Impressive game. I ultimately didn't find it very fun. The gun felt like a peashooter, and I could not handle the car controls. You sure did do a lot with the time, though! I like the twist on the theme

robowarrior1982 2024-04-15 15:40

Really good recreation of old GTA games ! It's pretty unfinished but that's a lot of potential.

frib 2024-04-15 17:18

@ooboob thank you! Yeah the car is a bit tricky, I find it best to not go too fast, that usually prevents the random drifting etc. And yeah the gun is a peashooter right now :D had absolutely zero time to make proper audio and bullet tweaks to make it feel better

@robowarrior1982 thanks! Yeah I spent way too much time building the city so I had to scrap a bunch of gameplay mechanics, and the worst part is that the physics go bonkers outside of the editor so even the gameplay is mediocre at best as you can't even run people over properly :'D

sharploaded 2024-04-15 19:44

Finished in 11:55. I like your take on the theme.

If you drive carefully the car it is manageable. I don't mind the peashooter sound, kind of feels like you are an assassin with a silencer. Graphics are okay, I don't really like the highlights (is it specular?) of most things, mainly the red roofs. Impressive job overall.

Music is AN ABSOLUTE BANGER! I still have the game running in the background so I can listen to it. Amazing!

fnelix 2024-04-15 20:49

You went for the old school GTA experience! Car controls work ok for me, but I had trouble entering it. Cool radio station! hVery ambitious game for the jam, no wonder you had to scrap lots of things. The city alone looks like it took you a long time to build. The colors are jarring though. Nice entry!

frib 2024-04-15 21:42

@sharploaded Thank you, and congrats on beating the game! Yes, that is indeed overtuned specular. I'm glad you like the music :D it's in the source assets if you want the wav

@fnelix Thanks! Entering the car only works on the left side of it, but I can imagine there being bugs I'm unware of :D Yeah the city ate up more time than I hoped. But hey, at least there's a ramp you can jump your car off of for no reason. Totally worth the development time... :D

argensis 2024-04-16 00:36

Completed in 14:36.

Serious classic GTA vibes, reminds me of playing GTA2 at an age where I probably shouldn't have been.

I may be the world's worst hitman though. "Sorry, Larisa, it's time to die.. Wait a moment.. Back a bit.. Forward... Oh I'm stuck between the car and the door... Back in. Ok, now Larisa, it's time to die"

vortexb 2024-04-16 00:48

Total vibe of a game, great job. If the controls were less sensitive, and roads a bit more vibrant I could see this being awesome. Music was great too :D

lightningst 2024-04-16 17:23

Fun game, I do wish the driving felt a bit more responsive though.

Also, the top down view was great! Good visuals!

maggardjosh 2024-04-16 18:27

This made me want to play the old GTA games  Car controls were very very difficulty, but loved the music and overall vibe. Well done especially for 48 hours!

dzejpi 2024-04-16 21:12

This is an extremely ambitious game for the compo, bravo! The car was a little bit too much to handle for me, I sure hope it's just the alcohol I had half an hour ago and I drive better in real life! From the player's perspective, I think it would be great to be able to enter the car from both sides. I like the old GTA feel, the radio and I like the textures, I think the city looks pretty good. With more love and work, I think this could be a pretty interesting game! Well done!

rcxa 2024-04-16 23:52

I agree with the other comments, this is a very ambitious submission. Also, a really creative take on the theme. I'm very impressed with what was done within the time constraints. With a smaller scope I think you could have added more polish, the controls were the main thing that detracted from the gameplay for me. But again, it's still impresses for a 48 jam entry. And I got a lot of nostalgia from playing this. Great job!

pincushion 2024-04-17 00:21

The song went so good with the driving. Good idea to play it only when in the car.

The driving was really fun. The town was interesting to drive in. The 180 degrees spin was too much most of the time. I usually wanted a 90 degree turn and overshot it. It was really cool though. I got stuck in the alleys a few times because my car went sideways. It took some time to get out of that. Loved running over people (mostly sanctioned).

I didn't really miss the polish (considering it's made in 48 hrs). I had fun. Mostly while bobbing my head and driving.

rob6566 2024-04-17 03:08

Damn - didn't know they'd released GTA6 already! Loved the music, and the map was pretty cool with multiple levels. The car was a little hard to control, but not too bad (wider roads might have helped too). Incredible work getting this done in 48 hours!

the4thcircle 2024-04-17 09:37

Feel of the driving could use some balancing but otherwise an incredible acheivement to recreate a GTA style experience in a jam. Well done.

andreas-decker 2024-04-17 09:44

Amazing music, fun funky car handling, and unexpected verticality in the map! Visually my only complaint is that the vertical textures flickered a lot and it may have been fairly simple to give the little pill people a head, so you could have random "outfit" colors and random skin colors. Would maybe make your target distinguishable when they walk into a cluster :D

The game was really fun, I love that you can get some air, and it's a cool take on the theme. When I was looking for Fyodor the arrow apparently led me to a bunch of innocents before it led me to the target, which makes it seem a bit like I wasn't sure *which* Fyodor was meant, and had me killing all Fyodors in town for good measure. 3 unsanctioned kills and one sanctioned kill seems a fine ration, or not? ^^

frib 2024-04-17 12:11

Thank you all for playing :D I'm glad you enjoyed it even with the extremely janky controls and physics :')

@argensis Awesome :D getting the job done is most important, even if the car tries to stop you :D

@vortexb @maggardjosh yeah the driving mechanics needed an overhaul that I didn't have any time for. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the music and vibe!

@lightningst thanks! Agreed on the driving :D

@dzejpi yeah I'm sure it was the alcohol as well. I've built in an alcoholic debuff, it's definitely not the car's fault... :D car entering mechanics were on my very long to-do list, I also wanted to add exiting out of the other door if you're blocked on one side. Thanks for playing!

@rcxa Happy to hear that it brought back nostalgia :D. As for the ambitions, honestly the biggest problem was just that building the city took way more time than estimated and I didn't want to make it smaller. And that stupid physics bug that only happens on release builds was a big pain for the final few hours. But that's all part of the game jam experience :')

@pincushion Thank you! I'm glad to see that you enjoyed it very much despite the shortcomings. Happy bobbing!

@rob6566 Yeah due to all the layoffs and delays, I got contracted to create this in 2 days. Glad you liked the height of the map :D it's probably the thing I enjoyed the most

@the4thcircle Agreed, and thank you! It was fun building it while trying to remember how those old games played :D

@andreas-decker Thanks! Yeah I definitely needed to do a graphics pass due to the flickering, it was on my long to-do list. Same with making the pills actual humans with limbs that ragdoll when you run over them. :D The quest arrow is a bit wonky sometimes; when you are walking it should accurately point to the actual target once you get close, but in the vehicle it behaves slightly different. And since you haven't been summoned to court yet, I'm sure those unsanctioned kills are fine... Thanks for playing :D

magnusfurcifer 2024-04-17 13:03

Impressive amount of game for 48 hours. Multiple mission types, multiple game-play systems (Driving, shooting, etc). A really unique and interesting take on the theme. I really liked that there was verticality in the map, it meant I could learn over time when I needed to detour to an upramp and jumping off of ramps and bridges was a lot of fun.

Fantastic job!

velvetlobster 2024-04-17 19:50

my first playthrough made the car bug and I could not get in

ok the car driving thing is pretty good

the music is not bad

the sounds on the voices are cute as hell lol

I got stuck with the car in an alley lol

the controls are kinda confusing with lots of keys that could be contextual like E to interact and F to get into a car, when only interaction with a car is entering in it

this felt like an evil prank making the player close all tabs if they are playing in the brower lolol

Screenshot 2024-04-17 164533.png

frib 2024-04-17 21:09

@magnusfurcifer thank you :D glad to see that you enjoyed the verticality!

@velvetlobster oops the alt+f4 was only meant for the windows build, but I must've forgotten to remove it again for webGL when I was trying to fix the physics bugs in the final publishing hour... totally not intentional but a great way for people to learn what alt+f4 does :D

The keys are convoluted because I was running out of time so badly that separating them was faster than unifying it into one hotkey... Also, if your car gets stuck, you can get out and press V to respawn it, then just follow the brown arrow towards it. Just another quick fix due to time constraints :D

Thanks for playing and the feedback!

batisdark 2024-04-17 21:40

It did remind me first 3-word game starting with grand :) all the vibes are there, except car was a liiitle bit more manageble there (though felt chaotic as well!).

Those voices and music in car - perfect!

Managing all that gameplay in so little time - impressive.

bradur 2024-04-18 08:41

I really love the classic GTA games so this was a blast! I appreciate that the DJ says the name of the station in the middle of the song haha. And the mumbling sound of the quest giver . The car is crazy! I was basically doing one taps on the W and S keys because otherwise the car would go way too fast. Cool entry, makes me want to create a GTA1 demake hehe.

thomz12 2024-04-18 14:06

Very well done! I got stuck in a small alleyway with the car and tried to turn the car around like Austin Powers. stuck-austinpowers.gif

It was kinda confusing to me that a car kill didn't count as 'killing by any means'.

Anyway, great job for 48 hours! Very impressive.

frib 2024-04-18 14:58

@batisdark @bradur glad you enjoyed the nostalgia :D thanks for playing!

@thomz12 yeah that's because of the stupid physics bugs that occur only in the release build. I discovered this way too late to resolve properly. Normally the pillpeople would ragdoll and receive damage when hit by your car, but now they just magically warp to their spawnpoint for some unknown reason and the pathfinding bugs out as well :')

Thanks for playing!

pimeko 2024-04-18 22:05

Love the original camera view, the controls felt clear and overall liked the mood :) I expected the roofs to be transparent when entering a house, but it wasn't a big issue at all. Great job!

jimbly 2024-04-23 03:44

Wow, this is utterly amazing, there's so much game here! The level design is huge, and sprawling, and there's even jumps to play with! Really great nostalgia, but also just a lot of fun! I seemed to avoid any real bugs while playing. I did, however, twice have someone declared "enemy of the state", as they were _literally walking up the steps to the courthouse_... poor guys. Only complain, is I would have liked a slower car, it seemed much more controllable at around half speed, but that's GT.. err... GCS for ya!

Nice job!

kiv 2024-04-26 22:14

man this is the game! congrats you made this good old experience in 48 hours, great job!

thelastslowpoke 2024-04-30 16:49

Hahahahah! I love how unpolished it is! I really love the camera work and the level design. They're awesome and they'd feel amazing in a more polished everything else! The ramp is the pinnacle of this game ^^ The driving mechanic is insane, I was giggling for some time when I first tried it, but after some time it became tedious. I'm sorry to hear you had some trouble with export. And the music fits perfectly! Great job!
