LD56 — Tiny Creatures

My tiny friend and I went on a puzzle adventure in the forest... by thristhart 2024-10-07T23:48:40Z

Puzzles feel really well done, but definitely too hard for me! I'm a casual when it comes to puzzle games, and found myself stuck for frustrating periods of time just on the 3rd and 4th puzzles (did not make it past the 5th). Certain mechanics (like the fact that the turtle can move WITH the mouse, or can also carry rocks) could have been communicated more clearly. But when I did succeed, it felt great! A slower difficulty ramp up would have made this perfect.

And the writing is delightful, especially the raven and the toad. I would've given up much sooner if I hadn't been genuinely interested to see what they would say next! I could see myself replaying this! I want to know how it ends!

Critter Switcher by torcado 2024-10-10T01:43:02Z

It's very cute, but I had trouble figuring out how to play. In the very first room I entered, I was immediately cornered by two enemies and just died. Eventually I figured out you can kill enemies if you attack them at the right time, but it was a bit confusing and hard to figure out. I just kept dying a lot. I didn't get far enough to find any of the other animals :(

Tiny Beast Hunter by neowhoru 2024-10-08T17:05:24Z

The pixel art is cute! Unfortunately I had a hard time playing because the A and D controls didn't work for me. I had to move with the arrow keys, which on my laptop are super small.

Pot Life by chuckeles 2024-10-14T17:04:00Z

Very cute concept! It was both relaxing AND stressful to play -- I was not good at protecting my flowers haha. I could see this having some Tower Defense-like gameplay features -- waves of increasingly pesky bugs, defenses you can set up to deter them, etc. But even as-is I spent way longer playing it than I expected. Nicely done!

Flower Friends by Jejkobb 2024-10-07T20:46:44Z

Cute game, relaxing mechanic! I do wish the gameplay had some variation in it though -- maybe new flower types as it progresses? By the time I reached the end it had gotten monotonous for me

Juicy Little Morsels by Brendan Milos 2024-10-08T16:47:40Z

@chocolat-endive @brainoid Thank you for playing! I appreciate the feedback. Balancing difficulty was very difficult for me, because I'm in the same camp as you guys -- the final game ended up too easy for me.

During playtesting there was a huuuge divide between "normal-level" players and "expert-level" players. This difficulty curve is currently tuned so the average player, who probably doesn't play aim-based games a lot, can have fun. If I'd had more time I'd have added a difficulty mode selector, so separate difficulty curves could exist for the different player types, but alas! As it is, this game shipped with just "normal" mode. Something to think about next time I make a reflexes-based game!

Juicy Little Morsels by Brendan Milos 2024-10-11T16:30:41Z

@local-minimum We had the same goal of keeping the game loop to about 1-2 minutes -- the hard part here is the skill disparity between "normal" players and "expert" players. With the current difficulty curve, by far our average player does NOT make it past the 100 second mark. For many people, this is actually a difficult game!

But for players with prior experience with aim-based games, this difficulty curve is far too easy/boring. We didn't have time to add in multiple difficulty levels, so the game released with what is basically just "normal" mode, so it can be accessible to as many players as possible. But I agree -- I also find it boring as-is, and wish I'd had time to improve the gameplay experience for more advanced gamers.

The Pasture by Fis 2024-10-08T17:41:00Z

Wonderful game!! Lots of fun, I almost didn't want it to end. It feels great in late game when there are so many bunnies that you're accidentally making matches without realizing.

One note: I didn't realize that my lives were going down, and was surprised when I hit game over.

Boba Teeny by ScrapMetal 2024-10-10T05:34:24Z

Extremely clever concept, and very cute execution! Took me a few tries to get the hang of it, I kept panicking trying to defend the the other bobas from the straw and ended up sacrificing myself haha. Fun enough that I replayed a couple of times!

Tiny Escape by Loig 2024-10-11T16:49:26Z

Very well done! The early levels teach mechanics in a nice gradual way, and the puzzles are satisfying and interesting. I did die on the last level and wished I could restart just at that level, because going through the first 14 again didn't seem fun, but overall I was very impressed! The sound effects especially are fun :)

Beetle Tower by Doot 2024-10-08T19:14:30Z

Extremely well done! The gameplay was fun, the difficulty ramped up well (although I'd have liked more time at the higher difficulty level -- that's when it was really starting to get fun!), the art and animations were precious, and the sound effects were delightful.

walking pet by MegaHana 2024-10-10T18:08:50Z

Adorable concept! Some aspects (like getting the cat to move) are a little unintuitive, and on my first play I ended up with the cat and the pomeranian(?) at opposite ends of the screen, such that I couldn't reach either of them anymore. After refreshing and trying again, I managed to win. Confusing, but cute!

Bee Incremental by SharpLoaded 2024-10-10T05:53:00Z

Simple concept, well executed! Like any good incremental game, I had trouble tearing myself away (and indeed stuck around until I won at 12:30). Nice job!

The implementation for this is FASCINATING, what a fun technical project! As a game it took a while to ramp up for me -- it was so easy to avoid enemies, I didn't even get shot at until the 100 mark. The slow start makes me reluctant to replay it, but once it warmed up it did make a fun little bullet hell.

Destroy these tiny creatures, they are nasty and swarming by HangoverGames 2024-10-09T01:09:00Z

Extremely clever take on the theme! As minimalist as the assets were, they were cute and communicated the idea clearly. Gameplay was most interesting to me at the worm stage, but what otherwise fine. Well done!

Tiny Ghost Creator by LyaMgtt 2024-10-09T17:12:39Z

Adorable!! Only thought that occurred to me (aside from expanding on customization options) was that it'd be super cute if the ghost had a light floating animation, just some bobbing up and down while the shadow changes in size. Would add some life to the screen! But the concept and execution is great as-is

Bugicide by Escias 2024-10-09T00:33:33Z

Fun! I had trouble figuring out if I was using the controls correctly, especially with the delay between clicking the dynamite and having it appear, and also the day/night mechanic confused me. But I enjoyed it!

Stacoon by Wesel 2024-10-10T01:48:37Z

Adorable art, amazing music, and it's a fun concept! I appreciate the slow tutorial introduction, but found it hard to memorize all the controls

Brood Defense by franklyn01 2024-10-07T21:05:37Z

LOVE the mechanics and the simplicity of it! I found the difficulty curve very easy -- I had no trouble getting through every round, but I see lots of potential here for more strategic depth. Playing on different maps would be super fun, so we would have to anticipate how the pathfinding would play out.

That One F*cking Fly by Arthur SAUER 2024-10-07T21:19:15Z

Fun concept, but it took me a moment to figure out the controls, the score bar (?) in the upper left is clipped off so I can't read it, and the human never got close to me. I just landed on a cake and stayed there for a while. So I wasn't really able to play it as intended, but I like the spirit of the game!

Ghosts! in the Garden by Athaeryn 2024-10-08T00:03:06Z

Cute art, love the frog animations especially! After saving the frogs I wasn't entirely sure what the goal was, but the glowing mushrooms did help me figure it out.

Ants War by Danikmiks 2024-10-08T17:59:46Z

Core mechanic is solid, made it to 1000 points before I got bored. Providing some kind of indication when enemies are being hit would be useful -- at first I thought bullets just didn't work at long range, because they didn't seem to do anything. I eventually realized the damage probably just falls off? But I thought I wasn't hitting them at all.

Betrayers' Anthill by IFcoltransG 2024-10-07T20:39:58Z

The writing made me smile! I wish there were more decisions to make than just the one at the end -- I kept wanting to give letters to people other than their intended recipients
