LD55 — Summoning

Deep by MaggardJosh 2024-04-17T00:41:33Z

Overall an amazing game!!! I would definitely play a more fleshed out version of this some more!!

So many things done right! Great music, great world, great upgrades! And there is nothing quite like knowing I'm going to die because I was too slow to turn around, watching my screen go black as I run out of air thinking this is the end, then seeing everything come back to normal as I just barely made it to the surface in time! Such a joy to play :)

Devotion - A fairytale by daandruff 2024-04-15T23:55:59Z

If clickable items highlighted when hovered over, it would make things a lot more intuitive. The puzzles were creative though, and once I figured out the specifics of interacting with each one, they were very clever!

Summon Chess by popertots 2024-04-16T05:02:39Z

Cool concept, good use of the theme. Let me know if you ever release a version with animations!

Have you considered making summoning take your turn? I just waited for the enemy king to wander over to my side of the board, then summoned a pawn right next to him and immediately won.

Demons stole my stuff by Zirrrus 2024-04-15T04:38:59Z

Cool concept, sound effects would've improved the experience a lot. The clues/dialogue was actually pretty good! As was the art

Upcard Writ by alec 2024-04-15T23:35:07Z

Loved the game! Feels very polished!!

Loitsumaali by vinzBad 2024-04-17T03:40:33Z

Lots of fun, always love a good draw to spellcast game :)

DegeNerative Dungeon by A.Bond 2024-04-15T04:21:31Z

Unclear on what to do? Also it has some lag spikes whenever score is about to appear

Hardcore High School by CaptainDreamcast 2024-04-15T05:33:02Z

Didn't realize I had to hit enter to start. Lots of instructions, not sure what the point is

Sminer by LightningST 2024-04-15T15:05:27Z

@alex-mulkerrin what OS are you on? 'Cause I haven't had any problems with the Ludum Dare web version on Windows

Sminer by LightningST 2024-04-15T20:55:21Z

@nash I'm glad you liked it! One of my reasons for making the summoning automatic was so that at first you can just focus mining quickly, then as you get more skilled, you'll have time to strategize and learn the recipes.

Sminer by LightningST 2024-04-15T21:59:00Z

@alex-mulkerrin

Should work on chrome now!!

Sminer by LightningST 2024-04-16T03:07:53Z

@altaf-creator thank you! I spent forever trying to find that balance of juice, but without giving anybody a seizure XD. It makes me happy to hear you enjoyed it!

Sminer by LightningST 2024-04-16T22:12:13Z

@iellswo yeah, before this game I didn't realize how hard a difficulty curve can be to make! In the future I'd like to add some more variation in the ingredient spawns instead of just increasing the ore and enemies.

I also really love the evolution system and ranged enemies in games like Age of War 2, and I would love to implement those as well. Though if I make the battling more complicated, I'll probably need to give it a bigger focus on the screen.

I really appreciate the detailed feedback :)

Dark Dominion by ChuChuGeralt 2024-04-16T01:33:27Z

A little bit of a slow start, could definitely use some pacing improvements. The limit of one action per turn was a little annoying with how long the turns took

The Saint Of The Great Sorrow by Jonathan Lorenz 2024-04-15T04:19:44Z

The environment was very nice! The game play wasn't super engaging or challenging. Also a wider FOV would've been really nice.

Cat in a Jar's LD55Summoning by CatInJar 2024-04-15T05:21:46Z

Not really sure what the point of the game is, or if I'm scoring or doing well? Some labeling or maybe a brief tutorial would help a ton!

High School of Conjuration by fumybulb 2024-04-17T03:26:32Z

Very good use of the following mechanic! The demons are a very fun enemy!

Ritual by filgreen3 2024-04-15T04:30:28Z

Awesome concept, Jaw is OP, adding stuff like legs in the future and bigger levels would be super sweet! I would totally buy a future version of this game. It definitely needs a small tutorial though

Let Me Cook! by reaxt 2024-04-16T05:14:04Z

Felt good, loved the interesting controls! Really creative!!

SoloChanting by JustusPan 2024-04-15T04:44:20Z

The movement felt a bit stale and slow, but I loved the puzzle/action of spawning monsters!

Shrine Sanctuary by Inune 2024-04-15T23:40:00Z

Thank you for the dialogue speedup when I press space twice! I've played so many games from this jam where the dialogue is too slow and unskippable XD

Once I figured out how to harvest resources (in non-fullscreen mode the SPACE prompt is cropped out) it was pretty quick.

Great visuals and good music!!

A Particularly Slow Broom Summoning by tykenn 2024-04-15T04:05:46Z

Fun concept, the puzzles were creative, but with only 2 of them it was a pretty short game.

For Democracy by Paulsams 2024-04-16T22:04:27Z

You should add a thumbnail! It'll help other people see your game :)

Capture the Princess by vidim888 2024-04-16T17:15:32Z

Fun concept, very challenging! It took me about 10 tries to finally beat it on normal mode!!

WORD EXORCIST by MarcoDeevil 2024-04-16T05:07:34Z

Fun theme for a typing game! The demon names were great touch typing practice for interesting words that aren't muscle memory!

The difficulty ramps up a little fast, maybe a system that adjusts to the users speed could be used? Also, it would be nice to be able to focus on not just the bottom word (so I can give up and cut my losses on a word or two instead of getting rekt by it and all after it)

But great tutorial! And the feel was awesome! Sound effects were punchy and typing felt good :)

Sorcerer's Steps by lambbones 2024-04-15T04:10:31Z

Being able to summon platforms directly below made it feel a little too easy, but the movement felt pretty good. I definitely would've preferred a bit larger FOV so I can see more of whats going on.

Koballd Crawler by Recher 2024-04-17T03:19:13Z

Very cool puzzle concept!

Paintamonium by fargred 2024-04-15T22:26:24Z

Summoners of the Rings by Thoastbot 2024-04-17T03:50:15Z

Awesome game! Lots of strategy, and I loved the stacking puzzle + battler combo!

Pandaemonium by D34TH0FTIT4N5 2024-04-15T23:44:54Z

Is there a win condition? I feel like I finished it but it didn't do anything.

Good visuals. concept is fun

Pandaemonium by D34TH0FTIT4N5 2024-04-16T04:22:36Z

@d34th0ftit4n5 definitely check the rules on this, but I'm pretty sure you can bugfix after the compo is finished. And if you've already created the scene, it might be legal to put the function back in

Lonely Hearts Demonology Club by The Lame Brain 2024-04-14T23:05:44Z

Not sure I understood the concept, I think some good visuals with instructions would go a long way!

Also, the top down view was great! Good visuals!

Arcane Ante by Rob6566 2024-04-16T17:20:51Z

Fun game, it felt like next up cards sometimes disappeared. Good concept overall thought!

Zephyr by Kaiway 2024-04-16T22:03:45Z

Definitely add a thumbnail on LD, it'll help more people see your game!

Reverse Rituals by freakyzelga 2024-04-16T22:22:31Z

Really great art, feels very polished! I did miss having something to click on manually while I waited for my demons to summon things.

Let me know if you get it fixed, I'd love to play it!

@themixedmaster I'll give it a try

The Summoning Goes On by Inkweeper 2024-04-17T03:15:47Z

Fun game! Very nice take on the theme! I was sad that I couldn't use the arrow keys though, as I am a bit more comfortable with those for games like this

Help/Spoilers

_If you want to complete the game normally, don't read this comment! That being said, nothing is more frustrating than being stuck on a puzzle in a game jam game. No wikis, no tutorials. So here are some hints to help you out!_

**Statue/Rat** 1. Have you asked Rat about the cave? 2. Who did he tell you to go visit? 3. Did you run their errand? 4. Did you return to them after? 5. Did return to the statue?

**Crawfish** 1. Did you know there are 7 item themes? 2. Which items are next to each option? 3. What animal is in a cave with those items?

**Chameleon** 1. Did you talk to the Chamelion? 2. What did they ask you to do? 3. Did you find all 5? 4. They're disguised as items that do not match other items in the room. 5. They are with the Gecko, Worm, Tortoise, Red Panda, and Hedgehog. 6. Did you return to the Chameleon? 7. Did you let them know you had found them all?

**Spider** 1. Have you talked to the spider? 2. What are all those rectangles below the 6 digits? 3. Have you asked any animals specifically about the code? 4. How many have you asked? 5. You probably want a piece of paper for this one. 6. Use process of elimination, you can do this.

**Cheat Codes** - Hold B, U, and G at the same time to go into debug mode (very fast, less shadow, no collisions) - Hold F, I, and N to unlock the ending (you can always restart to try all the puzzles)

Shrew by LightningST 2024-10-07T02:47:27Z

@richjbaron are you on Windows? If so does it give you any errors?

Shrew by LightningST 2024-10-07T16:33:42Z

@pirate-rob were you able to finish the game? If not, there is a debug mode (hold B, U, and G at the same time to activate) that let's you move much faster and through walls.

Also, I didn't even think about that for the code game. That would be super cool! I might have to add that after the jam!

Shrew by LightningST 2024-10-07T16:38:56Z

@mrspeaker I don't think so. At this point I don't know if I have it in me to deal with the weird quirks of web exports.

Also, the game is just one file. So if you do decide to download it you won't have to deal with any zip files!

Shrew by LightningST 2024-10-08T15:49:27Z

@niterich early on I totally planned on adding some shortcuts (kinda like the vents in among us) but ended up running out of time. It's definitely something I want to add!

LD57 — Depths

Punch Miner by recursor 2025-04-07T03:17:18Z

What an awesome game! One of the most engaging that I've played so far! There are still a lot of bugs though. There were lots of times that I died after dropping a very short distance from a ledge, I think the game thought I had been falling that time? I would love to play some more of this once you've tacked some of the bugs!

Target Practice by JCMonkey 2025-04-07T02:22:33Z

Was there an incentive to not have misses? 'Cause I just found myself spam clicking for the tiny one a lot (my highest score was 542). Fun game though! Gives me aim trainer vibes (in a good way).

Assessment 57 by manabreak 2025-04-07T07:33:28Z

Very awesome! Some of the later levels had some ambiguous orientations (only one side of certain cubes were shows in the preview) which made it a bit annoying to try all possible rotations of it. Also I had to flip one of two of the levels after completing it (even though everything matched). Also, have you considered a per-shape reset instead of resetting the whole thing? But I played all the way through and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very awesome vibe, and great music!

Assessment 57 by manabreak 2025-04-07T09:47:43Z

@jeffez even as someone who is not colorblind, I sometimes had a hard time telling the blue and grey apart, especially in the previews.

Refinerator by Jimbly 2025-04-07T03:56:07Z

WOW!! I was so confused at first, but when it clicked, it CLICKED! That was very satisfying and challenging. Also, that back button was a lifesaver! GREAT JOB!!

Refinerator by Jimbly 2025-04-07T22:54:09Z

@jimbly the scoreboard idea is great! Every Ludum Dare I wonder how many people that rated my game actually finished it (or even played it for more than 5 minutes). Also, yes it took me 2 or 3 tries, but I was eventually able to get all 12 clears.

Abyss Base Crush by ted 2025-04-07T06:51:42Z

You might want to put this on itch.io, the ludum dare window is struggling to not cutoff parts of your game, at least for me. (I'm on firefox, idk if that matters)

ABSEIL by baknik 2025-04-07T02:50:49Z

Fun concept! Always love a good physics game. I feel like there were a few times I should've been able to place an anchor but the game wouldn't let me? Maybe I just missed something. Gave it a few attempts and made it to 170 one time!

Pack by Jeremy Ryan 2025-04-09T01:01:43Z

Would be nice to be able to rotate items, but I understand that you'd have to do way more artwork. Reminds me of playing Escape from Tarkov XD

DESCEND with CAUTION by LightningST 2025-04-07T07:37:58Z

@wo-ri-gou-le great job finding that skip! I found it while testing earlier today and decided to leave it in as a fun little speed-running technique. Also, I'm sorry the water cave was hard! I even widened some of the gaps while working on it yesterday. Was it the spikes above and below that got you, or the tunnel of wall spikes?

DESCEND with CAUTION by LightningST 2025-04-07T08:06:35Z

@wo-ri-gou-le I get what you mean. I had to make the acceleration on the character slow enough that the jump could be controlled (without giving any air control, or going the jump king route of charging up). I wasn't 100% sure about the water section, but I figured it would give a brief change-up from the regular stuff. After that it goes back to platforming.

DESCEND with CAUTION by LightningST 2025-04-07T08:33:59Z

@sevatoxin I'm seeing that lots of people don't like the water section. I was hoping it would be a nice change of pace, and even adjusted the gaps while making it to be more forgiving. When testing I can usually get through that section without dying at all. Did I misjudge how difficult it is, or is it just not fun to have the jump taken away?

Also, what did you think of the dark matter section?

DESCEND with CAUTION by LightningST 2025-04-07T09:41:31Z

@singer I honestly put that there because I knew people would go that way just because of the sign. It was the best way for me to demonstrate death from impact XD

DESCEND with CAUTION by LightningST 2025-04-07T16:15:44Z

@jcmonkey congrats on finishing the game!

I didn't want to add any air control for the jump, but I wanted more variety in obstacles. It's not a perfect solution, but I ended up lowering the acceleration to give more control of jump distance.

@brittspace thank you for playing!

The propelling rocks are definitely a bit confusing. I wanted to add a tiny bit of upwards platforming just for fun, and that was what I ended up with. They don't actually push you, they are just moving platforms that add their current velocity to yours when you jump (or step off). While making them I had to slow them down and make the path they take longer to give you 0.4 seconds to make the jump opposed to 0.2 seconds. I definitely agree they could use another rework though.

When you say the first water/spike navigation, do you mean just the set of spikes underwater where they are on the ceiling and floor? And by right underneath it do you mean before or after, 'cause moving the checkpoint closer is a really great idea to make that part less frustrating!

@anstabo When I first started working on the game I spent awhile brainstorming how to make a fall height indicator. I ended up realizing that designing the levels to be intuitive was much more important!

I also ended up basing the death off of the velocity direction and magnitude compared with the direction the surface you hit is facing, this makes it feel more fair, since sliding down a steep wall and hitting a flat floor are two very different things!

@brittspace it seems ldjam doesn't like links. The only game I really considered while making this was jump king. I've only ever watched others play it, but I wanted that feeling of helplessness after you leave the ground where you have to hope you lined your jump up correctly.

DESCEND with CAUTION by LightningST 2025-04-08T00:33:27Z

@oxnh really? I feel like the inertia is what gives the movement it's difficulty. Also, early on in the jam I had the acceleration much higher, but it made controlling velocity for jumps much more frustrating and finicky. Also, not sure what you mean about the drums? They may be a bit loud but in all my headphones they sound all right. What audio device are you using?

Edit: He's using sennheiser hd560s, so he's probably right. If I do a post-jam release I will definitely tone down the drums a bit.

@0x-void-x0 I wrote a some classes that extend from Polygon2D. The most common one just adds a staticbody with a matching collisionpolygon, and a copy of itself with a different color as a shadow. It just adds both of these in its _ready() function. Not the most efficient, but it makes prototyping SUPER quick! The files you'll want to look at are classes/platform/platform.gd and classes/staticplatform.gd

@sadvest I found that skip and decided to leave it in since it doesn't skip too far or anything too important. It's a fun little treat for adventurous players!

@thisyc Thank you for coming back! I'm glad you were able to finish it!

@johnnysix Thank you! Make sure you play through the entire game, 'cause there's a section at the end that adds some air control as a mechanic!

Also, the walls do have a bit of friction, but I didn't have time to get it working perfectly. It's the reason you can slide down them without dying in the first place.

I've made some changes and put them in a playtest on my discord, I'm planning on improving the game some more and possibly putting it on steam in the future! Obviously don't change your ratings based on this playtest build. I'm just letting you guys know since I figured you might enjoy it!

@sam-flemington @wo-ri-gou-le @akkadion @lipski ^You guys all mentioned the water section being difficult and annoying. I've removed the above/below spikes in favor of a checkpoint, and removed the water from the pointless and slow empty downward swimming sections. I'd love to get some feedback from you four on how effective those changes are!

@outish @bongard22 @leorean @arthur-tang ^You four mentioned the end section. While I haven't really decreased the difficulty, I've added an extra checkpoint, and reorganized the obstacles so the difficulty is more of a curve. I would love to see what you guys think of it now!

The QR to the discord is in near the bottom of the game page. There's also a link to it in my LD profile.

@vegasword was the surface you landed on flat? I ententionally made the death calculation take into account the direction of your velocity and the direction of the surface.

@jacky-san I added a reverb effect to my audio channel that handles physical sounds, but didn't realize until exporting that effects aren't 100% supported on web. The .exe version shouldn't have that issue.

What browser are you on?

@lllarso I considered adding the timer in game, but I didn't want to stress out or frustrate people who were playing for their first time.

I will probably add this if I do a full release, but I will probably make it hidden the first playthrough.

LD57 - Slappy's Reef by Scott R Howell 2025-04-07T02:33:23Z

Wow! Great environment and very satisfying to dive and do tricks! The fish were pretty fast and hard to catch, but overall really enjoyed this :)

Fosu! by island-jam-2-group-3 2025-04-07T06:50:14Z

I got to 137, some keys for the lines instead of having to click them could be nice, but a very cool concept!

Very fun sound effects! Those red fish are so hard to hit!!

Anteater 2 by Fernando Tonon de Rossi 2025-04-07T02:08:18Z

I'm assuming you're using A-Star pathfinding? I managed to get the ants stuck at the top, but the whole tongue thing is a really cool concept!

Depth Defying by DangItsPang 2025-04-07T02:13:42Z

Took me a few tries to get a good ending. I really liked the puzzle aspect of this game! It definitely could use some more variety/challenge in the movement/pickup, but overall a good concept!

Fantastic job on your art! I think I saw your feed post about it too!

Pandora's Return by googlypoo 2025-04-07T07:50:46Z

Is there anything past the second level? I got stuck wandering around looking for stuff to do. Also, it felt a little easy, after the first two or three fights I was set to just win every time. I did really like the art though, and it's a fun game!

I agree with @sharploaded about adding force when moving arms. It felt like it was easiest and quickest to just use 1 arm to drag myself around, which probably isn't what you intended. Really creat concept though!

No Bottom by Manuel Cabrerizo 2025-04-07T02:17:39Z

Took me awhile, but I was able to get to a depth of 20. I do think a drop shadow on the squirrel would go a long way making the perspective less confusing. Great use of randomness to mix up the tunnel each time!

Shootwell by Sevatoxin 2025-04-07T08:09:45Z

4000m was my best. Sometimes my cursor would get stuck when I jumped or something? Other than that it was great!

Shootwell by Sevatoxin 2025-04-07T09:45:35Z

@sevatoxin if I move my mouse outside the game window while I'm holding down mouse1, moving it back in doesn't do anything until I let go of mouse1 and move it again. It kept happening to me 'cause I liked to just hold down mouse1 and keep firing.

Not sure if this is a code thing, game engine thing, or browser thing. I'm on firefox if that helps.
