I think that the mixe genre isn't to present. Maybe if you type types of attacks, you could made combos like " punch punch fireball" doknow :/ But the idea of a typing game is cool. Graphs are really great. And its rajing xD

lurkinmcclerkin 2018-04-23 20:49

Ty for your feedback. That was the original plan, but we chose to make it feel more like a Typing Test Game / Fighting Game. That would have been more akin to a text-based RPG which we saw a lot of people doing. But I do like that idea.

dalbinblue 2018-04-23 21:37

This game looks and sound great, but the place of the game is very slow. I spent a very long time typing on the first round and while I can type pretty fast, took a lot of typing to cause damage. Additionally, in the second round after the first or second block of text, and at the end it wouldn't progress to the next block, so I just had to sit there and watch my character get slaughtered.

benskca 2018-04-23 21:38

The design of the player and the opponent fighters is really cool and I like the overall aesthetic of the game a lot, the soundtrack complements the design really well and the announcer gives it a nice arcade-y vibe - that said, while the fighting game aesthetic is definitely there, I don't think the gameplay really extends into the second genre that much.

megamasterx 2018-04-23 21:41

@dalbinblue That was due to a bug in the second round exclusively. This has been fixed and a new build has been uploaded.

dalbinblue 2018-04-23 21:41

@megamasterx Pulling it down now.

dalbinblue 2018-04-23 21:50

Okay, I got through round two now, barely... after that round it said press space to continue, but wouldn't continue. It looks like from your description above that may be the entire game though?

megamasterx 2018-04-23 22:00

@dalbinblue That's a miss on my part; Enter completes that dialog just like round 1. Well played! I'm tuning the enemy health down and have replaced a build once again. Thank you so much for taking time to let me know what's going on.

javasaurus 2018-04-23 22:16

Amazing style and interesting game ! I can easily see this becoming a networked game (the same vein as TypeRacer), good stuff ! :)

angelbait 2018-04-23 22:19

I now need a pair of "ASDF" fighting gloves... Thank you for making such a fun game!

ryan-bishop 2018-04-24 02:25

I actually really like typing games and this would probably actually be helpful for learning to type!

mowztouch 2018-04-24 03:35

haha nice concept, well done! ;)

slimothyj 2018-04-24 04:01

This is brilliant! I usually type like a champ but this game ruined me. The art is brilliant and the music is great too. If I had one criticism it would be that the fighting sounds dont sound very impactful. More like a light slap. Perhaps give them more "oomf". Overall great game. One of the best I've played tonight :)

yuukimakoto 2018-04-24 04:26

The art style in the game looks great! We have also make a typing game in LD41. We spent more time on the typing part to make it have some more clarity(the word you need to type will be blinking, we also add some different typing mode). And maybe you can raise the exit time in enemy's animation to make the punch stronger?

oldshrimpeyes 2018-04-24 05:17

OK... I get it... I'm a rubbish typist :(

Stylish, simple and fun. Recovering from errors was a little unforgiving, but then it is a typing tutor, so fair play there. It could easily lend itself to some advanced typing combos, or bonus finishing sentences if you're blisteringly fast, but it's a well realised game. Kudos :)

spanner 2018-04-24 15:55

Download isn't working... I'd love to try it though EDIT: Nevermind... I was using an old version of the link.

unentokku 2018-04-24 16:16

Nice, not sure if timing typing the words so that you don't finish while you're being hit matters but if it does that's pretty interesting. I wonder if having choice between attack and defense words would have been interesting.

2018-04-25 11:18

Neat game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 41 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPm7OCu9cQ8

gamesplusjames 2018-04-26 00:51

I loved the artstyle in this and typing felt nice and pressured during the fight. I'd love to see what else you could do with this one if you had a little more time but what you have here was really cool! Great work! :)

rocktavious 2018-04-26 03:00

Really interesting combo, i think it works pretty well together. My only feedback would be to have some sort of UI element that shows which place on the text you are at - sometimes i would get off and not know where i am (at a space or something) and then all my typing became off because i was 1 character ahead of where i thought i was or 1 character behind - this disrupted my typing and made me lose more :(

stending 2018-04-26 10:51

Neat visuals and sound! The concept and gameplay are simple but well done and work perfectly fine!

Mistake made me more frustrated than expected haha!

Nice entry :)

derlassehenrich 2018-04-26 13:58

I like the game idea. Personally it's a bit too difficult for myself, I only won the first battle... But I think, people who can type way faster than me, would love it even more. I mean, I love it, even if I'm bad. Well done, your game is amazing!

ben-grimm 2018-04-26 14:45

Nice game to train typing :D

The foreground visuals and the sound fx are outstanding.

linky439 2018-04-26 19:53

Great idea! Sounds strange but it works :)

Minor complains: it is sometimes hard to keep track of where we are while typing (especially when you're just 1 character ahead or late) and it truly seems like my opponent hit me way more time than I actually hit him, even during long combos

But overall, a strong entry, and the graphics are great. Congrats!

phil-busuttil 2018-04-27 12:56

Great idea for a theme, really well presented and the graphics are brilliant. But I think the execution felt a little flat and detached. I felt like I was just typing random words and the action on screen didn't reflect my progress. At times, I would mess up loads and my fighter would be hitting away, while other times I was on a roll, but my fighter only did the odd hit. If you had to type phases to do hits, with shorter/easier phrases equalling light punches and longer more difficult phrases landing critical hits, I think it would have felt more involved. On a side note, I really needed to know where I was in the current word, as occasionally I lost track at the end/beginning of a word and wasn't sure if I was on the space, or not.

sndr 2018-04-27 13:12

OSX version didn't work for me :(

megamasterx 2018-04-27 13:17

@sndr The Assets folder in the ZIP needs to be in the same directory as your .app folder in order for TF:T to work on OSX.

sndr 2018-04-27 13:24

@megamasterx I believe this is how I have them. (Enclosing screenshots cause maybe I'm doing something stupid) Screen Shot 2018-04-27 at 14.22.26.png

And this is what the screen looks like (after that animation where what I'm guessing is your logo fades in) Screen Shot 2018-04-27 at 14.22.13.png

megamasterx 2018-04-27 13:27

@sndr This was tricky. Our OSX tester managed to get it working by moving the folder inside the .app file I believe.. but that issue appears when the Asset folder is not in the right location. I apologize for this, but I'm not familiar with OSX in the slightest... I'll ask the OSX tester what he did and @ tag you as soon as I get a response if you'd like.

sndr 2018-04-27 13:32

@megamasterx Yeah, I'll be happy to test it if you guys can help me to start it! :)

spiffy 2018-04-27 19:53

Kind of felt like the typing was irrelevant to the fighting. I didn't know when or how I was getting punched or giving punched. However, sound is great, typing is fun, art is beautiful. Tight game is tight.

frankiesmileshow 2018-04-28 04:29

It was pretty good, but damn my handddds The warning at the start was Too Real

eduwhan 2018-04-28 15:31

Excellent entry. I can seriously see a lot of potential for cool game-play in this game. Music is nice and relaxed. A+

megamasterx 2018-04-28 23:13

@sndr osx setup.PNG This is an example of what our IOS tester has his structure set up like. Please let me know if you continue to have issues.

jessefreeman 2018-04-28 23:32

Nice mashup and liked the art style but it was a bit slow. A lot of typing for the first round and the thing I think was missing was showing where space was pressed. Sometimes I would get lost when typing quickly and didn't know if I was in a word or needed to hit space to move forward. Good job!

cristiano-m-garcia 2018-04-30 00:18

Good job! Cool game!

I really liked the art, but I think the game needs more rhythm. Putting some kind of combo would be interesting.

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

I hope you continue with the project.

Your interpretation of the game is amazing. The 2 genre is very incompatible and you combined it!!!!! Wow. Love it. Good job. 5 out 5!!! By the way i love also the graphics.

sebastianscaini 2018-05-02 23:13

It had really nice art!

Careful! Not all of us are using 16:9 resolution monitors (yes, I know I'm still in the stone age with my 1280x1024 desktop). Unity unfortunately only offers resolution settings that match your monitor's aspect ratio (even in windowed mode) and your UI wasn't authored to handle different aspect ratios, so none of the elements were positioned properly.

That aside, this was pretty simple yet fun. I'd echo the comments about showing the spaces (usually the current typing position is shown via a marker of some sort). Mistakes were more jarring than usual as normal typing challenges do allow you to correct mistakes, so I had to slow down a bit more every time that happened. The actual game was a walk in the park for me, but typing games are super weird in terms of game balance so I won't really speak more on that front.

Great presentation overall though :)
