LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Pre-Life by Cassio Eduardo 2018-12-09T12:25:59Z

On the top of my head after 2 play through:

In several rooms, it took me a certain time to figure out where the exit was

It's hard to balance when you don't know what are the possible actions that will impact the values to balance. So there comes the exploration, that's a good thing. Problem, the passing of time and the amount of stat available makes it impossible to test all (or most of) the actions. And you can't deduce. It's game that seems designed as a story oriented management game, it feels more a game of chance. for instance, in 2 sessions (no time for more, so many games to test), I haven't been able to find an interaction to improve the health.

I liked the mood (music + story), and I liked the need for exploration

Condom Please by badpaul34 2018-12-14T15:56:21Z

I'm struggling to get the humor of a game about child abuse up to beating to death or child prostitution without any consequence. I would have enjoyed a system presenting a parent sacrificing himself/herself/themselves instead.

The game mechanics are based on a minor compulsive loop. In my opinion, using compulsion as a system should be avoided. But if you use such a repetitive compelling system, maybe it should be balanced by giving back to the player in some way. Experiencing child abuse doesn't come to mind, though experiencing emotions like sadness could be a valid one.

The challenge of earning money is balanced so that it's not easy and not hard either (for a non casual player). I think a casual gamer would struggle with understanding the consequence of actions and tasks. Said consequences could use a little more feedback.

I appreciate the condom idea and the visual aesthetics.

Misc. notes: The first person arm doesn't seem necessary neither for immersion nor for aesthetics, maybe you could remove it. It's possible to feed a child that you have just killed

Final Flight of STS Recovery by masterkrepta 2018-12-10T10:06:39Z

It's nice that you've been that ambitious for a compo! That's the problem with Gamejams, it's supposed to be a space for experiment and trial and errors and innovation. But it can't work if people avoid risks and errors and keep doing the same platformer or puzzles or platformer puzzles.

If you do some inertia based controls, the player needs feedback (on in HUD for instance) about the direction and intensity of speed. I played the post jam version, acceleration/force given by almost flat terrain seems way too high to feel right. The rover get stuck very often or will suddenly accelerate without any apparent cause. Bottomline, controls are catchy. In addition, in my case, WASD isn't friendly with AZERTY keyboards and the Arrows + mouse click + space need 3 hands ;)

Once the controls are adjusted there is definitely a balancing pass to do about enemies and the need for abilities. Currently only jump is helpful to get unstuck. Killing enemies doesn't have much impact.

The Sacrificial Liam by jimmothysanchez 2018-12-10T09:03:49Z

Kudos for the humor and the VO! I had fun playing this neat puzzle game.

The music was a little annoying. WASD isn't friendly with all keyboards (notably AZERTY), alternative Arrows or 5123 on numeric keypad are easy to set up in UE4.

Node Based Tycoon by rootools 2018-12-10T16:24:27Z

You could have easily plugged the sacrifice theme in an economical sim game while capitalizing functionalities for your dezired concept. I think on that regard you miss the point of a Gamejam. Learning to work with all the constraint is important.

Regarding the game: Victory is way too easy. I haven't been able to break a connection between nodes without destroying a node.

Otherwise, you could have used more resources paths with harder to handle and shared resource dependencies. Maybe add some dynamic elements.

You also face the issue of any graph display: the spaghetti machine! The graph becomes quickly unreadable.

I'm fond of tycoon games and most of their challenge relies on space optimization, by using a graph topology you remove that possible challenge. The question you should ask is how to make the game challenging.

It's nice that you have a working prototype. Iterate on it!

Hello operator. by cowa 2018-12-09T15:49:38Z

Nice 48 hours prod!

The lack of music could add some feeling (oppression for instance), but it's not really what makes actual immersion. I don't mind that a 48h compo doesn't have any music.

During one session, I was idling doing nothing the whole session and still got a score of 10 saved life.

Roustabout by bitdecay 2018-12-10T09:19:37Z

Nicely put together. I liked the tetris inspired mechanics.

Get down Mr President! by GenericToast 2018-12-12T14:44:59Z

Nailed the theme! Fun to play.

En Passant by Paul Nadan 2018-12-09T21:15:38Z

Good misuse of chess moves into a side scrolling platformer! Nice thematic touch with the Chess sacrifice strategies. I'm not particularly a fan of (or good at) platform games, so I was taken aback by the speed of enemy pawns. Some polishing of the difficulty curve could help the game be better.

Redshirt Air-Patrol by GettingRekt 2018-12-10T08:42:36Z

I loved the sound effects. I enjoyed playing with the indirect controls. Kudos for the humor!

Consilium - A history of life and choices by Gaming Night 2018-12-11T23:38:09Z

I was enjoying a good play through, starting with a nice clean art and original mechanics. Then at some point, as the number of controlled square grows exponentially, the frantic mouse clicking killed the experience. This gameplay doesn't scale well as is. But for a gamejam production, well done!

Let Me Eat You! by v1ru6 2018-12-05T22:29:08Z

Thanks for your feedback, guys. I will test all your games this weekend.

So it's possible (hard) to avoid the predators and still loose. It would have been obvious, had I raised the hunger rate a bit. And there is a sort of post-play after "winning".

@byggy Disabling WASD to control the camera and disabling the leader outline was a bad 2AM "good idea". It's already coded actually. :/ The stop moving is simply due to collisions. In my to do list was a flocking implementation that I never did. I should have disabled collision for the Eatmes. @mekuri Yeah I should adjust the starting camera definitely , all my friends that playtested had the same issue. @pat-farnach I struggled 1 hour with particle effects for the eating and then I took a shortcut

Let Me Eat You! by v1ru6 2018-12-14T13:25:54Z

@badpaul34 First and foremost, don't feel obligated to be a D. If you restrict game design and prototyping to challenges, you have much to learn. Maybe the challenge wasn't the point. I could direct you to Stone Librande or Marc Leblanc conferences and tutorials for instance.

And I merely state corrected bugs and packages utilized (and therefore not made during the jam). Where did you see me telling "Buy me stuff! here is the bit.ly link 15% off"?

2305 : New Generation by Azayiah 2018-12-12T08:40:01Z

Very good framework for a nice storytelling oriented game. I hope to see more of it.

The blinking mouse cursor was a bit annoying and was breaking the immersion. Especially because it is the windows cursor and it wasn't in line with the graphical chart of the game. As it's very dark, an option to set the gamma seems also an important feature to think about.

Bottomline well done!

The Chosen Sheep by Ellenack 2018-12-09T14:41:35Z

Well put together! I enjoyed the raw sheep treats.

Did you try another control setup such as WASD or gamepad?

Brick Climb by Funkyjive 2018-12-09T20:39:24Z

Well done! Good game. The pace of the game seems a little fast which ends up being more about fast clicking than strategy. Also I suppose most players are going to just choose 1 robot at the start because eventually they won't be able to handle more than one. Maybe the mechanics should give the player a valuable reason to try moving the other 2 robots as long as possible.

Rift Core by chaosed0 2018-12-09T13:57:43Z

Well done! The difficulty curve could be improved, there is a huge gap between tutorial and the first mission. Also with the marquee rectangle selector, I was expecting an RTS control of multiple units. I would deactivate the marquee selection.

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Descendants by AndideBob 2021-04-28T10:44:43Z

I loved the intro and the immersive tutorial. Sorry I couldn't play longer than several minutes

In term of control switching characters sequentially was a bit cumbersome. Nice mood!

Deeper and Deeper P. I. Agency by v1ru6 2021-04-27T17:45:27Z

@stuffedgravy Thank you for your feedback. The description has been updated accordingly. The aliens are implemented and were in the game from the first day build. But the photo mode HUD was bugged. We have uploaded a new build to correct this bug. It should be easier to understand what to do now.

Deeper and Deeper P. I. Agency by v1ru6 2021-04-29T06:43:59Z

@thebmxeur @lrvstudios Thank you for the feedbacks. Well, you know gamejams, not a lot of room for playtests ;) We're aware that the audio doesn't work. Also we had to cut out a couple of other features because time was running low. We will probably do a version post jam :D Thanks to everyone for prizing the Art. @uiopman and @camille-000 are the culprits behind all that cutness.

Sheltered Deep by ThorPalsson 2021-04-27T16:36:30Z

I would have appreciated a quit option. I was quickly stuck after the first dialog nothing seemed to interact despite the hand icon showing. How do you play? What did I miss? Nice ambiance though.

Legend of the Goblin Hoard by Bauke Regnerus 2021-04-27T09:50:33Z

Hey very nice for a first attempt. Also nice Art Direction, 3D Modelling and animation are on point for a low poly game. ;)

Pâquerette Down the Bunburrow by Herbie Puppy 2021-04-29T12:54:21Z

I knew bunnies were fast at making babies, but that fast? Nice little game :)

Down To Earth by DanB18 2021-04-29T15:10:12Z

Nice idea. Difficult for me to playtest because I don't have a QWERTY keyboard. :(

nice game

Abyssflier by v1ru6 2024-10-08T15:59:11Z

@kevin-meissner, Yes the feedback is a bit confusing we intended to make either a gaz diffusing VFX and sound or something more like energy based but we didn't have the time. So basically if you keep shooting at the swarm it will die over time.

Abyssflier by v1ru6 2024-10-08T17:08:26Z

@overlix Yes, sorry for the confusion. We didn’t adjust the culling distance, so you'll need to get closer to the rod that is being attacked

Abyssflier by v1ru6 2024-10-08T17:12:55Z

@wolfox121 As I mentioned before the feedback of the gun is confusing. And we used GPU particles, you can't actually collide with them. We could have used a tech artist ;).

Abyssflier by v1ru6 2024-10-09T17:45:34Z

@abductedplatypus It was definitely too risky! the initial plan was to do it in Unreal Mass, but there was an online tutorial for flocking in a Unreal Niagara particle system. However GPU particles can't collide with the rest of the world.. Hence the hacky shooting feedback. As for which rod, the session structure was put together last minute in a hasty way, I agree with you there should be some way to point out which rod was attacked. Thanks for playing.

Abyssflier by v1ru6 2024-10-09T18:10:05Z

@mrtroy @dianavi @hugaoxu @crozzy and all the one I already answered to, thanks for playing :D

@bacalear @pimping thanx for playing :)

Abyssflier by v1ru6 2024-10-11T04:51:11Z

@pikario Than you for the suggestions and for playing.

Abyssflier by v1ru6 2024-10-12T00:39:25Z

@master-yeet Shooting at it definitely works, though not as precisely as we wanted due to a bug. Aside from that, better feedback was also our conclusion. And thank you for playing.

Abyssflier by v1ru6 2024-10-12T18:52:09Z

@bassilij Thx for playing :)

Abyssflier by v1ru6 2024-10-13T15:37:38Z

@tritax711 @tommy Thank you for playing. Our particles are GPU, so old GPU would struggle. It took a lot of time to setups the Niagara systems, so unfortunately the gameplay and notably player feedback is lacking. Thx for the suggestions.

Wrath by MadHumster 2024-10-08T18:25:03Z

Fleaes by captainzo 2024-10-09T15:21:50Z

The tutorial is either confusing or bugged, it says that you should protect the fleas and then welcome to the tutorial. During the game it's difficult to understand what to do, there is a lack of feedback to the player action. Chill music :D
