I'm like you checkpoint system here. Yey1.PNG
@parkinje enemy health intentionally doesn't reset. Thanks for the feedback!
@Serious07 thanks, the checkpoint system was a late addition
I love this it's awesome
I love this. The platforming and the turn-based fights are solid.
I enjoyed this really much! 10/10 mate.
Loved the graphics, jumping felt a bit weird
Very neat - love the graphics!
Well done. Tight controls
Neat game! Some of the jumps were pretty tough, but as you gain exp you get better at them too! More of a sampling between the two genes but was done pretty well. The fights weren't anything impressive and got repetitive but good job.
@Fanttum I appreciate the praise & critique. If I end up making something more out of this concept, I'll focus on improving the platforming and balancing out the RPG elements.
Really liked the game overall. I think something extra might be needed to make the combat more fun. But I the combination of genres was fantastic.
I really like the quick reload after death. I let me keep in the game and not worry so much about dying. I'm not sure what exactly psych was for.
The minimal art style made me really happy! I'd love to see this developed further. But for players like me, maybe the jumps could be made a little less tight? Haha. I see in one of the comments here that enemy health doesn't reset if you get beaten in a fight. That's good news, because being sent back to a checkpoint (with really hard jumps) after losing a fight is what made me quit the game! Overall a great job, keep making games!
I like the text, it's minimal but I laughed.
Didn't get very far in the game @Silent Tower Games!, however I did find the condept and gameplay rather fun! My biggest complaint is that I can't platform worth anything with the arrow keys... having the jump button seperate from the movement keys, would greatly benefit the platforming, as the jumps are quite precise. (The RPG aspect isn't too special, but it worked, and that's something!) ;)
I like the minimalistic graphics.
I like the silhouette style graphics and the turn by turn combat/ platforming. But that jump needs to be a little less snappy.
Pretty good game! The turn based fighting was a lovely choice.
Also the jumping made me rage a little! hahah
Awesome Idea and style! Great job!
Overall great aesthetic and feel. I had difficulty lining up the jumps, and in a couple places the design forced my character out of screen when I'd rather be able to judge my trajectory.
I won the game - i really enjoyed it. The platforms was position perfectly (reminds me to mega man) and the combat system was cool.
Well i didnt realize what "phsychic" had a sense (i thinkt its for fun :) but overall a really cool game.
Great game, though the health reset whenever you fell of a cliff, so potions were worthless. Also enemy health didnt reset.
This game is a lot of fun!
Overall well-constructed. Feels like the vertical speed is a bit too high maybe? With some jumps as dangerous as they are, checkpoints could stand be a bit more generous without feeling too easy. Having to go into each fight multiple times feels a bit strange, but I understand wanting to force the player to redo platforming sections. Maybe if the player could jump over incoming attacks, and do it all in one go?
Really nice :-)
@steve-sparkes Thanks for the praise! :D I will keep making games! As for the tough jumps, I agree that it can be frustrating. It was just a fast way to make engaging levels. If I take this concept farther, there will probably be a lot more range in the difficulty.
@Handle good point about jumps being cut off by the screen. If I use this concept for a more serious game, I'll make sure that isn't an issue. Thanks for the feedback!
@neowhoru Thanks for playing! The "psychic" ability lets you see the enemy's health bar.
@CrispyPear I agree that health regeneration from falling death sort of throws off the balance. If I spend more time on the game, that's one of the things I'd like to fix. I appreciate the feedback!
@bitjester-media I agree that the jumping/vertical speed could feel better. If I take this project farther, I'll spend a lot more time ironing out issues like the jumping speed, as well as the other things you mentioned. More balanced battles, a way to dodge attacks, perhaps a different checkpoint system altogether, etc. Thanks for playing!
Like the platforming and the simplicity of the game but im unsure what "phychic" does. Good overall game!
I love the artstyle, it's simple and really good. Battle system was ok, nothing special but works well. I think some jumps were too hard but that's maybe just me. Overall great combination of RPG and platformer.
This was quite enjoyable! I feel like it could have used some sort of ambience in the background in lieu of music, but this was a good mix of challenge and mechanics. Well done!
I like the simple graphics. Some of the jumps were made a bit more difficult due to the falling speed being a bit too fast IMO. Perhaps lowering or limiting it would make it a bit more forgiving. I liked the sequencing of the battles too and I think that adding some more characters and items would be a great way to go if you plan on further development. Nice job.
Nice job, simple and smouth. Almost every LD game have sound issues, try to make it less loud. Overall i enjoyed.
This is great! Some of those delayed jumps got me HARD for awhile. Thanks for the game!
I really like the dialogues before the combat, I have some issues with the platform mode
This is very fun, i liked that you didn't make me have to start over the hole game when i died. Platforming and turnbased nice combo.
I wish the two parts of the game came closer better but overall nice aesthetics.
I like it! Though the gravity is too high for me, it makes the platforming harder than perhaps it was meant to be.
The RPG system is integrated well, but it's a bit simplistic, you just use strong attack > weak attack > strong attack > weak attack over and over. The platforming section was also kind of annoying since the jump is so short.
The art style is nice, but it could probably use some music or something.
Pretty classic game play. Still a nice first LD.
The jumps are *always* precision jumps and the penalty for failing them is always death and the controls were so tight they were practically strangling me. More checkpoints and lower gravity please! (same jump height, but slower vertical speed)
Overall well-constructed. The RPG system is a little bit weak as there is much repetition. It also feels like the jump speed is might be a bit too high? I messed up plenty of jumps  Is there any reasoning behind respawning the enemies after you've killed (when you fuck up a jump for example)?
@croewens Thanks for the feedback! I agree that the RPG system could be stronger, and the jump feels weird.
As for the checkpoint system, when you die it restarts you where you won your last fight. Enemies don't respawn, and if you lose a fight to an enemy, it does not regain any health when you die so it's easier to defeat.
The gameplay feels a little rough and unpolished, but the game idea is cool.
Nice game. Love the art style. Bit annoying dying starting almost all over(i'm bad at platformers). Cool Concept.
Not sure what I think about the forced deaths, but the systems work as intended and the game sucked me in more than I thought it would
Wow! simple colour palate similar to my game! Check it out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/platscii
Oh, platforming with turn-based rpg looks fresh anf unique =) Nicely done concept!
Great example of how minimalistic graphics work perfectly if you know how to use them. Gameplay was very smooth and enjoyable. The concept itself isn't so surprising, but the execution made it look original and really great.
A fun idea that works really well in practice, and very nicely made! I'm absolutely rubbish at platforming though, so I didn't get to the end. Would've liked a little chip-set music to go with it though...
Pretty neat idea! I liked how the platforming worked - it felt smooth and responsive. Great job on that part.
The nitpick I have is that the fights were pretty repetitive and I was just hoping them to end so I could get back to platforming. I still like the idea though. With some more thought and dept in battles this game could have some potential!
Very good idea
Neat idea. Reminded me of Paper Mario, everything was smooth until lvl 3 jumping section... i fell down that bit just by 1 pixel.
I did find a bug in the area with the S after lvl 3 there's no hitbox in 1 specific wall not sure if its intentional or not
And the checkpoint system was the best part of it Super Platformer RPG.PNG
I really liked the 1 bit graphics (with the occasional extra color thrown in). The sound fit the mood of the game well and I enjoyed it.
I would have liked some additional options for combat or maybe a way to reduce or avoid the damage like in Paper Mario. Some of the platform elements were difficult and it sometimes frustrating to get through a hard area only to have the enemy roll a 6 and kill you in two hits.
Nicely done!
Really fun, the platformer was tight, with good controls. The 1 bit art (for the most part) is great too. Good job!
You can check it out mine (another platformer): https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/think-before-escape
@acoto87 I played yours the other day. Good game!
The only problem I have is that the jump sound is a bit grating. Otherwise great!
Lovely game! I love the graphics.
Very nice experiment, altrough I don't think the genres really match well (but the theme was "incompatible genres", so I guess thats not a bad thing, haha!) For me personally, the turn based part bothered me a bit, since I greatly enjoyed the dynamic of the platformer. Could probably work after some adjustments. Still a nice entry.
I like the clean graphics, and the platforming was fun! If maybe a little bit too frustrating. I didn't really get what was a good or bad strategy in the turn based parts.
Pretty good! Platforming was tight, though the gravity was a bit much. The turnbased sections were confusing, I kind of just chose combinations until they worked.
It's a neat idea, but the RPG elements seem very basic. Psychic isn't really needed since all you can do is attack to begin with, so you won't need to think about using health items or defending, the only thing to do is to just use hit when you can and jump when you can't. Expand the RPG elements and maybe add a bit more nuance to the platforming and you could have a really great game.
The minimal graphics work really well here, as does the combination of the two genres. I had the freakin' hardest time getting past the first jump (where you grab the potion), but after that I was on a roll! I will say that I got my ass kicked quite a bit by enemies, but the solid mechanics kept me coming back for more. My only cons are that the difficulty was a bit high, and I would have loved some music to aid me in my quest. Great entry!
Simple yet entertaining.
The idea of combining a platformer with a turn based rpg is great, but I feel that this game fumbles the execution. The platforming and combat are both overly simplistic and one doesn't really contribute towards the other, the game just sort of alternates between being a platformer and being an rpg without much crossover outside of the health pickups you can find during the platforming sections. That being said, alternating between action focused platforming and strategic combat does give the game good pacing. Also, I like the little characters' design and animations, plus the black and white contrast is striking. This entry could be much better, but it is solid overall. Nice work!
I think this game had interesting and entertaining gameplay mechanics. I do wish that the gravity of the jumps in the platformer parts was not so strong, as the player fell too fast and it kind of made jumping to platforms hard. I did like how the audio, the simple graphics, and the dialogue fit together. I wish that the controls of the game were listed somewhere (either in game or in the description of the game) as I was initially confused a little bit on how to play. Overall, it was a great simple game that was fun to finish.
Funny concept, it remind me a bit of Paper Mario, where you have to jump on goombas in a RPG gameplay. Some platforms are quite difficult though ^.^
This is a solid game and i love the concept. The art and sound design is minimal and work very well together, but could definitely use some music. The movement feels good, but the jumping and falling spreed is quite fast. Even without adding any content, this would make a decent game to play on a mobile device. Great work!
Nice 1-bit graphics! Matching music would've benn great. The two genres are present and work together for the user experience. A little bit of context would help to give these little guys a purpose to defy each other. Nice platforming level design. Good work!
The graphics and the game mechanics are great. The phisycs of falling is a little bit weird. Great job!
awesome work, a lot of fun to play and i appreciated the art style!
This is a really neat idea with really charming graphics. I may have missed something, but I was wondering if there was some way to apply the level ups to additional skills. Besides that, very cool. Great job!
Nice game! This is kind of a rage game, and that should be mentioned. I had an enjoyable time playing it, as this is a pretty innovative game and fit the theme very well. As for the graphics, they were simple but charming. Would have liked to hear a bit more audio (sound effects and music alike). The mood was set as a simple 8-bit game from the start and that feeling stuck all through the gameplay. Pretty solid entry!
@CalebLewis I appreciate for the feedback. I think adding a defense system could be a big improvement to the game. If I take the idea further, I plan on doing something like that. Thanks!
@Jamblefoot Thanks for playing! As for your question, when you level up, it just increases the effectiveness of your attacks. If I make this into a full game, there will definitely be a more robust RPG section.
Excellent jam game and nice mashup. I would pay for a fully fleshed game like this.
Very enjoyable.
This was a good effort, I feel like the platformer and rpg elements themselves were a little lackluster, but together it made for a fun experience. It was just the right length to get the most out of it.
Nice little entry. Simple, clean, cool. Lot of fun with such minimalist game really. Well done :)
No chance I can complete the game without raging
Really cool entry! The jumps felt a little bit weird at first, so maybe it would be a good idea to have a second look at those. Other than that the design is clean and minimalistic. Very enjoyable :)
A really solid game with nice retro graphics. Good job
I liked but it's very hard! There is how to pass the second monster without to die? :D
The minimalist graphics are nice, and the idea of blending platforming and turn based RPG's has a lot of promise!
Though I have to agree with @superpokeunicorn that these elements just seem to separate from one another. It would actually be a pretty simple fix to blend what you have. Perhaps the health in combat and platforming could be shared, so your performance in one phase has dramatic consequences in the other.
I also think the jump can use some work. As is, the jump height is very high but the gravity is way too heavy. You have almost no time to correct yourself in air to reach the next platform because you're being pulled down so fast. It honestly might feel better to reduce the jump height and the gravity. It would make the jumps have a longer arch and give more control in the air. Either that, or a short double jump can let players recover in air. Players that enjoy hardcore platforming tend to prefer forgiving controls but brutal level designs.
Overall a very clean build, would love to see where you take it post jam!
Its fun and a cool concept but i feel labelling what different numbers meant and how the game worked wouldn't of gone a miss. Good job though!
Cool concept, challenging enough though the RPG part of the game seems to work by simply ramming the opponent instead of proper strategy fights. However, it's more of a mechanic choice than a flaw, as I do understand that time is limited when it comes to adding strategy features. The game itself plays well, and it's solidly polished, congrats!
Yooo props for the pure js, thats how I make my games as well. It reminds me of paper mario lol As some people have mentioned, the platforming physics could use some tweaking, the jump arc happens too fast and it makes it frustrating.
I beat it! fun game, I like the platforming the movement felt really good. for the combat i never felt it was necessary to check his help always just attack first and jump when its on cd. Great game, awesome to see other developers using js.
I'm sure this game reminds me of Valkyrie Profile.
Cute game, well executed and a fun take on the theme!
The game, however, as it is right now is quite boring. The combat, unless I've misinterpreted something, is mindless and the platformer is quite mindless as well. Missing a jump gives me a sort of annoyed feeling; that I didn't something wrong, it's the game that a tad too fast, I'd say. 10-20% slower overall (movement, jump, fall) would probably feel better (I know this is hard to balance when you spend loads of hours testing your own game).
Other than that, it's a really neat game. It looks great, sounds great and runs great/smooth. It's has some great and polished features that really defines the game. And playing games made with javascript just gives me a great feeling.
Feel free to check out my web "game" [Story Collab](shttps://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/story-collabs), I'm in dire need to ratings!
Well cool this combination. Although I think it was practically a game of turn, but I enjoyed playing a lot.
I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.
I hope you continue with the project.
