Few very difficult mechanics are implemented in a stunning union. I got no words to say about how many interesting interconnections it can born further, any new element can create hungreds of decisions.

It can definately find some sucess, but remember: the harder game is, the lesser community it has.

cabjhegas 2023-05-02 10:45

Yes DaniilLenin. You are right. My main concern is how many players will make it through the first step of understanding the basic mechanics and how to make player decision-making easier.

3mpty 2023-05-02 12:45

Really really interesting concept but I just don't think it can work, it's just too hard to predict how things are going to work and formulating a strategy doesn't feel feasible since it's so hard to predict what will happen.

That said, I love the concept and I think theres a possibility for an interesting game here, but not with conways rules. I think starting from the ground up and designing your own set of more easy to understand and reason about rules is the way to go here.

Very impressive to put together the full prototype in the jam, theres a lot going on, so it's super impressive you pulled it off.

cabjhegas 2023-05-02 13:02

Hi @3mpty! Thanks for this. Do you think that if the player can place cities as cells that never die, it would increase the strategy factor and solve part of this unpredictable feeling? A city can be placed if a living cell stays live for 500 years, for example. Or maybe let the player place it for lots of prosperity points.

nobiy 2023-05-02 17:01

Very interesting idea to turn the Conway Game of Life into an actual game. A bit too difficult though and took me many attempts before I figured out a pattern that works.

elysiagriffin 2023-05-02 18:42

Thanks for submitting your game for me to play on my stream! If you’d like to rewatch the playthrough, you can find it here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1809503221?t=4h10m27s Good luck on your ratings, see you next LD! :D 💜 Elysia Griffin AKA Button Feedback Lady https://www.twitch.tv/elysiagriffin

It looks really cool and I want to review it, but I can't figure out how to place my people down

raffe 2023-05-03 05:16

Hey! I'm not sure if im just completely dumb, but could you tell me the controls or how to play? Right now the only thing I can figure out how to do is press the end turn button :joy:

cabjhegas 2023-05-03 10:41

Thanks @nobiy and @elysiagriffin

Hi @nuin and @raffe , I left the tutorial for the last minute and it is terrible. You need to place the humans on the green area on the left bottom side. Try to use the patterns showed on the tutorial. Specifically, try to shoot a spaceship to the right and then shot à spaceship or glider to get into the fauna.

aloya 2023-05-03 15:25

it looks like interesting mechanics. I think it can be good project but there are many things to do:)

beebster-games 2023-05-03 15:29

So, I am not much of a simulator player, but I gave it a try. In a Jam it is usually better to try something quick and flashy. I might come back to this later and spend more time with the game. As for now, as a Jam submission it was a bit to cerebral for me.

qin-bugong 2023-05-03 15:33

Can you tell me how to select other reces? When human won appears I can just select restart and can not click other options, I'm not sure if I know how to play XD

floralvikings 2023-05-03 15:35

I really enjoyed it! The tutorial is definitely my main gripe, I feel like a few demonstrations of various techniques could go a long way to making it easier to get started.

cabjhegas 2023-05-03 16:38

Thanks guys!

@qin-bugong I couldn't finish them on time for submission. I'm working on them right now.

furtive-pygmy 2023-05-03 21:10

I really enjoyed this, awesome that you introduced Conway's game of life into it. I think having a button that shows different patterns might be a good idea to make it easier to understand. I think it could be extended by making still life's a city that maybe spawns a random pattern every turn or something. I wasn't entirely sure how to unlock orcs or elves though. Great entry, I enjoyed it a lot!

cabjhegas 2023-05-03 22:18

Hi @furtive-pygmy! Thanks a lot for the feedbacks! I’m really glad you liked. The game seems to please only a small niche. It’s seems that it is not for everyone. I’m happy you bring the idea of cities! I was in doubt if it wold be a good way to give more control and strategy factor to the player. I was thinking about it as a B3/S123456789 cell. It can bring others possibilities, like the possibility of placing “guns” that shoots gliders (simpler than those from B3/S23 rules). Do you think cities should be something the player places for a huge amount of prosperity points or a live cell becomes a city if it stays live for 1000 years, for example? I didn’t implemented the elves and orcs level yet 😔. I couldn’t finish them in time for jam. Thanks

furtive-pygmy 2023-05-03 23:21

@cabjhegas yeah, I think it's a very CS/Maths nerd thing, so won't be everyone's cup of tea. I think you should have the live cell become a city, but I'm a fan of sim-like games, maybe placing them and guns that shoot gliders would make it a lot more interactive for players though. Re: orcs and elves, ahh that explains it. Still good fun anyway :)

cabjhegas 2023-05-04 00:48

@furtive-pygmy @floralvikings @qin-bugong You guys seems to be target audience for this game. I just decided I ll experiment develop this game longer. If it is possible (and if you guys are interested), it would be awesome for me if you guys keep an eye on the next updates on the following weeks on itch io. It would be great to have your feedbacks and suggestions on the forum there. Thanks a lot.

furtive-pygmy 2023-05-04 20:39

@cabjhegas I'm super interested to check out a post-jam version for sure!

teddyreid 2023-05-05 11:44

Every jam there is one guy I stumble across that produces a work of mad genius - and this time it's you, congrats!

This is excellent, although very difficult. I think to make this appeal to non-CS nerds you'd need to smooth out the runway a lot. Unless you know a lot about Game of Life it would probably be very hard to even get your guys off the starting green area.

A decent addition would be a "stamp" mechanic, where you can select a common GoL shape and place it down all at once (assumming you can afford it). You could even add some kind of arrow to it, showing you the estimated path of traversal for the shape you selected.

Outside of accessibility issues though, this is absolutely fantastic & unique. Hat's off to you even being able to think of this idea, never mind implementing it so quickly in a highly competent way!

EDIT: I played your last game as well and was really impressed with the creativity of that too.

cabjhegas 2023-05-05 12:37

It's so amazing to read feedback like this! Thank you very much @teddyreid!

I am now implementing exactly those shapes that you suggested :) I'll keep developing it until I see if I can come up with a way to greatly improve its accessibility. If I succeed, I may develop a complete comercial game on top of it. If you can, follow the development of the game on itchio. It would be really cool to receive feedback from people who took the project from the beginning and will be able to give their opinion on the evolution of the game :)

digital-bacon 2023-05-05 12:41

A difficult game, but a very interesting take on the theme. I found the graphics to be a bit cluttered, but that's the nature of GoL. Definitely a great idea, and I'll be interested to see where you take it. Well done.

cabjhegas 2023-05-05 12:45

Thanks @digital-bacon ! Please, keep an eye on itchio. I ll definitely need lots of feedback to make it work!

potkirland 2023-05-06 17:35

HumanWin.jpg

elves did not unlock for some reason :sob: other than that it was an intriguing experience. Thanks for sharing your game with us.

massena 2023-05-06 22:05

Interesting game! I suggest you to use colors with better contrast, as a colorblind I wasn't able to see the difference between green and red. I'm waiting for the elves/orcs gameplay!

cabjhegas 2023-05-07 00:25

Thanks for the feedbacks @potkirland and @massena ! Sorry. I didn’t finish orc and elves yet. But I ll make an update soon with them! @massena thanks for let me knowing about this. I ll study about color blind friendly colors as soon as possible. I ll let you know when I have a version considering this.

yuriscat 2023-05-07 05:18

I really love the John Conway’s Game of Life and any variations of it. I'm glad to see such a great game in this competition. Maybe you could consider adding more factions in the future, but for now, you've done a great job. It's a fantastic game.

thomas-karcher 2023-05-07 10:02

Definitely an interesting idea, but it was hard for me to find any "strategy" other than: "Let's put this glider here and see what happens." And most of the time, it just hit something and stopped while the orcs conquered the map. :-/ I agree with what @teddyreid said above: A collection of pre-defined "stamps" with some indication of their total cost and function would surely help laymans like me plan my moves!

euler-moises 2023-05-10 14:05

unfortunately I'm dumb enough to understand your game. A friend played it and said it's good. I gave my rating for his opinion. All I can say is "too bad there's no audio".

congratulations on the job.

dgspitzer 2023-05-11 20:16

Human won! Very innovative and interesting concept!!

twowolf 2023-05-12 09:02

humans did it again.png

I have no idea how but I did it... I mean I did try to place them according to the hints so the tutorial did help. I'd love to say it was fun except... I had no idea how I did it. But I liked seeing them grow and do their thing.

Conway's Game of Life huh. Interesting. Is there an actual winning strategy to these things actually calculating bst? For me it was just... this pattern is a rook, that pattern is a bishop, and that pattern is queen... and all gut feeling lol.

mpk90 2023-05-12 16:05

I love your idea and really cool to see a "strategy game". Also the idea with the different races and ways of playing is very cool. For me it was a bit too complex for a LD game.
