Very cute! Unique usage of ascii art for the game

richjbaron 2024-10-07 00:32

Love the art! Would've been much more fun for me if i could make the guys shoot each other for extra points haha

zimonitrome 2024-10-07 00:37

@richjbaron Thanks! I had a lot of ideas for the game but a lot of time went into just getting it to run at all! haha

Would be nice to be able to pick up guns or powerups yourself as well.

custodi 2024-10-07 02:17

This ASCII art is too awesome (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ Simple bullet-hell game, nothing more. Good job!

jejkobb 2024-10-07 05:44

I love a good bullet-hell game and this was no exception. Cool music and artstyle as well! Also impressive that you had time to add a leaderboard!

wo-ri-gou-le 2024-10-07 12:44

Of course this is tiny, each creatre only takes bits of data to exist lol, very detailed little game! (Leg animation's speed seems way too fast and causes afterimages on my brwoser, idk why but this is nothing important)

kernon 2024-10-07 12:57

I love the ASCII art! I could see this becoming an interesting bullet-hell game. Nicely done!

rpgwanderer 2024-10-07 12:58

It reminds me of games I used to program on TI calcs, where an UFO could be something like -=O=- that :) Catchy tune, by the way !

zimonitrome 2024-10-07 13:48

@wo-ri-gou-le Hehe thanks! Really tiny game, but still has the ability to lag a lot due to many (unoptimized) css updates! I noticed the weird framerate on my Linux system browser too... odd... There is always a thousand things I want to fix and improve on games like this, but ah the time...

zimonitrome 2024-10-07 13:49

@rpgwanderer loved playing around on the TI84, definitely a precursor to a lot of my programming these days!

rynti 2024-10-07 14:20

Quite fun to play! Unfortunately it didn't record my highscore for some reason, but doesn't matter :)

Really like the ASCII Art, in particular the shaking effect when you get hit. Impressive that you made this whole game in 48 hours, including an online highscore system! (smart how you did it through Google Sheets :D)

Some inputs: - Felt very rewarding to "grind" more points by letting them shoot at you! Clearly the blue enemies are the worst since they're the only ones not firing straight at you, so moving sideways can get tricky with them. - It was not so clear to me that I couldn't shoot. Maybe a little clarification in the initial screen could've made that more obvious to me. - If you had more content, something to recover lives would be great. But I assume this was a considerate design decision so that you can't survive forever.

zimonitrome 2024-10-07 14:48

@rynti Thanks for all the feedback and the kind words!

I am indeed happy with how the "grind" was rewarding. I did (and still do) have a lot of problems with the Google Sheets interface. Sorry that your score was lost :/ I suspect that if two players submit score at close enough time, one might not be recorded. It's free and easy but might be good to have something better for my next project!

I had a lot more features planned but ran short of time... clarity would be one of them and powerups indeed!

sviborg 2024-10-07 16:30

The ASCII art adds a special atmosphere, and the gameplay is exciting and dynamic! I really liked the shaking effect when hitting, it adds tension to the battle. The ease of control and unique visual style make the game truly exciting. 🔥 It is especially impressive that all this was done in 48 hours, including the online rating system!

bestjess 2024-10-07 20:53

The implementation for this is FASCINATING, what a fun technical project! As a game it took a while to ramp up for me -- it was so easy to avoid enemies, I didn't even get shot at until the 100 mark. The slow start makes me reluctant to replay it, but once it warmed up it did make a fun little bullet hell.

anekich 2024-10-07 23:15

I really like the idea of using ascii art as graphics, great job!

cisco 2024-10-07 23:25

Nice sounds and game feel. I also loved the graphics! Great game!

ethan-ly 2024-10-07 23:46

love the art and design! my favorite lil guy

wispeh 2024-10-08 00:00

An excellent DOM game! The ASCII art lil guy is in excellent aesthetic. Must admit that bullet hells aren't really my thing, but I did have a bit of fun nonetheless! Also proud to be the first negative score due to reasons you probably know ;) Excellent stuff!

dywanix 2024-10-08 00:03

Simple and fun!

stormburpee 2024-10-08 00:10

This was cool!

I love ascii based games, and was a very interesting take. The smoothness of the movement & the rotation when the character gets hit was very nice.

There's a faint shadow on the legs when moving, not sure if this was intended or not - but it looked like a bug when playing.

Overall, really good mate, good work!

daminator4113 2024-10-08 01:34

So cooool, sometimes only simple things work perfectly 👌 Sans titre 1.png *a bit laggy when they all shoot at the same time 😅*

allenw 2024-10-08 02:23

Oh god the main character is sooo cute. Everything feels so nice.

radjax 2024-10-08 02:32

Super awesome that you were able to do all of this in the DOM! The animation is great and love all the different faces!

woona 2024-10-08 03:03

I really like ASCII art! It has a lot of restrictions, so it's difficult to make an entire game with it. Great job!

Also, great idea for a scoring system, it really made me attempt more risky moves, just to get more points. My PB is 1187 after playing a couple of times.

Sometimes the enemies get sneaky and hide behind the wall and shoot you. That's the only issue I found.

Good luck with your future projects!

olddog 2024-10-08 03:24

so cute, enjony this game so nuch!!! very nice game art, wish for more content to play

blackcat508 2024-10-08 04:25

I love the ascii art!

derly 2024-10-08 07:42

The ASCII art is unbelievable

reecemungus 2024-10-08 11:17

I love the art in this game, really creative use of ASCII. The animations on the player running and getting hit are super satisfying, as well as the enemies. The sound effects are also really good, I love how they fit the simple art and I think they sound great.

Overall, this is an awesome entry. It's one of my favourites so far I'd say, well done!!!

vhalenn 2024-10-08 13:31

Quite fun for a simple game with the score at the end! Great job!

noper 2024-10-08 13:54

I love how its incrediably simple and fun.

kotolazer 2024-10-08 15:12

I don't know why, but my character doesn't move doesn't shoot. But I really like the style. It's minimalistic and technically done in a very unusual way

kirass 2024-10-08 18:05

This game is so cool! I loved it!

yizhang-li 2024-10-08 20:52

This is just adorable, I love this game, the music and graphics work perfectly together, I love this game

andrewkennedy 2024-10-09 02:20

Really creative implementation! I'm sure it won't last long but I got a decent place on the leaderboard!

Screenshot 2024-10-08 191818.png

I thought the difficulty ramped up at a really nice pace. Great work!

zimonitrome 2024-10-09 10:29

Good feedback @bestjess and I do agree! It has a slow ramp up for me too. Would be cool if you could get more points earlier if you have more skill.

Thanks @daminator4113. I'd say it gets A LOT laggy at some point haha. I even had to shrink the game stage to remove more bullets haha. This would be a challenge to solve if I ever did this again!

sudocoffee 2024-10-09 14:56

The game has really great vibes. Terminal emulator port soon?

I didn't read the description beforehand, but the game got a lot more interesting once I realized that each bullet fired was another point. The best strategy I found was to rope the red and black (o o) into the middle and circle around them continuously to rack up bullets fired. And also make sure I never got too close to the edge so they wouldn't spawn on top of me.

The main obstacle was dodging the blue (o o) because they didn't move much, so roping them into the middle with the rest of the herd wasn't possible. In that sense, how good I did was somewhat tied to the ratio of blue to red (o o) I got in a given round.

Anyway, got second (⌐■_■)

koningmathijs 2024-10-09 19:16

This is a pretty cool entry! Really impressive tech-wise, and gameplay is simple but solid. Well done!

skbadger 2024-10-09 21:19

Fantastic game with a lot of charm from the minimalist graphics. Simple but addictive concept. Congrats!

zastegnushka 2024-10-09 21:38

Interesting art style, it's great, unic, I didn't see something like this!

dashvirus 2024-10-09 22:10

Ahhahah it's nice ! The ASCII change when you take damages is really cute ^^ It was difficult for me to play with my AZERTY keyboard (playing with ZQSD), but I still enjoyed, and made the awesome score of... 330... haha ! Not that good heh

Good job for you game ;)

lightningst 2024-10-09 22:15

Really great idea! The pure HTML gives it a super unique vibe!

nickhellquist 2024-10-09 22:21

Really cool! Solid game-play, and love them visuals!

andreia 2024-10-10 04:20

The game art and characters were very cute. Would be nice if you could bait them to shoot at each other as was mentioned. The addition of the leaderboard was really impressive and adds a motivation to keep retrying. Great work on this ^^

astrayrae 2024-10-11 03:23

Wow, absolutely love the artstyle o( ̄▽ ̄)d and actually takes quite a bit of tactics to not be overwhelmed (especially by the duo-shooters) Was really fun to play!

hubol 2024-10-11 03:53

I love the characters!

aentro 2024-10-11 07:55

Your work remind me my senio middle chool time. In China, students are strictly not allowed to bring the smartphone to school. But one of my classmates owns a programmable caculator, so I use the poorly cmd window to make a Gluttonous Snake game and played happily with my classmates. Good work, thank you.

gamebuilder 2024-10-12 01:51

A fine use of ASCII and the DOM — your ingenuity knows no bounds. I love it!

henk 2024-10-13 21:42

I shudder to think what a screen reader would make of this.

Most "gimmicky" games that get submitted to Ludum Dare aren't much more than the gimmick, but in this case the game is quite good even before you consider how it was made. Congrats!

satless 2024-10-14 04:19

rly inovative, i'll def look into the source code for this one, a well made experience!

tetrergeru 2024-10-14 20:00

Cool idea! It kinda langs strngely on my laptop (linux + chrome), but otherwise the experience is slloth. Good work!

mardood 2024-10-18 19:18

Ascii art was cool and I liked the music loop.

crispybacon 2024-10-18 19:19

Its neat, but I wish I could do more while playing.
