amazing work!
This is so awesome and polished! Seriously well done!
Easily my favorite game so far. Fits the theme great, is fun to play, graphics are perfect for it, sounds fit the style, controls are simple and intuitive. Fantastic job!
Very fun and challenging - perhaps even too much so. Graphics are amazing and very consistently good. Palette swap was a fun addition
Nice concept! loved it! I think I ended up playing this more time than I expected :p.
No noticeable bugs, and great graphics
Great graphics and animation. Great use of tic80 too! :clap_tone1:
It was an interesting mix, very innovative and the art is great. I have this problem of trying to play LD games without thorougly reading the instructions and took a long time to figure out what was happening, but then everything clicked and I found it a nice idea. The underside is that even after understanding it I couldn't progress much. I tried to play it without spamming and it took so much time to pass stages. Maybe it's just me. Keep up the work.
Good job! Cool game!
I rate your game, if I can give a game in my game, Witch's Escape.
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/witchs-escape
My favorite part was getting to the second level and spamming the up arrow :) lovely idea, great game. ggm8
Wow, really cool game! the mechanics are excelent and the implementation is really good. The sounds that play as the ball moves is awesome. Very good, congrats!
Love the game mechanics! Game loos completed and polished. Playing 5 levels and still can't understand some rules, and after I've completed level and move next - I got in random (?) level instead next. So I have to return back to start next level after which I have done.
Huh, I never heard of TIC-80 before, but now I'm going to have to check it out. :)
@stderr it's great stuff, very much like PICO-8, but with less harsh limitations and modifiable color palette.
I’m not sure if you were able to see it, but I played your game on my stream at https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames tonight.
The artwork was very well done. I liked the mechanic of playing cards to control the ball. I had to time when I played the card just right to create a useful move vs shoot off the screen. I also needed to plan out my moves because until I played all my cards I wouldn't get a new hand. This encouraged the player to use the cards wisely and not just spam the ones that seem good.
I didn't fully understand why some of the creatures were different colors and wore hats. Was this simply a visual indication that you needed to hit them more than once to defeat, or was there something more?
Thank you for making this game. It seemed very polished and professional. It was a joy to play.
fun idea)
The HTML version doesn't seem to be turning up for me. A pity, I'd really like to play it. Using Linux Firefox.
@Blinkenlights sorry to hear that but there's probably nothing I can do about it :( you can still try to download the TIC-80 fantasy console (it's free) and load the cartridge (also downloadable from the itch page)
you can get the TIC-80 console here: https://tic.computer/create
Cool concept and what a great entry, from graphics to controls & sounds & arcade style effects on the screen, almost perfect from my point of view, especially in compo mode. Congratz :rocket:
@MateCziner I tried it on the console (browser and native), and the console wouldn't start on either version. Perhaps TIC-80 requires something I don't have? Anyhow, an interesting concept, this TIC. I must investigate this further...
@saoi-games I didn't see it, but thanks for streaming it!
Pretty fun game. I like the sound effects and the graphics. Though the health of the balls wasn't really clear, and when I pressed next level at the end of level 1 it took me to level 1 again.
I love the game aesthetics :D
Wow, great entry to the theme. Love the graphics and sound. I found it very enjoyable and the controls were very intuitive, I like simple games like this but have depth and complexity. I just found it hard to understand why I would become defeated. But overall, great game!
incredible concept & use of the theme
@noxbuds thanks for pointing that out, fixed it.
This definitely one of my LD41 favorites. It represented both genres well and resulted in an incredibly fun and polished product. Great job!
Very fun! Breakout has always held a place in my heart since the GameBoy Alleyway game, and this is a great twist on it. The controls are pretty perfectly implemented - choosing the cards feels great and very satisfactory.
It does feel a bit random but I mean, that's the charm of Breakout. It also loses some of the breakout tension - juuust missing the red guy is not as satisfying juuust hitting the ball with a paddle.
This was very nice! Probably the best I've played from the compo.
I would prefer if the cards were plain movekits (not forcekits) and/or the balls completely stopped moving before I had to play my next card. No hard complains tho, good game
really cool game - love the idea.
The amount of work there ! Good Job !
Wow, you managed to achieve a really bright little game ! It's super polished, regarding both art and gameplay. It felt great to play and I can't think to something really problematic to tell you about, which is kind of rare for a jam game (EDIT : moreover for a compo !). The only thing perhaps (but maybe that's just me), the effect of the "shield" card seemed unclear to me. Anyway, congratulations for the good work !
really cool little game, I love that =)
This is the best card-game mashup I've played so far! Amazing job! The level of polish is impressive :)
Amazing graphical work here. The gameplay is really satisfying, but I found that spamming 'up' as fast as possible was the most effective strategy, since you'll end up with tons of extra balls in the playfield. That aside, great entry.
This was, in short, amazing! Probably one of the best uses of the theme I've seen so far. I had no clue that you could make card games like this, and it makes me want to see what other kind of games you can make using a similar hand system. While the audio was a bit of a low point, it's still an amazing entry for this LD!
@SkullPixel yeah the audio sux :( didn't really had time to do it justice, and I'm not too experienced at it to boot.
Well done entry. Graphics are amazing. Difficulty is waaay too high for me. Very good work. Really polished.
awesome! I like how easy is to play and understand the game.
Love the old mood in this, and surprisingly fun for two incompatible genres. Great job!
Loved it!
This is a very enjoyable breakout/card/turn-based thing. I somehow managed to cause it to crash on the first level by constantly selecting cards. It froze on me and I had to reload the page. I give it high marks for fun and would love to see more levels made for it.
So fun! I had a lot of fun playing this little game. I love the graphics and the way you used the theme. I really enjoyed playing it!
Amazing idea! I like the snipe cards and the slow time ones as well!
Very interesting concept that turned out pretty well! Nice artstyle too. Gameplay was a bit slow and frustrating at times but an overall good experience.
The concept behind the game is interesting. Unfortunately for me, the game was pretty easy to win and I could easily win a level by spamming the cards quickly. The graphics and audio are decent and it somewhat fits the game but I thought the graphics for the balls were too plain in my opinion. I liked the polish of the game mechanics in that sometimes the screen will shake a little bit when the ball hits something hard with a great speed. It made the ball feel "heavy". One modification that could make this game more fun and harder to win is to set a maximum card usage limit or even have a time limit to complete the level and a small time break between the usages of cards.
@D-Studios the hardest part for me in the compo was the decision to
A.) spend time on features, polish, and general quality
B.) spend time on making and testing content.
In the end I decided to spend much more on A. Setting an additional lose condition would have required to test it with every level to ensure that they remain winnable. Since there was no time for that, I've decided to make the mechanics exploitable. This way the player can 'rubber band' if he/she gets frustrated while trying to solve a level.
This was just a more safe way to go as much as fun is concerned with the limits of the compo. But it's totally something to fix post jam.
Really love the game, was just curious to see why you decided to make it with tic-80 instead of pico-8. I always thought that tic-80 was just a cheap rip-off, but it looks like it has more colors and a bigger screen. Might look more in to it, though I do like the restrictiveness of the pico-8
This is an awesome game. I don't even know how you managed to create/polish so much in 48 hours, even 16 levels. My only criticism is that you shouldn't be able to spam cards so fast, maybe a add minimum delay between uses. The only thing really missing is music but I give you pass for that one.
Yo, this is amazing. I love breakout type games, especially ones that add a unique twist. This was super fun and I genuinely hope to see you expand on the game.
@TimeLoad the more FC we have the better imo, it's good to have options. I choose TIC over PICO solely for the ability to be able to define my own color palette(s). But this has been the first time I used any FC, so I think I'll give PICO a shot too eventually.
the graphics are the best and I never saw these genres combined, so good job on this one
Played quite well and the slow down on the card selection stuff felt quite nice. Good job!
I really liked the graphics. The lines going very fast in the screen looked excellent. But was kinda difficult to control. But good game anyway, tons of action in it.
This game is super beautiful and super addictive. The art is simple and polished, the particle effects are wonderful (including the trail left behind by the ball), and the very few sounds used aren't amazing but are interesting enough and fit the game. It was a little difficult for me personally, but hey, i like a challenging game from time to time. I would FOR SURE play this on a mobile device. Great work!
This is a pretty neat premise. I like how the fast paced action of Arkanoid is balanced out by the slow paced decision making of a card game. Choosing the order in which to use the cards in my hand made for some difficult choices, keeping the gameplay involving throughout. The visuals are also very nice, as is the sound design, although the lack of music is a bit underwhelming. Still, this is a very good entry. Nice work!
Awesome game! Loved to play it
Outstanding! The graphics are brilliant, the enemies have a ton of character, the sound effects work extremely well, and the mechanics are very well-polished. I love how the game slows right down when it's time for you to make your next choice, allowing you to time your moves to snipe enemies. Very addictive. Probably one of the best games I've played all jam. I really need to give TIC-80 a go at some point.
One of my favorite games this LD! Surprisingly deep and playable, will definitely be coming back to play long after this LD wraps up :D
Love this game, incredible artwork and so juicy motion
Some good comments here summed up some of my thoughts. Nice menu control. Prevent card spam. Great concept, love the thought behind it - really think this could be a super fun game and encourage you to follow up on it.
Very good game! It's very hard but the art are very nice and the physics work great! GG to you ^^
Two styles that I like combined in a game, yeah ! The gameplay is hard to get at the beginning but what a cool idea ! Great submission for a compo, good job !
Saw this on Jupi's channel and came to play it specifically. Love this!
I really dug this game. It was nice to both play and look at. Well done!
Nice job
A really good mix of strategy and action, it was a challenge using the cards at the right time while avoiding the red blocks. I also liked the retro feel the visuals had. Great work.
Great idea, I had a lot of fun playing it!
Super cool idea and well executed, I liked the simple to learn hard to master elements of the cards and the complexity/madness introduced by multiple balls. I did however encounter a crash (read: hang): Untitled.png
Otherwise I had a lot of fun playing and it's always nice to see games made in fantasy computers :)
One of the best game I played during this ludum dare ! Nice job !
Super polished with an interesting idea and it was tons of fun! I thought it was really fun when you get extra balls
I love the look of it and it played really well. I was a little unclear on why I lost my first game, since it started on level 5 for some reason, but I figured it out once I started going through the levels normally. Very clever concept!
I really enjoyed the game, although it can be beaten by spamming, having an incentive for least amount of cards may be good to have. Anyways it had pretty well done screen shake and graphics as well as some interesting art and sounds added to the mix. Great work.
Oh my god, this a really impressive entry! I'm impressed by all the content you made, and the level of polish, in such a limited time frame. I was a first time TIC-80 user too, but my game is nowhere as good as yours!
The game is very fun, I love the different levels, and it's a good balance between arcade and strategic choices. Congrats on this wonderful entry!
Funny concept, cool mixture of genres. Very polished, great graphics and reasonable sounds.
I guess success is a little based on luck, which kind of cards you get. Well, if you don't get the right ones, you'll just have to use up the cards you have, it should be possible, so I don't think that's a big issue in this case.
Hey there, this was an amazing mix of genres, I think you did that very well. The graphics were excellent, the audio was excellent, the gameplay was fun. The only thing that I can think is even an issue at all, is the difficulty. It was very easy to lose. If you had any interest in curving that I would sat to have the red blocks come in a little bit later, less at the beginning and more towards the end. Because sometimes I would start and just lose ten to fifteen seconds later. Amazing work!
I really like the idea and visuals! Really fun game! Could use some kind of cooldown to prevent cards spamming.
Great take on the theme. Fun game, if a bit frustrating to play well.
Oh yeh verry funny game. Really good this idea of brick breaker with cards.
Very fun game idea. Execution is well done. Graphics and sounds are really good.
I found the game very hard without spamming the up key . Only reliable option I had against red blocks was to spam until I get more balls than there are red blocks.
Thanks for making this fun game! I enjoyed it a lot!
The only feedback I can leave is that the game is perfect. Congratulations! Art, gameplay, mechanics, etc. All beautiful!!! Very fun and challenging. Already won!!!
I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.
I hope you continue with the project.
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/witchs-escape
Wow!Amazing work!Outstanding! The game feel very polished! The art is pretty good and the mechanics are very entertaining! At firts it was the game objective was a bit unclear.Anyways amazing!Good work for 72 h :)
Here is our game if you want to try it! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/me-da-miedito-la-oscuridad-i-get-goosebumps-in-the-dark
Super cool and amazing! Really love the idea and it feels very nice! Sometimes I feel like I lost a ball without knowing why. At some other point, I killed every enemy present but wasn't claimed victorious.
Pretty well done, especially since it's a compo!
The game becomes crazy when you spam the cards.
Neat concept and executed well. One major problem is that there isn't any penalty for using your cards as fast as possible, so the best strategy is to just keep pressing up to use your cards as fast as possible. That way you'll get numerous extra balls going at the same time. It took me a little while to figure out that the red ones are the ones that you're supposed to avoid, instead of the skulls.
Extremely innovative and overall an amazing game. I can't believe this isn't a JAM game instead, and even then it would have been an amazing feat. Great job!
Nice job! If you change anything https://gas-stationsnearme.com/open-24-hours/ about the game in the future, I would say a dash indicator is the way to go, I wasn’t sure whether I was about to blast off into space or just do a little hope. Best of luck getting all the ratings you need!
