Good But Need Some Improvements In Sound
Aww I'm sorry you had a hard time with the theme. Still nice work on the start sequence. Was actually quite funny. Cheers -RS
@big-cow Thanks, I'm glad you like it.
After the "you did the right thing" message I had to Alt+F4 out of it, is that right? Also are there no controls and you can do nothing? You write that you did not have time to implement more but I just want to be sure that I am not missing anything.
Otherwise I like what you have done so far and this is a good premise for a game. I like the cute graphics and the bouncing factory animations :-)
@gonutz There should be a menu where you can buy hats and stilts, but I screwed something up with the aspect ratio/resolution :face_palm: , so I just fixed it, sorry about that. You will still need to alt-f4 to exit tho.
In case this helps anyone else, to get the menu on the left to work, I had to enter full-screen mode.
That's a bummer about the theme, but I think you ended up with a great interpretation of it. I really liked your explanation. The opening scenes and closing scenes do a good job of conveying that. I laughed out loud at parts of the "winning(?)" message and then the animation leaping from the stilts. It would have been fun to see some of the higher you are, the harder you fall message built into a game mechanic like you mentioned, but I understand with the time limits and trying to figure out the theme.
For me, the WebGL build had some scaling issues.
@tddawson, Thanks for the feedback! Although I had trouble with the theme, I'm just happy I managed to make and finish something by the deadline, even if it wasn't entirely what I'd planned. I definitely would've liked to include some if the higher you are the harder you fall theme into the game as well, but I'm pretty happy with what I made considering the time constraints. Anyway, I'm really glad you liked it. :D
@wesley-vong Try to use fullscreen if you haven't already. That seems to work. You can probably tell that when it comes to WebGL and HTML, I'm kind of clueless. I think I fixed it tho.
Was pretty fun but simple. Good job releasing a game!
@caveman54 Thanks! :D
I enjoyed the story--it totally had me hooked. The story almost had a echo of the thneeds in Dr Seuss' The Lorax. I'm glad I did the right thing in the end. I noticed that you could theoretically buy as many stilts as you want without any negative effect.
@microwerx I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D It's only the purchase for the suit that triggers the "bad" ending, so you can buy as many as you want if you're patient enough. Idk why you would, but you can.
Aye. Yea, At first I did the right thing first (why waste life on stilts right?). Then, I played through to the end and then tried again up to 10 hats. Last night, my wife and I were wondering what would happen to the kids after she was buried, and the ending explained everything.
@microwerx I had hoped the ending would clarify a bit of the story because there was no dialogue or text. I'm glad it did. I had planned for the last "scene", after she's buried, to show that you're alone and that your kids left, but it wasn't too obvious, so I made then ending text screen to clear it up a bit.
Honestly it's not that terrible of a game as long as you rebrand it as an "interactive experience". What you currently have in there in terms of art and sound seems pretty standard for a game jam game, and honestly if you had simply added things to upgrade your income or some other way to earn money you would have a pretty standard auto-clicker game. Also worth noting is I probably would have rated it decently in humor if you had allowed the option to. Overall it's a decent submission even if it is lacking in some gameplay aspects, but the gameplay needed could probably have been put in in about an hour or so if you had known what to look for, which should be easier the more game jams you participate in.
@wiredoverload Thanks for your feedback. I definitely could've and should've added a lot of simple things that would've improved the gameplay a lot. Now that it's over, I've realized just how much more I could've added. Regardless of how it turned out, I've learned a lot from this game jam that will help me improve in future game jams.
Hahaha, in a way this is the anti-idle game. There is zero automation to be earned, only waiting. And you are in ways punished harder the longer you play it. The goofiness of the art, music, and the writing through the stark contrast only further cement the rather dark message (albeit a little cliche) that you're trying to get across. You could take it to an even further meta level, where us players sitting here waiting for the dollar go up are wasting our own lives for a currency that isn't even real! My favorite detail (and I don't even know if this is on purpose) is that when you open the menu it actually covers up your family's scene--the only way you can progress materially is to turn a literal blind eye.
Very interesting as a piece of art.
@jjjjason Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you liked it from an artistic viewpoint. The menu covering up the family was intentional. I wanted it to emphasize that you had to choose either wealth or family, you couldn't have both. I'm glad you noticed that. :D
I had to replay to see if i am missing something. I almost instantly settled and i think a restart button would have been appreciated. The audio is gets a bit annoying as time goes on. I didnt get the point of hats but cool thing regardless, and i would have loved to see you finish the ending. I'd suggest you add some upgrades to boost the speed of profit to make the game more engaging, though i understand that time is limited and the theme was not easy.
Definitely needs more work but has potential nonetheless, good job!
@lubaka Thanks for the review. I forgot about restart or quit buttons, probably because I'd finished the current endings so close to the deadline. Had I not wasted so much time in the beginning of the jam, I would've added upgrades to the factory, fixed the UI, and attempted to make audio that wasn't annoying (although I'm not too great at that tbh). The hats were just supposed to be more material possessions, so I should've spent more time making upgrades to the factory rather than making the hat system.
Anyhow, thanks for playing!
Now I got to play the game. So I just have to wait until I get enough money to buy all the hats? You said the game was not finished so this is fine :-)
The ending is interesting, my poor wife and kids...
I love the final animation when I fall from my oh so beloved stilts ;-)
