The VFX are simple but effective, could have used some more juice but were clear nonetheless. One thing I felt lacking from this game was limitations. I could place as many blocks as I wanted and clear as many blocks as I wanted. This meant that there was very little decision making, mostly just "can I execute this fast enough?". I'd love to see cooldowns for both actions, would add some depth to the decision tree without adding more "content".

tejasvonly 2021-10-04 02:19

Nice and Simple game. The graphics are really good. The score says 0 after I die no matter how far I get(Web Build).

timeload 2021-10-04 02:30

@chris-dirkis Thanks for the feedback. In terms of limitations the idea of the game was there’d be many more different kinds of obstacles and it would be a balance of monitoring your player with your left hand and having to destroy enemies and place blocks with the right hand. More of a reflex thing than decision making, I just didn’t have the time to implement more complex obstacles.

@tejasvonly Thanks for the feedback. Oh no! The dying and score was a last minute rush job, knew I’d miss something :(

eriku 2021-10-04 02:40

Agreed with the above that it's too bad the score always shows zero, so it's hard to know how long you've lived, but I was somewhere around 2 minutes on my longest run. Simple but effective start to an endless runner game. Keep developing your skills!

the-neon-shark 2021-10-04 02:41

The visual style was enjoyable. Mechanically, I found it a bit tough to connect with though. Some feelings:

Some easy changes: - The "START" button really doesn't need to be a button at all. Clicking anywhere should be sufficient. The mouse hovering the button doesn't imply it's a button so no reason to add confusion. I must have clicked it by accident the first time, because on my second run I had no clue how to start!

- The SCORE at the end of my game was always 0, even if it was incrementing during the game.

- After dying, I'd want the game to reset on button press / click instead of waiting 4 seconds. That 4 seconds is unplayable and unfun time! Give the player control :)

Some harder changes: - Running "backward" felt very difficult and heavy. Consider making that feel more natural. I don't enjoy the feeling of not being in control of the player character.

- The block placement mechanic did feel quite right. For it be useful as a platform, you'd pretty much have to click exactly on the player character which doesn't seem to be the fun part of the mechanic. I'd frequently wiff past the block even when it was positioned pretty well. Maybe a button to spawn the block underneath the player and stop momentum could solve that... it really depends what the goal of the block-building is.

- I wasn't able to successfully interact with the red block due to frustration of the above issues. If I could reset the game faster, I'd probably give it a few more goes.

I agree with @the-neon-shark and was going to write up some of those things too but they put it better than I would have anyway. I liked the aesthetic a lot and LOVE the control scheme which is new and innovative in this context. This has a lot of potential thank you for making it and nice work.

ixchow 2021-10-04 04:19

Agreed, the itch.io page isn't working -- the URL also has "/edit/" in it. Perhaps there is a "publish" or "make public" button that needs pressing on itch?

timeload 2021-10-04 10:20

@eriku That's longer than any of my attempts haha and yeah, the big "Score: 0" was implemented with like 5 minutes left on the clock and I must've forgot to make that "0" dynamic and reflect the actual score.

@the-neon-shark Thanks for the points :) most of the points you have are basically things I would've done if I had more time. If I had more time there's a lot of things I could've added, but I knew I wouldn't be able to get anything done on the third day due to work so I submitted what I had to compo. For things like the "START" button, there was also meant to be other buttons for "TUTORIAL" and "CONFIGS" and it was meant to have an on hover effect. Just didn't have the time. Same as the reset button. And the controls I would've liked to narrow down. It's unfortunate you didn't have an easy time with the placing a platform and killing enemies. The whole point of the game is that later on in the levels there will be more enemies with more going on and it's a balance of controlling the enemy with you left hand, placing blocks as you need them, and killing enemies to stop from dying. So it's like a reflex/multi-tasking challenge. And with falling off blocks, if you hold down the jump button it will jump as soon as it hits a block. So all you need to do is place a block down roughly in the location where you think the player will be, then fine tune the landing position with A/D and hold onto the jump button so it bounces off the platform. But I really do appreciate the input, I'll take it all into account when I flesh it out into a real game.

@fabdynamic Glad to hear you liked the graphics and found the controls innovative. I was trying to think of ways to make a platformer that wasn't just a "move, jump, shoot" platformer, then I had the idea of killing enemies with clicking on them and placing down platforms. Eventually it turned into an infinite runner, but I'm thinking of going back to a fast-paced action platformer with a bit of Celeste-like puzzle elements (limited platforms you can place, multiple ways to finish each level, etc.)

@ixchow I made a comment earlier providing a link that works :) I accidentally copied the wrong link when I published the game for compo

marc-grabow 2021-10-04 14:23

The controls and visuals feel very slick - great work for such a small timeframe!

solah 2021-10-06 06:07

Pretty good game! Placing blocks is a cool idea and I really like the visual effect! I did not feel the unstability of the program that much though, maybe some heavier visual effects like glitches and power ups stopping to work for a few seconds when using them would add that little feeling and make the tension rise!

wyl-team 2021-10-06 07:34

the visuals are very nice and the gameplay is original, cool!

mrbell270 2021-10-06 16:26

Great work! Minimalistic style is always a trend :) Sound design is really fitting too.

Good luck, keep up making games!

mchs-productions 2021-10-07 09:09

Interesting game, the controls aren't perfect but the idea is there! 4/5

bluishgreenpro 2021-10-08 13:59

Simple but effective; I'd love to try playing this co-op so one player could focus on using the mouse while the other moved the character.

bridgeonastick 2021-10-09 15:08

Nice concept! It could definitely still use some polishing, but the main game loop is already there. The difficulty increases nicely over time, and the mechanics are interesting. Keep it up!

boon 2021-10-14 22:08

Fun little platformer. Coyote time would have saved me from most of my deaths but I guess that just takes getting used to. Nice shader for the retro scanlines, made the game feel like an old arcade game. Nice work!

j0ye 2021-10-18 16:26

The game looks amazing and the concept is pretty solid. The beginning is a bit slow for a high score grind. It would be cool if you could sprint through the easy part of the game and quickly get to the high score zone^^

python-b5 2021-10-19 02:24

Really liked the mood, almost a little creepy. Was a bit frustrating to play, but I think it has some potential!

Nice work :)

rhoka 2021-10-19 03:02

Good job. I know you ran out of time to add the things that you wanted but I've always found it helpful when you don't have enough time to add the things you want, really polish and punch up what you do have. I.E. a simple little chiptune playing in the background would really keep the energy going and make you want to go for a highscore. got to 59 and then died.
