Awesome yet difficult game! I struggled a bit figure out why my fish were dying and lost a few games since I didn't realize they hurt me. 😅
Overall a visually stunning and fun game!
This feels like one of those games you would play on an arcade cab. I enjoyed it!
P.S. Your penguins are really cute and I want to pet them
Such a cute little entry! I had a great time playing this one! My only real complaint is that i would agree that it was tough to tell that when you drop a fish it stays and becomes a hazard. Not a ton of room to work with for pixels on the pico-8 from what I can tell so not sure what you could do to make it more obvious. Maybe a more ominous sound or something lol.
Awesome job!
Hey, amazing entry! Great visuals, audio, and gameplay. Controls are tight good, and the game is very easy to pick up and play. My highscore was 540 (I was surprised when I saw someone got 3300, by the time I had 500 I was already overwhelmed by spikes hehe)
Really hardcore game for me, despite its cute style and music! Visuals and music are neat, the mechanics are simple, like in old-school games, but require a high level of skill to play. The difficulty ramps up a bit too quickly for the average player, in my opinion.
This is a fun little game, I really like the pico8 style. This remembers me to Celeste, where is a little game inside the game in pico8 style. Great work!
Awesome arcade game in pico-8 style! 🎮 The graphics and sound design are just amazing and the controls are very responsive. I had fun, but sometimes it was really difficult: several times I didn't notice that my fish were becoming a danger. 😅 Still, it adds interest to the game! I love the cute penguins and I would like to see more levels and different obstacles. 👍 Overall, great job! 🎉
Very good job! Very enjoyable to play! My essence complained that it was hard to realize that when you throw a fish, it stays and becomes dangerous.
A very cute pico-8 arcade game (and it has penguins!). This was a lot of fun, I really love your art style and you've come up with a great original game loop that is very fun to play. The only gripe I had was that I ended up in a situation when I couldn't get to the baby penguins with my fish because they were behind obstacles that I could not cross, so the game ended on what felt like an unfair loss, however I'm sure this a bug or something you can account for in a future patch. Other than that I loved this game. It's always awesome to see what other pico-8 devs manage to build during these events and you did a fantastic job with this.
@historymaker118: Yeah that was definitely an oversight from the spikes spawning uniform randomly---in hindsight they could have been sampled to never isolate land (beyond fishbones, which are in the player's control) :(. Glad you enjoyed it regardless!
Superb! The music and art style worked together so well, and served the gameplay, too! My only negative was that if I was moving pretty fast and pressed X to drop the fish, the ones that were trailing behind me weren't scored if they weren't in the zone. Once I realized that I adjusted how I played, though.
I agree with the other commenters that this feels at home on an arcade cabinet. Super creative, great work!
Very very cute game!! The artstyle is THE best I've seen yet!! And the music is awesome - I love working with the PICO-8 DAW. Great job !!!
TIL pico 8 cartridges are embedded into a png. Neat.
Very cute and fun! Simple and straightforward but rather challenging. Reminded me a lot of the recent Magic Garden game in UFO 50 but with a fun twist of not being locked to a grid. Very impressive given the console!
Great work, might come back later to hunt a high score!
Great work! I can tell you put a lot of love into this. It says that being too feed the penguins will hurt you (from heartbreak of course) but I never saw the health go down? Otherwise every part of the game works so well together and is really fun to play! Good luck with the compo :D
I really like that idea. Artstyle looks so good!
Enjoy the graphics and audio, challenging but fun game
this game is so pure and funny! I really like this simple game, you got the best art and music in the world!!!!I fell the children time when playing this game

cute, love the game!
This game is so cool! I loved it!
I'm bad at it :/ Nice game though
A very difficult game

Game was great! One issue I had though was differentiating between dropped fish and spikes since they have the same color.
Cute little game! The pixel art is awesome and the movement feels really nice :)
first try WR ez get rekt @rickylee

I didn't do too badly!! :3 Hehe, as always, the Adelie delivers! I love that you managed to get music in this time! HYPE!!

Thanks for submitting your game to the stream! If you wanted to watch it again in the future heres the vod of the stream (timestamped to your game)

Also Wanted to ask if youre fine with me using gameplay from the game in this LDs [score chasers tournament](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/$405421/ludum-dare-score-chasers-qualification-begins) intermission video. (Would play in the breaks of the tournament on my stream). Last year for reference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuddhZScWxo
@ategon: Yup can use it however you like :D
Very nicely done! The fact that fish turn into traps was interesting! I would never have thought of that! Screenshot 2024-10-09 at 21-12-52 Adelie - When We Were Young by Meep.png
Love the controls! Even just moving around feels really awesome!
10/10. You scared me a lot on Sunday. When you published your game I took a break from my project to check your game and when I saw empty game page without a link, my heart slinked for a second cause I thought at first that you gave up and didn't manage to make game this time. It is a tradition of ours since we discovered your games to play them and share among the team. Every single game you create is a joy and cool experience and with history of so many games, it almost feels like UFO 50.
I was so relived later to find out you did make another Adelie game, and as always it delivers. Fun unique idea, fresh new concept and another chapter in Adelies legacy. You never stop impressing us and your games never disappoint. Here hoping for many more to come, all the best and congratulations on another fantastic entry o7 cheers.
is this even possible on compo when you're ALONE?
@rotob123: If you neglect sleep. :')
@bigwhiteshogun: I was hoping no one saw that! D: I accidentally hit submit instead of save when drafting the LD page, and the itch page wasn't ready yet so I cleared the entry until then haha. And yeah, people catching on to (and ultimately enjoying!) Adelie's repeat appearances is what motivates continuing the series. :D Would definitely be cool to compile them into something like UFO 50 in the end!
I love this! Simple but super fun, perfect game for LD. And the little penguins and seals are adorable! The only little thing I wish could have changed is that the fish, fish bone and spike being the same color, make them a little difficult to distinguish.
Really wonderful execution! It's just fun to move around on the ice. Its also quite challenging once you get more spikes. Damn you climate change (or something)!
not the record yet, but i finally figured out a strat that works for me >:D adelie.png
@itsboats: You got this >:D
Fun easy to learn yet hard to master game! I may need to be more careful next time cause I hit spikes often and missed many combos but I get the fun of this game.
I had a smile on my face during the whole session! Very funny!
Very cute animations and super responsive feel!
It could be a nice upgrade to drop the health bar and counter for tiny penguins (as the interface gets quite busy on higher scores) and make it so that they jump out of their zone and slide away once fed. The zone itself could show the time left somehow.
Spikes could be cracks in the ice where you lose your fish into the ocean?
I the drop zone mechanic is simple but add a great flavor to the game, well done!
@meep heck ya i do >:D Adelie.png
my general strats: 1. feed the first pengus 3 fish but wait in their box until the timer is red. This is to gives you more fish by waiting, but also gives you more time to set up a long chain since the next pengus is in a group of 4 (am pretty sure the timer is directly tied to the number of pengus?) 2. make the a huge chain, completely ignoring the poor pengs until you have 1 or 2 hearts. If you lose a fish or two, don't worry, you completely ruined your run and just restart 3. just keep trying to make the longest chains you can safely make without losing fish and wait until the the timer is red so fish keep spawning. If you keep doing this, it kinda gets to the point where you can get plenty of fish really quick and spend most of the time fitting them inside the box. If you still have 2 hearts, skip a round of pengus to make a longer chain 4. eventually theres too many spikes and you gotta start turning in really small groups like 2-4 fish
I think this one of my top 3 fav Adelie games xD even with really simple mechanics, theres a surprisingly amount of strats you can try and the controls smooth as heck

I love the risk-and-reward aspect (and the quadractic scoring makes the risk even more tempting). Unfortunately I'm a coward so I won't be getting much higher scores than these, hahaha 😅
I wish i was a penguin
[Thanks for submitting your game to stream!](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2273720699?t=02h13m33s)
Once again, this was just a nice, tight, polished action game experience
This might be a personal preference, but I do feel like it would be great if I could cash in all of my fish when my PENGUIN was in the safe zone, rather than it being dependent on whether or not each individual FISH was in the zone.
After a while, I felt like I had to be super slow and careful to fit in the zone, which felt a little antithetical to the fast-paced sliding mechanics of the game.
Again, that may just be me, though. Personal preferences aside, this was an awesome game!
wow, for me the game is a bit difficult, but overall it is very polished and smooth. Great entry!
I love this game! very well polished and well thought. I first i thought you could fall from the edges haha but it became easier when i understood it wasn't the case. I love the little detail in the animations and the feedback Thanks for this game!
Woaw, this a very good and polished arcade game!
I love the graphics and music, and the gameplay is very fun! I like the risk/reward mechanic, with the extra fish being harder to deliver in the zone, but earning you more points! I also love how they turn into hazards when not delivered.
The game starts easy but quickly become very challenging, but after each game over, I just wanted to start another attempts as the game feels fair: If I loose, it's because I made a mistake, not because the game cheats or whatever.
Congrats for this great entry!
Really polished entry! easy to grasp to start right away and can suck you in by trying to get a highscore. My only recommendation would be clearing the spikes in a new zone, would allow for some more visual clarity in the zones (as spikes kinda merge with the fish zones) and gives a reward to the player for surviving another area
Really polished feels smooth to play. first time I've actually enjoyed ice movement in a game.
Very cool! Loved the animations of the creatures, it got tough pretty quickly after the seals entered the fray.

Really fun. Reminds me of UFO 50's Magic Garden. Was that an inspiration? It would be nice to occasionally earn potions to clear some of the bones and spikes :v
@coltonphillips: It was! It inspired having the fish in the zone as opposed to the player in the zone, and inspired being punished for fish dropped outside of the zone. :) The main reason the hazards aren't removable is to avoid the game going on forever, though in hindsight it at least could have used a way to remove bones (e.g., seals could clear them?). :')
Wow! The game is so wonderful! Keep making games!
Excellent entry! I love when Adelie comes back to visit when rating games. :D
The movement (and visualization of such) feels really great- it's easy to ski around the playfield, and it's definitely possible to thread the needle and avoid hazards. Like others said, it has similarities to Magic Garden, but it's definitely more of an evolution and different take on the 'cash in' mechanic than a copy. The 'leftovers' becoming hazards is really creative, and the fact that the fish aren't grid-based adds an extra layer of trickiness. Also, the sound effects and music in this one are fantastic- and not just because of the inspiration taken from the penguin's namesake, hehe. And, lots of great visual touches that work with the gameplay to make things feel very tactile and responsive. (I love Adelie's spin!)
Really cool! I scored 1270! I wish fish wouldn't turn into deathly traps when you take hits or drop them outside the box, as this makes the game's difficulty ramp up even faster when you start struggling. Maybe clearing up a few of the spikes and fishbones when you die could help solve this. The core gameplay itself is quite good and addictive, the graphics works really well, those baby seals are really cute, and audio is good as well! Really good work for a compo entry! Well done!
@rickylee @itsboats @kuviman How TF did you guys do that?? Omg. That's impressive. I got 210. Eat that.
This game was SO much fun!! The movement felt so fast and fluid. And there was just a nice flow to it. Very rewarding when you could deliver a bunch of fish. Everything read really nicely and you could catch on to the gameplay easily. The little babies were so cute too.
Those spikes can suck it tho. BRUTAL. My poor penguin babies starved because of those f*ing things.
How do you score so many points? 0_о A challenging and fun game!
@maxdrago: The trick is to drop off many fish at once—longer chains of fish are worth much more than dropping them off one at a time. :) Of course, you have to balance that with not hitting hazards, etc. :')
What a fun little game, with soo much polish! And using my favorite fantasy console! Strong entry! Great work.
Gathering food for your young ones is such a compelling goal, and indeed equally heartbreaking on failure. I love the scoring and gambits needed to get a high score. The allure of getting some long chains drove me to do some things I'm not proud of. Everything about this game fits together so nicely, and the sound, graphics and wee touches like the spinning animation are all just so lovely. Excellent work!
