LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Dark Soil by Pietro Ferrantelli 2018-04-30T05:25:25Z

Really great idea for a game! damn!

Type Fighter: Turbo by megamasterx 2018-04-24T02:25:13Z

I actually really like typing games and this would probably actually be helpful for learning to type!

Twin Stick Town by patrickgh3 2018-04-29T01:59:07Z

Wow! I think this game is extremely under-played. Really, this is the most polished experience iv'e had yet. I loved every aspect and wouldn't change a thing, only add to make it even better. The art style is simple and brilliantly colored, the music and sound effects fit very well, the movement was solid, shooting enemies felt very satisfying, and town building was quick and easy to understand. Honestly, i would take this even further into the realm of rogue-likes. I would very much love to build towards something greater or upgrade my person after i play through and lose. This is a game that i would definitely buy if there was an end goal and had more content. Superb work!

Dachshund League by Lorthal 2018-04-26T21:44:13Z

First of all, the cat head with goggles as a ball is hilarious, i really like the centaurs around the arena, and the music fits well within the game. This is a great couch game to chill and play with friends. Obviously it is similar to rocket league (which is one of my favorite games), but this is the first spin-off i have played that is actually fun to play. I really like being able to rocket jump, but not being able to move while in the air made it almost useless. Also it could just be my bad aiming skills, but it seems like the ball could have been a little bigger as it was difficult to get it to go anywhere near where i wanted it to go. Overall a great experience!

Poker-Man : Arcade + Poker by lavwa 2018-04-24T02:16:38Z

I really like how the ghosts are in a mad scramble around the room, really funny idea... I think the character sticks a little too much to walls and corners, and its a little hard to understand at first... but its pretty creative.

GHOST JOB by paulhocker 2018-04-26T20:42:05Z

Neat idea! I enjoyed the art style, and the music complimented it pretty well. Pretty easy to win because you can just button mash, but still decently fun to play. I also agree with max's comment, adding that 1 rule would make for a more in depth experience. Lastly, i would have liked to see different shapes (maybe tetris piece-like shapes?) for the area of spook affect besides just bigger or smaller squares. Good work!

The Heat Of Battle by hexagore 2018-04-26T23:36:07Z

The idea behind this game is really inventive, i think you nailed the theme right on the head. I felt like each of the characters in the war zone had personality and it was enjoyable to get to know them. The times where you were in the happy bunny zone felt short, but sweet and helped give a sense of progression. Every sprite animation is beautiful, and the music fit the game extremely well, and didn't get boring or repetitive. My only problem was the wall jumping being a little glitchy in places, and being able to go out of bounds if you jump the wall on the left in the war zone. Really good job!

Agreed! Please include link!

A Tale of Comedy and Tragedy by jelch 2018-04-29T04:57:50Z

This is a really cool game! The art style is weird but i like it a lot, and the theater aspect is very neat. The music is spot on and good to listen to, the puzzles were well designed and kept me interested, and i really dug the humor. I experienced a few glitchy bits: The first is while i am holding the urn and trying to push a block, the block will get stuck to me and move as i do, lucky this can be fixed easily by jumping or setting the urn down, this also happens if you run into it at odd angles like the very top of it, or by getting pushed into the block by a moving platform. Second, if there is a non-moving semi-solid platform close the ground, walking near it will mess up the players movement a bit, allowing you to walk on nothing (only while still near the platform). Third, I think it may be impossible to advance text with the controller, but everything else with the controller worked fine. All said and done, this is a wonderful and cute game. great job!

Feed the Beat by Benstar 2018-04-29T04:16:51Z

This is a really well polished and fun to play game! The music is insanely good and doesn't get old while playing, the sound effects work very well, (although i would consider shortening or softening the sound when hitting a note and also adding a small sound to make hitting a note perfect apparent), the art is REALLY good to look at (especially the cute girl), and it is easy to play without prior experience. Really nice game!

Idleshot by boaheck-artgent 2018-04-26T22:44:30Z

Super fun game with awesome sound design! i loved all the bright colors and simple looking terrain. Exploring felt really good and the menu system worked well. Great work!

Click Race by JustinM 2018-04-29T00:44:02Z

This is a really cool concept! I completely agree with the previous comment on diverging platforms, i feel like it would add some nice depth to this project. Another suggestion would be to have to switch to the right mouse button or even the scrolling function for added variety. I really like that this is a race as well. Without that aspect, i would not have felt as compelled to finish, plus being able to race my friends and beat eachother's times gives it some replay-ability. Good call on that! The art style is very pleasing to the eye, and i had no trouble with movement of the bird. Only thing it needs is some music and sound effects. Great Game!

Dungeonball by Gurbx 2018-04-26T23:52:01Z

This game was surprisingly fun, and had just enough challenge to keep it interesting. the sound effects weren't amazing, but it did feel really good to wack those eye balls out of existence. The art style is simple, but works well and got the job done. Honestly i wanted more levels to keep playing. If you made this into a full game i would buy it for sure. Only thing i would have added is a par and scorecard for each level. Awesome job!!!

Swap Swamp by Le Slo 2018-04-24T21:21:07Z

Really good. art is fun and the music is chill as fuck

Turn-Based Invaders from Space! by HacksawUnit 2018-04-27T04:19:45Z

Another really solid game hacksaw! The art and sound design is great and compliments each other. Controls are simple and easy to understand, polish is on point, and man does blasting away those ships feel good. You nailed the theme dude, great game!

Yum Some!! by frostByte4k 2018-04-24T21:27:13Z

I really like the concept, my carrots fell through the pan and made me lose, but it is pretty complete compared to most games.

Opposing Worlds by Particles GameStudio 2018-04-24T21:08:03Z

The fact that your boomerang can miss you and fly behind you is really awesome, but i kept getting stuck on the ground

Maze Ship by GeroX 2018-04-27T04:01:48Z

Pretty neat idea! kind of a mundane game, but hey, combining two incompatible genres is hard, and you did it. I agree with most of the complaints already written, accept i feel like the ship halting when touching a wall helped with getting through tight spaces. I think the flame behind the ship was really pretty, and the text boxes and font were really pleasing to the eye. Nice work!

Zenmaku by Gregor 2018-04-29T01:06:59Z

What a beautiful game! The art and sound work perfectly together, and the long pretty trail i accumulated by the end was very satisfying and mesmerizing to look at. It was easy to understand, pick up and play, and zone out to the colors. I was able to bounce myself out of the play area by getting hit into it, but i'm glad that i wasn't getting automatically pushed back in as that would have been pretty annoying, so good call on that (if it was intentional). The only problem i had was with the yellow enemies--they seemed like they were firing off their bullet pattens just a tad bit quick, and took me quite some time to get that last one i had left. I think you did a fantastic job with the theme. Great game!

Think Before Escape by acoto87 2018-04-29T03:32:47Z

This is a really neat idea! It's weirdly more strategic than i first thought, and the art style is simple, yet elegant. I liked that there was minimal sound to emphasize the metronome, but it got a little annoying after a while. Personally, i would change it to a softer sound. My only real problem was when i encountered the room with two helicopter enemies accompanied by a moving platform over a pit. Took me nearly forever to get past it. Seems like the copters have a little too much range, or at least they snipe you out a little too good. All said and done a great game!

ACCIDENTAL EXISTENTIAL by slovnoslomo 2018-04-29T03:52:43Z

You know, it's works like this that further instill the fact that games are an art form and should be whatever you want them to be. The more i played, the more i felt like i was experiencing a piece of art. I felt many odd and conflicting emotions in each section that were greatly enhanced due to the amazing sound design. The game was also easy to pick up and play, and the simple art style worked in it's favor. A+ Game, you absolutely nailed the theme.

VRn't by Michael Clavell 2018-04-24T21:04:00Z

This game is hilarious, my favorite part was the sound design... concept is really good.

Don't look at Greg by hankworx 2018-04-27T00:14:03Z

If you goal wasn't to creep me the heck out in this game, i have deep concern for you as a person. I'm not quite sure how much fun i had playing this, but it was interesting and weird enough for me to keep playing until i felt i had nothing left to do. i love the flat characters and how they seemed to be creeped out by greg too. really nice pixel art and sound design as well.

Typographythm by Radnyx 2018-04-29T05:39:39Z

Great job making the MOTHER of all rhythm typing games. Seriously, i love this game and you not only paid homage to some of the best games ever made, but you did it with class and style, and you totally nailed the theme. There is not a single problem with this game in my opinion. It's weird as hell, the backgrounds are insanely cool to look at, the music is absolutely sickening(in the good way). Also it's an incredibly under-played game--I thought i would see way more feedback. This is HANDS DOWN my favorite game i have played and will play for this jam. Thank you for making this, you deserve ALL the respect... Please make more.

Super Slime Slasher Ultra by sebastianscaini 2018-04-24T21:15:46Z

This game is awesome! voice acting rocks and the camera angle shifting is great.

Rockin' Horse by niterich 2018-04-24T02:22:37Z

Music is hilarious, i think the game is pretty funny but it feels like mario kart ice kinda

Love Is A Battlefield by F1Krazy 2018-04-27T03:43:34Z

Noooo!!! i can't believe she thinks i'm just like all the others! :( This is a hilarious combination or genres in my opinion and i thought it was a pretty neat game. Really simple and easy to understand, and above all else fun! This would make for a great phone game. Nice work!

Rhythm Racing by Sammy6 2018-04-24T21:54:15Z

That was fun! was difficult at first until i got the hang of it and the music was sick. Really good work!

Beet Boy by Ryan Bishop 2018-04-24T20:09:34Z

@megamasterx Thanks for your overwhelmingly positive feedback! We worked our absolute hardest and i'm glad you enjoyed it!

@niterich It was pretty hard to keep the mechanic feel fresh throughout the game. Looking back on it i now, i definitely agree about the graphics being hard to tell apart at times. Also which browser did you play it on? Only time i had problems was when i was using Safari.

@Procrastinaaaa Glad you liked it. I'm well aware of that pesky bug. Ran into it last minute and had no time to fix, but oh well.

@rekeben Sorry about lag. I'm good at coding, but not making it run well and efficiently. As for the camera jitter, I wanted the camera to follow slightly behind the player, but it doesn't work so well when zoomed in so much, as it kinda snaps to each pixel as it moves for some reason.

@noumenus definitely a weird mechanic to get used to, i tried hard to teach what i could with gameplay. I'm really glad you found the secret room, i was slightly scared that no one would be adventurous to get there. We worked vigorously on those animations. Appreciate the love.

@Bitten-Toast-Games Sorry about the camera dude! I will make it a lot different and easier on the eyes next time.

@imod Thank you for your kindness :)

@Le-Slo The chest and getting extra hearts is super glitchy. Made it last minute and it does not work right at all, it was just supposed to increase max health. All of the enemies (including skull guy) were last minute and i didn't have any time to polish them. I had the same thought about him needing more than just a sound when you hurt him. The secret room is a big room with lots of platforming and no enemies just for fun. When you exit, it takes you to the same room as the other door after the skull guy. The crouching is most definitely the best animation, thank you for noticing! really glad you liked the art. as for the key room bug: the side scrolling player and top down player are two separate objects that are supposed to be destroyed when switching states. for some reason the corners of the area where the key is cause an array of problems when trying to move through them. encountered it last minute and had no time to fix.

Thank you all for your feedback so far, the two of us really appreciate it. This was our first game jam and first actual full project we have completed together (and my first time using Game Maker Studio 2). Overall our biggest issue was an over-estimation of time. I absolutely cannot believe we were able to make this much content and pretty much everything we planned on.

Beet Boy by Ryan Bishop 2018-04-27T04:50:43Z

@rush Glad you enjoyed, thanks for playing!

@nbickford Thank you! Glad you were able to find your way into the most fun part of the game! (inside the walls)

@GiraffeCat Thanks! i'm surprised by the amount of content too. It felt like my brain was going to explode by the end. Sorry about skully, 25 hits was a bit much, especially when there is no hit animation.

@thomaz96 Glad you enjoyed, thanks! We thought long and hard of how to make the concept be fun.

@paulhocker Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked the fruit, we needed that extra little mechanic for the game to feel full in my opinion, and im happy it worked!

@lum I'm so happy you enjoyed the fruit inventory, it was pretty difficult to get the fruit to follow the player and switch around without looking clunky. Sorry about that bug. You may have accidentally duplicated the character in a specific spot, but not noticed, because it was in the exact place of the original character, then when you enter a door, it fudges up the whole game. thanks for playing!

@Autumnotopia Thank for trying it out and leaving a comment even though you didn't get to play much. sorry about that. I'm not sure how to include a download version.. Although now that i think about it, i may not be able to. With the version of Game Maker Studio 2 i have, i can only export to HTML5

BIRKANOID by MateCziner 2018-04-29T03:11:36Z

This game is super beautiful and super addictive. The art is simple and polished, the particle effects are wonderful (including the trail left behind by the ball), and the very few sounds used aren't amazing but are interesting enough and fit the game. It was a little difficult for me personally, but hey, i like a challenging game from time to time. I would FOR SURE play this on a mobile device. Great work!

RoguePets by Lodugh 2018-04-26T22:09:15Z

This is really easy to pick up and play, and a good idea for a game. The art style is cute, the sound effects fit well, and the music is REALLY well done. I had no problem with the difficulty, but i can see why some people have issues with it. Most fun game iv'e played so far, awesome work!

Gender Circles by EkkoEkko 2018-04-29T04:27:57Z

This is a very neat and simple idea. It reminds me a lot of old flash games i played and got addicted to as a kid. The music is really good and i like the voice for advancing in waves. I feel like there's something about this art style that fits the game and it's theme perfectly. Yet another great game that i think could work well on a mobile device!

KEYBOARD WARRIOR by croewens 2018-04-24T21:22:46Z

I played a lot of teaches typing games back in the day to learn to type and I think the world could use more fun games.

The Colossal Carrot Caper by rush 2018-04-24T02:28:28Z

I am pretty impressed with the 3d landscape that you've created, it kinda blows my mind.. I also think that the wolf is a little cheap, and it could use some animations for sure!

Bullets of Insight by notgreat 2018-04-29T01:33:34Z

This is such a crazy idea, and you pulled it off rather nicely. There's definitely some real strategy behind staying alive for a long time. I started off thinking it was easy, but then quickly escalated into having to think about where i would end up in space and where the next bullet i had to dodge was. Very cool implementing a score based on proximity to the bullets as well. I felt like getting a high score was only part of the reward for playing well, as the replay option was very satisfying to see afterwards. (Also impressive bit of code!) The only gripes i had was the visual inconsistency, and the music not fitting too well with the game-play (not to say i wasn't a fan of the music). All-in-all a sweet game that would fit perfectly on a mobile device.

Raucous Raccard by noumenus 2018-04-24T03:11:37Z

Really cool idea! It was a little confusing at first, but once i figured out how the tickets affected me i started having fun. I feel like with enough work, this could sell easily. My only complaint is not being able to grab a different ticket when i'm already holding one, or just being able to put it back.

Super Platformer RPG by Silent Tower Games 2018-04-29T04:03:49Z

This is a solid game and i love the concept. The art and sound design is minimal and work very well together, but could definitely use some music. The movement feels good, but the jumping and falling spreed is quite fast. Even without adding any content, this would make a decent game to play on a mobile device. Great work!

Desert Fishing by nbickford 2018-04-26T21:11:46Z

First off, i gotta say that menu screen nearly gave me chills. The way the music starts off sounding mysterious and adventurous during the pan up over the sand, and then shifts to being really intense and almost off-putting. It's hard to put it into words, but it felt really special. The lighting and particle effects looked gorgeous and really made me feel like i was alone in this huge barren desert. As for the game play, i feel like it doesn't matter what i say. This is one of those games where your actions, and the consequences or rewards you get from them, are almost like lessons to be interpreted differently from anyones perspective. Although it was confusing at first, i found this game to be profoundly meaningful. Really solid work!
