LD50 — Delay the inevitable

Akashica by Skruffye 2022-04-05T13:33:20Z

Fantastic work here. Really well written, the library is really intriguing.

I played twice to cover more ground, but I have to move on. I'm keeping the executable to play again later though, I really want to know if there are scenes I haven't seen, or even if there is some kind of ending.

My first playthrough I died to the infinite room. If I had enough heatlh left, would I eventually have been able to cross it by selecting "Keep Going", or is that just a trap to get curious idiots like me killed? 😭

Sunday Traffic by Mads 2022-04-05T08:18:34Z

This is my favourite one so far!

At first I was like "this is so relaxing", then ten minutes later I am clicking like an absolute fiend.

Brilliant.

TOOB by Gatlink 2022-04-05T15:46:56Z

This game is far, far too hard for me to play for any length of time - but my god it's gorgeous. I think it might be the prettiest game I've seen in a few months - just in general.

I'm going to keep trying, I get the feeling there may be a skill barrier that once you overcome - the game opens up for you.

Wipeout by TheMoonrise 2022-04-05T15:40:33Z

High score of 23,406. I think I could maybe triple that. I am going to keep practicing.

This game rules, dude. I LOVE the typing mechanic.

I think maybe the balance mechanic should be a bit more lenient, and that failing a trick should END your run.

The player essentially gets to choose the scale of their reward by waiting for the multiplier to increase before popping a trick. Since the only risk that exists right now is failing the trick, the risk reward doesn't balance out enough IMO.

So far, I think maybe this is the best game I've played in the jam.

HONORED EXECUTION by Cope 2022-04-05T01:18:05Z

Fantastic sprite work! Love how the dead enemies acculmulate over time.

Spores & Suffocation by IvanPavlov 2022-04-05T15:26:18Z

Graphics and sound are really fantastic. The breathing sound effect is really claustraphobic, and I genuienly felt panicky when the laboured breaths started!

Also really love the ambience of the spores floating around, and the design of the characters.

I keep getting stuck in the room with the broken window? There doesn't seem to be a solution with the stuff I have on me, how do I get out?

Re: Placement by Outfrost 2022-04-08T00:10:09Z

Absolutely brilliant, mate. Central mechanic is wonderful, graphics and audio also great.

Re: Placement by Outfrost 2022-04-08T00:21:58Z

This goes against some of the feedback you are getting, but if you take this idea further I don't think you should "de-obscure" the board. Looking at the board and figuring out which easier parts you can place without obscuring harder ones in the back rows is a nice extra layer of strategy.

It also adds a layer of risk vs reward to boards you complete whilst time-pressed. You can place the easier blocks and hit the button, or you can risk the money you'd earn by placing a couple of harder pieces then quickly placing the easy ones.

Re: Placement by Outfrost 2022-04-22T15:17:31Z

This deserved a top 10. IMO, this was the best game I played in LD50.

I've continued to play this, and think about it, since the day I (temporarily) took the top non-developer score 😁

Re: Placement by Outfrost 2022-04-23T11:35:28Z

@outfrost That would be excellent. I've followed your itch account for notifications!

If you try hard enough, you can win. by Rxbbie 2022-04-05T13:39:43Z

Polished to a mirror sheen.

Big Vampire Survivors vibes, which is a good vibe to have. Love how thick and fast the upgrades come, and especially love the shotgun. For anyone gunning for a high score, I think a decent strat for when it gets impossible around 2:20ish is to find a shotgun and turtle in a corner.

Stickman Dam by Sawyer 2022-04-05T15:14:59Z

Would have been good to have a score counter, and some background music. Other than that, nice entry!

Sundown by Rawb 2022-04-05T01:26:27Z

Art is great, kind of has Nidhogg vibes.

I think there is a bug (at least in the WebGL version) - the gun automatically fires all your shots on load.

Demon Wins Everytime by MacabreArtGames 2022-04-05T02:15:21Z

Really like this one. Zombie models are great, game is really moody. Like how non-traditional the controls are as well.

Best strat I've found is constant circle strafing. Got to about age 25, which I feel is probably not that good 😁

NOT YET by TheGreenWorm 2022-04-06T13:02:18Z

Controls are very tight, art and sound are both great.

Really love the theme as well, not enough games where the protagonist is an old man!

Bosh rush concept seems quite unique to LD, only one of these I've seen so far.

Unreal submission given you only had 48 hours.

Lava Hop by BarelyEvenGames 2022-04-05T14:07:30Z

Agree with the guy above, screenshots don't do justice to how pretty the art is in motion.

Also, god damn, I suck at this game! I'm freaking out over high 2 digit scores and there are people breaking 1000...

Witch's End by Roikku 2022-04-06T13:00:00Z

Lola from the Twitch chat! Fantastic entry, best one I've played so far. Movement is great, upgrades get the endorphins going. Really brilliant core loop.

RE - the movement, what you said in the chat is what I meant. You change direction but you continue in the original direction for a split second. Would feel sort of like a "drift" if you get what I mean.

If you want playtesters for further builds, I am 100% here for it :D

Bald Dad tries not to die by Re-Lo 2022-04-05T13:14:20Z

OK, I played it. Good fun, liking the art a lot. Couple of gameplay criticisms, but nothing major.

Health pickups are too stingy, they barely recover any health so sometimes they are not worth the risk trying to pick up 😭

Limiting player ammo is a fantastic idea, most of these kinds of games are just a shooting fest, but this one forces you to be precise in everything you do. Having a melee attack adds another layer of decision making to this is a well, which works really well, but if you melee attack up or down (as opposed to the sides) you usually take damage which limits it's utility somewhat.

γ€ŒWhen The Death Arrives」 by roccay 2022-04-05T02:08:40Z

That was... Dark 😭

"You died of pneumonia at age 12"!

Love the music, and how stressful the bullet mechanic is.

Will Goo by Rafael Garcez 2022-04-05T15:34:24Z

Agree with @100th-coin, sometimes the level generation is brutally hard, and other times its far to lenient. I was really close to beating that 198 high score but then got a really long horizontal corridor to run though 😭

Mechnically this is pretty good. Jumping is immediate and has good weight to it, and there is no weird corner issues with movement, or collider clipping stuff that I've encountered in other games.

Good submission overall.

Timebound by zSharpFire 2022-04-05T15:20:46Z

This is really overwhelming on the senses to start with, but when the overload settles down and the gameplay clicks - this rules. It reminds me of the kind of games you'd find in old arcades full of slot machines.

The minimalist graphics are awesome. You should add some super bass heavy 90s techno in as background music, would compliment it really well.

Some of the weapons as harder to use than other (sniper rifle requires a high degree of accuracy, and the bazooka requires you to place shots really well) - but I suspect that's me being bad at playing video games 🀣

Timebound by zSharpFire 2022-04-05T15:27:40Z

@zsharpfire I've followed your Itch page, would be interested in playing that update.

Scuttling Is Painless by HexyVexy 2022-04-05T01:59:24Z

@Fromage The jumps are "chargeable", if you hold the jump button down and then release you will juump higher. The dash and sprint are "upgrades" that you find as you go through the level 😁

Scuttling Is Painless by HexyVexy 2022-04-05T02:38:42Z

@ikilledkenny121 It's turns off after the first terminal, and the music starts. I think we realised about 10 hours into development that we'd birthed a monster into the world 🀣

Scuttling Is Painless by HexyVexy 2022-04-05T09:07:09Z

@chaoseiro Cheers buddy! The laser sequences are absolute nails! The one in the yellow corridor is especially mean spirited 🀣

Scuttling Is Painless by HexyVexy 2022-04-05T17:23:44Z

@rufus 100% a bug, collider causing the transforn parent to change too early 😫 need to find a smarter way to handle it for next LD.

Cheers for the good feedback, especially the charge reset, I've never noticed that one!

Scuttling Is Painless by HexyVexy 2022-04-05T20:09:22Z

@copito We had a half implemented options menu with resolution and windowing options but it was buggy and we ran out of time.

Will make sure our next effort has it, and has ultrawide support.

Trying to be unique with the charge jumping was a bad idea in retrospect 🀣

Thanks for playing and for sticking with it ❀

Scuttling Is Painless by HexyVexy 2022-04-06T03:46:20Z

@barelyevengames a large gap should open up between those enemies, since one has a longer path than the other.

I think you've maybe found a bug 😁

Scuttling Is Painless by HexyVexy 2022-04-06T12:37:15Z

@erikengineengineer I'M SORRY I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THAT ALARM SOUND.

Scuttling Is Painless by HexyVexy 2022-04-06T12:39:40Z

@Roikku When we put the updated version on Itch after the jam is over, I am definitely putting the terminal that turns the alarm and flashing lights off much nearer the start 😫

Scuttling Is Painless by HexyVexy 2022-04-08T17:41:40Z

@ditam Thank's, mate! Our artist (HexyVexy) probably was thinking evoking certain moods when he tweaked the lighting. He spent a bunch of time putting light sources in the right places and making the lighting as even as we could manage!

Don't burn my Nugget by Gabriel Bissonnette 2022-04-05T15:51:17Z

Reminds me of the Alto games on iOS, but much more difficult to master. Controlling the jumps feels really good, as does nailing a landing after doing a bunch of flips.

Fantastic art in this one. Sound is really good as well, the intro screen sounds gave me that ASMR feeling - wonderful stuff.

Wish nugget didn't have to die though 😭

Wickfall by OriginalDog 2022-04-05T08:32:33Z

Fun as hell. This is the kind of thing I buy on Steam. Love turtling in tower defence games! My only complain is that there isn't more yet!

Over the Rainbow Bridge by Iguanana 2022-04-05T13:05:21Z

Didn't expect to find a game that hits that hard - but here we are 🐢

Really enjoyed the pixel art. Super minimalistic and clean, and extremely pretty.

BaraRun by DerekBell 2022-04-05T15:04:40Z

Really like the music track! Most of the games I've played so far have went for chiptune stuff (not that that's bad, we did too) so it's nice to hear a hi-def bop.

I keep getting RNG'd into an impossible jump and not being able to get further 😭

Good mechanics though, well implemented.

LD51 — Every 10 seconds

thanks, II hate it! by thristhart 2022-10-08T20:49:58Z

When Wordle appeared I almost pissed myself laughing. Fantastic. Very funny. Each game was well implemented. The rhythm game in particular is a stand out!

Many fond memories of playing Minesweeper as a child with my uncle. Still got it.

Pupu Pew Pew by Samuli 2022-10-03T22:39:52Z

Banging soundtrack. Sounds like a high-fidelity OG DOOM!

Game is really good fun. Really cool aesthetic. The limited bullet count adds a level of stress you don't get in most light gun games.

Really, really wish I owned a lightgun. Never seen an LD entry that used one!

Decaedia by arzi 2022-10-08T17:12:02Z

This was a very ambitious entry. A lot of systems, probably a lot of logic, and a lot of art. Very impressive given the time restrictions.

The art was top tier. Good designs, and GREAT direction - I liked how visually distinct the areas look even though they reused the same art.

Story was neat too. I liked that all the characters had their own "voices" in the way they were written. The dialog read well, like it could feasibly be spoken aloud by real people, which is rare in this genre! :D

I liked the battle system. It felt snappy to control which is important in SRPGs (and isunfortunately is often overlooked), especially ones where the battle arenas are arbitrarily sized. Having said that, I felt like it was a little too easy to get turned around. In the third area I got into a fight and my 3 party members were spread out quite far apart when the battle started. It meant that the camera was flicking back and forth across quite long distances which was a little disorienting.

Other than that my only criticisms are about pacing and hand-holding! Took me ages to figure out the crate holding the gem was an interactable object, because the first thing I did in the game was click the crate in the starting area!

Overall, great work!

10 second arcade by loveapplegames 2022-10-09T10:22:01Z

Really neat. Crazy amount of work for 48 hours!

Standouts for me were Zombies, Diving, and Siege. There is a decent idea for a tower defense game in Siege somewhere!

Out Of Memory by adam-gould 2022-10-08T21:37:33Z

Hey! It's me from the ArcaneRituals stream last night, back as promised!

This is excellent. One of my favorites so far.

I love programming games, and this is a pretty good one. This is a concept worth having a go at in terms of making a larger product.

In terms of criticisms I will say the game gets very difficult very quickly. Level 8 in particular is extremely tricky. The ramp up needs to be slower I think or you're going to lose a lot of people too early. The UX in level 6 needs to be explained better also. At first I was trying to complete the level in 1 "bar" and when I couldn't do it I'd just restart the level. Obviously the solution requires you to click "Keep Going" but (for whatever reason) my brain just wasn't processing that properly which meant it took me way more tries that necessary to work it out.

Even though I criticized it, I think the massive difficulty spike can't really be worked around given the time limit. You *have* to ramp up the complexity of the levels to show off the depth of the puzzling!

Overall really nice entry. My most played in LD51, if only because I'm dumb as a bag of hammers and it took me an hour to finish :D

Fish n Keys by BobFish 2022-10-04T15:15:40Z

Cool concept. You can get quite good at it with a bit of practice. Visual feedback that food is cooking would be nice, maybe some kind of timer bar near the area where the things you've already cooked sit.

Some of the keyboard gymnastics you can hit in one motion are surpring 🀣

Sheeple by Jonathan Holm 2022-10-04T09:46:41Z

Those poor sheepies 😭

The evil escapes screen is absolutely gorgeous. I laughed out loud when the second part started and I realised what was happening.

You've been Thunderstruck by borgi 2022-10-04T10:15:39Z

I absolutely love this but there is bit I can't get past. After you've cleared the very crowded square there is 3 rows of baddies you have to pass, with a level 10 guy guarding the door. No matter what I do I haven't been able to hit level 10 in time. Have I softlocked myself by not picking up experience on the way?

You could make an extremely compelling mobile game out of this. Has the same kind of legs as something like Vampire Survivors does - at least for me.

The decasecond by Shakedimus 2022-10-08T21:09:16Z

Really unique take on the theme. Maybe one of the most unique I've seen.

UI and UX I thought were quite good. Everything was clear, well explained.

I thought the prompts were variable in quality - some of them lent themselves more toward pure comedy, and other lent themselves more to "QI" style bullshit facts, which is the intention. I think crowdsourcing prompts as part of the game might be a neat idea.

Overall, really neat. Feels like something out of a Jackbox Party Pack!

The CyberZapper by Vhalenn 2022-10-04T09:03:51Z

Great graphics. I love the UI elements and the sort of "warping" effect around them.

Soundtrack was really good. The distorted synth that plays when you persist in a level longer than 10 seconds is highly stress inducing which is a nice touch.

Controls felt pretty good too. The weapon that shoots blue flame is extremely satisfying, especially if you've been stuck with the "sniper" one for a few rounds that requires far more precision than my aim can provide :D

I also found a bug! [You can escape from one of the arenas and wander off :D](https://i.imgur.com/BUlHs9c.png)

Poda Wants a Statue by Doot 2022-10-04T11:05:57Z

Extremely cute. Core loop is fantastic. An upgrade that stops Poda from confusing n bunnies per level would have been nice, but to be honest I was just trying to get as many resources as I could because it's fun seeing the numbers go up :D

Graphics and sound all a-tier.

Keet Kats Panic! by Mr.Esport 2022-10-04T10:03:12Z

Lovely art and music. Really cute aesthetic until the foxes come and kill your cats 😭

Found the challenge level really compelling. Around about the time 3 foxes comes in it gets absolutely nails hard trying to balance upgrades with care.

Nice job.

OH! STUPID ENGINEER by ThatzNiko 2022-10-03T22:33:49Z

Absolutely fantastic. Art is top-tier, mechanically very sound. Love the crunchy sound effects. Upgrade loop on the defences is quite nice, but you can get OP far too fast!

This is the 3rd game I've played so far. A high bar has been set.

NN7 Guardian by Erlioniel 2022-10-04T09:54:07Z

It's like if the Homeworld devs made a game based on the Lost Fleet novels. Liked it.

Aesthetically it's absolutely amazing. Really consistent, beautiful art across the whole thing, the music (sounds like Mass Effect!) is awesome.

I can't tell if it's actually tough or if I am just bad at it, but I keep death spiralling and running out of resources :D

Bygone Melodies by Save Sloth Studios 2022-10-04T11:22:06Z

The graphical work here is top notch, as is the sound. Having art and music that good on such a short time frame is beyond impressive.

THE_MACHINE_KNOWS_HATE by HexyVexy 2022-10-04T09:55:48Z

@amarokczukay I had a look at a OSX build, but since I don't have a Mac it seems it wouldn't work. Next time we may look into HTML5 so we can dodge OS issues entirely :D

THE_MACHINE_KNOWS_HATE by HexyVexy 2022-10-04T21:17:06Z

@whos-candice Sorry to hear you had control issues! Were you using controller or mouse and keyboard, and would you be able to describe what the issues were?

THE_MACHINE_KNOWS_HATE by HexyVexy 2022-10-04T21:32:55Z

@aidturith Thanks for playing! Yeah, we did discuss changing that level by making the platforms reset when you die, but by that time we were running out of time :D

@harry-alissavakis Thanks bud! Really enjoyed your playthrough. Will give your game a play today :)

@wouter52 Thank you so much! Genuinely blown away by the positivity :D

We have been discussing how we might expand it. More mechanics, better movement, more and bigger levels etc! If you follow us on Itch there may be something in the near future!

THE_MACHINE_KNOWS_HATE by HexyVexy 2022-10-07T10:18:55Z

@volodymyr-karchevskyy Thanks for playing, and for the kind words! <3

@tigerfinch Thanks! <3

We are planning to expand the game and I've been thinking about selective use of music for certain stages. Maybe if we want to make a stage *extra* spooky we could give it music :D

10tris by x000000 2022-10-04T09:41:57Z

I had a beautiful well going. Was a guarnateed Tetris. Had a line piece coming and everything. AND THEN THE BLOCKS ALL MOVED.

Excellent work.

Unforgiving 2 by Morfy 2022-10-07T21:18:15Z

A gauntlet of pain that I had a lot of fun with.

A suggestion I said in the stream was adding a buffered jump system where pressing jump whilst still in the air would "queue up" a jump that would trigger on touch down. I think it would make the sections where you have to cross multiple platforms a bit tighter. It would also make it easier, which might take something away from the game!

Nice entry overall.

Headcount by Bogden 2022-10-04T11:08:57Z

Years of drumming finally coming in handy!

Didn't expect to spend that much time benchmarking my sense of rhythm when I sat down to play LD51 games.

Void Well by Helzinko 2022-10-04T11:14:52Z

Fantastic graphics and sound. The game is really intense as well. It's kind of like a reverse Downwell - has a similar atmosphere even though it doesn't play or look anything like.

THe character controls are fantastic. Responsive and snappy, and the shooting mechanic feels very nice. Every time I died it felt like my own fault, which is rare when I play score attack games :D

For the life of me, I cannot beat 30m.

A nice addition that probably wasn't feasible giving the timeframes involved would be an online scoreboard. I'd love to know how I am doing compared to other people.

Great entry.

10-sec pause mania by Stingby12 2022-10-09T10:14:09Z

This is great. It's a little hard to understand what to do at the start, but once you figure it out it's plain sailing.

The puzzles are devilish in places! Maybe even a little too hard too fast. I recognize that in the limited amount of time you have to develop though it's *very* difficult to have a gentle difficulty ramp up.

Thought the graphics and sound were nice as well. I'm a sucker for this kind of 8-bit, OG Gameboy revival style.

Nice work!

The Great Escape by amarokczukay 2022-10-04T08:52:08Z

Really, really nice. Not enough old school point and click adventures in Ludum Dare :D

Loved the style of it, and the central mechanic. The timer is also very clever - you are the only person I have come across so far who made the ten second timer last longer than 10 real life seconds!

Against the Clock by Thomas Yanuziello 2022-10-04T14:47:02Z

Awesome concept! Execution is nice too, love how striking the graphics are - good to see other devs using resstriced color palettes.

I would maybe have though about binding the hour hands to <- and -> so you could move both at the same time, could make crazier waves that way and forces the player to pay even more attention.

CORONAVOID by Sturza Anzor 2022-10-03T22:47:11Z

HTML is broken, but that seems to be the case with basically every game!

Download build is fine though. Liked it.

Player controller is very nice. Smooth and easy to control. I always feel like I'm not in control in these kinds of games but in this one it was paced nicely. Fast enough to easily dodge the projectiles, but slow enough that I'm not wandering into walls and enemies.

If I could add something it would be a nice cross hair. I lost control of my mouse cursor a couple times and accidentally moved the window 🀣

I also found a small bug. You can walk off the upper bounds of the level and seemingly get stuck there.

Nice work!

Really great job. I love the "micro-game" compilations. I especially like the NOT ones. They ensure you are actually paying attention.

Light in the Dark by Gecko64 2022-10-04T10:56:50Z

Love the graphics and sound. The percussion getting louder as The Thing approaches is a really nice touch. Adds a layer of stress to the game. The lantern effect is also nicely done. I like that you have a little bit of leeway after the lantern goes out to find oil. Little touches like that make a big difference when you're adding atmosphere.

If I were you I'd have made the collider on the player smaller than the sprite so it's easier to navigate around corners. But on the other hand getting stuck while you're being chased make it more tense.

We also used light as a central mechanic in our entry, nice to see someone else thinking along the same lines!

Really nice work, especially for a first try.

LD52 — Harvest

The grand harvest championship (I must win) by vidarn 2023-01-10T19:10:15Z

My favorite entry so far.

At first I thought the idea was kind of limited, but then it all started to click and everything fell into place. Weaponising your rocks and witholding your water cards become a kind of arms race as you try to maximize the use of the available squares while also angling for opportunities to drop a couple of tier-3 and tier-4 plants onto the board.

I'd LOVE to play this against another person!

CowMower 2000 by AXLplosion 2023-01-10T18:46:56Z

I got oddly wrapped up in getting them all, but best I could do was 40.

If you think about it, aren't we all just cows in a featureless field waiting for be hit by a combine harvester?

Harvest Village by Dannyk1994 2023-01-10T19:23:06Z

This is really neat.

I SUCK at the game, but I do understand it and it is fun!

It kind of reminds me of Dorfromantik a bit, which also started life in an LD jam I believe.

Scoopy the Spoon Thief by miraculousMelon 2023-01-10T19:55:52Z

Excellent work. I'm a sucker for anything 2D and stealthy. Reminds me a little of MSX Metal Gear.

Really like the level designs, loads of good fakeout routes and really well put together.

Forcing the player to remember the route they took in order to escape on time was a nice touch.

Brilliant art and animation, really atmospheric.

ASCII Farm by Kniffen 2023-01-10T23:01:39Z

I had fun with this. I like little webtoys you can just tinker with.

I think the board has a really nice aesthetic, and the UI is really slick and clean.

You could use this as a really good basis for a browser-based board game!

Starvesters by z0rg 2023-01-10T18:54:41Z

Looks gorgeous, especially when you approach one of the planetoids. Little hard to play in the browser though as the game doesn't capture the cursor. Decent entry, well done!

BEANSTALKERS by HexyVexy 2023-01-09T20:44:41Z

@thristhart Thanks dude! I have been up to wave 15 without really using the spells, but I think to get much farther you have to beacuse being close to the veggies increases the risk of being booped by a small mushroom lol.

Thanks for the kind words about my whistles :D

Slime Crime by No whOne 2023-01-10T18:38:18Z

Really good fun. At first it kind of annoyed me that you can't shoot whilst walking, but after I levelled up the move speed enough it became a non-issue. Art an animations were on point, loved how squishy and tacticle the slime felt. Thought the combat was really good, satisfying from the off, and only got better as the power ups were unlocked.

Really liked the synergy between the power-up that gives your shots a chance to be doubled, and the power-up that lets your bullets move through multiple monsters.

Beat it first time, although the giant red skeleton almost killed me a couple times!

Combine Harv-racer by procrasteroid 2023-01-09T21:54:31Z

A couple of genius little touches in the design here. For example, the corn growing back on your subsequent laps, letting you see a sort of "ghost" of your previous attempts.

It kind of reminds me of the topdown racers you used to get on the GameBoy Advance!

Combine Competition by CuteSquirrel 2023-01-10T20:01:48Z

Good first game!

Handling on the combine is nice, feels weighty and "correct". Core mechanic is really satisfying, shades of Powerwashing Simulator and Farming Simulator.

I've played 2 games now about harvest wheat and avoiding cows, but yours is the only one so far where the cows make a satisfying *splat* noise if you fail to avoid them lol

LD53 — Delivery

Package Panic by Porcus_Pie 2023-05-03T14:29:26Z

Brilliant.

Always a handful of Tetris twists per jam, but never seen one this competent before! The modifications on the basic rules make perfect sense - the new pieces are good additions - and the use of theme is the best I've seen so far this rating period.

Graphics and sound all very good.

All in all, really well done. Complete digital crack as well, had a half dozen games :D

Stork inc. by Ntimi 2023-05-08T18:14:22Z

Really nice entry.

Some slick touches in this one. The fading out of the day, the nicely done difficulty curve, the (IMO) really lovely background art.

A really solid foundation to which you could add more clicker mechanics, like upgrades, automatic play unlocks etc.

Cerberus by Veralos 2023-05-03T12:42:52Z

Good entry, this. Controls are nice and precise, the combat feels nice and chunky. Love the screenshake when you kill a monster, really hammers home the fact your are hitting HARD. The risk-reward ratio of pressing on or going back to the pool to drop of your souls is nice, decently balanced as well.

Really like the fact the numbers go up, because I'm one of the fiends who lives for that shit - wish there were upgrades to buy!

Artifact by Untitled Studios 2023-05-09T18:41:01Z

This is brilliant!

A lot of people have mentioned how good the aesthetic is so outside of saying "great job" I won't go into too much detail there, but the design here is something else!

A lot of times LD puzzle games either escalate far, far too quickly, or fail to escalate at all. You end up at a complete loss 3 levels in, or you see the solution immediately on every level.

This scaled really, really nicely. From totally simplicity to proper brain teasing.

A couple of the levels got an audible "holy shit" out of me when I realised what I had to do 🀣

You have something here - definitely worth expanding on I'd say if you are inclined to do it.

George and Deliverance by MacDoom 2023-05-09T18:28:20Z

I played this on an iPad which actually seemed ideal as I was getting quite good at it by the end of my time with it.

Like you say above, putting your foot (finger?) to the floor on straights and carefully turning is the best plan, but it is possible to be a bit more reckless once you get used to it.

Good level of polish mechanically and visually. For reasons I can't quite articulate it remind me a little of a GBA racing game called Driven I played a lot as a kid πŸ˜‹

The music is great. Good driving beat!

The into to the post-jam version is great. Good laugh from that.

Dante's Delivery Service by Scott Steffes 2023-05-03T11:50:42Z

Well, I didn't expect that, that's for sure!

Really well made entry. Art is great - for both day and night. The NPCs during the day are cute as shit, love that. The gunplay in the night cycle is decent too. More oomph on the shotgun would be nice though!

I love *and* hate when Ludum Dare games have an upgrade loop because I end up getting stuck playing the game for ages trying to get everything :D

Great job, guys!

Verses & Vibes by Madbarron 2023-05-08T18:49:01Z

This is an incredible bit of work, and a *genius* interpretation of the theme.

Visually there is obviously not much to go on - but it's a very nice bit of web design. Very clean.

The poem choices were very good. When I woke up this morning I didn't think I'd be doing a rendition of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, that's for sure!

My pick of the jam - easily, and my only 5 star rating!

I am so deeply sorry for shitting up your game with my frankly embarrassing voice acting 🀣

Popcorn Odyssey by 0X_VOID_X0 2023-05-09T21:08:01Z

Extremely good. Fantastic mix of something like Desert Golfing or Angry Birds and something like Bean's Quest on iOS where the optimal path is obvious, but the execution demands near perfection. Simple mechanics compounding to make something far more complex usually equates to a great jam game, and that is definitely what has happened here.

I think some people may be turned off by the difficulty wall, but IMO the fact it gets constantly harder makes it more engaging. Other people obviously agree given that there are speedrunners in your comments.

Sound was really good. Effects on the character are really cute, definitely softens the blow of the frustration in the later levels πŸ˜‹ Music also high quality, especially the rap at the end!

Graphics are decent, nice tileset, good animations, everything is nice and clear.

Player controller is great. The main aim-and-release mechanic feels spot on, and the subtle influence you have over the popcorn's trajectory adds a whole other layer to it. I'd like to see more levels that require double-jump and `WS` movement perfection!

Great entry - easily a top 50 competitor IMO.

A Bag by Zhiteng Chen 2023-05-08T17:44:07Z

It got a laugh out of me, which basically means it was a complete success! 5/5 for humour.

WitchDelivr by alpacalypse 2023-05-03T11:42:49Z

Controls are good. Just the right amount of intertia when trying to turn around in the air. A neat upgrade would be the ability to dismount in midair so you could fall to street level and walk to deliver a package.

Pixel art is obviously extremely strong here - great stuff. Getting big Kiki's Delivery Service vibes from it.

Reigning Race by cabjhegas 2023-05-05T11:44:50Z

Every jam there is one guy I stumble across that produces a work of mad genius - and this time it's you, congrats!

This is excellent, although very difficult. I think to make this appeal to non-CS nerds you'd need to smooth out the runway a lot. Unless you know a lot about Game of Life it would probably be very hard to even get your guys off the starting green area.

A decent addition would be a "stamp" mechanic, where you can select a common GoL shape and place it down all at once (assumming you can afford it). You could even add some kind of arrow to it, showing you the estimated path of traversal for the shape you selected.

Outside of accessibility issues though, this is absolutely fantastic & unique. Hat's off to you even being able to think of this idea, never mind implementing it so quickly in a highly competent way!

EDIT: I played your last game as well and was really impressed with the creativity of that too.

Hell'o-Cargo by agudar 2023-05-08T18:00:03Z

Great work. Really high degree of polish - which I this is the best measure of a team's skill in a game jam.

Art and animations obviously very high quality. The little touches like the "vibration" of the laser source and the contact splash it makes with the ground really add a lot to the atmosphere.

Player controller is also really well done. Right amount of upward speed and gravity, always felt 100% in control. Could do with some coyote frames though!

Game design also really good. Tight, simple puzzles that give you a good eureka moment when you realise what you have to do.

Great entry. Expect to see this somewhere near the top!

@brineleaves @thristhart On my HDD I have a version of the game where the reaction time on the gun wielding enemies is reduced by 80%. It makes the game *far* more challenging. We wanted to implement difficulty levels, but we ran out of time :(

@0x-void-x0 Thanks for playing, and for appreciating our eccentricity! Can you remember where you were when you fell through the level? Dungeon Delivery by Krynxx 2023-05-09T21:43:57Z

Took a few goes to get my head around the map. The mazes especially were pretty frustrating in the beginning, but once you get your head around the layout its much better.

I really like that there isn't a mini-map. Having to actually engage with the environment is something that is sorely lacking in a lot of games. I found myself giving parts of the maps names to remember them better!

Graphics and sound is amazing here. Can't believe this is a compo entry! Absolutely love the lighting and the ambience. The little guitar flourishes when the delivery drops is great. A lot of really nice little touches here.

The platforming itself is also pretty good. A high degree of precision is possible after a little bit of practice.

Good entry!

News @ Doorstep by Petronus 2023-05-08T18:33:04Z

Like the central mechanic, once you get into a rhythm with it and you learn how to predict the speed and trajectory you can get quite good at it. It is very, very hard though! Took me a good 10 minutes to even get past 100 points, and then another 10 to get past 200 🀣

I think that might just be a me problem though!

Infobahn by CosmogonicFrog 2023-05-03T12:52:33Z

I now work with people who are too young to remember Teletext and it's making me feel so, so old - at the ripe age of 30 🀣

This is a dope entry. My opinion is coloured by the fact I enjoy endless runners anyway, but this one is cool. The graphics are good, the menu is AWESOME, and the music is perfect for the game. Instant trance like state on this one.

The delivery mechanic doesn't really add that much to the experience, it seems like later when the game really speeds up it's better to just ignore deliveries and just pay attention to not crashing.

Despite that, love this one.

Obligatory high score post:

LD54 — Limited Space

AnathemA by 3mpty 2023-10-05T12:02:54Z

Fantastic work. Graphics, sound, and gameplay all come together into something truly unsettling. First jam game that has ever truly made me panic!

The weapons feel really good, and the upgrades are nicely balanced. I felt like a God when I got Speedloader, and then basically immediately died - but it was still awesome.

I payed the OG jam version, and I don't think it's too dark - maybe I just have bright monitors or something.

Great entry.

H.O.R.S.T. - High Operational Robot System Test by DorianSnowball 2023-10-05T11:53:19Z

Really nice central mechanic. I'd wager that no-one else in the jam thought to apply limitation to the player controller itself!

I liked the difficulty and the fact the player is forced to figure stuff out. Not a lot of jam games have the courage to do stuff like that. Level layout themselves were very well done - level 4 in particular was very clever. Took me a good few minutes to realise what the pipes do!

I really like the weightiness of the player controller, but I'd tone down the feeling of momentum, and I'd look into adding coyote frames so that when the player runs off a platform they have a split second in which they can still jump.

As other's have said, the art is great too. Love a single screen platformer!

Great entry, well done!

Holy shit that was fun.

https://i.imgur.com/o2ndik7.png - Best I can do after about 30 mins!

Concept is funny, the execution is great. Movement is smooth - you always feel in control. The rising panic as your tower of tiny people grows and the rocks get more numerous is perfectly balanced.

LD54's best use of Brahms - I absolutely guarantee it!

Waterskin by HexyVexy 2023-10-05T17:54:08Z

@jazzer008 We experimented with a sidebar for a while that an inventory could have sat on be we ultimately felt like it damaged the "ambience" of the experience, so we scrapped it in favour of minimalism. If we had more time I would have liked to replace the reminder screen with a custom version of the inventory with a "confirm" button on it or something, but alas, time.

I really enjoyed this entry, even if it made me feel *really* stupid for about half an hour 🀣

https://i.imgur.com/MKxkBwR.png

The puzzle has a really nice flow to it. Finding the notes, and then realising that you have to extract deeper meaning out of their content is a really neat mechanic. The prose was good as well, except for an awkward opening sentence in note 4.

Most puzzle games in LD are pure logic - sokoban and the like. It's really nice to see a "narrative" puzzle game for once!

I thought the graphics were decent. I'd maybe lean into the darkness a little more. I might have even made the whole game greyscale if I were you, with the occasional splash of red when it needs to be creepy.

I agree with the other commenters about the game needing some sounds. A nice eerie drone and some echoing footsteps would have taken the atmosphere up a notch!

A good effort all around - but an amazing first LD effort!

Lockdown: 1986 by Meru 2023-10-04T20:35:11Z

LD55 — Summoning

Night 333 by MaiMai 2024-04-20T09:37:34Z

The control of the car is great. Feels really tight and satisfying. If I could change things I would add some kind of win state and I'd reduce the HP of the other cars, takes ages to siphon all their health away.

Graphics are great. Really atmospheric entry. Played for way longer than I meant to just locked into the flow of the driving.

LD 55 - The Great "Sum"-moner! by Nwoknu 2024-04-20T09:45:22Z

Nice core mechanic. It's like a much more interesting version of the quick math games my kid gets at school.

It can actually get really stressful when the numbers get really large but the digits available to you are all small.

A really awesome extension to the concept would be the ability to add symbols to the sum, that way you could do multiplication, division, subtraction as well!

Bloodrites by ToC 2024-04-18T15:43:24Z

Really enjoyed this one, love the concept, also reminds me of Age of War. I have spent lots of time playing Flash games a bit like this so was instantly having fun! Was a bit hard to work out what everything meant initially but once it clicked it was smooth sailing.

The First of the End by Flokami 2024-04-18T09:55:02Z

Good basis for expansion.

The spell system is really nice. Mapped to a controller I think it would be way easier to pop off specific spells under pressure, and even easier to remember the recipes needed for them. I like the rock-paper-scissor element to the combat as well, making sure you are using the right attacks against the right enemies.

I think the controls were fine, once you get over the fact you need both hands on the keyboard its perfectly OK!

Just Another Tuesday by Gus Goucher 2024-04-18T09:45:49Z

Really, really enjoyed this one. The visuals are absolutely superb. I love that sort of "80s futurism" style, like a HD Ultima overworld or something like that. Aesthetically the rest was great too. Good sounds, good art.

Game feels nice to play, almost kind of an Isaac-like in a way. I wish the weapons lasted a bit longer!

I wasn't able to beat it even after a few gos, but that's because I am bad at games πŸ˜ƒ

Gerald the Blind Butler by maxflav 2024-04-20T09:14:17Z

This is brilliant. Haven't seen a unique take on these sokoban style puzzles in years! Sound and graphics all great, but the most important thing about these kinds of games is slowly ramping up the difficulty from first principles, which you've also achieved well.

Would like to see some real brain scratcher levels using this concept!

Goku's Wish - Summon the Dragon. An hommage to Akira Toriyama by xazens 2024-04-20T14:09:10Z

Good fun, well executed. I don't know anything about DBZ though so I don't understand the connection to the theme 😭

The music is good and the actual implementation of the Guitar Hero mechanics is really well done. One simple criticism is that you can just mash all 4 keys at the same time and still get the score, but given how hard it gets nearer the end it's probably good this exists or I wouldn't have lasted 60 seconds πŸ˜ƒ

archmage by OldDog 2024-04-17T13:37:10Z

I really liked this one. There is something about games where you can make yourself increasingly large armies that just makes the happy chemicals flow for me.

I played through it twice, first time just to experience it, second time to see how many soldiers I could summon before the frame rate starting tanking!

5zKlwaZ.png

I'd love to see a stats board at the end of the game. How many soldiers I had, how many died, how many enemies I killed etc.

Aesthetic all lovely, no complaints from me. Easy to understand, easy to control etc as well.

I wish the player character didn't move when it comes into contact with friendly units. I would just treet the PC as collisionless with allies.

The Warlock Mafia Owes Me Money! by HexyVexy 2024-04-17T15:53:20Z

We would have liked another day to do big balance passes and do multiple difficulties πŸ˜ƒ There are ways to totally wreck the enemies! Ancestor Rain by ELLISBUG 2024-04-19T18:45:11Z

Came for the cute froggy art, stayed for the strangely beautiful music and odd atmosphere. A really good entry. Art and sound obviously top notch, the notes diagram was implemented really well, and the beats align properly with the song which is usually what ruins LD rhythm games!

Great work.

Squiggle Sorcery by LoongYi 2024-04-17T13:21:53Z

Good to see other teams making card games!

Took me a few minutes to work out how the game determines who wins, but once I did I was able to win. I got to a point where I was able to keep playing cards and swapping them out, but there were no more demons to fight.

The art on the cards is really lovely.

Vampire Summoners by DenisMarasan 2024-04-20T14:03:07Z

Nice entry!

The movement controller felt fine, was able to be pretty nimble in my efforts to avoid the bad guys, and only got caught when I got too cocky and spammed RMB too many times.

I think the abilities are nice conceptually, but I would have reduced the cooldown on the LMB attack to be basically 0 and nerfed it's damage to compensate. The feeling of doing constant DPS in these kinds of games really adds to the juciness.

Cellspace: Cellular Automata Sandbox by loveapplegames 2024-10-14T12:12:21Z

This is awesome, easy 5 stars in innovation.

I've said last week in a blog comment here that I've been trying to gamify cellular automata for ages but can never come up with something that non-programmers would enjoy. I think this possibly falls into that criteria as well, but this is a good basis on which to build something fun.

A "simple" change that would make it more accessible could be rule definition templates you can apply that make various things happen without the player having to truly understand the ruleset.

Cell la vie! by picttarge 2024-10-14T12:02:56Z

Absolutely love this. The graphics are amazing, and the ambient soundscape is lovely. So relaxing. The deep *thwump* when cells pop is :fire:

Really high level of polish on everything here. Menus looks great, game looks great, controls and game design are all really refined.

Great entry.

runner by haztro 2024-10-10T09:04:38Z

The combat is a bit too hard, needs a tuning pass for balance.

The gathering is absolutely fantastic though. Getting a big train of gatherers going and just deforesting an entire area is so god damned satisfying. I think if there were larger clumps of rocks like we sometimes see with the trees the combat would be easier as it would be far simpler to replace large numbers of combat units.

Very unique central mechanic as well, with the train of units following the mouse cursor. Nicely implemented too, you always feel in control.

Love the graphics as well, really striking, effective art!

Tiny Fate - Lost Ruins by sketchbookbug 2024-10-14T11:50:32Z

Good effort. Visual are lovely, nice pixel art. Sound also pretty good. Love seeing voice acting in LD games!

I actually didn't mind the controls at all - they remind me of DOS-era platformers back before every game controlled exactly the same. Perfectly easy to control within the bounds of what the game asks of you!

I thought the gravity ball was a neat mechanic, but as other commenters have said it could feel a little tighter. I can think of lots of ways that mechanic could be extended as well (chaining them, using them as velocity multiplers to break through obstacles, using them as a weapon against enemies etc) so there is definitely scope to flesh out the idea if you want to keep adding to it.

I think this game would work well on a gamepad, you should have a look at that before the next LD as it's actually quite easy to get up and running!

Nice work for a first submission, hope to see more!

Signal Singularities by DrSmey 2026-04-21T17:40:01Z

Torn between 5 stars for a great concept or 1 star for the fucking UWU node πŸ˜‚

Jokes aside, I absolutely love this. There are tons of games this jam that are some variation on "decode a signal" but very few of them, so far, are as interesting as this.

Took me a minute or two to work out what was actually being asked of me - maybe some kind of tutorial that describes what each node does would be good, but then again, maybe not, the discovery is highly compelling - but once it clicked I had a huge shit-eating grin on my face for the rest of my play time.

UI and UX all really good, enjoy the exploding menu panel a lot. Sound all good.

The ability to pan around and have more nodes would be good. I dunno if I'm just shit at the game but later in my play session I ended up juggling lots of nodes - looked like one of those software packages that let's you wire synths together!

Great job. Think this will be my favourite game this jam.

Panic! at the C.I.A. by antbrl 2026-04-30T20:17:39Z

This is jaw dropping stuff. I usually leave long comments on the games I review and do a compliment sandwich with them, but I literally have zero crit of this. It looks great, the audio is unbelievably polished for a jam game (props for hiding the Bee Gees in the US national anthem lol), the central idea is fun and well executed, and it's actually laugh-out-loud funny which is rare.

Probably the best jam game I have ever played.

@aflatthrasher That is such a dumb bug, there is literally a function for resetting everything that I forgot to call 😭

Thanks for playing, and reporting it!

Really cute. Love the pixel art and the little bits of flavour text about the dogs. Really clean UI as well. Core conceit is tightly scoped and competently executed.

A feature that let's you view the output of the chain when you don't have all slots filled would have been nice - although it would make the game significantly easier so maybe not such a good idea.

Really, really good use of the theme - the only 5* for theme I've given out so far!

THE SIGNAL by Mark Swinimer 2026-04-21T20:40:46Z

Excellent stuff. Visuals are about as good as jam games get - abstract enough to be achievable in a short time frame but detailed enough to make an immersive game. Really liked the little touches like the pulsing signal, the red enemies, the snow effect etc.

Audio fantastic as well, definitely worth putting a set of nice headphones on to experience. When the red guys started closing in on me at the end I was genuinely stressed out. The signal ping is a really lovely sound effect.

The roguelike movement wasn't amazing but I think the game would lose something if it had typical action game movement so can't fault it for that.

Really liked the narrative beats, effective use of few words. I love science fiction about the unknowable, and this definitely had this vibe.

Great job here. If this doesn't score high in graphics and sound Ludum Dare is drunk lol

Really like this. Graphics are great and the audio is good. Don't think I've ever played a voice acted game in a jam before!

I am, however, stuck! I have 21 out of 30 logs.

Some hints would be nice πŸ˜€

Glad I got here after the issues were all solved because this is awesome.

Graphically this is excellent. Minimalistic but really well executed.

The audio is great, I absolutely love the keyboard noises.

I am a really fast typer and have played a ton of TELNET MUDs in my time, so playing this was really tactile for me. Jumping around the arena once you get a feel for how far away you are from stuff is really satisfying.

Really good work on the little narrative touches as well. Broke up the gameplay nicely and was all well written.

Great work.
